Batalden Convocation: Interfaith Conversations on Racial Justice

The murder of George Floyd and the ensuing protests calling for racial justice have reverberated throughout Minnesota, around the country, and the world. How have these events disturbed and reoriented the understanding of racial justice? What does this reckoning mean for people who espouse a religious or spiritual worldview? How does this moment provide an opportunity to reaffirm, rearticulate, or revise how religious and spiritual traditions work towards racial justice?

The Batalden Seminar in Applied Ethics on February 8th, 11:00-12:00 will address these questions. It will highlight a video series of practitioners from differing religious, spiritual, and secular perspectives in conversation on the issue of racial justice interspersed with a panel discussion with the video participants and student respondents.

Transcultural Music Therapy Study Abroad in July – Apply Now

The Provost and Faculty Development Committee are pleased to offer two types of grants to support Augsburg faculty scholarship in Summer 2022 and/or during the 2022-2023 academic year.

The Scholarship Grant provides up to $4000 to support the scholarly endeavors of full-time Augsburg faculty.

The Provost’s Internationalization Grant provides up to $2500 to support the collaboration of full-time Augsburg faculty with an Augsburg CGEE Global site or with existing international partner institutions.

The Minnesota State Association of Parliamentarians is offering “Meetings Without Misery: Robert’s Rules for Efficient Meetings” as a virtual annual seminar this Saturday, January 29th from 8:45am-noon. It’s open to all and is designed for “anyone who would like to run or attend better meetings”.

WHAT: A 90-minute workshop (led by Drs. Tara Mader (HPE) and Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (BIO), the 2022-2023 coordinators of the ICD grants and workshops) that will (1) introduce you to the key components of integrated course design* (ICD), (2) work with you to plan an immediate, practical improvement you can make to a course, and (3) give you “preferred status” if you apply for a 2022-2023 ICD grant (open to full-time faculty, only).

This workshop is also designated as an equity and/or inclusion-based event that counts toward your Good or Advanced standing in the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program!

Presenters have 15 minutes to present in any way they choose (as long as it is compatible with synchronous Zoom). CTL’s theme for the 2021-2022 academic year is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, a broad topic that looks to our current “new normal” and beyond.

The Provost and Faculty Development Committee are pleased to offer two types of grants to support Augsburg faculty scholarship in Summer 2022 and/or during the 2022-2023 academic year.

The Scholarship Grant provides up to $4000 to support the scholarly endeavors of full-time Augsburg faculty.

The Provost’s Internationalization Grant provides up to $2500 to support the collaboration of full-time Augsburg faculty with an Augsburg CGEE Global site or with existing international partner institutions.

Both grant applications are open until Friday, March 4, 2022 at noon and funds awarded will be available beginning June 1, 2022. To read the full Call for Proposals for each of these grants and apply, please see the Annual Awards page of the CTL website.

In this time of the COVID-19 omicron variant, there will likely be more student absences due to mandated quarantining and/or a positive COVID-19 test, even though a student feels well enough to continue in the class. Although the “best” way to address this situation depends upon the course structure, learning outcomes, and pedagogies used, CTL has created some (mostly) universal “Do’s” and “Don’ts” for the classroom that can maintain student learning and minimize any additional work for everybody.

ED Talk January 19: “Better Teaching/Better Arguments: Argumentation Based Learning Experiences”

At its heart, every discipline teaches students how to make arguments- about gravity, viruses, truth, God, politics, etc. Unfortunately, for many instructors arguments in class seem like inviting conflict, distraction, and low course evaluations. And it’s true, if done poorly, argumentation in the classroom can be alienating, traumatizing, and counterproductive. But, when done well, argumentation in the classroom can build relationships, empathy, and more rigorous evidence-based learning. Join Bob Groven, Associate Professor of Communication Studies and Faculty Director of the MN Urban Debate League, for an overview of how to use argumentative experiences to create more dynamic, inclusive, and student empowered classes.

HECUA Ceases Operations

As of December 31, 2021, the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs, commonly known as HECUA, ceased operations.

HECUA’s mission was to offer off-campus academic programs for students to do integrative intellectual, political, and artistic work in support of movements for social justice, peace, and environmental sustainability in the U.S. and abroad.

HECUA had its roots at Augsburg, starting with sociology professor Joel Torstenson’s 1967 sabbatical report on community-based learning and his co-creation of the Crisis Colony the following year in the aftermath of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. From that commitment, both the Center for Global Education & Experience and HECUA were born. Over the years, many Augsburg faculty have supported HECUA’s work as board members and many staff have championed HECUA experiences for many students..

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the suspension of most of HECUA’s international programs and significantly reduced enrollment in its domestic programs. While HECUA did offer some limited programs over the last two years, the ongoing pandemic does not allow them to continue to operate.

This is disappointing news for Auggies who had been hoping to participate in HECUA programs in the future, as well as alumni, community partners, and others who have been touched by or supported the mission of HECUA. But HECUA’s legacy will live on through the thousands of alumni who are leading and fostering justice and peace-building efforts around the world.

At its heart, every discipline teaches students how to make arguments- about gravity, viruses, truth, God, politics, etc. Unfortunately, for many instructors arguments in class seem like inviting conflict, distraction, and low course evaluations. And it’s true, if done poorly, argumentation in the classroom can be alienating, traumatizing, and counterproductive. But, when done well, argumentation in the classroom can build relationships, empathy, and more rigorous evidence-based learning. HECUA Ceases Operations

As of December 31, 2021, the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs, commonly known as HECUA, ceased operations.

HECUA’s mission was to offer off-campus academic programs for students to do integrative intellectual, political, and artistic work in support of movements for social justice, peace, and environmental sustainability in the U.S. and abroad.

HECUA had its roots at Augsburg, starting with sociology professor Joel Torstenson’s 1967 sabbatical report on community-based learning and his co-creation of the Crisis Colony the following year in the aftermath of the assissination of Martin Luther King, Jr. From that commitment, both the Center for Global Education & Experience and HECUA were born. Over the years, many Augsburg faculty have supported HECUA’s work as board members and many staff have championed HECUA experiences for many students..

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the suspension of most of HECUA’s international programs and significantly reduced enrollment in its domestic programs. While HECUA did offer some limited programs over the last two years, the ongoing pandemic does not allow them to continue to operate.

This is disappointing news for Auggies who had been hoping to participate in HECUA programs in the future, as well as alumni, community partners, and others who have been touched by or supported the mission of HECUA. But HECUA’s legacy will live on through the thousands of alumni who are leading and fostering justice and peace-building efforts around the world.

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum Through the MINNE Fellowship

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

The 2022 trip will take place on April 5, 2022. Applications are due on February 21, 2022 and can be found at https://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. If you would like to learn more about the program or would like advising on the application, please contact the URGO office at urgo@augsburg.edu.

Spring 2022 has seats remaining in the online course “Playwriting: Exploring the Writer’s Theatrical Voice (PWC300).”

From the instructor, “In this course, the writer will develop a technique that is individual, yet grounded in fundamental dramatic writing skills. Students will read select plays by contemporary playwrights of color as inspiration and as a catalyst for their work. The class will analyze these plays to identify a variety of skills, themes, and concepts within four categories: Language as Identity, Intersection of Arts and Activism: The Playwright as Activist, Form, and Aesthetics, and Gender Narratives.”

There is a short application to fill out to be enrolled in the course as seats are limited. Deadline has been extended to January 3rd, or until seats are full. Courses count as Augsburg courses and can be taken as part of an Auggie’s regular semester load.

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum Through the MINNE Fellowship

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative.
