Chapel: Community Space Naming Loss and Seeking Healing

Join Campus Ministry and the Center for Wellness in Counseling today in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am in this interfaith time of community connection and shared healing at the outset of this academic year. Over the last year and half, the COVID-19 pandemic has generated deep loss among us and within our communities. We have witnessed the tragic loss of life on account of this disease around the globe, and some in our Augsburg community have experienced it intimately within their own circles of loved ones. We have also lost time and connection having navigated the complexities of lock-down, isolation, and ongoing social distancing. We have lost opportunities, hopes, and for many, a sense of security and wellbeing. These losses have taken their toll emotionally, physically, mentally.

On Friday, September 10 at 10:40 am, we as community will offer a time to publicly name our loss and seek healing pathways as we journey together as an Augsburg community. Our gathering will offer words of reflection alongside space for quiet and song. Every participant will have an opportunity to mark their own loss as another step on healing’s path. All are welcome.

Sign up to be a vendor during this year’s Taste of Augsburg Homecoming event. Interact with fellow students, alumni, and friends of the university while fundraising for your student group!

As a vendor, students are encouraged to sell a product (food, pom poms, etc.), or a service (carnival game, face painting, etc.). Groups are responsible for the cost of the product/service, but any profit made will be yours to keep.

Alumni Relations will be awarding up to $1,000 in seed money for student groups & athletic teams to help purchase supplies. Money will be awarded on a rolling basis until all money is spent.
Up to $100 for groups offering food—main or side dishes
Up to $50 for groups offering dessert or beverage items
$25-$50 for groups offering games or activities

Fill out the Seed Money Application by Friday, September 23, 2021.

Student Managers who wish to learn more about the updated process for posting positions and hiring student workers are encouraged to attend a virtual training session this Friday, Sept 3rd from 1-2 p.m. The session will cover creating requisitions, reviewing applicants, recommending students for hire, and the Human Resources onboarding process for new student workers. The first part of the training will show a typical posting cycle, while the second will focus on your questions.

You are invited to join students and professors from the Religion and Philosophy Department for a Fall Kick Off on Tuesday, September 21st at 4:30pm on the first floor of the Hagfors Center. Join us to learn more about RLN 100 & 200 and to hear from students and professors. We will share more about the majors and minors in this department, share a meal, and create connections.

Just as a reminder, masks will be required at all times when inside the Hagfors Center and participants must remain at a 6ft distance when eating. At a time when the local Somali community is facing a crisis of opioid addiction, we will hear the perspectives of a community leader and educator, an expert in culturally responsive peer recovery support, and a student. There will be time for questions from participants.

Sign up to be a vendor during this year’s Taste of Augsburg Homecoming event. Interact with fellow students, alumni, and friends of the university while fundraising for your student group!

As a vendor, students are encouraged to sell a product (food, pom poms, etc.), or a service (carnival game, face painting, etc.). Groups are responsible for the cost of the product/service, but any profit made will be yours to keep.

Booths tied to the football game will have an option to close at 1 pm.
Alumni Relations will be awarding up to $1,000 in seed money for student groups & athletic teams to help purchase supplies. Money will be awarded on a rolling basis until all money is spent.
Up to $100 for groups offering food—main or side dishes
Up to $50 for groups offering dessert or beverage items
$25-$50 for groups offering games or activities

Fill out the Seed Money Application by Friday, September 23, 2021.

The Impact of COVID on Faculty

Please join Ellie Olson, Director of Augsburg’s Center for Wellness and Counseling, for her session “Preparing to Be Back in the Classroom: the Impact of COVID on Faculty” this Tuesday, August 31st from 3-4pm on campus in the Marshall Room (Christensen Center). Despite our desire to return to campus with a sense of comfort and predictability, the semester ahead seems likely to be one of continuing challenge and transition. But we HAVE learned some things from the past eighteen months that we can use to our advantage as we approach the coming year. This session will create space for faculty to name and reflect on the emotional and cognitive impact COVID has had on them, with guidance on how to manage and respond to that impact as you enter the classroom again. The target audience for this session is teaching faculty and staff, but the session is open to all.

River Semester Launch Ceremony Invitation

After a busy summer of building new boats for the upcoming River Semester, we will be holding a short ceremony and launch for this year’s students as they head off for the river expedition on the morning of Friday, September 3rd. The group will depart from the Watergate Marina (2500 Crosby Farm Rd. in St. Paul) with a christening of the boats at 10am, and launch at approximately 10:30. There is some parking at the marina, with additional parking just down the road at Crosby Farm park. Once at the marina, you will want to walk down the dirt road to the river, where the two catamarans will be pulled up on shore.

Hosting International Students: Need a Few More

A new semester is just around the corner, and luckily we are expecting NEW international students to join us this fall—representing countries like Malaysia, Nigeria, Italy, China, Norway and Bangladesh to name a few!

Our office, the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), is looking for faculty and staff members who are interested in hosting our new international students for a dinner off-campus in your home.

Here are the details:
Date: Wednesday, August 25, 2021
Time: Pick up at 5 p.m. with a return to campus around 7 p.m.

We ask that our hosts pick up students from campus and return them once dinner is completed. The new incoming group will consist of 20+ international students.

COVID status: ALL the new international students coming from abroad are required to follow the CDC and MDH guidelines, with a required 7-day quarantine (unvaccinated students), and COVID testing on day 3-5 upon arrival.
All students will show proof of a negative COVID test prior to traveling to the United States (tested 72 hours before departure), proof of recoveryTu and/or proof of vaccination.

Any students needing quarantine, will have ended this period on August 25th. And will have received their first dose of the vaccine. All other students are fully vaccinated.

Arnesen’s book tells a story of gritty determination, thrilling achievement, and perseverance in the face of near despair and daunting odds in the bone-chilling cold of Antarctica.

Arnesen will present her book “Skiing Into the Bright Open,” and the event will include a moderated discussion, including Q&A session, led by Global Minnesota President Mark Ritchie.

Although implicit bias training is the first step in creating awareness, it is important to get to the next step of behavior change. Implementation of bias mitigation strategies can be challenging to achieve. Simulation-Based Training (SBT) can be the bridge between creating awareness and moving to action.
This session will delve into SBT and opportunities for partnering with equity and inclusion training to promote health equity. The webinar will discuss how deliberate practice of both recognition of bias and implementation of strategies to mitigate bias can be integrated into implicit bias training. Real examples of the partnership between SBT and equity and inclusion training will be provided and participants will have an opportunity to begin developing facilitation skills for leading SBT deliberate practice conversations

Interested in Hosting International Students for Dinner?

A new semester is just around the corner, and luckily we are expecting new international students to join us this fall—representing countries like Malaysia, Nigeria, Italy, China, Norway, and Bangladesh to name a few!

Our office, the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), is looking for faculty and staff members who are interested in hosting our new international students for a dinner off-campus in your home.

Here are the details:
Date: Wednesday, August 25, 2021
Time: Pick up at 5 p.m. with a return to campus around 7 p.m.

We ask that our hosts pick up students from campus and return them once dinner is completed. The new incoming group will consist of 20+ international students.

COVID status: All the new international students coming from abroad are required to follow the CDC and MDH guidelines, with a required 7-day quarantine (unvaccinated students), and COVID testing on day 3-5 upon arrival.
All students will show proof of a negative COVID test prior to traveling to the United States (tested 72 hours before departure), proof of recovery and/or proof of vaccination.

Any students needing quarantine, will have ended this period on August 25. And will have been offered to receive their first dose of the vaccine.
