Support for students without insurance – the People’s Center

After many years of quality service from Smiley’s Clinic, Augsburg is now working with the People’s Center to provide certain clinic services to students (all academic programs) who don’t have insurance for a $5 co-pay.

The People’s Center is located at 425 20th Avenue South, one block west from Augsburg, off Riverside Avenue.

➢ With a $5.00 co-pay, the following are available to Augsburg students who do not have insurance:
● Office visits for acute or chronic medical problems
● Annual physical exams – 1 per year
● Sexually transmitted diseases screening and lab work done at The People’s Center (lab diagnostics done outside of The People’s Center are not covered).
● X-rays performed at The People’s Center
● Tetanus immunization
● Lab tests performed at The People’s Center
● Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux)
● Casts, crutches, splints, slings and ace bandages
● Allergy injections (prescription and supply must be provided by student)
● Flu shots

➢ If you have health insurance, your insurance provider may cover medical services through The People’s Center. The clinic will bill your insurance for medical services and you will be responsible for any co-pays or deductibles associated with your insurance. You should check with your insurance provider to see if services at The People’s Center will be covered.

Smiley’s Clinic remains available for students – they accept most forms of insurance.

DPs will provide an escort to The People’s Center and/or to Smiley’s Clinic.

Summer Camps and Conferences Weekly Update

Many faculty and staff from national ELCA colleges and universities gathered on campus this week for the annual Vocation on a Lutheran College Conference. Participants arrived on Monday, July 15 and concluded their sessions on Wednesday, July 17.

Augsburg University started welcoming the class of 2023 as SOAR session A kicked off on Wednesday, July 17th. Around 170 first years are in attendance for the over night orientation session. SOAR I first-years will arrive on Friday, July 19th for their 2 day orientation to our campus community.

The Augsburg University Football team welcomed 40 athletes to a football camp this Wednesday, July 17th. They will work hone their skills and become familiar with campus during their time here. The Football Camp will conclude the morning of Friday, July 19th.

Augsburg’s Masters of Fine Arts Summer Residency is set to kick-off on Thursday, July 18th with approximately 40 students as well as many visiting guest writers. MFA Auggies will engage in workshops, evening readings, craft talks and much more for their 10 day stay on campus.

Augsburg University MFA in Creative Writing department’s 2019 Summer Residency will be on campus from Thursday, July 18 through Sunday, July 28. Please join us in welcoming our group of very talented students and acclaimed writers for this festival of craft talks, workshops, evening readings and more.

Forty writing students will be attending the ten-day residency, with about half of them living on campus. During the fall and spring semesters they work with their mentors and fellow writers from their homes in various parts of the country, with one student coming from Finland.

From the Pushcart Prize to the Pulitzer Prize, from the “Best American” series to the Minnesota Book Awards, it’s clear that literary communities are constantly comparing, judging, and awarding value. What does it mean to evaluate a text or a writer? How do we determine which book, fellowship application, script, or screenplay is the best? To what degree is literary appreciation subjective, and what criteria do we use to make these judgments? After we hear from a panel of writers who have judged and/or been judged, Jim Cihlar, publisher of Augsburg’s Howling Bird Press, will provide an overview of how the MFA student editors choose our annual prize winner and do the work of publishing and promoting the resulting book.

Julia M. Brown is Artistic Programs Administrator at the Playwrights’ Center.

Shannon Gibney won the 2019 and 2016 Minnesota Book Award in Young Peoples’ Literature.

Alayne Hopkins is Assistant Director of Programs & Services at The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, overseeing the statewide activities of the Minnesota Center for the Book, which include the Minnesota Book Awards program and other initiatives.

Members of the Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are coming together to create a Campus Share Shop for the students of Augsburg! Our purpose is to create a space where students can check out goods they need, rather than purchasing new items. By doing this, we hope to:
-Reduce the consumption of material goods
-Reduce students’ costs
-Create a community space where students can take part in informal learning around sustainable practices and skill-sharing.

This is a project created by students for students, so we are reaching out to you to find out what you would want to see in the share shop. Please take a few minutes to take a short survey that will aid in creating a share shop that will properly serve the students of Augsburg.

Meet with a Writing Center tutor online tonight

The Augsburg Writing Center is offering online instruction for students taking summer courses. The Online Writing Center allows you to video conference with a tutor and receive one-on-one feedback on your writing from a peer tutor. We use a combination of Zoom (for the video conference) and Google Docs (for you to share your draft with the tutor). As is true during an in-person session, you and the tutor will have a collaborative conversation about your draft during the online meeting.

Appointments are available Tuesdays 6:00-7:30pm and Wednesdays 4:00-5:30pm. The Forum will take place on Monday and Tuesday, October 28—29, 2019, and include active participation and engagement of classes and partner schools in plenaries, hands-on workshops, networking, and breakout sessions. We will have a total of approximately 15-20 speakers, including six activists from the Human Rights Foundation.

A normal class schedule will be held at Augsburg during these two days with opportunities for classes to attend the Forum sessions or have guest speakers visit classrooms. Augsburg MFA Graduate Student Readings

Augsburg University MFA in Creative Writing department’s 2019 Summer Residency will be on campus from Thursday, July 18 through Sunday, July 28. Please join us in welcoming our group of very talented students and acclaimed writers for this festival of craft talks, workshops, evening readings and more.

Forty writing students will be attending the ten-day residency, with about half of them living on campus. During the fall and spring semesters they work with their mentors and fellow writers from their homes in various parts of the country, with one student coming from Finland.

From the Pushcart Prize to the Pulitzer Prize, from the “Best American” series to the Minnesota Book Awards, it’s clear that literary communities are constantly comparing, judging, and awarding value. What does it mean to evaluate a text or a writer? How do we determine which book, fellowship application, script, or screenplay is the best? To what degree is literary appreciation subjective, and what criteria do we use to make these judgments? After we hear from a panel of writers who have judged and/or been judged, Jim Cihlar, publisher of Augsburg’s Howling Bird Press, will provide an overview of how the MFA student editors choose our annual prize winner and do the work of publishing and promoting the resulting book.

Shannon Gibney won the 2019 and 2016 Minnesota Book Award in Young Peoples’ Literature.

Alayne Hopkins is Assistant Director of Programs & Services at The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, overseeing the statewide activities of the Minnesota Center for the Book, which include the Minnesota Book Awards program and other initiatives.

Members of the Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are coming together to create a Campus Share Shop for the students of Augsburg! Our purpose is to create a space where students can check out goods they need, rather than purchasing new items. By doing this, we hope to:
-Reduce the consumption of material goods
-Reduce students’ costs
-Create a community space where students can take part in informal learning around sustainable practices and skill-sharing.

This is a project created by students for students, so we are reaching out to you to find out what you would want to see in the share shop. Please take a few minutes to take a short survey that will aid in creating a share shop that will properly serve the students of Augsburg.

We are currently looking for unopened jellies, extra mac and cheese boxes, rice or soup mixes, and cans of tuna. However any donations are welcome and greatly appreciated. We do ask that the expiration date on these items are with in the last three years to insure safety and quality. If you hav eany donations please feel free to stop by the cupboard located in Foss by the chapel during open hours:

Dear Augsburg Students, Faculty, and Staff,
You are invited to participate in a research study on Predicting Maximal Oxygen Consumption with a Single Stage Auggie Skate Test. Research subjects are asked to be within 18-60 years old, healthy, active, moderately-fit male or female, and is a competent skater. You will be asked to complete a bruce protocol treadmill test to volitional fatigue and to return 48 hours later to complete a leisurely ice skating assessment. You will be compensated upon completion of each test with a $5 cash for a total of $10.

Augsburg MFA Graduate Student Readings

Augsburg University MFA in Creative Writing department’s 2019 Summer Residency will be on campus from Thursday, July 18 through Sunday, July 28. Please join us in welcoming our group of very talented students and acclaimed writers for this festival of craft talks, workshops, evening readings and more.

Forty writing students will be attending the ten-day residency, with about half of them living on campus. During the fall and spring semesters they work with their mentors and fellow writers from their homes in various parts of the country, with one student coming from Finland.

From the Pushcart Prize to the Pulitzer Prize, from the “Best American” series to the Minnesota Book Awards, it’s clear that literary communities are constantly comparing, judging, and awarding value. What does it mean to evaluate a text or a writer? How do we determine which book, fellowship application, script, or screenplay is the best? To what degree is literary appreciation subjective, and what criteria do we use to make these judgments? After we hear from a panel of writers who have judged and/or been judged, Jim Cihlar, publisher of Augsburg’s Howling Bird Press, will provide an overview of how the MFA student editors choose our annual prize winner and do the work of publishing and promoting the resulting book.

Shannon Gibney won the 2019 and 2016 Minnesota Book Award in Young Peoples’ Literature.

Meet with a Writing Center tutor online tonight

The Augsburg Writing Center is offering online instruction for students taking summer courses. The Online Writing Center allows you to video conference with a tutor and receive one-on-one feedback on your writing from a peer tutor. We use a combination of Zoom (for the video conference) and Google Docs (for you to share your draft with the tutor). As is true during an in-person session, you and the tutor will have a collaborative conversation about your draft during the online meeting.

Members of the Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are coming together to create a Campus Share Shop for the students of Augsburg! Our purpose is to create a space where students can check out goods they need, rather than purchasing new items. By doing this, we hope to:
-Reduce the consumption of material goods
-Reduce students’ costs
-Create a community space where students can take part in informal learning around sustainable practices and skill-sharing.

This is a project created by students for students, so we are reaching out to you to find out what you would want to see in the share shop. Please take a few minutes to take a short survey that will aid in creating a share shop that will properly serve the students of Augsburg.

Please plan ahead for the Friday, July 5th pay date as the Accounting/Payroll office will be closed on Thursday July 4th and Friday July 5th.
The deadline for payroll hour submission is 2pm on Monday July 1st, you will be locked out of the system after this point and any hours submitted after this time may not be paid until the next payroll pay date. It is important that hours are logged daily as your work them. This allows for greater accuracy in reporting, helps identify an issues sooner and it guarantees any hours entered will be paid regardless of access and/or illness related issues/delays.
Managers please make sure all time is approved by 10am on Tuesday July 2nd. Lilly Network Grant Opportunities for Faculty and Staff

As members of the Lilly Network of Church-related Colleges and Universities, we are invited to apply to the Network’s Small Grant program.

Lilly Network grants are designed to forward the mission of the Lilly Network, which is to strengthen the quality and shape the character of church-related higher learning. Proposals are due September 15th and should directly or indirectly advance this mission at a local Lilly Network campus, among several campuses, or in a collaborative space.

Proposals will be accepted for the following programs:

Faculty Development / Mentoring – $3,000-$12.000

These grants are intended to help nurture faculty at all stages of their careers at Network institutions and strengthen the commitment of faculty to institutional mission.

Regional Collaboration / Conferences – $12,500

AUGSBURG STUDENT KYLE HUISMAN AWARDED U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE’S GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP TO STUDY ABROAD!

The U.S. Department of State is pleased to announce that Kyle Huisman from Augsburg University was selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad this Fall 2019. Kyle is a Film major and will be studying in Kofu, Japan on Augsburg’s Exchange program with Yamanashi Gakuin University (iCLA).

Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad or internship program. The Gilman scholarship supports American undergraduate students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad and, since 2001, has enabled more than 24,000 outstanding Americans of diverse backgrounds to engage in a meaningful educational experience abroad. The program has successfully broadened U.S. participation in study abroad, while emphasizing countries and regions where fewer Americans traditionally study. The Gilman Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Since 2008, fifty seven Augsburg students have received Gilman scholarships, totaling $222,500.

Summer Camps and Conferences Weekly Update

Augsburg University to home to many camps and conferences throughout the summer months. In an effort to keep our community up to date about our campus visitors, University Events will be posting weekly updates here!

This week, the Augsburg Youth Theology Institute and Summer Math Institute are continuing their studies on campus and will be departing at the end of this week. Minnesota Urban Debate League is also on campus this week and will be on campus through mid-July. We are also welcoming Cross Country onto campus today! They will be on campus through the rest of the week. Over the holiday week, we will have UDL staying on campus.

If you don’t see the newsletter in your inbox, check your Spam folder. Find the newsletter, open it, and click the “Not Spam” button at the top of your Gmail screen. That way the next newsletter submission will beautifully end up in your regular inbox. Just the way we want it!
