Want to learn more about off-campus research opportunities in STEM? The National Science Foundation supports programs called Research Experiences for Undergraduates or REUs.

On Friday, November 12, from 4:00 – 5:30 PM, Dixie Shafer of URGO will lead a workshop on how to search for and apply to paid off-campus Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs in STEM fields.

This will be a virtual event designed to help students learn more about how to search for and apply to summer research opportunities nationally as well as locally.

Biomedical Engineering Summer Research Program

The Biomedical Engineering Department and Center for Biomedical Informatics at Wake Forest School of Medicine will offer several summer research opportunities in 2022 focusing on Imaging and Mechanics-based Projects on Accidental Cases of Trauma (IMPACT) and other biomedical engineering and informatics topics. Students selected for this Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program will receive a stipend and on-campus housing. Exciting biomedical engineering projects are offered on topics including:

Injury prediction model development
Military, sports and spaceflight safety
Osteoporosis prevention
Biomechanical characterization of injury mechanisms
Diagnostics and therapies for cancer patients

HBP at Garden Party Books in Rochester on Friday

On Friday, November 12, from 6:30–8:30 p.m., poet Jean Prokott will be at the new Garden Party Books (602 7th St NW, Rochester, MN) for a poetry reading and book signing. Jean was awarded the 2021 Howling Bird Press Poetry Prize for The Second Longest Day of the Year from among more than two hundred submissions received from across the country. Prokott will be joined by local poets and writers, Sue McMillan (Rochester poet laureate), Lisa Higgs, Pamela Sinicrope, and Melissa Brandt, who will read a few poems to open the evening. Light food and refreshments will be provided.

The Second Longest Day of the Year tackles a variety of subjects, such as mental health, the pandemic, women’s rights, the environment, and more, with notes of both seriousness and humor.

According to Sierra DeMulder, author of Today Means Amen, “The Second Longest Day of the Year offers us a poetic landscape that is easily entered but not lightly forgotten. Jean Prokott’s writing is agile. It moves gracefully from a stark wittiness and conversational observations to unforgettable imagery evoking the true palpability of grief. You’ll find yourself pausing between pages to reflect and revel; to mourn or query; to grow and keep going.”

The Second Longest Day of the Year will be available for purchase at Garden Party Books. Negative Covid test or proof of vaccination are required to attend.

Jean Prokott has work published or forthcoming in Arts & Letters, Angel City Review, Anomaly, and Adirondack Review, among other journals; she is a recipient of an AWP Intro Journals Award, a recipient of the Joan Ramseyer Poetry Award.

Interfaith Ally Workshop on November 11

The Interfaith Ally Workshop provides participants with the opportunity to learn about a wide range of faiths and ethical traditions including Native Spirituality, Judaism, Islam, Hybrid, Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism and Atheism. Participants will hear the stories of community members from a variety of traditions and have the opportunity to learn through case studies. This workshop qualifies as an equity/inclusion event to help maintain good standing in the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program. The Interfaith Ally Workshop is a program of Interfaith at Augsburg and Campus Ministry.

The Aquatic Science, Engineering, and Technology (ASET) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program (ASET-REU) is a 10-week program and immersive research experience exposing eight undergraduates per year to authentic aquatic research.

The ASET-REU program focuses on the Great Lakes and Hudson River basin research and includes an integrative learning community through research, seminars, professional development, and social activities. The program leverages existing research and educational programs in the Schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering and the Institute for a Sustainable Environment.

Scholars will develop a diverse background and interdisciplinary network, foster an understanding of research, create strong relationships with mentors and peers, and acquire experiences in all aspects of “doing research”, motivating them toward and positioning them for a STEM career.

Want to learn more about off-campus research opportunities in STEM? The National Science Foundation supports programs called Research Experiences for Undergraduates or REUs.

On Friday, November 12, from 4:00 – 5:30 PM, Dixie Shafer of URGO will lead a workshop on how to search for and apply to paid off-campus Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs in STEM fields.

This will be a virtual event designed to help students learn more about how to search for and apply to summer research opportunities nationally as well as locally.

The Aquatic Science, Engineering, and Technology (ASET) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program (ASET-REU) is a 10-week program and immersive research experience exposing eight undergraduates per year to authentic aquatic research.

The ASET-REU program focuses on the Great Lakes and Hudson River basin research and includes an integrative learning community through research, seminars, professional development, and social activities. The program leverages existing research and educational programs in the Schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering and the Institute for a Sustainable Environment.

Scholars will develop a diverse background and interdisciplinary network, foster an understanding of research, create strong relationships with mentors and peers, and acquire experiences in all aspects of “doing research”, motivating them toward and positioning them for a STEM career.

Interfaith Ally Workshop on November 11

The Interfaith Ally Workshop provides participants with the opportunity to learn about a wide range of faiths and ethical traditions including Native Spirituality, Judaism, Islam, Hybrid, Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism and Atheism. Participants will hear the stories of community members from a variety of traditions and have the opportunity to learn through case studies. This workshop qualifies as an equity/inclusion event to help maintain good standing in the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program. The Interfaith Ally Workshop is a program of Interfaith at Augsburg and Campus Ministry.

During the June 9, 2020 University Town Hall, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. At this service we praise God for the saints who’ve gone before us, especially honoring ones who have been personally significant in our faith. Nov 10: Annual Thor Heyerdahl Conference 2021: Migration and Identity

You are invited to attend the Thor Heyerdahl International Day 2021 conference to be held virtually on Wednesday, November 10th from 9:00-15:30 CET.

The conference is a collaboration between the Thor Heyerdahl Institute, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Oslo, our Augsburg University (USA), and Vestfold & Telemark County Council. The conference will focus on the global subject of “Migration and Identity.”

President Paul Pribbenow will hold a session titled: Hospitality is not Enough: Equity and Inclusion in Higher Education.

The conference focuses on the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Reduced Inequalities (10), Sustainable Cities and Communities (11), Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (16), and Partnerships for the Goals (17).

Housed at the Center for Archaeological Studies at the University of South Alabama, teams of students collaborate with an interdisciplinary group of dynamic scientists while conducting original research on two Arabian Bronze Age skeletal collections (2400-2100 BCE) over an eight-week period. As part of these independent research projects, students will examine how alternative pathways to social complexity were embodied in ancient human skeletal remains and reflected in burial traditions.

Americans encounter more religious diversity at work than in any other sphere of life, yet religion is too often left out of the diversity conversation. Many of us are uncomfortable talking about religion at work because we are afraid of offending our colleagues or wading into uncertain legal territory, but engaging religious diversity can lead to stronger team culture and better relationships with clients and consumers. Join Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) for a Professional Development Lab that will give you the chance to explore issues of religious identity and diversity at work, develop your interfaith skillset, and create an action plan for how you will engage religious and secular identity in your workplace.

This year, there will be a series of monthly (October-February) virtual training sessions over the lunch hour on Fridays. The Minnesota Urban Debate League is proud to present our 9th annual Mayors Challenge Debate Fundraising Breakfast: The Great Water Debate. This event will be hosted virtually by Augsburg University.

Four of our debaters from Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Roseville school districts will face off in two teams, articulating arguments on how we steward one of our greatest resources – water.

Our VIP panel of judges (and you!) will pick the most persuasive team.

You will also see how the MNUDL creates new opportunities for our students to be champions – both in and out of the classroom.

Governor Tim Walz (Invited) and Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz will host the Governor’s table. Mayor Melvin Carter, Mayor Jacob Frey, and special guests will judge our debate.

Americans encounter more religious diversity at work than in any other sphere of life, yet religion is too often left out of the diversity conversation. Many of us are uncomfortable talking about religion at work because we are afraid of offending our colleagues or wading into uncertain legal territory, but engaging religious diversity can lead to stronger team culture and better relationships with clients and consumers. Join Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) for a Professional Development Lab that will give you the chance to explore issues of religious identity and diversity at work, develop your interfaith skillset, and create an action plan for how you will engage religious and secular identity in your workplace.

Interfaith Ally Workshop on November 11

The Interfaith Ally Workshop provides participants with the opportunity to learn about a wide range of faiths and ethical traditions including Native Spirituality, Judaism, Islam, Hybrid, Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism and Atheism. Participants will hear the stories of community members from a variety of traditions and have the opportunity to learn through case studies. This workshop qualifies as an equity/inclusion event to help maintain good standing in the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program. The Interfaith Ally Workshop is a program of Interfaith at Augsburg and Campus Ministry.

Workshop on Friday Nov. 12: Applying for Paid Research Experiences in STEM

Want to learn more about off-campus research opportunities in STEM? The National Science Foundation supports programs called Research Experiences for Undergraduates or REUs.

On Friday, November 12, from 4:00 – 5:30 PM, Dixie Shafer of URGO will lead a workshop on how to search for and apply to paid off-campus Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs in STEM fields.

This will be a virtual event designed to help students learn more about how to search for and apply to summer research opportunities nationally as well as locally.

Bioarchaeology of Bronze Age Social Systems
The Bioarchaeology of Bronze Age Social Systems NSF-REU Site (Award #1852426) supports the training of undergraduate students in conducting collaborative research– from hypothesis formation to data collection, analysis, public outreach, and publication. Complementary instruction in professional development, ethics, and statistical modules are also incorporated in the program’s curriculum.

Housed at the Center for Archaeological Studies at the University of South Alabama, teams of students collaborate with an interdisciplinary group of dynamic scientists while conducting original research on two Arabian Bronze Age skeletal collections (2400-2100 BCE) over an eight-week period. As part of these independent research projects, students will examine how alternative pathways to social complexity were embodied in ancient human skeletal remains and reflected in burial traditions.

We will hold an All Saints service in chapel November 5 at 10:40 am. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. At this service we praise God for the saints who’ve gone before us, especially honoring ones who have been personally significant in our faith. We’ll also remember those who have died, especially in this past year. We celebrate and remember through song and prayer. Nov 10: Annual Thor Heyerdahl Conference 2021: Migration and Identity

You are invited to attend the Thor Heyerdahl International Day 2021 conference to be held virtually on Wednesday, November 10th from 9:00-15:30 CET.

The conference is a collaboration between the Thor Heyerdahl Institute, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Oslo, our Augsburg University (USA), and Vestfold & Telemark County Council. The conference will focus on the global subject of “Migration and Identity.”

President Paul Pribbenow will hold a session titled: Hospitality is not Enough: Equity and Inclusion in Higher Education.

The conference focuses on the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Reduced Inequalities (10), Sustainable Cities and Communities (11), Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (16), and Partnerships for the Goals (17).

During the June 9, 2020 University Town Hall, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. Four of our debaters from Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Roseville school districts will face off in two teams, articulating arguments on how we steward one of our greatest resources – water.

Our VIP panel of judges (and you!) will pick the most persuasive team.

You will also see how the MNUDL creates new opportunities for our students to be champions – both in and out of the classroom.

Governor Tim Walz (Invited) and Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz will host the Governor’s table. Mayor Melvin Carter, Mayor Jacob Frey, and special guests will judge our debate. You have a chance to join them as a VIP judge with your sponsorship!

ArcGIS StoryMaps allows you to create inspiring, immersive stories by combining text, media, and interactive maps, allowing you to publish and share your story around the World. Augsburg Theater Department’s Production of “White” Opens Tonight

Tickets for the Theater Department’s production of “White” by James Ijames, directed by Beliza Torres Narváez, are officially on sale!

Performances will be held on October 28th-30th at 7pm in the Foss Center!

All guests will be required to provide proof of vaccination and a photo ID in order to come to the performance. Along with this, all patrons must wear a mask inside all Augsburg buildings. Additionally, we will not be accepting late seating, so make sure to arrive at least 20 minutes before the performance.

Hmong Women Together: Hmong Historical Art Appreciation Event

Hmong Women Together is having a Hmong Historical Art Appreciation event that will discuss the history of Hmong art and how it has evolved over time. Join us to learn more about Hmong Art within the community and around the world. We will be having embroidery kits for you all to create your own art! Halloween goody bags will be distributed to those who attend. There will also be limited free food so bring your friends, come find out and have fun :)!

AGB Search firm has been engaged to assist with the provost search. Representatives from AGB Search are inviting faculty to participate in listening sessions. Listening sessions will be offered, via Zoom, on Mon. Nov. 1, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. and Thur. Nov. 4, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

Given the Zoom format, AGB Search has asked that each session be limited to 25 participants. If the response to the sessions warrants, a third session will be added. Please watch Amail for further updates.

Focused Conversation on Augsburg’s Brand Perception Studies: TODAY
