Seth Lienard Going Away Party–Thursday, August 2; 3pm

submitted by collen@augsburg.edu

After over 10 years in the University Events office, Seth Lienard will be leaving Augsburg to pursue an opportunity to start his own business and pursue new opportunities in his music career.

I know that over the years, Seth has developed deep, positive working relationships with many staff, faculty and students from nearly every corner of campus. And, I imagine that those of us who share an office with him aren’t the only ones who would like to celebrate his many contributions to our community.

With that said, I hope that you will join us to celebrate Seth’s time and many, many contributions to Augsburg and to wish him well as he starts his next chapter at a going away celebration:

Saturday Event on Japanese American WWII Experience

submitted by aoki@augsburg.edu

As controversy rages over the separation of children and parents and subsequent proposals to incarcerate families, the Political Science Dept. is sponsoring an event that reflects on a past instance of mass incarceration of Americans. The event is co-sponsored by the Twin Cities Japanese American Citizens League.

Dr. Mitch Maki, President and CEO of Go For Broke National Education Center, will speak on the Japanese American experience during World War II. This event is intended specifically to raise awareness among students, but anyone interested is welcome to attend.

AUGSBURG EVENT
WHAT: Program on the World War II Japanese American experience
WHEN: Saturday, June 30, 10:00am-12:30pm
WHERE: Marshall Room Christensen Center

There is no charge, but food will be provided, so attendees are requested to email Carolyn Nayematsu (nayem001@umn.edu) with your name and any dietary restrictions. Students are asked to provide the name of their school.

Dr. Maki will also speak at 6:00pm that evening at the opening of an exhibit on the World War II Japanese American experience, at the Minnesota Historical Society, Fort Snelling. The exhibit will include a display on Japanese American students who attended Augsburg during WWII. Thanks to Professor Phil Adamo, who provided key assistance that made this possible.

Augsburg is hosting MN Private College Week June 25-29

submitted by asfeldk@augsburg.edu

You may notice an influx of prospective students and their families on campus June 25-29 as Augsburg University hosts families for Minnesota Private College Week!

Lot G is reserved all week for Admission guests, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, so please plan on parking elsewhere this week. Thank you in advance for all you do to help us recruit future Auggies!

If you see a guest during this time that looks lost, please assist them. The idea of this week is to welcome families to campus, introduce them to students and faculty, and share with them what Minnesota private colleges and universities have to offer. Our introductory tours and informational meetings can serve as a first step to help students discover just what they are looking for in a college — especially if they are early in the search.

There will be an open house from 9:30 am – 12:00 pm and from 2:00 – 4:30 pm each day that week, and most of the event will be held in the Hagfors Center.

Please contact the Office of Admissions if you have any questions. We are excited to have this large event on campus this summer to help grow the Augsburg community, and appreciate your help and patience.

Prof. Wanyama and Student Speaking at Hennipin County Commissioner Candidate Forum Thursday

submitted by svanoe@augsburg.edu

Hennepin County District 4 Candidate Forum
Thursday, May 3, 6:30-8:30 PM
University Lutheran Church of Hope 601 13th Ave. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414

ISAIAH, a state-wide organization of congregations, clergy and people of faith working for racial and economic justice in MN, is organizing this
Hennepin County Commissioner Candidates’ Forum to bring the debate on protecting immigrant families in Hennepin County to the forefront of this November’s election. Despite their low profile, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners oversees Hennepin County’s $2 billion annual budget and there are multiple seats up for election! Especially given the discouraging state of federal immigration policy, there’s a lot that can and must be done at the county level to protect immigrant families in our community from deportation. Come learn about what these candidates are willing to do to help make our county a safe place for all and ensure that this important issue receives the attention it deserves.

Speakers will include our very own Professor Mzenga Wanyama (currently facing the threat of deportation) and an Augsburg student, speaking from their own experience. Come show your support and get informed about this important part of this November’s elections!

Candidates Angela Conley, Megan Kuhl-Stennes and Peter McLaughlin have confirmed their participation

Relational Skills for Bridging Divides workshop May 7 – register today

submitted by eschenba@augsburg.edu

May 7, 2018
1:30-3:30 p.m.
Marshall Room, Christensen Center, Augsburg University

In this climate of political polarization, people with differing perspectives and opinions struggle to engage in productive conversation. We tend to be quick to defend or demonize, deepening the divide that exists in the American people. Even when we want to reach out to those with different perspectives, we often don’t know how.

This workshop offers a sampling of two different strategies to engage more productively. The first hour will be devoted to learning some of the skills developed by Better Angels for listening and speaking in difficult conversations. In the second hour we’ll put those skills into practice with a deliberative dialogue on How to Prevent Mass Shootings in the United States.

As participants in this workshop you will be the first to be invited to a full-day seminar on these themes and practices which will be offered on November 3, 2018.

Please join us on May 7. Register by Friday, May 4.
