McNally Smith College of Music Closing, Students Need Boxes, Food Etc.

submitted by brauer@augsburg.edu

Our cafe has been shut down and we have students living in the dorms who rely on meal plans to eat. If you are looking for a way to help please consider bringing in some food to sustain them so they don’t have to worry about how they are eating today. There are students who are stranded here with no way of supporting or feeding themselves.

We have approximately 117 students living in the dorms at the Lowry building. They are also in need of boxes because they are being asked to move out.

They could really use some community support.

If you or someone you know has boxes, bins, or food to donate to students, please drop them off at the Residence Hall at 345 Wabasha St. N. Saint Paul, MN 55102 (Sign on the building says Gray Duck)

Call our RA duty phone at 651-324-1609 when you arrive and we’ll meet you in the lobby with a cart to grab any boxes you may have!

You can apparently also have food delivered to the commons in the secure area of McNally. Looks like people have been donating pizzas and whatnot.

Submit your creative work for the Engman Prize

submitted by starckl@augsburg.edu

The John Engman Writing Prize, a literary competition sponsored by Murphy Square and the Augsburg English Department, is awarded each year to promising writers. This year’s submission deadline has been extended to December 31st. Judges of the competition will select winners in each of the categories of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction.

To enter writers must submit the following:

Short Fiction – One complete short story of not more than 15 pages.
Creative Non-fiction – One complete piece not longer than 15 pages.
Poetry – At least three poems.

All writers must be enrolled at Augsburg University and may enter each of the categories as often as they wish, but they may only win in one. Names of writers must not be on the works submitted.

Entries must be submitted through Moodle.

The direct link to the site is: https://moodle.augsburg.edu/moodlecommunity/course/view.php?id=795

The prize was named in honor of poet and Augsburg alumnus John Engman who died in 1996. Judges for the contest are English Department faculty members. The judges reserve the right to withhold awards if entries in specific categories are not of winning quality; they may also increase the number of awards in a category that has attracted entries of obvious merit. Winners will be notified in January and will be awarded gift cards to the university bookstore.

Study abroad in Thaland/Laos: Diversity and Inequality in Global Professional Practice

submitted by koh@augsburg.edu

Diversity and Inequality in Global Professional Practice
April 30 – May 13, 2018

Program Description: This program explores diversity and social inequality as a prerequisite to professional social work practice in a global context – specifically, in the context of Southeast Asia and Hmong culture. A critical dimension of professional practice is competence in work with diverse populations. Learning in this course is meant to complement learning in other social work supporting and foundation courses.

A large part of student learning in this course occurs through self-exploration, since knowledge of self is critical to professional social work practice. In pre travel meetings, students use readings, experiential exercises, dialogue, and assignments to deepen awareness of themselves as members of social groups. Students also learn about others’ social identities through course assignments, exercises and dialogue – completed both prior to and following travel to Thailand and Laos. Finally, the course provides an opportunity to improve communication with others through regular dialogue practice.

The deadline to apply is January 31, 2018 (please link below). For additional information, please email Professor Bibiana Koh (koh@augsburg.edu).

Speaking of Pilgrimage… with Phil Adamo

submitted by kilgorem@augsburg.edu

Speaking of Pilgrimage: Echoes of the 1230 Pilgrimage from Val-des-Choux to Pluscarden Abbey, with Phil Adamo
Wednesday, November 1
12:00-1:00pm, Marshall Room

In the year 1230AD, King Alexander II of Scotland founded Pluscarden Abbey, a monastery in northern Scotland. The monks who formed the original community, known as Caulites, came from the priory of Val-des-Choux in Burgundy, France.

History professor Phil Adamo designed and participated in a pilgrimage that echoed the journey of those early Caulite monks. Over the summer months of 2017, he and his fellow pilgrims walked roughly 1400 miles across France and the United Kingdom, from Val-des-Choux to Pluscarden, an experience that was both physically challenging and spiritually enriching. Come hear about Phil’s journey in a special presentation to the Augsburg community, November 1, from noon to 1pm.

Sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Christensen Center for Vocation.

Farewell to Carrie Shidla – October 30th

submitted by comerc@augsburg.edu

It is with mixed emotions that I announce Carrie Shidla’s resignation from Augsburg effective October 31st. She will be joining Normandale Community College as their Associate Director of Advising and Career Services.

We will be honoring Carrie on Monday, October 30th from 2:30 – 4 pm in the Christensen Center Art Gallery. Short remarks will be made at 3:00 pm and all are welcome to attend.

In her 14+ years of service, Carrie has developed strong and lasting relationships across campus with faculty, staff, and students. In Academic Advising, Carrie restructured first-year advising and registration several times, adjusting for changing software–and most importantly–student need. She developed a reputation as a strategic problem-solver.

In August of 2016, Carrie joined a newly designed graduation and transfer team in the Registrar’s Office. She quickly embraced her new role and has brought a deeply student-centered perspective to the work. Her ability to navigate complex curricular nuance has led to the implementation of several process and policy changes that have and will continue to impact the recruitment, matriculation, and graduation of students.

We will all miss Carrie’s passion, expertise, positive attitude, and partnership. Please join us in celebrating Carrie and wishing her great success in her vocational journey.

Critical Thinking Workshop – Thurs, Nov 2

submitted by kilgorem@augsburg.edu

We all say we teach critical thinking, but when was the last time we thought deeply about how to do it effectively? Critical thinking is an institutional student learning outcome. This year, it’s being assessed once again. In year’s past, our students have not performed as well as we would like. In this workshop faculty will be introduced to Bloom and Costa’s models of critical thinking. Faculty are asked to bring an assignment, quiz, exam, or activity that they are currently using and then we will work on integrating the prompts and levels of critical thinking into these assignments or exams.
