I like to think about the afterlife as two different worlds – one inhabited by people who are no longer living but continue to be remembered by friends and relatives, and the other inhabited by those who have been forgotten. The world of those who are remembered is filled with joy and celebration, whereas the world of the forgotten is filled with darkness and despair. And I ask myself, ‘Which of these worlds would I want for my loved ones?’ Day of the Dead is a way for me to actively allow the memories of loved ones to continue to guide and influence my life. As my children help create altars each year, they learn about loved ones they never had the opportunity to meet. Community altars, such as this one, provide an opportunity for us all to connect with the rich historical and cultural roots of our ancestors.”

Join a family friendly bike ride exploring the West Bank’s hidden routes and bike paths to the University of Minnesota, Stone Arch Bridge, Nicollet Island, and back to the West Bank. The West Bank Ride begins at the intersection of 6th St S and the bike path on the east side of Riverside Mall (620 16th Av S) at 3 PM on Saturday, October 14. First stop will be the Cedar Cultural Center Plaza (at 3:15 PM) for music by King Baron, a lively quartet playing New Orleans street music. The ride ends at the House of Balls (1504 7th St S) for more music, a party, and the Our Streets Mobile History Museum. The East Phillips Neighborhood Institute (EPNI) formed around the multifaceted vision of an indoor urban farm and housing project to promote the personal, social, environmental, and economic health of our neighborhood.
In May 2023, after a 10-year fight for environmental justice in Minneapolis’ East Phillips neighborhood, the community won the chance to convert a contested industrial warehouse into a cooperatively-owned community hub with an indoor farm and housing, against steep odds.
Come learn what EPNI has been up to for the last six months! There will be a panel of speakers and tables from the health, fundraising, legal, financial, and community outreach committees.

We will have our second meeting coming up on Wednesday Oct, 18th from 5:00pm to 6:00pm at the East Commons(in Christensen Center). During this meeting, we will be announcing the mentor and mentee pairs and students will have the opportunity to talk to their mentor and mentee. We will go over some of the expectations for mentor and mentee as well. We will also be getting to know each other by doing arts and crafts. There will be FOOD and Beverages.

The benefits of meditative practices have been intuited for millennia, but now science has clearly observed the connection between mental wellness and curious self-awareness. The practice of mindfulness is now mainstream, and we’re beginning to ask deeper questions about what it really is, and about what it might be able to show us: What is the relationship between our mental health and our spirituality? What do words like compassion and wisdom mean for me in this age of anxiety? How are qualities like resiliency, courage, clarity, and kindness made available to us? Augsburg students, faculty, and staff are invited to the 2023 Batalden Convocation in Applied Ethics. Join us on October 25, 2023, from 10–11 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel or via Zoom for this free public event on interfaith responses to trauma.
Globally, over 50% of persons experience some sort of trauma during their lifetime. At this year’s Batalden Convocation event, three panelists will share resources from their specific religious traditions (Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam) that respond to trauma and foster resilience. The faculty panelists include Assistant Professor Iva Patel, Assistant Professor Shayna Sheinfeld, and Professor Najeeba Syeed, El-Hibri Endowed Chair.
The Batalden Faculty Scholar Program in Applied Ethics strengthens the infusion of ethics and values into our campus community, so that the skills of ethical reasoning and critical reflection are hallmarks of Augsburg’s students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

Join us Thursday, October 12th for the opening reception of Aabijijiwan Ukeyat yanalleh. Aabijijiwan Ukeyat yanalleh is a collaborative exhibition from artists Karen Goulet (Ojibwe) and Monique Verdin (Houma). Karen and Monique are sisters of the same river, connected by the planetary lifeforce known as the Misi-ziibi (Big River, Ojibwe) near the headwaters in the north and remembered as Misha sipokni (Older than Time, Chata) in the coastal territories of the southern Delta, where the bayous of Turtle Island meet the sea.
6-8 pm; All My Relations Arts; Food and drink will be provided.

Dr. Sergio Madrid is an Augsburg faculty member in the education department and currently serves as the assistant director of the THRIVE Program. His topic is “I shouldn’t be here, and yet here I am tracking a calling.” In this heartfelt conversation, we will explore the path of discovering and pursuing a calling, inspired by a desire to serve and a belief in the goodness of humanity. We will discuss the ups and downs of this journey with empathy and honesty. Moreover, we will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each step and guide individuals toward resources within the community that can facilitate profound realizations. His topic is “I shouldn’t be here, and yet here I am tracking a calling.” In this heartfelt conversation, we will explore the path of discovering and pursuing a calling, inspired by a desire to serve and a belief in the goodness of humanity. We will discuss the ups and downs of this journey with empathy and honesty. Moreover, we will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each step and guide individuals toward resources within the community that can facilitate profound realizations. Augsburg students, faculty, and staff are invited to the 2023 Batalden Convocation in Applied Ethics. Join us on October 25, 2023, from 10–11 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel or via Zoom for this free public event on interfaith responses to trauma.
Globally, over 50% of persons experience some sort of trauma during their lifetime. At this year’s Batalden Convocation event, three panelists will share resources from their specific religious traditions (Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam) that respond to trauma and foster resilience. The faculty panelists include Assistant Professor Iva Patel, Assistant Professor Shayna Sheinfeld, and Professor Najeeba Syeed, El-Hibri Endowed Chair.
The Batalden Faculty Scholar Program in Applied Ethics strengthens the infusion of ethics and values into our campus community, so that the skills of ethical reasoning and critical reflection are hallmarks of Augsburg’s students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

The Stem Peer Mentorship Program
We will have our second meeting coming up on Wednesday Oct, 18th from 5:00pm to 6:00pm at the East Commons(in Christensen Center). During this meeting, we will be announcing the mentor and mentee pairs and students will have the opportunity to talk to their mentor and mentee. We will go over some of the expectations for mentor and mentee as well. We will also be getting to know each other by doing arts and crafts. There will be FOOD and Beverages.

The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. CLASS and Lindell Library invite you to a book discussion for “Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the 21st Century” edited by Alice Wong. “This anthology gives a glimpse into the rich complexity of the disabled experience, highlighting the passions, talents, and everyday lives of this community.”
We’ll discuss narratives from Part 2: “Becoming” on Thursday, October 5, 2023, 4:00-5:00 pm in Lindell Library, Room 301. We welcome you (students, faculty, and staff) to this discussion regardless of how much of the book you read! Snacks will be provided. Greenhouse First Thursday – 10/05

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.
The next First Thursday is this week, October 5, noon—3pm. The greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

Due to multiple vacancies in University Events staff positions, we need to pause on booking events that require event planning assistance. The University Events office can still book campus meeting rooms, coordinate basic room set up, and book audio/visual support, but larger, more involved events cannot be fully supported by the department for the foreseeable future.
We have updated the University Events website to reflect this change. (See link below.) Please note: If you have bookmarked any links to the former event request pages or forms, please do not continue to use those links. Submissions to prior forms are not being monitored.

Save the Date: Batalden Convocation in Applied Ethics (October 25)

Augsburg students, faculty, and staff are invited to the 2023 Batalden Convocation in Applied Ethics. Join us on October 25, 2023, from 10–11 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel or via Zoom for this free public event on interfaith responses to trauma.
Globally, over 50% of persons experience some sort of trauma during their lifetime. At this year’s Batalden Convocation event, three panelists will share resources from their specific religious traditions (Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam) that respond to trauma and foster resilience. The faculty panelists include Assistant Professor Iva Patel, Assistant Professor Shayna Sheinfeld, and Professor Najeeba Syeed, El-Hibri Endowed Chair.
The Batalden Faculty Scholar Program in Applied Ethics strengthens the infusion of ethics and values into our campus community, so that the skills of ethical reasoning and critical reflection are hallmarks of Augsburg’s students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

Gilman Scholarship Applications – Due October 5

The Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad applications are due October 5. This application cycle is for programs that start between December 1, 2023, and October 31, 2024 (Terms Accommodated: Spring 2024, Summer 2024, Fall 2024, and Academic Year 2024-2025)
Plan ahead to give yourself time to submit a solid application.
To be eligible for the Gilman a student must be a U.S. Citizen or National and receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or during the term of the study abroad program or internship

We will offer a blessing of the animals in chapel at 10:40 am on Friday, October 6 in Hoversten Chapel. You are invited to bring your pet or emotional support or service animal to chapel for a blessing or send a photo to Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu by October 4 to have your pet featured in a chapel slideshow. World Animal Day is celebrated each year on October 4. On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated. The date was originally chosen because it is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment.
