Join CTL Director Rachel Lloyd for this participatory demonstration lesson and introduction to the Paideia (pie DAY a) approach to designing and facilitating text-based discussions. In today’s challenging political climate, the skills of civil, civic-minded, and evidence-based democratic deliberation are a necessity. Paideia is a pedagogy that encourages student-centered, democratic discussions around a common text. It can be used with all ages and in all subject areas to foster a more inclusive learning environment.

Participants are asked to read the linked short story “Too Many Rules” (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1u08evSPnYcx3ioq_USedg2kBIUj2z4VVMeZqlYt3jnE/edit) by Anishinabeg-Ojibwe author, Anne Dunn, prior to the workshop, and come ready to discuss the text using this focusing short reading guide (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lWnTCztWEjwg0fK11am71Yxn5022hj9-/edit).

Breathe For Change is a movement of passionate educators and leaders healing ourselves to heal our world. We lead mind-body and social-emotional wellness trainings that unite, train, and support educators and community leaders in enhancing individual and collective well-being. We invite full-time Augsburg University faculty to apply for the fellowship program. Limited fellowships are available and fellows will receive a stipend of $500.00. Faculty from any department are encouraged to apply.

The goals of the yearlong fellowship are to develop new material for courses, new approaches to teaching, and to learn from other faculty members in the cohort. We will be leading workshops on religious pluralism, teaching religious diversity, and understanding how to engage worldview diversity in the classroom and beyond. If you’re not familiar with teaching religious and worldview diversity, this cohort is a wonderful opportunity to learn more and build your skills and familiarity with these topics. We will work with you to integrate content and skills in your context and academic discipline.

Sessions will include presentations on topics and the opportunity to workshop ideas with other cohort members. Some brief pre-reading will be required.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics students, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in February.

Online Writing Center Appointment Sign Up Sheet

Interested in having class outside? In Spring 2024, students in ENV/URB 492 designed and constructed a cart for use in outdoor teaching. The project was funded by a grant from Student Government’s Environmental Action Committee. The cart includes seating for 24, a whiteboard (can be used for projection as well), blackboard (with chalk), data projector (with battery & solar panel), clipboards, a folding podium, and Wi-fi hotspot. There are also guy ropes and stakes for stabilizing the cart if the wind picks up. For the truly adventurous there are optional tarps for rain or sun protection. The cart is available for classes or other groups to use. To reserve the cart, you can email Joe Underhill (underhil@augsburg.edu) to schedule a time for checking it out.

The Interfaith Institute, Religion and Philosophy Department, and Center for Teaching and Learning received a grant from the Interfaith America and John Templeton Foundations to implement a year-long faculty cohort focused on a campus wide effort on teaching religious diversity and pluralism. We invite full-time Augsburg University faculty to apply for the fellowship program. Limited fellowships are available and fellows will receive a stipend of $500.00. The goals of the yearlong fellowship are to develop new material for courses, new approaches to teaching, and to learn from other faculty members in the cohort. We will be leading workshops on religious pluralism, teaching religious diversity, and understanding how to engage worldview diversity in the classroom and beyond. The Augsburg Writing Center offers free writing support, both online and in-person. Skilled students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. The Augsburg PA Program is looking for Simulated Patients (SIMs) to participate in a few sessions for our students to get practice in a clinical scenario. Participants will get a scenario based on the Unit that covers a diagnosis or list of symptoms that they will need to report to the students in a simulated visit. Acting experience is not required and the scenarios never include invasive exams/procedures or administration of medication.

Each Simulated Patient (Sim) will be interacting with 3-4 groups of 3-4 students at a time with some break time in between each. Each opportunity will be paid at 25/hr and is usually 4 hours long. We will be hosting these at our clinical skills lab, just across from campus.

Over the summer, Augsburg updated our Moodle instance from 3.9 to 4.4. With this update, we were able to greatly improve the look and feel of our learning management system, as well as take advantage of new features associated with the update.

At first, you may notice the location of some features in Moodle 4.4 may have moved around, so in order to help jumpstart the creation of your courses, we have created this useful guide with some of those changes as well as common questions.

The Interfaith Institute, Religion and Philosophy Department, and Center for Teaching and Learning received a grant from the Interfaith America and John Templeton Foundations to implement a year-long faculty cohort focused on a campus wide effort on teaching religious diversity and pluralism. We invite full-time Augsburg University faculty to apply for the fellowship program. Limited fellowships are available and fellows will receive a stipend of $500.00. Faculty from any department are encouraged to apply.

The goals of the yearlong fellowship are to develop new material for courses, new approaches to teaching, and to learn from other faculty members in the cohort. We will be leading workshops on religious pluralism, teaching religious diversity, and understanding how to engage worldview diversity in the classroom and beyond. If you’re not familiar with teaching religious and worldview diversity, this cohort is a wonderful opportunity to learn more and build your skills and familiarity with these topics. We will work with you to integrate content and skills in your context and academic discipline.

The FAFSA Simplification Act implemented for the 2024-2025 school year was anything but simple. Errors, delays, and changes are still impacting students’ financial aid eligibility today! Because of all of the complications, many students are not completing the FAFSA, which gives them federal and state funding to be able to go to school. This workshop is designed to be a conversation about how we as a whole got to this point in time, what Augsburg has done about it, how it will continue to impact our students going forward, and how our campus partners can help!

Dear Augsburg Community,

Review of the proposed migration for all 475 current general education courses into the new curriculum is complete. Proposals submitted by each undergraduate chair/director were reviewed and compiled into a batch general education course migration proposal, to be submitted to AAC for their approval this fall. The new general education curriculum is planned to begin in fall 2025.

We are grateful to all the faculty and staff who have contributed this summer to this first phase of general education implementation.

In Fall 2024, Heather Brady of Grand View University (Iowa), will host four virtual conversations on the theme of community engagement and vocation. The purpose is to gather faculty and staff with some expertise and previous experience in this field in order to grow a community of practice. The outcome of these conversations will be to define the parameters and scope of the field, identify key concepts in the field, and gather resources to share out in a second conversation series, to take place in Spring 2025. At that time, a different group will participate in monthly conversations around the curriculum created by the first group in Fall 2024. The goal of the second series will be to inspire others who are less familiar with the topic to reflect on vocational exploration though community engagement. Both series will focus on themes of place and belonging, encounters with otherness, privilege and power, active listening, and visions of justice and equity. It is my hope that the dialogue created by these conversations will create new strategies for enlivening student learning.

There will be one virtual meeting each month, on Friday from 1:00 to 2:30 CST.

Participants will receive a copy of the book Called Beyond our Selves: Vocation and the Common Good, edited by Erin VanLaningham.

Over the summer the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Committee along with your eLearning Team researched and gathered 10 effective practices to include in your Augsburg curriculum. These practices apply to: In-person (since the course content is housed online in Moodle), Hybrid, Asynchronous and Synchronous Courses.

As you are putting your curriculum together for the upcoming semester, please consider the following guidelines that address what students need to succeed in an online course, and consider implementing them into your courses.

The program includes students from a wide range of disciplines and highlights diverse research methods and topics. This event is open to the public, and we encourage staff and faculty to come support these student researchers!

Starting this fall, Augsburg’s RN-BSN program will move fully online, offering maximum flexibility to registered nurses who are looking to advance their careers. At the same time, students will have access to Augsburg’s signature hands-on learning opportunities focused on transcultural nursing and health equity, including the Health Commons and global immersion courses in Namibia, Guatemala, and Mexico.
