Riverside Ave Traffic Impacts Due to Steam Line Work

Starting this week, our steam provider, Cordia, will replace the steam line below Riverside Ave. The project is expected to take 2–4 weeks with lane closures starting on the south side of Riverside. We do not expect any impacts to heating or hot water on campus, but traffic and sidewalk access along Riverside will be affected by the construction during this period.

Updated Guidance for COVID-19 and Other Respiratory Viruses

On March 1, 2024, the CDC released updated respiratory virus guidance in response to the decreasing risk that COVID-19 poses to the population. This updated guidance includes strategies to protect people at highest risk of getting seriously ill and applies to COVID-19 as well as other common viral respiratory illnesses like flu and RSV.

Students, faculty, and staff no longer need to complete the Augsburg self-reporting form following a positive COVID-19 test or exposure. Please follow CDC recommendations to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses when you’re sick.

STAY HOME WHEN YOU’RE SICK
Stay home and away from others (including people you live with who are not sick) if you have respiratory virus symptoms that aren’t better explained by another cause, including fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny nose, and headache, among others.

WHEN SYMPTOMS IMPROVE
You can go back to your normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, BOTH are true: your symptoms are getting better overall AND You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication).

TAKE PRECAUTIONS
When you go back to your normal activities, keep in mind that you may still be able to spread the virus that made you sick, even if you are feeling better. Take added precautions for the next 5 days, such as wearing a high-quality, well-fitting mask and/or testing when you will be around other people indoors.

Interested in Research and Graduate School? Apply to the TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2024 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2025 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2025. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. The priority deadline to apply is March 28; however, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2025.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? Online Survey – Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

Paid Sim Patient Opportunity (4/9)

The Augsburg PA program is seeking people who can become pregnant who are interested in being a genitourinary (GU) simulated patient/model for our Physician Assistant students. The model/patient will provide students with the opportunity to examine reproductive anatomy and learn to perform a thorough and patient-centered pelvic and speculum exam.

GU simulated patients need to have an intact uterus, cervix, and ovaries (no history of hysterectomy). Reimbursement is $65 per pelvic exam, with an average of 6-7 exams per session. The lab day will be 4/9/24 from 1-4.

Because this is a hands-on and sensitive topic, patients must be comfortable with a full pelvic and speculum exam. Prior exam experience is preferred. Any questions or concerns can be directed to paprog@augsburg.edu.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for Spanish-speaking adults to judge our Spanish Debate League. This program helps middle and high school students build confidence, grow their academic skills, improve their fluency, and connect with other Spanish speakers in the Twin Cities.

*NO DEBATE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, BUT YOU MUST BE FLUENT IN SPANISH!*

You will earn $55 for each tournament you judge. We will provide transportation if necessary.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is offering 17+ camps for middle and high school students in 2024. Join us for fun, engaging, and competitive learning for middle and high school students.

Whether your student is new to the activity or has experience, we have a camp for you, taught by experienced and caring Minnesota educators!

Our 5 weeks of day camps for middle and high school students are hosted at Augsburg University in Minneapolis and include:

Augsburg University recently announced an agreement to sell the property to the SomalI Museum of Minnesota to develop a permanent museum facility and cultural center on the former Bethany Lutheran Church site at 2511 E. Franklin Avenue.

Augsburg has worked with Redesign to identify a financially sustainable, community-serving use for the property that contributes to the vitality of the East Franklin corridor. During the 2023 legislative session, the Somali Museum was approved for state funding to advance the project.

Neighbors and community members are invited to attend a community gathering about the past, present, and future of 2511 East Franklin Avenue on Saturday, April 27, from 12:30 PM – 3:30 PM at Matthews Recreation Center (2318 29th Ave. S). Please join us to learn about the Somali Museum and their vision for the site. Participants will be invited to share stories about the site’s history and place in Seward.

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

Rally & March to End Evictions – TODAY at 5 p.m.

Join Camp Nenookaasi and the East Phillips Neighborhood at the Government Plaza THIS WEDNESDAY, March 13th at 5 pm. Evicting unhoused encampments is inhumane, expensive, and NOT a solution to homelessness.

Camp Nenookaasi is marching on City Hall before its court case on 3/14. Come hear from past and current residents as well as organizers from across various movements to speak out against the city’s cruel, colonial non-solution of encampment eviction.

You can take the Blue or Green Line directly to the Government Plaza Light Rail Station. The rally takes place on the plaza and the march will leave from that location.

New Staff Position: Academic Advisor, TRIO/Student Support Services

Summary of Position

Provide comprehensive advising, financial literacy and academic support services to Augsburg University students who participate in the TRIO/SSS program; assist TRIO/SSS participants in their persistence, academic performance, and timely graduation from the University; enhance existing and develop new programming designed to improve the academic counseling experience for participants in TRIO/SSS; collaborate with on-and off-campus departments to provide complementary student services.

Primary Responsibilities

– Academic Advising and course selection: Advise and monitor students regarding course selection and planning, major and graduation requirements, 4-year planning, graduation advising.
– Financial Aid Counseling and financial literacy advising: Advise students regarding financial aid award and renewal, and about federal, state, institutional, and other sources of financial aid. Instruct on personal budget planning, student account management and other financial literacy topics, monitor and advise on scholarship applications and completion of requirements.
– Academic Counseling: Coach students in academic skills and time management techniques through weekly meetings during students’ first term in SSS; monitor academic progress, respond to academic feedback reports and alerts from instructors; provide specialized probation advising and specialized advising for program participants admitted to the University conditionally; assist students in setting and achieving academic goals.
– Personal and Career Counseling: Instruct students in life and career skills, assist with major decision making strategies, intervene in minor crises and screen for appropriate referrals, counsel on variety of issues including family issues, college transition adjustment, college completion, personal development. Guide students to appropriate self-advocacy personally and academically.
– Advocacy: Advocate on behalf of students with faculty and staff, coach students to self-advocate.
– Summer Bridge: Design and lead supplemental instruction sessions for Summer Bridge course July-August. Assist in planning and day-to-day operations of 5-week academic residential program. Design and lead several program activities. Direct service to and implementation of advising programming for students participating in voluntary academic support program in order to meet eligibility and administrative requirements of the federal grant.

Additional Responsibilities

– Specialized workshops and cultural activities: Design, present, and evaluate 6-8 student academic support workshops per year, often in collaboration with on- and off-campus community partners; plan and accompany student participants on cultural, academic, and leadership activity events 2-4 times per year.
– Project planning and maintenance: Maintain program website, social networking sites and/or program newsletter to support necessary advertisement and communication of program activities. Plan, prepare, and implement retention initiatives to meet TRIO/SSS mission and objectives. Maintain partnerships with workshop co-sponsors, create new programming as needed
– Collaborative and ongoing training activities: Participate in at least one college committee, cross-departmental training, or discussion group per academic year; consult, collaborate and advise on programming and student issues with campus departments (faculty, Student Financial Services, Admissions, Disability Services, Counseling, Career Services, Multicultural Student Services, etc.)
– Professional development activities, program assessment, case notes on database and in student files, other documentation for federal grant support.
– All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

– Typical work environment is an office.
– Sedentary work for long periods of time.
– Regular computer and phone use.
– Regular communication with others. Infrequent driving in the metro area for cultural activities, training, workshops, and special projects; must have reliable transportation.
– Occasional travel outside of metro area for professional development.
– Occasional long or irregular hours related to weekend and evening hours to accommodate Summer Bridge students, Adult Undergraduate students, to present workshops, and to participate in cultural activities and professional development activities.
– Intense work environment: student issues can reach crisis and feel overwhelming; it is important that the advisor maintains perspective and professional boundaries.

Paid Sim Patient Opportunity (4/9)

The Augsburg PA program is seeking people who can become pregnant who are interested in being a genitourinary (GU) simulated patient/model for our Physician Assistant students. The model/patient will provide students with the opportunity to examine reproductive anatomy and learn to perform a thorough and patient-centered pelvic and speculum exam.

GU simulated patients need to have an intact uterus, cervix, and ovaries (no history of hysterectomy). Reimbursement is $65 per pelvic exam, with an average of 6-7 exams per session. The lab day will be 4/9/24 from 1-4.

Because this is a hands-on and sensitive topic, patients must be comfortable with a full pelvic and speculum exam. Prior exam experience is preferred. Any questions or concerns can be directed to paprog@augsburg.edu.

Online Survey – Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

This program helps middle and high school students build confidence, grow their academic skills, improve their fluency, and connect with other Spanish speakers in the Twin Cities.

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2024 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2025 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2025. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. The priority deadline to apply is March 28; however, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2025.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

The next First Thursday is today, March 7, noon—3pm. The greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

We are looking for adults aged 55+ to participate in research on social interactions with others by engaging in a structured conversation with another person virtually using Zoom. The experiment takes about an hour, and as a benefit for participating you will receive a $5 Target gift card, or we will make a $5 donation in your name to Open Arms of MN which provides meals to terminally ill and homebound Minnesotans. Plus there will be one randomly selected grand prize winner on June 1st who will also receive a $100 Target Gift Card!

The basic technology skills required are:

* Participants must have access to a computer as this study can only be performed using a computer (desktop or laptop). We don’t recommend using a phone.
* Your computer must have camera and microphone abilities.
* Individuals need to be able to fill out an online survey. You will be asked to complete short online surveys before and after the online Zoom conversation session.
* Participants need the ability to use email, have reliable internet access, and be able to download and access the Zoom application on their computer. If needed, we can help you get connected with Zoom in advance of your participation.

Fluent in Spanish? Be a Debate Judge for the Spanish Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for Spanish-speaking adults to judge our Spanish Debate League. This program helps middle and high school students build confidence, grow their academic skills, improve their fluency, and connect with other Spanish speakers in the Twin Cities.

*NO DEBATE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, BUT YOU MUST BE FLUENT IN SPANISH!*

You will earn $55 for each tournament you judge. We will provide transportation if necessary.
