Congratulations to Three Spring Gilman Scholarship Winners

submitted by dvorak@augsburg.edu

THREE AUGSBURG STUDENTS AWARDED U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE’S GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP TO STUDY ABROAD!

The U.S. Department of State is pleased to announce that Jessica Mendoza, Erin Stene, and Bulungu Zanzu from Augsburg University were selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad this Spring 2020. Jessica is a double major in English and Sociology and will be studying in Central America on Augsburg CGEE’s Peace, Justice, and Community Engagement program. Erin is an International Relations major and will be studying in Jordan on SIT’s Refugees, Health, and Humanitarian Action Program. And Bulungu is a Bio-Psychology major and will be studying at Augsburg’s Exchange partner, the American College of Greece.

Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad or internship program. The Gilman scholarship supports American undergraduate students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad and, since 2001, has enabled more than 24,000 outstanding Americans of diverse backgrounds to engage in a meaningful educational experience abroad. The program has successfully broadened U.S. participation in study abroad, while emphasizing countries and regions where fewer Americans traditionally study. The Gilman Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Since 2008, sixty-one Augsburg students have received Gilman scholarships, totaling $241,000. Over the last 7 semesters, Augsburg’s Gilman win rate has averaged about 50% – of 25 completed applications in that time, we have had 12 winners!

Congratulations once again to Jessica, Erin and Bulungu!

73 Auggies shared their thanks with scholarship donors

submitted by youngs@augsburg.edu

Thank you to all 73 Auggies who took time out of their day to write a thank you note to donors who have given to student scholarships. It’s meaningful to express how generosity has helped you and it does make an impact when donors receive a personal, handwritten note from a student. They and their families (97 households!) who funded your scholarship awards will receive your notes this week, when many of us are thinking about gratitude and abundance already. Thanks for making this a priority in your day.

If you received an email from me about this, but did not yet get a chance to write a note, you still can. Just contact me and we can set up a time that works for you. Saying thank you is great at any time of the year!

Let’s End Pink Tax

submitted by stokesb@augsburg.edu

A collective of students has come together to create a proposal with the intent to install free menstrual product dispensers on campus. We feel it is essential to have access to free menstrual products on campus, as over half of the Augsburg community experiences a menstrual cycle, and not everyone has the necessary products on hand when they need them.

We are proposing to remove the current coin-operated dispensers in all restrooms and replace them with free product dispensers. Since most people don’t carry change on them, this provides an immediate barrier to accessing ‘essential’ bodily product needs. Given that many offices supply condoms and other birth control/STI preventatives – this inadvertently upholds patriarchal means of the “pink tax.”

The dispensers and products currently in use/disuse in Augsburg restrooms raise questions of sustainability as well as safety. The companies we have researched produce biodegradable products that are made of 100% organic cotton, no synthetics, rayon, or dyes.

Because we are committed to promoting trans inclusion on campus, we will be proposing the installment of dispensers in gender-neutral restrooms as well as women’s restrooms – knowing that menstruating isn’t just a ‘woman’s issue.’

By filling out this survey, you will be helping us determine the number of dispensers to purchase and where it is most important to install them.

Intercultural Comm and Conflict Styles Workshop

submitted by stokesb@augsburg.edu

Tuesday, November 26 3:40-6:40pm in Marshall Room, Christensen Center

This workshop makes use of the Intercultural Conflict Style (ICS) Inventory, which describes an individual’s preferred approach or style for resolving conflict by reflecting the individual’s culturally learned patterns for dealing with disagreements and expressing emotions. Additionally, this workshop will not only teach individuals about their own preferred approach and style, but also about the preferred approaches and styles of others. Finally, this workshop will give participants tangible skills that can be used when navigating communication and conflict across cultural differences. The increased understanding of intercultural communication and conflict styles and tangible skills participants will receive from this workshop can both enhance their overall intercultural competence, increase their effectiveness when working to resolve disagreements across cultures, and help them to create more inclusive campus spaces at Augsburg.

Confused about composting?

submitted by greena@augsburg.edu

compostingEven though we’ve had these trash, recycling, and organics bins for a while, it’s still confusing, right? Here are some tips and tricks the Environmental Stewardship crew has learned that we’ve found useful in helping make decisions when we’re tossing waste:

1. Does it say the word “compostable” anywhere on it? It’s compostable! Hooray! Look on the bottom of cups and silverware. Plates will not say “compostable,” but as long as it doesn’t feel waxy, it’s compostable. [All catering supplies from A’Viands are compostable!] “Biodegradable” is NOT “Compostable.”

2. Was it recently a living thing? It’s probably compostable.

3. Is it filmy or flashy? Does it have two different textures on different sides? It’s probably trash. Things coated in plastic (shiny) cannot be separated into their individual materials to be recycled.

4. If in doubt – TRASH IT! Contaminated dumpsters actually cost us extra money and cause problems at the sorting facilities.

If you’re still confused – don’t worry. Most of us are! Consumer products change often and are not always designed with an easy end-of-life in mind. Reducing consumption can sometimes be easier than learning how to sort waste, but when we do have waste to sort, let’s help each other out! And reach out to environmentalstewardship@augsburg.edu for support.

NOTE: The City of Minneapolis has detailed guides on what can go in each bin. If you’re googling to find out what to do with something, make sure you’re looking specifically at what Minneapolis or Hennepin County tells you to do with it. Not all municipalities have the same capacity to recycle.

Bottled Water Policy – Reminders

submitted by greena@augsburg.edu

Since May 2017, Augsburg has been slowly implementing its Bottled Water Policy, beginning with eliminating bottled water from on-campus catering, no longer reimbursing purchases of bottled water, and removing bottled water from vending machines. At the same time, we’re working to increase access to water through filling stations and free water bottles in the Campus Cupboard.

As you’re planning for events, please remember that bottled water purchases are not allowed through expense reports, P-Cards, Staples, petty cash, and invoices.

If you have questions or would like support finding alternatives to bottled water for your department, check out the Environmental Stewardship website below or reach out to environmentalstewardship@augsburg.edu. We are happy to help brainstorm ideas as we move towards loving our local water! And please share your own creative solutions so we can celebrate together!

Use your employee tuition benefit to study leadership

submitted by tuchten@augsburg.edu

Use your employee tuition benefit to study leadership here at Augsburg!

• Promote your professional development
• Increase your opportunities for career advancement
• Enhance your personal growth

You are invited to a lunch meeting (on us!) to discuss pursuing the three-course Graduate Certificate in Leadership Studies (GCLS) or the Master of Arts in Leadership (MAL).

When: Tuesday December 3 @ noon

Where: Augsburg Room in Christensen Center. Just go through the cafeteria line and tell the cashier you are with the Leadership Studies program. Bring your food to the Augsburg Room.

• Already have a master’s degree? The GCLS or even a second master’s degree will add a competitive edge to your resume. Graduate credits may even be transferred in from a previous degree.
• Have some college, but have not completed a bachelor’s degree? Come anyway! If you are interested in pursuing your education in leadership studies, we can help connect you to the resources to complete your bachelor’s degree (100% free tuition for undergraduate credits) on the way to graduate study.

We can provide you with contacts to current students and alumni working at Augsburg or on other college campuses, who have gone through the program and have become more successful in their careers.

Just let us know if you are coming! Register online at the link below.

Re-establish the faculty-staff discussion forum?

submitted by lapakko@augsburg.edu

Dear Colleagues: The “discussion forum” part of this website has been comatose for more than three years. (Many of you have probably never even been there!) Given my academic discipline, I think this is unfortunate and that the discussion forum is a place to (potentially) have some deeper and more civil conversations about a variety of issues. With that goal in mind, I have posted opening comments on two new topics: one related to the campus climate, the other related to “structures” and “marginalization.” If you are interested, please hit the “discussion forums” menu item (it’s in the “Community” section just below “university reports”) and become part of the conversation!
