We will meet for two in-person sessions in May (16 and 18), gather on Zoom in August to share intended practices, and enjoy two meals together (in October & November). A stipend of $800 will be awarded to participants. Leaders of the working group are Jennie Diaz (Education), Mary Lowe (Religion & Batalden Faculty Scholar), and Erin Sugrue (Social Work). Title: Find Calm in Chaos: Radical Self-Care in Uncertain Times

For a variety of reasons, employees across the globe are feeling deep levels of burnout and languishing that, for many, has led to “quiet quitting” or literal quitting. We know that these challenges are often experienced even more acutely by BIPOC and non-majority employees, who exist within systems of oppression and who are often called on to do the work of dismantling those systems in more emotionally laborious ways. Given the increasing complexity of our work, as well as the emotional toll of the last handful of years, many Augsburg employees have expressed desire for opportunity for connection, engagement, and time to prioritize professional and personal care. This session, provided with the support of President Pribbenow and the Health and Well-Being Task Force, offers space for employees to take time out of the demand for productivity to intentionally focus on the health and well-being of ourselves as individuals within the Augsburg community.

From Dr. Lewis:

This session is a gift of time and space to take a deep breath together in community. We explore practices of Radical Self-Care and being “awake” that help create space for wellness, and thereby interrupt the effects of toxic stress and trauma, especially related to the world pandemic and racial injustice. By the end, participants connect with themselves and others more deeply and practice healthy expressions of grief, pain, and joy. Strengthening our foundations around radical self-care can help us all show up for ourselves, our loved ones and our community.

Environmental Stewardship Team Celebrates and Reflects

Yesterday, past and current Environmental Stewardship team (ESC) members gathered in the Community Garden to celebrate this year’s accomplishments, reminisce about fun times we’ve had together, eat local food, and reflect on what the work and team has meant to each of us. Thank you Alexa Carrera, Alyssa Parkhurst, Annabella Castillo, Elan Quezada Hoffman, Elijah Abdullah, Gigi Huerta Herrera, Grace Muchahary, Malachi Owens, Mercy Zou Taithul, Summer Bordon, Wren Doyle, Yousra Tinsley, and Zoe Barany for your leadership, stewardship, and collective action.

In a tradition started this year, graduates from 2022 and 2023 ESC teams planted Arikara Yellows Beans. This planting acts as a symbol of the gifts each of our graduates, Alexa, Alyssa, Elan, Gigi, Grace, Mercy, and Zoe, have given to the work of advancing environmental sustainability at Augsburg and in our neighborhood. Campus Mailboxes Closing May 15

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 15, 2023) we will be closing all student campus boxes. Then in August before the fall semester starts we will reassign them (possible new numbers) to all students living on campus. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey (https://forms.gle/jpUkovCEcqYBhsuBA) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be reassigned your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can also only forward to USA addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted. Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option. It is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the post office or the University, just the Mailroom.

We are hosting a 5k run/walk up at Snail Lake on May 6th at 5:30pm. Register for our in-person race and join us on the route or run from home with a virtual option!

Are you looking for decorations to spruce up your graduation party or baby shower? Maybe you want to make a selfie wall for another event? I have some decorations to give away. They are made with craft paint and paper plates. They look similar to the ones on this website, except mine are painted with pastel paint: https://onelittleproject.com/paper-plate-flowers/

I made them for a fundraising breakfast event where we didn’t end up needing them. I have about 25 made already. I will give you the craft paint, paper plates, and brass fasteners needed to finish the job if you have a reason to put them to good use.

For a variety of reasons, employees across the globe are feeling deep levels of burnout and languishing that, for many, has led to “quiet quitting” or literal quitting. We know that these challenges are often experienced even more acutely by BIPOC and non-majority employees, who exist within systems of oppression and who are often called on to do the work of dismantling those systems in more emotionally laborious ways. Given the increasing complexity of our work, as well as the emotional toll of the last handful of years, many Augsburg employees have expressed desire for opportunity for connection, engagement, and time to prioritize professional and personal care. This session, provided with the support of President Pribbenow and the Health and Well-Being Task Force, offers space for employees to take time out of the demand for productivity to intentionally focus on the health and well-being of ourselves as individuals within the Augsburg community.

This session is a gift of time and space to take a deep breath together in community. We explore practices of Radical Self-Care and being “awake” that help create space for wellness, and thereby interrupt the effects of toxic stress and trauma, especially related to the world pandemic and racial injustice. By the end, participants connect with themselves and others more deeply and practice healthy expressions of grief, pain, and joy. Strengthening our foundations around radical self-care can help us all show up for ourselves, our loved ones and our community.

Where is your mail going?

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 15, 2023) we will be closing all student campus boxes. Then in August before the fall semester starts we will reassign them (possible new numbers) to all students living on campus. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey (https://forms.gle/jpUkovCEcqYBhsuBA) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be reassigned your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can also only forward to USA addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted. Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option. It is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the post office or the University, just the Mailroom.

We are hosting a 5k run/walk up at Snail Lake on May 6th at 5:30pm. Register for our in-person race and join us on the route or run from home with a virtual option!

Registration is $30/person and includes a bib and steel water bottle. Snacks and water will be provided, and we will have prizes at the end!

The Minnesota Debate & Advocacy Workshop (MDAW) is the Minnesota Urban Debate League’s Summer Speech & Debate Camp.

This year, we are offering 15 camps for middle and high school students. They are day camps hosted in-person at Augsburg University in Minneapolis and include:

• Policy Debate
• Lincoln Douglas
• Public Forum
• Speech (now with high school option!)
• Student Congress/Congressional Debate
• Basic Debate & Argumentation

IMPORTANT: We don’t want finances to be a barrier to participation!

MDAW is committed to providing financial aid for students who apply during registration. There are two ways to get scholarships:

1) If the student has a C or higher average and is free and reduced lunch eligible, they can get up to $1,000 in camp tuition from the Office of Higher Education.

2) If the student is facing other financial difficulties, but doesn’t meet that criteria, they can still apply for financial aid and earn $$ to attend via MNUDL. Payment plans are also available.

Paid Opportunity: Seeking Judges for the East African Debate League, $55/Tournament

We Need YOUR Help To Judge Upcoming East African Debate Tournaments!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students. We have an upcoming opportunity for folks who want to earn extra money while doing good for the community.

The East African Debate season is coming soon! In this program, middle and high school students from the East African community debate a topic they choose that is central to their identity and life in the Twin Cities.

We are seeking judges to volunteer in person on weeknights in schools across the Twin Cities, paid $55 per tournament. The East African Debate tournaments will be held on Tuesday, May 9th and Tuesday, May 23rd. Please sign up on these dates to initiate the signup process!

New Trauma-Informed Pedagogy Faculty Working Group

Join other faculty to learn about trauma-informed pedagogy and ways to implement trauma-informed strategies into your fall courses. We will meet for two in-person sessions in May (16 and 18), gather on Zoom in August to share intended practices, and enjoy two meals together (in October & November). A stipend of $800 will be awarded to participants. Leaders of the working group are Jennie Diaz (Education), Mary Lowe (Religion & Batalden Faculty Scholar), and Erin Sugrue (Social Work). Please submit a short application (150-300-words) that addresses these questions: Why are you interested in participating in the trauma-informed pedagogy working group? How will learning about trauma-informed pedagogy help you better meet the needs of Augsburg’s students? Email your response to lowe@augsburg.edu by Saturday, May 6th. Disability Visibility Book Club in Fall 2023

Earlier this semester, the CLASS Office and Lindell Library hosted a wonderful discussion of Part 1 of Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century, edited by Alice Wong. We’d love to have students, faculty, and staff join us again in Fall 2023 to discuss Parts 2 and 3 as well.

Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk in Lindell Library through the summer. Stop by and grab a copy before you start your summer break. Book club dates will be announced in the fall.

Remembering Glen Person ’47

Dear Augsburg Community,

I write with deep appreciation, respect, and a heavy heart to share the news that Regent Emeritus Glen Person ’47 passed away on April 25 at the age of 98.

A WWII Navy veteran, Glen graduated from Augsburg with degrees in mathematics and business. In 1948 he started as a bookkeeper at Fidelity and Casualty Co., and left in 1968 as its bond manager. From 1969 until his retirement in 1989, he was an accounting manager and bond vice president at W.A. Lang Company. Glen married a fellow Auggie, Marilyn (Ekse) Person ’48, and together they raised two daughters.

Through philanthropy and service, Glen maintained an ongoing commitment to Augsburg and our students all during his lifetime. He served as a member of Augsburg’s Board of Regents from 1993–2005. He was an avid supporter of athletics, an active member of the A-club, and a member of the Claire Strommen Golf Tournament Committee. He was a significant contributor to the Pastor Dave Wold Press Box at Edor Nelson Field, the Jeroy Carlson A-Club Hospitality/Classroom, and the Dick “Pork Chop” Thompson Hospitality Room. Known for his priceless storytelling and a love of Augsburg that was second to none, Glen received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2006.

You can learn more about Glen’s remarkable life in his obituary. A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Eden Prairie. Please join me in gratitude for the life of this devoted and influential member of our community, and in holding his family and friends in prayer.

I made them for a fundraising breakfast event where we didn’t end up needing them. I have about 25 made already. I will give you the craft paint, paper plates, and brass fasteners needed to finish the job if you have a reason to put them to good use.

Steam Shutdown: TODAY

The steam shut down to repair the steam valves last week went very well and was successful. Unfortunately when the steam was turned back on another leak was identified in the Foss building. We have scheduled this repair with our mechanical contractor and Cordia, our steam supplier, for TODAY starting at 7 a.m. The shut down is anticipated to be from 4 to 6 hours to make the repair. This will affect the heat and hot water in all campus buildings except for OGC, Luther, and Hagfors Center.

Applications are Now Open for the 2023-24 PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2023 (graduating by December ‘25)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 17 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 26 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Title: Find Calm in Chaos: Radical Self-Care in Uncertain Times

For a variety of reasons, employees across the globe are feeling deep levels of burnout and languishing that, for many, has led to “quiet quitting” or literal quitting. We know that these challenges are often experienced even more acutely by BIPOC and non-majority employees, who exist within systems of oppression and who are often called on to do the work of dismantling those systems in more emotionally laborious ways. Given the increasing complexity of our work, as well as the emotional toll of the last handful of years, many Augsburg employees have expressed desire for opportunity for connection, engagement, and time to prioritize professional and personal care. This session, provided with the support of President Pribbenow and the Health and Well-Being Task Force, offers space for employees to take time out of the demand for productivity to intentionally focus on the health and well-being of ourselves as individuals within the Augsburg community.

From Dr. Lewis:

This session is a gift of time and space to take a deep breath together in community. We explore practices of Radical Self-Care and being “awake” that help create space for wellness, and thereby interrupt the effects of toxic stress and trauma, especially related to the world pandemic and racial injustice. By the end, participants connect with themselves and others more deeply and practice healthy expressions of grief, pain, and joy. Strengthening our foundations around radical self-care can help us all show up for ourselves, our loved ones and our community.

Earlier this semester, the CLASS Office and Lindell Library hosted a wonderful discussion of Part 1 of Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century, edited by Alice Wong. We’d love to have students, faculty, and staff join us again in Fall 2023 to discuss Parts 2 and 3 as well.

Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk in Lindell Library through the summer. Stop by and grab a copy before you start your summer break. Book club dates will be announced in the fall.

Get Your Mail Over the Summer

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 15, 2023) we will be closing all student campus boxes. Then in August before the fall semester starts we will reassign them (possible new numbers) to all students living on campus. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey (https://forms.gle/jpUkovCEcqYBhsuBA) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be reassigned your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can also only forward to USA addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted. Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option. It is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the post office or the University, just the Mailroom.

The Bonner Community Leaders (BCL) program is a part of a nationally recognized network of leadership and scholarship programs through the Bonner Foundation. Augsburg BCL is an intentionally diverse cohort of 20-25 students who commit to doing civic and community-based work and contribute to building a more just world, working in and with communities surrounding Augsburg University. BCL is ideally a 4-year program (students with at least 2 years left at Augsburg are welcome to apply), where students build deep relationships with a cohort of justice-minded peers and staff who support them throughout their academic journey. BCL contributes to Augsburg’s mission to educate students to be informed citizens, thoughtful stewards, critical thinkers and responsible leaders.

Songs of Hope and Healing

The music therapy program is hosting, Songs of Hope and Healing on Friday, April 28, 2023, at 7 pm in Sateren Auditorium. The evening will feature songs board-certified music therapists have composed in music therapy sessions with clients. These songs reflect client’s experiences as of navigating challenges with their health and in life. These songs are artifacts that communicate and express their emotions, and experiences, and foster a connection with others. The concert is also designed to be an arts-based research experience in which concert attendees have the opportunity to hear and experience songs composed in the context of music therapy sessions. Attendees that complete informed consent will be given a brief questionnaire to complete at the end of the concert. The questionnaire will focus on their experiences of listening to and hearing the songs created by clients in music therapy sessions shared during the concert.

Full-Time Faculty: Only 1 Seat Remaining for the Integrated Course Design Workshop in May

Participating in the Integrated Course Design (ICD) Workshop will change the way you think about teaching. It is offered to encourage faculty to develop their knowledge and skills in evidence-based, equitable, engaging, and holistic course design. Based on the work of L. Dee Fink, the workshop is designed to offer participants a reframing of their work from “teacher” to “designers of learning experiences.” More than a collection of different teaching strategies, integrated course design is an overall system for thinking about how all course elements and strategies intersect with one another to create significant learning experiences for students — experiences which engage students with your content and lead to changes in the way they live in and understand the world.

Full-Time Faculty: Only 3 Seats Left for the Scholarly Writing Retreat in May

Do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat at the Dunrovin Retreat Center. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. There is no cost to you for this retreat — The Center for Teaching and Learning will cover room and board (and WiFi). We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 5:00 pm on Sunday May 14th and ends at 3:00 pm on Tuesday May 16th. Space is limited to 18 full-time faculty members.

Each year the Faculty Development Committee (FDC) and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) create and coordinate Augsburg’s Development Days in May (DDM, formerly 3 Days in May). These three days are set-aside to allow faculty (and others) to participate in professional development opportunities on campus at no cost. This year, DDM will take place Tuesday May 9 through Thursday May 11, 8:30-3:00 pm each day. Morning sessions will typically take place on campus in person and afternoon sessions will be offered over Zoom.

Songs of Hope and Healing

The music therapy program is hosting, Songs of Hope and Healing on Friday, April 28, 2023, at 7 pm in Sateren Auditorium. The evening will feature songs board-certified music therapists have composed in music therapy sessions with clients. These songs reflect client’s experiences as of navigating challenges with their health and in life. These songs are artifacts that communicate and express their emotions, and experiences, and foster a connection with others. The concert is also designed to be an arts-based research experience in which concert attendees have the opportunity to hear and experience songs composed in the context of music therapy sessions. Attendees that complete informed consent will be given a brief questionnaire to complete at the end of the concert. The questionnaire will focus on their experiences of listening to and hearing the songs created by clients in music therapy sessions shared during the concert.

Psychological First Aid—Free Trainings, Virtual and In-Person

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-informed 2-hour virtual training for all community members and professionals. Trainees will learn how to support healthy recovery in individuals following a traumatic event, public health emergency, natural disaster, or personal crisis. The curriculum integrates public health, community health and individual psychology by drawing upon skills the trainees probably already have. The goal of PFA is to teach trainees how to reduce distress and negative health behaviors by providing practical help and promote resilience.

Participants will learn:
· The impact traumatic experiences can have on individuals, and how burnout may impact frontline staff and first responders
· The five pillars of the PFA framework and how to apply them to support someone who has experienced a traumatic event
· How to recognize when an individual should be referred to a mental health professional

Who should attend?
Anyone can attend! This training is for community members or professionals, including community volunteers, frontline staff, nonprofit workers, direct service staff, community health workers or other professionals.

On this Earth Day, Saturday, April 22 2023 we should make it clear to Mayor Frey and cronies that Little Earth, East Phillips and supporters say NO to the demolition of the Roof Depot and the Hiawatha Expansion project. Adding the prospect of arsenic poisoning and the toxic fumes of hundreds of heavy vehicles to one of the most polluted neighborhoods in MniSota is not addressing climate change.

The people of Little Earth and East Phillips are overwhelmingly working class and BIPOC, and do not accept that Frey’s corporate and political interests are more important than breathing clean air and drinking clean water. The massive cumulative impact of pollution sources already in East Phillips was brought about by concentrating pollution in East Phillips. Fighting climate change can only be brought about by fighting environmental racism.

New Staff Position: Lead Custodian

Shifts available:

Day Lead Custodian — Wednesday – Sunday, 6:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Night Lead Custodian — Thursday – Monday, 3:00 p.m.-11:30 p.m.

The Lead Custodian will provide direction and support for custodial workers. They will assist supervisors in training crew members. They will provide direction in the absence of the supervisors and assist the supervisors in finding and reporting projects that need to be completed.

Primary Responsibilities:

– Monitors the day shift sick call line and delegates work order assignments as needed.
– Meets with crew members at the start of the shift in order to answer questions, give out special assignments, and distribute work orders.
– Completes regular inspections of assigned areas.
– Provides custodial staff work direction throughout the shift as needed.
– Assists in the training of crew members in new procedures, chemicals, and equipment.
– Assists in the training and orientation of new crew members.
– Works on projects as assigned by supervisor.
– Fills in for absent workers.
– Performs light repair of custodial equipment.

Additional Responsibilities:

– Assist co-workers with supply and equipment needs and disburse the delivery to supply cage.
– Prepares reports on activities performed on weekends and when the supervisor is absent.
– Summer and school break apartment turn cleaning to include; window washing, carpet extraction, kivacing restrooms, and waxing floors.
– Biohazard cleanup.
– Assist with event cleanup.
– Snow shoveling for assigned entryway areas.
– Clean outside entryways, up to 15 feet from the door, and keep them free of debris, cigarette butts, etc.
– Tag equipment for major repairs and advise the manager or supervisor.
– All other duties as assigned by supervisor(s).

Work environment and physical demands:

– Frequent balancing, hearing, seeing, smelling, walking.
– Frequent standing, sitting, stooping, walking.
– Regular grasping, repetitive motions (twisting).
– Occasional balancing, climbing, kneeling, pulling, reaching, talking
– Occasional carrying up to 50 pounds and lifting up to 75 pounds.

Today from 11:50am-1:30pm, after Earth Month chapel, join us in exploring ways to address climate anxiety through connective practices. Gather together with other members of the Augsburg community to explore place-based practices for reconnecting with ourselves, each other, and the rest of the natural world. We will start with a brief introduction and then tour the Augsburg Urban Arboretum together, stopping along the way to experiment with practices for remembering and restoring connections to the larger communities of which we are a part, as well as with our own sense of grounding and vitality. A locally-sourced bag lunch from Laune Bread will be provided. Event limited to 15 participants.

*This event does involve walking/rolling around campus.
