We are pleased to announce Ruby Murillo as the new director of Latinx Student Services! Ruby comes to Augsburg from Inver Hills Community College, where she served as an academic advisor for TRiO/SSS, Traveler’s EDGE, undocumented, and DACA students. Ruby has a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Iowa State University and a master of science degree in student affairs in higher education from Miami University in Ohio. Her first day at Augsburg will be Monday, April 10. Please join us in welcoming Ruby!

After 17 years of dedicated support for faculty and student research, Bill Wittenbreer is hanging up his bow tie and moving on to his next act in life. In honor of his service and collegiality, the History Department and the library are jointly hosting a farewell party, and you are cordially invited. Please join us on Tuesday, April 11, between 3 and 4:30 p.m. in Lindell Library room 301 to wish Bill a fond farewell. Light refreshments will be served. Bow ties optional.

Bill’s last day will be May 1, so if you can’t join us on Tuesday, you still have time to stop by the library to say goodbye and thank Bill for sharing the past 17 years of his life with us.

Jila Nikpay, instructor in film, will be screening her original documentary “Dreaming with Lola” at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival on April 23.

“Dreaming With Lola” is a documentary short. Following her dream of owning a small farm, Khaiti Hallstein struggles with the uncertainty of her work yet keeps a sense of humor when faced with unexpected life lessons from her ducks.

The 2017 Augsburg Student Film and Screenplay Festival presented by the Fine Arts Film Scholars was held Saturday, April 1.

The festival was a juried screening of work created by Augsburg film students. This year’s festival programmers reviewed 24 films and 4 screenplays.

An additional “All About Bias” workshop has been added in May.

“All About Bias” is a hybrid, group-format e-learning workshop that is a part of the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program and provides an introduction to understanding and responding to unconscious bias in any workplace setting or interaction. Relevant to employees of all levels, participation in this workshop can positively impact all aspects of an organization. This workshop explores the hidden and pervasive nature of unconscious bias – how it works in the human brain, how it can impact workplace interactions and decisions, and how individuals can respond when they encounter it in themselves.

Congratulations to Jake Moore, senior film student, recipient of a Student Production Crystal Pillar Award from the Upper Midwest Emmy® Chapter/Foundation for his animated short film “Interface.” “Interface” is short animation that asks: What is time? Is it real? Why do we follow its seemingly strict structure? An intruder brings these questions to light.

Moore accepted the award at the annual National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences-Upper Midwest Student Production Awards ceremony held Friday, March 31.

Augsburg films were nominated in fiction, documentary, animation, and public affairs/community service.

At last week’s Memorial Blood Center spring blood drive Augsburg achieved its highest ever percentage of donations at 105% That means from just last week’s drive alone Auggies helped save potentially 103 lives!! Twenty-two donors were first timers — thank you. Eight donors were double red call donors — thank you, too.

CWC also wants to thank Taylor Mattice and the Student Athlete Advisory Council for their partnership in tabling and promoting the event as well as having student athletes assist the day of the donation at the snack bar area.

Thank you again and we will be back in October for our fall blood drive.

​I hope you will join me in thanking–and saying farewell–to Dr. Jim Gross, whose position as associate provost for academic innovation and strategic initiatives will end with the current academic year.


Jim’s last day will be May 12. A farewell reception in Rochester is planned for the last week in April – details will be shared soon. A reception is also planned in Minneapolis on May 3rd from 10-11:00 am in OGC 100.

We are working to ensure a smooth transition in Rochester and to ensure that the site has the leadership required to continue to strengthen our programs, partnerships, and presence in SE Minnesota. Until that leadership is secured, Ron Blankenship will serve as Interim Director of the Rochester site.

I am grateful for Jim’s commitment and service to Augsburg and for his partnership as a senior academic leader. He has helped develop a strategic plan for Rochester that aligns with Augsburg 2019 and focuses our attention on key priorities: (a) boosting enrollment in existing programs, (b) developing new programs that respond to the needs of the Rochester community, (c) enhancing the teaching and learning environment; (d) enhancing our reputation in SE Minnesota, and (e) positioning the College as a partner with a set of distinctive strengths in a community experiencing rapid growth and transformation. He has demonstrated keen awareness of emerging trends, a deep understanding of the contemporary landscape in higher education, and mature judgment when faced with tough questions. Perhaps most importantly, he has repeatedly shown himself to be a person of integrity, generosity, and character.

Academic program innovation that is aligned with our mission and institutional strengths, and responsive to the regional needs, remains a high strategic priority for the College. We remain committed to fueling the innovative and creative energies of our faculty, staff, and administration as we move forward.

We will be discussing creating a documentary to educate people about the pipeline. This documentary will include interviews with people who have been to Standing Rock. We will also be discussing Augsburg’s relationship with Wells Fargo because of Wells Fargo’s involvement with funding the pipeline. All are welcome to join us on Wednesday!

Please join the Admissions Office in a Farewell Open House for Brenda Hemmingsen, who will be leaving our office after almost 20 years here at Augsburg College. Brenda not only has been a huge asset to our office and campus community, but has been “Mama B” to hundreds of students throughout the years. We are forever indebted to her for her service and commitment to this institution and more importantly, to the her love of the students, past and present.

These drop-in hours are designed to expand access to career coaches and to accommodate impromptu student career questions as they arise. During Quick Stop hours students are seen on a first-come, first-served basis for brief, 15-minute drop-in appointments. These times are meant for quick career questions, brief resume or cover letter reviews, or help getting started with an internship or job search.

You may be able to do just that because of a grant awarded to Augsburg College. This program serves juniors and seniors who receive financial aid, improving their odds of graduating and preparing them to enter the workforce with real-world experience in their fields of study.

To be eligible:

* Students must be in good academic standing (2.0+ GPA).

* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship. (Second semester sophomores can apply as long as they hold junior standing BEFORE the internship begins.)

* Students must be eligible for financial aid (work study). Not sure if you are eligible? Email studentfinances@augsburg.edu or check your awards package.

* The internship must be related to your major or career aspirations.

* Internships will take place Summer 2017, Fall 2017, or Spring 2018.

This is a wonderful opportunity to offer support to the Twin Cities community. Just bringing in a pair of shoes you forgot about and never wore, or a warm jacket that got stuffed to the back of the closet could make a difference to those in need.

A Civic Studies Symposium
Tuesday, April 4, 4-5:30 p.m. East Commons, Christensen Center
* Today’s idea of politics refers to what politicians, parties, and party members do. It is based on a Manichean model that sees politics as war-like, reducing others to stereotypes.
* The Manichean model is widespread, built into today’s politics and civic action. It grows from an identifiable formula which pits the forces of “good” against the forces of “evil.”
* It is increasingly dysfunctional for those committed to an inclusive, equal, and just society.
This symposium looks at the nonviolent alternative to demonizing politics. It includes small group discussion about problems we share, differences among us, and what we can do.
It addresses several questions:
* How can we combine relational power and public love?
* How can we develop the skills to meet injustice with discipline and dignity, not demonization?
* How can we bridge today’s ideological divides, engaging others in their full complexity?

I am pleased to announce that Augsburg has established a new University Events department within the Marketing division, expanding the responsibilities of the Event and Conference Planning team and promoting Jodi Collen to senior director of University Events.

We’ve all seen how the work of Augsburg’s event planning team — Jodi, Seth Lienard, Sarah Cash-Darvell, plus their hard-working student crews — has a major impact in enhancing the event experience and reputation of the College. As the new University Events department, this core group will continue to lead the design, planning and management of Augsburg’s more than 400 annual live events — including signature events such as commencement, homecoming, scholarship weekend, and the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. University Events will also continue managing summer conferences and other external events that generate revenue for the College.

In addition, Jodi’s new role will include strategic leadership and project management to support major universitywide initiatives. Two significant institutional initiatives that Jodi has already taken on are the name-change transition to Augsburg University this summer and project management for the 2019 Sesquicentennial Planning Committee, co-chaired by Theater Arts Professor Darcey Engen ’88 and Athletic Director Jeff Swenson ’79. We are excited to extend Jodi’s project management expertise to these highly visible Augsburg initiatives.

We are currently in the process of updating the Inside Augsburg directory and other records with the new University Events department name. In the meantime, please join me in congratulating Jodi on her new role and thanking the University Events team for its ongoing leadership in creating authentically Augsburg experiences for our students, alumni, guests and campus community.

“The drought in Somalia is turning into the worst Famine in 60 years. Beginning of this month over a two day span over 100 people died in one area due to hunger. The people in Somalia need us as much as the ones we are working here at the Health Commons. Our work in the Health Commons involves providing resources and working together with the community to achieve optimum health. With many of the community we serve in our Cedar Riverside Health Commons having families in Somalia they are affected by what is happening back home. As part of Health Commons team I thought we can assist in contributing to making a difference in Somalia. Below is a non-profit organization I am volunteering with that is on the ground in Somalia and other parts of East Africa. I am reaching out to ask for donations and would like you to pass on the link for others to please donate.

* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship. (Second semester sophomores can apply as long as they hold junior standing BEFORE the internship begins.)

We are looking for contributions to artwork to be installed in the new Hagfors Center. Two artists are looking for text passages to accompany three pieces designed for the new building, and we are looking for student input. Selections of text may come from any literary work or religious text of any faith tradition, as long as they are inspiring and fitting with the spirit of the artwork. Display boards depicting the artwork designs will be posted around campus, where anyone may fill out a slip and drop it in the submission box. Did you visit your dentist over Spring Break? How many of us actually use the items in the goodie bag given to us by our dentists?

Bring these items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss) back to school and donate them to the Pre-Dental Student Club Hygiene Item Drive. We will be collecting donations from Monday March 20 to Friday March 31. Keep an eye out for boxes around campus.

We will be donating the items collected to local groups in need. We thank you for your support! If you have any questions about donations, please feel free to contact us at claytont@augsburg.edu .

The Christensen Center for Vocation and Campus Ministry are looking for volunteers for the Holy Hoops Basketball Tournament on Sunday, April 2. This is an annual basketball tournament that Augsburg College hosts for churches in the area. It is always lots of fun for participants and volunteers alike.

There are five volunteer shifts, and we encourage you to sign up for as many as you would like. These shifts are:
Set-up: 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Shift 1: 10:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Shift 2: 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Shift 3: 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Clean-up: 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

*If you would like to help, but have a schedule conflict and cannot sign up for a specific time slot, please let us know and we would be more than willing to work with you.

Court Host
Go-fer / Runner / Where Needed

Fairview Health Services is currently seeking applicants for Information Technology summer internships as part of the MSP TechHire Scholars initiative. Funding from the City of Minneapolis will enable Fairview to hire up to three Augsburg students, who will each complete a paid ($20/per hour) full-time summer internship within IT at Fairview.

Eligible candidates will meet the following criteria:
– Identify as a student of color, first generation college student (neither parent has a 4 year degree), and/or low income (Pell Grant or MN Dream Grant eligible)
– Major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Business Management
– Rising Senior in good standing at Augsburg (expected graduation in Dec 2017 or May 2018)
– Interest in pursuing an IT career within healthcare

Unfortunately, international students are not eligible for this opportunity

Semifinalists will interview on campus the week of April 10th. Internships begin on May 15th.

Hello Auggies! I am happy to announce that I will be running for class senator for the 2017-2018 academic school year. I want to be the eyes and ears of the student body.
