Prof. Wanyama and Student Speaking at Hennipin County Commissioner Candidate Forum Thursday

submitted by svanoe@augsburg.edu

Hennepin County District 4 Candidate Forum
Thursday, May 3, 6:30-8:30 PM
University Lutheran Church of Hope 601 13th Ave. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414

ISAIAH, a state-wide organization of congregations, clergy and people of faith working for racial and economic justice in MN, is organizing this
Hennepin County Commissioner Candidates’ Forum to bring the debate on protecting immigrant families in Hennepin County to the forefront of this November’s election. Despite their low profile, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners oversees Hennepin County’s $2 billion annual budget and there are multiple seats up for election! Especially given the discouraging state of federal immigration policy, there’s a lot that can and must be done at the county level to protect immigrant families in our community from deportation. Come learn about what these candidates are willing to do to help make our county a safe place for all and ensure that this important issue receives the attention it deserves.

Speakers will include our very own Professor Mzenga Wanyama (currently facing the threat of deportation) and an Augsburg student, speaking from their own experience. Come show your support and get informed about this important part of this November’s elections!

Candidates Angela Conley, Megan Kuhl-Stennes and Peter McLaughlin have confirmed their participation

You can register for the District 4 Forum here: https://tinyurl.com/hennepind4

Relational Skills for Bridging Divides workshop May 7 – register today

submitted by eschenba@augsburg.edu

May 7, 2018
1:30-3:30 p.m.
Marshall Room, Christensen Center, Augsburg University

In this climate of political polarization, people with differing perspectives and opinions struggle to engage in productive conversation. We tend to be quick to defend or demonize, deepening the divide that exists in the American people. Even when we want to reach out to those with different perspectives, we often don’t know how.

This workshop offers a sampling of two different strategies to engage more productively. The first hour will be devoted to learning some of the skills developed by Better Angels for listening and speaking in difficult conversations. In the second hour we’ll put those skills into practice with a deliberative dialogue on How to Prevent Mass Shootings in the United States.

As participants in this workshop you will be the first to be invited to a full-day seminar on these themes and practices which will be offered on November 3, 2018.

Please join us on May 7. Register by Friday, May 4.

We are fully aware that the timing of his visit is not ideal. If you have an interest in attending or ideas of how to ensure an audience, please contact Bettine Hoff Hermanson at hermansb@augsburg.edu

Conference Opportunity for Students on Faith, Science, and Youth Ministry

submitted by warnbers@augsburg.edu

Did Jesus Ride a Dinosaur?

It sounds like a silly question, but it gets at the heart of a problem that-according to Pew Research-leads a significant number of youth to abandon their faith: the perceived conflict between faith and science.

Yet, faith and science don’t have to be at odds. There are faithful, fruitful, and intellectually rigorous ways of putting the two in conversation-something that might just be a lifeline for youth.

So bring your curiosity and questions to Jesus Rode a Dinosaur: Faithful Youth Ministry in a Scientific Age, a conference on May 7-8. Speakers include: Krista Tippett, Mike Mchargue, Kendra Dean, Mark DeVries, Rozella Haydée White, Paul Douglas and Andrew Root.

Dr. Vicki Grassian presents:
What is in the air we breathe? The atmosphere is composed of gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Other gases are present at much lower concentrations and include ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and formaldehyde just to name a few. Besides these gases, there is something else in the air we breathe, tiny microscopic particles called aerosols. Not just the aerosol that comes from spray cans that you are all probably familiar with but this talk will focus on any liquid or solid particles that is suspended in the air, which is the definition of an aerosol. These tiny particles come from many sources and can impact the Earth’s climate and human health in ways we are just starting to understand.

Campus Gathering in Memory of Pastor Dave Wold

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

We learned today that Campus Pastor Emeritus Dave Wold passed away last night. Pastor Dave touched the lives of thousands of Auggies in his decades of service at Augsburg. President Pribbenow will be sharing an email message with all faculty and staff today, and Pastor Sonja Hagander will reach out to the family to offer support.

This morning, the community is invited to gather in Hoversten Chapel following our daily chapel service (10:55 a.m.), for a brief time of remembrance, prayer, and song.

Information about memorial services will be shared on A-mail once we know the family’s plan. Our sympathies go out to Cathy Wold and Dave’s family, as well as all the Auggies — on campus and around the world — whose lives were touched by Pastor Dave.

Tuesday (4/17) and Wednesday (4/18), 12:30-1:30pm, Cedar Room

Reginaldo Haslett-Marroquin will join us on Wednesday to think about the potential for regenerative agriculture in our current and future garden spaces.

Free Tickets to 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Forum for Augsburg Students

submitted by mangana@augsburg.edu

Our 30th Annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum will take place at Augsburg University on September 13-15, 2018.
Tickets are FREE for our Augsburg community including students, faculty and staff, and we encourage ticket reservations before the end of this spring semester.
Please visit our website for more information regarding the upcoming event at peace.augsburg.edu. Registration can also be placed via tickets.augsburg.edu.

We aim to repeat a successful event come September and hope you will join Augsburg University in honoring the work of President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia (2016 laureate) and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) (2017 laureate).

This year’s theme The Paradox of Peace will include plenaries, keynotes and breakout sessions related to tensions between conflict and reconciliation, between justice and forgiveness, between hope and fear, and will highlight the laureates’ successful accomplishments navigating these paradoxes.

Schedule as follows:
September 13: Community Action Workshops/Dialogues
September 14: Honoring the work of President Santos — all classes will take place at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum
September 15: Honoring the work of ICAN

In the coming weeks, our interns are scheduled to visit classrooms to share updates about the Forum and assist with any questions regarding the ticketing process. We invite faculty members who are interested in such a visit, to contact Camila Payan at payanrm@augsburg.edu, to reserve a time and date. In addition, Frankie Shackelford, Professor Emerita of Norwegian (shack@augsburg.edu), is available to assist with finding connections between the Forum content and courses scheduled for fall semester.

Questions regarding ticketing should be directed to Jami Kadolph at kadolph@augsburg.edu
