June 2-5, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) will offer the second of two institutes focused on Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts. This Institute is intended to address major issues that drive unrest on today’s campus, including protests directed at public policy, social inequity, bias, and identity that sometimes become disruptive or even violent. The Provost’s Office is hoping to send a team from Augsburg and has been working with a few faculty and staff on the application. Applications must include a proposal that outlines how we intend to use the experience, if we are selected to participate, on our campus. While we can only send four people, we want the proposal to reflect the broader interests and commitments of the community. The Provost invites members of the community to join her for a conversation on how this institute might be used to advance our commitments to inclusion, equity, and cultural competence at Augsburg.

A meeting is scheduled for TODAY, Nov. 8, from 12:00-1:00 pm in LIN 301. All are welcome — please feel free to bring your lunch! If Augsburg is accepted to participate in the Institute, additional open meetings will be held throughout the Spring, as we want the team’s work to help advance our collective goals.

Environmental Stewardship Committee (ESC) is a body committed to helping the University reach its goals. Its mission is to assist the governance structure of the University including: the President, all officers, staff, faculty and students in implementing best practices regarding environmental stewardship in both campus operations and curricular development.

Seminary & Divinity School Day is a great opportunity to explore the variety of options.

Join us for Seminary and Divinity School Day on Thursday, November 15. A group of Auggies will travel to St. Olaf College on November 15th. There we will gather with students from other area colleges to meet with representatives from at least 7 Seminary and Divinity Schools around the country for this special day of vocational reflection and conversation!

This event is free and includes lunch. Transportation to St. Olaf College will be provided to those who pre-register through the Christensen Center for Vocation. We will leave Augsburg at 8:30 am and return around 2:30 pm.

The Midco Scholars Program is a partnership between Midcontinent Communications (Midco) and Augsburg University which provides opportunities for underrepresented students to explore a career in business/IT and gain relevant work experience. This semester, up to 4 students will be selected to become Midco Scholars. Each Scholar will take part in monthly professional development workshops, receive a $2,500 scholarship, and will also have the opportunity to apply for a competitive full-time Summer 2019 internship with Midco, either in their Sioux Falls, SD or Edina, MN offices. (Internships will more likely take place in Sioux Falls, so applicants should be available to live in Sioux Falls for the summer – housing is available).

Ideal candidates for the Midco Scholars Program will:
-Be a Junior in good standing at Augsburg (anticipated graduation in Dec 2019 or May 2020)
-Have a major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Data Analytics or other business related fields
-Be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of a summer internship and provide documents to verify work authorization

Underrepresented students, including students of color, low-income (Pell Grant eligible/Dream Grant eligible), and/or first generation college students are highly encouraged to apply.

In the next few days, all staff and full-time faculty will be receiving an email inviting participation in a market survey being administered to community residents and people who work in the I-94/Riverside Corridor. This market research is being undertaken by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Augsburg University, the YMCA, Pillsbury United Communities, and Fairview Health Services to explore the potential for creating a shared recreation and wellness facility on the east end of the Augsburg campus. The survey is being administered by ANA Research, an independent research firm located in the Twin Cities. All responses will be confidential. Please take the time to participate in this survey. It should take about 10 minutes to complete. Minnesota holds its midterm elections on Tues., Nov. 6. Information about how to register, where to vote, sample ballot – and more, is available from the Minnesota Secretary of State website, https://www.sos.state.mn.us/

Early voting ended Nov. 5.

Students living on campus can vote in the precinct for Augsburg and register online or on Election Day. Augsburg will provide the City of Minneapolis Board of Election with a list of resident students.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities.

We’re looking for debate judges and hospitality volunteers for its upcoming high school debate tournaments.

No debate experience? No problem. We train volunteers at every tournament.

What Judges Do:

● Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
● Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
● Choose the winner of each debate!

Opportunities to Volunteer:

● November 9th & 10th: Tamar Kaplan (Highland Park HS, St. Paul)
● November 17th: UMBrooks (U of M, West Bank)
● December 7th & 8th: UDL Championship (WTMS, St. Paul)

We have open evening shifts on Fridays and open morning or afternoon shifts on Saturdays.

Midco Scholars Application

We’re proud to be one of 140+ institutions recognized by Second Nature for our carbon neutrality commitment and pledge that We Are Still In on climate change, even while our federal administration has pulled support for the Paris Climate Agreement.

Augsburg became a charter signatory to the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (now Second Nature Climate Commitment) in 2007. In signing this agreement, President Pribbenow affirmed our long- standing commitment to sustainability that has been fueled by the hard work, determination, and commitment of this community, primarily through the leadership of the Environmental Stewardship Committee (ESC) and our
students. With 100% of our electricity now coming from solar farms, we are making progress on our carbon neutrality commitment, but we still have a ways to go.

Thanks for doing your part in saving energy, reducing travel, and helping keep Augsburg accountable for taking bold steps towards structural, behavioral, and policy changes that mitigate climate change and work towards a world where all can thrive!

The Midco Scholars Program is a partnership between Midcontinent Communications (Midco) and Augsburg University which provides opportunities for underrepresented students to explore a career in business/IT and gain relevant work experience. This semester, up to 4 students will be selected to become Midco Scholars. Each Scholar will take part in monthly professional development workshops, receive a $2,500 scholarship, and will also have the opportunity to apply for a competitive full-time Summer 2019 internship with Midco, either in their Sioux Falls, SD or Edina, MN offices. (Internships will more likely take place in Sioux Falls, so applicants should be available to live in Sioux Falls for the summer – housing is available).

Ideal candidates for the Midco Scholars Program will:
-Be a Junior in good standing at Augsburg (anticipated graduation in Dec 2019 or May 2020)
-Have a major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Data Analytics or other business related fields
-Be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of a summer internship and provide documents to verify work authorization

Underrepresented students, including students of color, low-income (Pell Grant eligible/Dream Grant eligible), and/or first generation college students are highly encouraged to apply.

These workshops provide information on the authorizations for international students so you can better support and connect to opportunities for the students you advise.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
F-1 students may be authorized and documented in SEVIS to work or internship experiences off campus once they have been in F-1 Status for one year and studied full time. Before participating in any kind of off-campus employment, students must consult an international student advisor. Curricular Practical Training or CPT, is a temporary employment or training with in their major field of study and integral to the curriculum.

Dear Friends,

We are grieving. This past week, we witnessed heartbreaking and tragic acts of violence and bigotry, driven by hatred and fear, against Jewish and African American members of our community. We saw blatant efforts to harm and intimidate those with opposing political views. We witnessed, as well, attempts to deny the identities of those who are transgender or gender fluid. During yesterday’s interfaith vigil in the chapel, we stood together in witness to the fear, pain, and devastation rippling through our community and especially through the lives of our Jewish friends and neighbors. This fear is known first hand by far too many in our community–people who do not feel safe, valued for who they are, or seen. We must–and do–stand against the forces of hate and violence.

At this time in our nation’s history, every single voice is needed to send the unmistakably clear message that we reject violent and discriminatory acts and the hate that fuels them. Words matter; silence only gives license to the bigotry.

Actions matter, too. So I join Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, presiding bishop of the ELCA (link below), in inviting each of you to reach out to our Jewish friends, family members, colleagues and students, to share our words of care, support, love, and protection. To all those who fear and grieve this day: We see you, we stand with you, and we will not relent in this fight against hatred nor in our commitment to building a world where all are safe and welcome.

On Saturday, October 27, a gunman killed several people and wounded others in an anti-Semitic attack during a Sabbath service at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. Approximately 10-15 new students will be arriving to Minneapolis in early January for Orientation. You will meet students at 4:30pm in the Oyate Commons (Christensen Center Suite 2) on Friday January 11th. We are asking for you to host 3-4 students and drive them to your home for a meal. We ask that you bring them back by around 7:30 pm. It helps to be hosting with someone, whether that is your partner, family or you can pair with another faculty or staff on campus.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
F-1 students may be authorized and documented in SEVIS to work or internship experiences off campus once they have been in F-1 Status for one year and studied full time. Before participating in any kind of off-campus employment, students must consult an international student advisor. Curricular Practical Training or CPT, is a temporary employment or training with in their major field of study and integral to the curriculum.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities.
We’re looking for debate judges and hospitality volunteers for its upcoming high school debate tournaments.

No debate experience? No problem. We train volunteers at every tournament.

What Hospitality Volunteers Do:

● Greet & guide kids, coaches, and judges as they arrive at tournaments
● Answer questions and assist with wayfinding at tournament sites
● Distribute goody bags to students and thank-you gifts to our judges

What Judges Do:

● Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
● Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
● Choose the winner of each debate!

What do words like “founding” mean at a place like Augsburg? If, as a Lutheran institution, we believe in the concept of “semper reformanda” (always reforming), then shouldn’t we say that Augsburg has had multiple “foundings”—not only physically, but intellectually and theologically?

Augsburg history professor Phil Adamo will explore these questions in the 2018 Heritage Day Talk, offering examples from his new book, Hold Fast to What is Good: A History of Augsburg University in 10 Objects, written for the upcoming celebration of Augsburg’s 150th anniversary.

This event is free and includes lunch. Transportation to St. Olaf College will be provided to those who pre-register through the Christensen Center for Vocation. We will leave Augsburg at 8:30 am and return around 2:30 pm.

There are several unscrupulous businesses out there who attempt to sell you outrageously priced toner over the phone. We have already gotten a call from someone (mis)representing themselves as our printer vendor – Marco, and referencing our fleet of Sharp copiers.

They may start with asking you what is the model or ID# of the copier near your desk. They may say they have extra stock of the toner you need or the price is due to increase. They may offer to ship you a toner on trial. Regardless of what they say, DO NOT give them any information. All you need to know is that you get toner for your copier or printer by either calling the Copy Center at extension x1054 or emailing at copyctr@augsburg.edu.

You will NEVER need to purchase toner for machines in your area.

A quick way to ditch these “toner phoners” is to tell them you would like to transfer them to the person in the organization who purchases toner – they will hang up before you can transfer them!

On October 17th, Joshua joined the Augsburg Human Resources team as an HR Generalist. Prior to joining Augsburg, Joshua received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and served in the U.S. Army as an HR Specialist.
