Augsburg will be hosting an in-person event focused on applying to paid research opportunities in STEM that is open to students, staff, and faculty from Augsburg and the broader community.

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

Applications Are Now Open for the PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2024 (graduating by May ‘26)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)
Application deadline: Tuesday, November 28th at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Wednesday, December 6th (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).
Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Augsburg CGEE invites everyone to join award-winning Cuban journalist and filmmaker, Liz Oliva Fernández, for a screening and Q&A of two new Belly of the Beast documentaries!
Gracie Award-winning Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fernández will visit Augsburg University to present a new documentary film, Cuba in the Crosswinds [working title], produced by the independent media outlet, Belly of the Beast. Filmed this year in New Jersey and Washington D.C., Cuba in the Crosswinds exposes the economic and political interests driving U.S. policy toward Cuba under the Biden administration, which has mainly kept intact Trump’s “maximum pressure” sanctions on Cuba, fueling an unprecedented wave of migration from the island.

We have ran into multiple instances where the lot is full (and not due to our visit schedule) and our guests/prospective students can not find parking that is reserved for them, starting their visit to campus off on the wrong foot. The show runs for approximately 2 hours with an intermission.
Professor Shae Pemberton is a humble, secretive inventor who leads a quiet life focused on science. However, as her loyal assistant Matilda reminds her, fixing broken toys, clocks, and household gadgets is what she must do to pay the bills. When her friend Lawrence visits her with a business proposal from two shady fellows, buried secrets from her past resurface. As political unrest sweeps over the great city of New Providence, unexpected (and weird!) events start to unravel and threaten to destroy everything Pemberton holds dear, perhaps even the Crown itself! The Clockwork Professor is an action-packed adventure of fantastical science fiction with a steampunk twist.
Content Disclosure: The Clockwork Professor is a comedy intended for young adult and adult audiences. This play includes the use of some strong language and contains suggested nudity. There are also simulated fights, physical restraint, and a bit of romantic display of affection. Ah! And there will be some occasional theatrical smoke, too!
Boren Scholarship for Language Study Abroad

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages critical to U.S. interests by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program and writing/editing application essays.
Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

Chapel: All Saints Commemoration

Join us in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am for our All Saints service. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. In this service we remember loved ones who have died, especially in this past year. We celebrate and remember through song and prayer. November 8 was selected as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965. The HEA was passed to ensure that everyone has access to higher education, regardless of income. In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day, the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 6. These events are geared towards students but all are welcome to attend!

The workshop will be followed by a panel for students featuring student and alumni research experiences and a panel for faculty and staff on supporting equitable access and participation in research programs.

Rita Todacheene is a forensic photographer working for the Albuquerque police force. Her excellent photography skills have cracked many cases—she is almost supernaturally good at capturing details. In fact, Rita has been hiding a secret: she sees the ghosts of crime victims who point her toward the clues that other investigators overlook. Boren Scholarship for Language Study Abroad

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages critical to U.S. interests by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program and writing/editing application essays.
Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2024 (graduating by May ‘26)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Faculty reference deadline: Wednesday, December 6th (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Professor Shae Pemberton is a humble, secretive inventor who leads a quiet life focused on science. However, as her loyal assistant Matilda reminds her, fixing broken toys, clocks, and household gadgets is what she must do to pay the bills. When her friend Lawrence visits her with a business proposal from two shady fellows, buried secrets from her past resurface. As political unrest sweeps over the great city of New Providence, unexpected (and weird!) events start to unravel and threaten to destroy everything Pemberton holds dear, perhaps even the Crown itself! The Clockwork Professor is an action-packed adventure of fantastical science fiction with a steampunk twist.
Content Disclosure: The Clockwork Professor is a comedy intended for young adult and adult audiences. This play includes the use of some strong language and contains suggested nudity. There are also simulated fights, physical restraint, and a bit of romantic display of affection. Ah! And there will be some occasional theatrical smoke, too!
Research Participation and Compensation Opportunity

Hello Auggies! I am a student in the graduate department of clinical psychology and seeking students for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask about symptoms of depression or loneliness and how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home.
Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).
Participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

This course connects your research interests and your desire to work with BIPOC communities, organizations, and neighborhoods in Minneapolis/St. Paul. During the semester you do research into an area you are passionate about and we partner with a number of organizations and communities in community-based learning. This type of learning provides students with the opportunity to connect their gifts, skills, and interests with an organization, group, or issue. Your work informs our classroom discussions and course work while also giving back to the community in valuable and reciprocal ways.
Course meets T-Th 9:40-11:20 and fulfills an Augsburg Experience.

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2024 (graduating by May ‘26)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)
Application deadline: Tuesday, November 28th at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Wednesday, December 6th (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).
Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

The workshop will be followed by a panel for students featuring student and alumni research experiences and a panel for faculty and staff on supporting equitable access and participation in research programs.
All attendees are invited to stay for a community dinner following the workshop and panels.

Gracie Award-winning Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fernández will visit Augsburg University to present a new documentary film, Cuba in the Crosswinds [working title], produced by the independent media outlet, Belly of the Beast. Filmed this year in New Jersey and Washington D.C., Cuba in the Crosswinds exposes the economic and political interests driving U.S. policy toward Cuba under the Biden administration, which has mainly kept intact Trump’s “maximum pressure” sanctions on Cuba, fueling an unprecedented wave of migration from the island.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 7. There are no classes at Augsburg on Election Day and it’s a holiday for faculty and staff in order to make it easier for our community to vote, volunteer, and take part in the democratic process.

All Saints Commemoration TOMORROW

On Wednesday, November 1, we will hold an All Saints service at 10:40 am in Hoversten. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. In this service we remember loved ones who have died, especially in this past year. We celebrate and remember through song and prayer. Boren Scholarship for Language Study Abroad

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers throughout the government. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program and writing/editing application essays.
Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

Professor Shae Pemberton is a humble, secretive inventor who leads a quiet life focused on science. However, as her loyal assistant Matilda reminds her, fixing broken toys, clocks, and household gadgets is what she must do to pay the bills. When her friend Lawrence visits her with a business proposal from two shady fellows, buried secrets from her past resurface. As political unrest sweeps over the great city of New Providence, unexpected (and weird!) events start to unravel and threaten to destroy everything Pemberton holds dear, perhaps even the Crown itself! The Clockwork Professor is an action-packed adventure of fantastical science fiction with a steampunk twist.
Content Disclosure: The Clockwork Professor is a comedy intended for young adult and adult audiences. This play includes the use of some strong language and contains suggested nudity. There are also simulated fights, physical restraint, and a bit of romantic display of affection. Ah! And there will be some occasional theatrical smoke, too!

Augsburg Writing Center Tutor
Writing Center tutors will work with fellow Augsburg students, individually or in small groups, to
provide guidance and assistance in writing for courses in any discipline, at all stages of the writing process. Tutors may also work with students on extra-curricular writing such as applications, personal statements, and creative work. The purpose of our Writing Center work is to help students build their skills, their confidence, and their comfort level as writers and as students. As a part of this center, tutors will learn about writing in both practical and theoretical terms—as a way of thinking, a means of communicating with others, and a practice that varies across disciplines and across social and cultural conditions, also reaching into the practical aspects of one’s career. Additionally, as members of the Writer Center team, tutors are required to attend regular meetings for continuing education and discussions about Center business.
Responsibilities
– Assist, individually or (occasionally) in small groups, students who seek help with their writing for a minimum of 5 hours a week
– Attend biweekly mandatory meetings prepared, having read or written any assigned material
– Attend two Staff workshops per academic year
– Assist in ongoing tasks (e.g., greeting students, collating data, keeping the space clean and orderly) to ensure the Center runs smoothly and efficiently
– As time allows during shifts, assist with creating Writing Center materials, conducting relevant research, marketing materials, and helping with projects such as designing the center space, assessment, and building connections across the campus community.
– Present Writing Center orientations (in the Center or in classes) on occasion
– Adhere to Writing Center policies and enforce Center rules
– Refer students to other campus resources when appropriate
– Meet with the Center Director as part of ongoing tutor evaluation and complete self-evaluations
– Maintain payroll and Center data records thoroughly and on time
– May also have opportunities to participate in specialty student and faculty development workshops
– Commit to ongoing education to improve tutoring techniques and enhance culturally responsive teaching practices

Come learn about Leadership Studies by taking LS 205 Introduction to Leadership Studies.
Whether or not you have formal leadership experience, this course will benefit all students by bringing out your strengths and opening doors to new opportunities. If you already see yourself as a leader, you will get stronger. If you do not see yourself as a leader, by the end of the program, you will discover that you have all it takes to be a leader!
This course is the introduction to the minor in Leadership Studies and helps build communication skills and cultural competency skills. Check it out! All are welcome to sign up for the course–Monday and Wednesday night 3:10-4:50.

Need an Augsburg Experience and want to work in the community? AIS 304 Engaging Community is the course for you.
This course connects your research interests and your desire to work with BIPOC communities, organizations, and neighborhoods in Minneapolis/St. Paul. During the semester you do research into an area you are passionate about and we partner with a number of organizations and communities in community-based learning. This type of learning provides students with the opportunity to connect their gifts, skills, and interests with an organization, group, or issue. Your work informs our classroom discussions and course work while also giving back to the community in valuable and reciprocal ways.
Course meets T-Th 9:40-11:20 and fulfills an Augsburg Experience.
Applications Are Now Open for the PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2024 (graduating by May ‘26)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)
Application deadline: Tuesday, November 28th at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Wednesday, December 6th (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).
Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Augsburg will be hosting an in-person event focused on applying to paid research opportunities in STEM that is open to students, staff, and faculty from Augsburg and the broader community.

Dixie Shafer of URGO and Lara Crombie of the TRIO McNair Scholars program will lead the workshop for students, staff, and faculty on identifying and applying for summer research opportunities such as National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs).
The workshop will be followed by a panel for students featuring student and alumni research experiences and a panel for faculty and staff on supporting equitable access and participation in research programs.
All attendees are invited to stay for a community dinner following the workshop and panels.

Indigenous Book Club – November 14

For Native American Heritage Month, American Indian Student Services is sponsoring an Indigenous Book club where we will read Shutter by Ramona Emerson. Rita Todacheene is a forensic photographer working for the Albuquerque police force. Her excellent photography skills have cracked many cases—she is almost supernaturally good at capturing details. In fact, Rita has been hiding a secret: she sees the ghosts of crime victims who point her toward the clues that other investigators overlook. We will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 14th from 5:30pm-7pm to discuss the book and have dinner. RSVP is limited to 20 people. Students, staff, and faculty are welcome to participate. Augsburg CGEE invites everyone to join award-winning Cuban journalist and filmmaker, Liz Oliva Fernández, for a screening and Q&A of two new Belly of the Beast documentaries!
Gracie Award-winning Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fernández will visit Augsburg University to present a new documentary film, Cuba in the Crosswinds [working title], produced by the independent media outlet, Belly of the Beast. Filmed this year in New Jersey and Washington D.C., Cuba in the Crosswinds exposes the economic and political interests driving U.S. policy toward Cuba under the Biden administration, which has mainly kept intact Trump’s “maximum pressure” sanctions on Cuba, fueling an unprecedented wave of migration from the island.
