Fellowship Friday is a Time to Connect

submitted by maherk@augsburg.edu

Take time to chat with colleagues about your week… what’s working and what’s not working… or just connect.

Fridays | “Fellowship Fridays” | 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm, ZOOM

CTL is joining Bridget Robinson-Riegler, Psychology Professor and member of Faculty Senate, to bring you Fellowship Fridays support sessions. All faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world. – we’ll trade ideas, advice, highs, lows, successes, and failures – or maybe we’ll just plain old vent. Most importantly, we will attempt to inoculate ourselves against one of the more insidious side effects of this pandemic – isolation. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, or pour a glass of wine, and Zoom in to support your fellow instructors and work through this challenging time together.

Quad Reserved TODAY for an Afternoon Campaign Event

submitted by alamilla@augsburg.edu

The Biden-Harris campaign is renting space from Augsburg today for a Get Out the Vote event for college students featuring Jill Biden. This is an invitation-only event (invitations were determined by the campaign team), and all those attending will adhere to Augsburg’s symptom screening, physical distancing, and face covering requirements.

The campaign team will be setting up in the quad beginning early this morning. Security will be provided by the Secret Service, who have engaged the Minneapolis Police Department for support.

The campaign will be putting up barriers around the portion of the quad that will be used for the event; Auggies crossing the quad will need to stay on the perimeter. The doors on the quad to Sverdrup Hall, Science Hall, and Christensen Center will remain available for fob access. Memorial Hall will not be open for the day. Those with offices in Memorial have already been notified by email.

The event will begin at 12:45 p.m. If you’re not on the invitation list and are able to do so, please avoid the quad area during this time.

Moodle Gradebook Reminders and Support

submitted by maherk@augsburg.edu

As we approach mid-semester, remember that in order for course totals to calculate correctly, it is very important to enter 0’s for work students have not completed. Moodle only aggregates “non-empty” grades. This means a blank in the gradebook will be ignored in the calculations–giving students an overly optimistic sense of their total. See the link below for instructions on how to quickly enter 0’s for graded items. If you would like help with your Moodle gradebook, the E-Learning team is ready to assist you. Please contact your LFC or Bonnie Tensen for help with this.

Somali Translator Needed for Food Distribution Site

submitted by crombie@augsburg.edu

The People’s Library Mutual Aid food and supply distribution site is looking for a Somali translator to assist with visitors on-site. Duties would include providing assistance with taking food/supply orders, explaining the items available, answering questions, and minor conflict resolution.

Currently the distribution site is located on the Minneapolis College of Art and Design campus in Minneapolis and distribution days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, the location will be changing the beginning of August (but will remain in the Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis).

While there is the possibility of a small stipend for their work, most of it would be on a volunteer basis (and as much time as the person is able to commit).

If you are interested in this volunteer position, please contact Lara Crombie at crombie@augsburg.edu

Yesterday, ICE decided to rescind the rules put forward on July 6, 2020, and will abandoned the restrictions on international students holding F-1 visas. This is great news for our international community, not only on campus but for students attending universities all over the United States.

President Paul Pribbenow had signed an amicus brief with the President’s Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration supporting a lawsuit challenging the restrictions, and one of our international students, Jonas Bergmann Poulsen, was interviewed by MSNBC last week (follow link below) on the impact the guidelines would have on him personally and on the international community at large.

The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) team continues to work with our international students to create successful plans for the fall semester. The blend of course formats Augsburg plans to offer, will advance students toward degrees completions—for those currently in the country AND for those who struggle to return to campus due to border restrictions.

We thank the Augsburg community for all for the support given in the last 9 days!

Star Tribune and MN Urban Debate League Sponsor Criminal Justice Reform Essay, Video, and Audio Contest

submitted by chavezm@augsburg.edu

The killing of George Floyd and the unrest that followed have created a long-delayed but urgently needed discussion on police brutality, inequities in the criminal justice system and racial injustice more broadly.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League and Star Tribune Opinion believe in the power of young minds and voices. We want the best ideas of students between the ages of 10 and 18 about how our communities can continue the hard work of responding to these crucial challenges. The task is to create an original written essay, video or audio file which describes one or two specific changes our community, state or nation should make to reduce racial inequities and injustices in the criminal justice system.Top submissions as determined by a group of judges from the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota will be published in the Star Tribune and shared with leaders across our state and nation

The submission should be entirely created by students, although others may teach new skills, such as operating a camera, microphone or computer software. Submissions must come from young people between the ages of 10 and 18, using their age as of Dec. 31, 2020. You may also submit a group project with up to six friends (seven people total).
Written essays must be no more than 700 words, typed, double-spaced and in 12-point font. Video and audio submissions should be no longer than two minutes and must be submitted in a file format that can be uploaded to YouTube. Any materials from other people (research, writing, video or audio clips, etc.) must be given credit either in the submission or in an additional text document not more than 50 words long.

How Students Can Enter:

Questions can be sent to essaysubmissions@startribune.com. To enter, students should fill out the form below and submit your essay, video or audio file by Aug. 16. This is their chance to be passionate, be creative, and use their own personal experiences as evidence to argue for change in our community.

“Fellowship Fridays” Support Sessions Begin Next Week

submitted by maherk@augsburg.edu

CTL is joining Bridget Robinson-Riegler, Psychology Professor and member of Faculty Senate, to bring you Fellowship Fridays support sessions. Beginning Friday, June 19, all faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world.

*If Friday afternoons don’t work with your schedule, but you would still like to participate, reach out to Bridget or Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright, and they will contemplate adding other days/times in the future.

If you have an event scheduled prior to April 18 and haven’t heard from your planner please reach out to them. If you are hosting an event know you can independently cancel your event. If you decide to cancel your event please notify your planner as soon as possible so they can assist with navigating the cancellation.

There are three alternatives we are discussing with event hosts:

1. Live Stream / Video Conference (or other alternate modality) – Some events can be conducted online, via conference call, or in other ways that do not require face-to-face interaction.

2. Postpone – For events that will be postponed, we are asking event hosts to hold off on rescheduling for specific future dates at this time. Augsburg will be monitoring the situation and University Events will be in touch with updates about rescheduling.

3. Cancel – Many events won’t be able to be rescheduled for a number of reasons.

We know that many of these cancellations, postponements, and adjustments are and will be disappointing for our campus community, the event hosts, other participants, and our valued community partners. We share in that sorrow, but also know that all of us are doing what we must to promote good health and protect the most vulnerable within our community and among our neighbors.

Please reach out to your assigned event planner or me with questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Sarah Cash-Darvell

Support for Coping with COVID-19

submitted by oliverc@augsburg.edu

The Center for Wellness & Counseling is working on transitioning our services to remote formats in order to continue supporting the Augsburg student body during these challenging times. Please look for communication from CWC if you have an upcoming appointment scheduled. Additional information will be available shortly for the rest of the campus community.

In the interim, our phone counseling services will be available 24 hours a day between now and next Wednesday morning, 3/25/20, to support students with anything you are struggling with- from urgent matters to just needing “someone to talk to.” This can be accessed by contacting our main number- 612-330-1707, and selecting option 1. This will allow you to connect directly with a licensed mental health counselor anytime our center is closed.

More information on health care (particularly if you are uninsured) and emotional coping can be found on our webpage, Coping with the Coronavirus (please see link below).

Your safety and well being is our highest priority. More information regarding support options will be available soon.

With deep care,
The CWC Staff

Temporary Change to Escort Policy

submitted by erchula@augsburg.edu

In an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the campus community Public Safety will be suspending all vehicle escorts until further notice. Public Safety staff will still be providing walking escorts on campus, as well as to Fairview-Riverside Hospital and the People’s Center Riverside facilities.

If you are feeling ill and are not able to walk with Public Safety staff to Fairview or the People’s Center, you should still contact Public Safety at 612-330-1717 and we will have emergency medical services (ambulance service) assist in transporting you to the proper healthcare facility.

We will reassess this temporary policy change on 3/30/2020. Any questions about this temporary policy change should be directed to publicsafety@augsburg.edu.

Eligible students will be in their 1st or 2nd year with at least 2 years left in undergrad here at Augsburg, and interested in leadership development and social change work. The application will remain open through the week of April 6th.
