River Semester Information Session and Social Hour

Students, staff, and faculty interested in learning more about the upcoming Fall 2025 River Semester are invited to attend an information session on Tuesday, Oct. 15th, from 5:00 – 7:00pm in Oren Gateway Center 100. We will share details of the 100-day expedition down the river, opportunities for faculty and staff guests, discuss course details and research projects, and answer questions about this unique opportunity for experiential education along this iconic waterway. URGO Offering Travel Grants for Student Researchers

URGO has a limited amount of travel funding to award this academic year.
URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible.

URGO has limited funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 10, 2025 and stipend or reimbursement checks will be distributed after submission of a project completion report, approved by the faculty mentor.

Please note that applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and funds will be awarded as they are available. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible.

Implementation planning for our new undergraduate general education curriculum, planned to be offered starting in fall 2025, is underway. In an initial implementation step, the Academic Affairs Committee (AAC) voted in support of the General Education Course Migration Proposal, a proposed plan for how all 475 current general education courses would be reorganized into the new general education curriculum. Next steps in general education implementation include updating the degree audit and general education resources, and developing new course offerings.

Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. Webinar: Introduction to Cursive Writing Analytics

This session will introduce a new tool Augsburg is piloting for the ’24/’25 school year. It leverages Moodle’s text editor (TinyMCE) to provide insights into student effort and revisions for writing in your Moodle classroom. While not an AI classifier, it does provide new essential data for understanding the student’s writing process and verifying the source of their submission, no matter your course policy towards generative AI.

Join CTL Director Rachel Lloyd for this participatory demonstration lesson and introduction to the Paideia (pie DAY a) approach to designing and facilitating text-based discussions. In today’s challenging political climate, the skills of civil, civic-minded, and evidence-based democratic deliberation are a necessity. Paideia is a pedagogy that encourages student-centered, democratic discussions around a common text. It can be used with all ages and in all subject areas to foster a more inclusive learning environment.

Join CTL Director Rachel Lloyd for this participatory demonstration lesson and introduction to the Paideia (pie DAY a) approach to designing and facilitating text-based discussions. In today’s challenging political climate, the skills of civil, civic-minded, and evidence-based democratic deliberation are a necessity. Paideia is a pedagogy that encourages student-centered, democratic discussions around a common text. It can be used with all ages and in all subject areas to foster a more inclusive learning environment.

Too Many Rules

River Semester Information Session

Students, staff, and faculty interested in learning more about the upcoming Fall 2025 River Semester are invited to attend an information session on Tuesday, Oct. 15th, from 5:00 – 7:00pm in Oren Gateway Center 100. We will share details of the 100-day expedition down the river, opportunities for faculty and staff guests, discuss course details and research projects, and answer questions about this unique opportunity for experiential education along this iconic waterway. Applications for students are now being accepted with an priority deadline for admission by December 15, 2024.

URGO Academic Year Research Funds

URGO has limited funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 10, 2025 and stipend or reimbursement checks will be distributed after submission of a project completion report, approved by the faculty mentor.

The Interfaith Institute, Religion and Philosophy Department, and Center for Teaching and Learning received a grant from the Interfaith America and John Templeton Foundations to implement a year-long faculty cohort focused on a campus wide effort on teaching religious diversity and pluralism. We invite full-time Augsburg University faculty to apply for the fellowship program. Limited fellowships are available and fellows will receive a stipend of $500.00. Faculty from any department are encouraged to apply.

The goals of the yearlong fellowship are to develop new material for courses, new approaches to teaching, and to learn from other faculty members in the cohort. We will be leading workshops on religious pluralism, teaching religious diversity, and understanding how to engage worldview diversity in the classroom and beyond. If you’re not familiar with teaching religious and worldview diversity, this cohort is a wonderful opportunity to learn more and build your skills and familiarity with these topics. We will work with you to integrate content and skills in your context and academic discipline.

Sessions will include presentations on topics and the opportunity to workshop ideas with other cohort members. Some brief pre-reading will be required.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 2-3 undergraduate science students, 1-2 undergraduate business/economics students, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in February.

Outdoor Classroom Cart Available

Interested in having class outside? In Spring 2024, students in ENV/URB 492 designed and constructed a cart for use in outdoor teaching. The project was funded by a grant from Student Government’s Environmental Action Committee. The cart includes seating for 24, a whiteboard (can be used for projection as well), blackboard (with chalk), data projector (with battery & solar panel), clipboards, a folding podium, and Wi-fi hotspot. There are also guy ropes and stakes for stabilizing the cart if the wind picks up. For the truly adventurous there are optional tarps for rain or sun protection. The cart is available for classes or other groups to use. To reserve the cart, you can email Joe Underhill (underhil@augsburg.edu) to schedule a time for checking it out.

Paid Simulated Patient Opportunity

The Augsburg PA Program is looking for Simulated Patients (SIMs) to participate in a few sessions for our students to get practice in a clinical scenario. Participants will get a scenario based on the Unit that covers a diagnosis or list of symptoms that they will need to report to the students in a simulated visit. Acting experience is not required and the scenarios never include invasive exams/procedures or administration of medication.

Each Simulated Patient (Sim) will be interacting with 3-4 groups of 3-4 students at a time with some break time in between each. Each opportunity will be paid at 25/hr and is usually 4 hours long. We will be hosting these at our clinical skills lab, just across from campus.

We will be leading workshops on religious pluralism, teaching religious diversity, and understanding how to engage worldview diversity in the classroom and beyond. If you’re not familiar with teaching religious and worldview diversity, this cohort is a wonderful opportunity to learn more and build your skills and familiarity with these topics. Jumpstart Guide for the New Moodle Update

Welcome Back Everyone!

Over the summer, Augsburg updated our Moodle instance from 3.9 to 4.4. With this update, we were able to greatly improve the look and feel of our learning management system, as well as take advantage of new features associated with the update.

At first, you may notice the location of some features in Moodle 4.4 may have moved around, so in order to help jumpstart the creation of your courses, we have created this useful guide with some of those changes as well as common questions.

Hello Colleagues,
I am scheduled to present at our back-to-school workshops on Thursday, August 22nd at 10:15 in Oren 113. The focus of my presentation will be on how faculty and staff can celebrate the assets of our multilingual students on campus and the value they bring to our classroom and our campus community. Attending this session will help raise awareness about this specific population and promote the principles of social justice and inclusion. Your presence at this session would be greatly appreciated if you are interested in learning about the assets of our multilingual students.

Using public transportation is an excellent way to get to know your city and neighbors, and it’s way cheaper than driving a dang car.
