Don’t Forget Your Mail

submitted by longj@augsburg.edu

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 15, 2023) we will be closing all student campus boxes. Then in August before the fall semester starts we will reassign them (possible new numbers) to all students living on campus. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey (https://forms.gle/jpUkovCEcqYBhsuBA) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be reassigned your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can also only forward to USA addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted. Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option. It is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the post office or the University, just the Mailroom.

All Faculty and Staff Event: Radical Self-Care With Dr. Joi Lewis, May 9

submitted by phalp1@augsburg.edu

Title: Find Calm in Chaos: Radical Self-Care in Uncertain Times

Date: Tues., May 9th

Time: 1:30-3:00

Location: virtual

For a variety of reasons, employees across the globe are feeling deep levels of burnout and languishing that, for many, has led to “quiet quitting” or literal quitting. We know that these challenges are often experienced even more acutely by BIPOC and non-majority employees, who exist within systems of oppression and who are often called on to do the work of dismantling those systems in more emotionally laborious ways. Given the increasing complexity of our work, as well as the emotional toll of the last handful of years, many Augsburg employees have expressed desire for opportunity for connection, engagement, and time to prioritize professional and personal care. This session, provided with the support of President Pribbenow and the Health and Well-Being Task Force, offers space for employees to take time out of the demand for productivity to intentionally focus on the health and well-being of ourselves as individuals within the Augsburg community.

From Dr. Lewis:

This session is a gift of time and space to take a deep breath together in community. We explore practices of Radical Self-Care and being “awake” that help create space for wellness, and thereby interrupt the effects of toxic stress and trauma, especially related to the world pandemic and racial injustice. By the end, participants connect with themselves and others more deeply and practice healthy expressions of grief, pain, and joy. Strengthening our foundations around radical self-care can help us all show up for ourselves, our loved ones and our community.

TODAY – Heat and Hot Water Shut Off

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

As previously communicated, this morning at 6 a.m., Augsburg shut off steam heat and hot water to much of campus in order to complete a needed steam valve repair in Urness Tower. This steam system shut off affects all buildings on campus EXCEPT Hagfors Center, Luther Hall, and Oren Gateway Center.

Below is a rough schedule of today’s repair timeline:
1) At 6 a.m. steam was shut off across the campus (except as noted above).
2) Our contractor is installing isolation valves in key locations on campus in order to restore steam to the portion of campus not affected by the valves in Urness. This will take approximately six hours.
3) Once the isolation valves are installed, steam will be restored to all buildings except Urness, Mortenson, Christensen, Old Main, and Anderson Residence Hall.
4) Our contractor will then replace the pressure valves in Urness, which they anticipate will take roughly another six hours. Once the valves are replaced, steam will be restored to the remaining campus buildings.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone’s efforts to accommodate this needed repair.

It is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the post office or the University, just the Mailroom.

Faculty and Staff Wellness Event May 9 With Dr. Joi Lewis

submitted by phalp1@augsburg.edu

Earth Day 2023 – Fight Environmental Racism

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

Earth Day 2023 – Fight Environmental Racism
SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 2023 AT 1 PM – 3 PM
28th Street and Longfellow Ave S, Minneapolis MN

On this Earth Day we should make it clear to Mayor Frey and cronies that Little Earth, East Phillips and supporters say NO to the demolition of the Roof Depot and the Hiawatha Expansion project. Adding the prospect of arsenic poisoning and the toxic fumes of hundreds of heavy vehicles to one of the most polluted neighborhoods in MniSota is not addressing climate change.

The people of Little Earth and East Phillips are overwhelmingly working class and BIPOC, and do not accept that Frey’s corporate and political interests are more important than breathing clean air and drinking clean water. The massive cumulative impact of pollution sources already in East Phillips was brought about by concentrating pollution in East Phillips. Fighting climate change can only be brought about by fighting environmental racism.

Full-Time Faculty: The Integrated Course Design Workshop Is Now Full

submitted by reederm@augsburg.edu

Participating in the Integrated Course Design (ICD) Workshop will change the way you think about teaching. It is offered to encourage faculty to develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based, equitable, engaging, and holistic course design. Based on the work of L. Dee Fink, the workshop is designed to offer participants a reframing of their work from “teacher” to “designers of learning experiences.” More than a collection of different teaching strategies, integrated course design is an overall system for thinking about how all course elements and strategies intersect with one another to create significant learning experiences for students — experiences which engage students with your content and lead to changes in the way they live in and understand the world.

When: Wed May 17; Thu May 18; Wed May 24; Thu May 25 ; 9am-Noon all days
Where: Augsburg University Campus
Who: All full-time Augsburg faculty members

Heat and Hot Water Shut Off Monday, April 24

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

Since early last week, we’ve had issues with the steam pressure valves in Urness Tower, which affects the hot water system in Urness, Mortensen Hall, Christensen Center, Old Main, and Anderson Residence Hall. We had hoped to delay scheduling the repair of this issue until after the end of the semester, but determined we need to be proactive because if the pressure valves fail to function, we would need to do an immediate shutdown of all heat and hot water on campus, with potentially a multi-day outage while we scheduled contractors for an emergency repair.

In order to repair the valves, our steam provider will need to shut off the steam system that provides heat and hot water to all buildings on campus except Hagfors Center, Luther Hall, and Oren Gateway Center. The buildings should maintain residual heat during the shut down, but students, faculty, and staff may want to plan to wear additional layers that day.

Below is a rough schedule of the repair timeline:
1) At 6 a.m. Monday, we will shut off the steam to the campus.
2) Our contractor will install isolation valves in key locations on campus in order to restore steam to the portion of campus not affected by the valves in Urness. This will take approximately six hours.
3) Once the isolation valves are installed, steam will be restored to all buildings except Urness, Mortenson, Christensen, Old Main, and Anderson Residence Hall.
4) Our contractor will then replace the pressure valves in Urness, which they anticipate will take roughly another six hours or so. Once the valves are replaced, steam will be restored to the remaining campus buildings.

Facilities Management has coordinated with several departments, including Residence Life, Dining, Athletics, and University Events, to plan ahead as much as possible for this needed repair. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone’s efforts to accommodate this maintenance work.

Psychological First Aid – Free Virtual and In-Person Trainings

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

Participants will learn:
· The impact traumatic experiences can have on individuals, and how burnout may impact frontline staff and first responders
· The five pillars of the PFA framework and how to apply them to support someone who has experienced a traumatic event
· How to recognize when an individual should be referred to a mental health professional

Campus Boxes Closing May 15

submitted by longj@augsburg.edu

Save the Date: Development Days in May are May 9 – May 11, 2023

Morning sessions will typically take place on campus in person and afternoon sessions will be offered over Zoom.

Look for a preliminary schedule and program to be posted next week! If you have any questions or are interested in offering a session, please contact CTL at ctl@augsburg.edu.

Grad Students: Attend a Zoom Roundtable Tomorrow (April 21)

submitted by cliftonk@augsburg.edu

Grad students from all disciplines are encouraged to participate in our upcoming Whole Leader Roundtable. Hosted by the Reell Office of Seeing Things Whole, these gatherings allow leaders the opportunity to network and provide insight to each other on today’s leadership challenges.

Our next Zoom Roundtable is Friday, April 21⋅12:00 – 1:15pm. This opportunity is open to current Augsburg Graduate Students. Contact Keri Clifton at cliftonk@augsburg.edu to register or to get more information.

WHAT TO EXPECT: One individual brings a challenge for the group to explore using the Seeing Things Whole Threefold Model to understand a “whole” way forward. Advice is not given, but questions are asked as the group supports the individual to discover the many dimensions of the challenge. Challenges can be anything the individual is navigating, including how to balance work and life, how to make professional decisions about a new career path, or how sustain oneself in a challenging yet fulfilling environment. Through the Roundtable, we build trusting relationships that support leaders to reflect openly and gain insight to tackle challenges. This process supports their ability to see things whole.

Full-Time Faculty: Integrated Course Design Workshop Is Now Full

submitted by reederm@augsburg.edu

The Integrated Course Design workshop is now full and anybody who would like to be on the waiting list should contact ctl@augsburg.edu directly. Thanks!

Earth Day 2023 – Fight Environmental Racism in Phillips

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

Earth Day 2023 – Fight Environmental Racism
SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 2023 AT 1 PM – 3 PM
28th Street and Longfellow Ave S, Minneapolis MN

On this Earth Day, Saturday, April 22 2023 we should make it clear to Mayor Frey and cronies that Little Earth, East Phillips and supporters say NO to the demolition of the Roof Depot and the Hiawatha Expansion project.
