Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 80 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on April 15. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) by March 5th (a mentor-approved abstract is required to register).

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2019 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2020 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2020. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2020.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

Applications are now open for the 2018-2019 Augsburg Senior Leadership Society, which recognizes graduating seniors for their leadership contributions over the course of their tenure at Augsburg University. One individual who is inducted into the society will receive the Linda Schrempp Alberg Endowed Leadership Award, which has an award value of $500. Students will also be nominated for the Marina Christensen Justice Award, given out at Commencement. Prepare + Prosper’s free tax clinics opened on Saturday, January 26 and will run through April 15.

Visit http://prepareandprosper.org/free-tax-preparation/ to learn more, and make an appointment.

More than 550 volunteers will serve nearly 13,000 people with free tax preparation and financial services at nine locations in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Hopkins. Volunteers went through up to 20 hours of comprehensive education on the tax codes and new federal tax laws.

Underrepresented students in STEM can now apply for summer research under the NSF-funded MnDRIVE program.

To be eligible for the MnDRIVE program, students must:

-be a United States citizen or permanent resident
-be enrolled in an undergraduate STEM degree program
-self-identify as a minority or underrepresented group (Black, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific
Islander, Alaska Native)
-complete and submit all application materials by the deadline.

The MnDRIVE program represents a partnership between the Minnesota Discovery and Research Innovation Economy (MnDRIVE) initiative and the North Star STEM Alliance (NSSA) to provide summer research internship experiences to undergraduates. MnDRIVE has summer internship opportunities in four general research areas: Robotics, Global Food, Environment and Brain Conditions. Students should be available for research during Summer 2019 and have access to housing in the Twin Cities metro area. The NSSA provides $4,500 for the research opportunity.

The MnDRIVE application deadline is Monday, February 25th, 2019. Faculty reference letters are due Monday, March 4th.

If you want to talk to someone confidentially about a variety of topics (depression, anxiety, grief, relationships, etc.) please call the CWC office located on the first floor of the Anderson Res Hall at 612-330-1707 to schedule an appointment or stop in the office between 8 – 4:00 pm. An after hours emergency service is available by calling 612-330-1707 and pressing option 1 to be connected to a counselor by phone when the CWC office is closed. Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.

In these programs you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Current students with sophomore or junior status who plan to study on campus all of the 2019-20 academic year are eligible to apply.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, needs a few excellent folks to judge East African Debate Initiative. In this program, middle and high school students in the Twin Cities compete, learn, and discuss issues facing the East African community.

No debate experience? No problem. We train judges at the beginning of every tournament.
What Judges Do:
Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
Choose the winner of each debate!
Opportunities to Volunteer:
Volunteers will judge two rounds of debate from 3:30 PM – 7:30 PM.

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2019 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2020 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2020. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2020.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

In these programs you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Current students with sophomore or junior status who plan to study on campus all of the 2019-20 academic year are eligible to apply.

We are very pleased to announce that Gwen Walz has joined the Augsburg community as an independent contractor, serving in two roles: as Special Assistant to the President for Strategic Partnerships and as a Fellow in the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship.

Mrs. Walz is a long-time friend of Augsburg. Her husband, Governor Tim Walz, and she first partnered with us when Governor Walz served as the US House member from the district including our Rochester campus. We specifically focused on issues of diversity and equity in the Rochester area. We also joined with Mrs. Walz in promoting a program to offer college courses in Minnesota prisons.

Mrs. Walz, a Gustavus Adolphus College graduate and a veteran high school teacher and administrator, will work on several special projects for Augsburg, including government relations and promoting public service careers for students.

Prepare + Prosper’s free tax clinics opened on Saturday, January 26 and will run through April 15.

More than 550 volunteers will serve nearly 13,000 people with free tax preparation and financial services at nine locations in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Hopkins. Volunteers went through up to 20 hours of comprehensive education on the tax codes and new federal tax laws.

The Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC) is forming a new group focused on teaching and practicing skills for emotional wellbeing.

These will include:
Understanding and working with emotions (emotion regulation skills)
Mindfulness skills
Distress tolerance coping skills
Interpersonal effectiveness/assertiveness skills

The group will meet Wednesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 in the CWC office, starting on the February 13th.

Major findings from the dumpsters behind Oren Gateway Center: 11% of waste (by weight) in the organics dumpster should have been in the trash, and 33% of the recycling dumpster should have been in organics. Waste sorting is confusing. We’re here to help!

We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2020.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

Prepare + Prosper’s free tax clinics opened on Saturday, January 26 and will run through April 15.

More than 550 volunteers will serve nearly 13,000 people with free tax preparation and financial services at nine locations in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Hopkins. Volunteers went through up to 20 hours of comprehensive education on the tax codes and new federal tax laws.

Augsburg’s Interfaith Scholars, a group of students who are interested in exploring the religious diversity of the Augsburg student body, the wider Twin Cities community, and the United States through interreligious dialogue and action, are organizing a campus wide art project focused on the question: “What brings you light?” This is an ambiguous prompt, as our goal is to engage with folks from many different religious, spiritual, and secular backgrounds and to showcase what is the “light” in our lives despite our different beliefs.

We ask the members of the Augsburg community to reflect on what brings them light, and to photograph if they are able. Perhaps it is a beloved pet, a significant other, a spice rack because you love cooking, a pocket bible, a special place you spend time in, etc. If it is not something you’re able to photograph, a selfie would be a great submission! Please send appropriate content, as these photos will be displayed on campus.

We are also asking for an audio clip with your photo submission. You can talk about what your light is or answer one of the following questions the Interfaith Scholars has compiled. Please send your photo submission to interfaith@augsburg.edu. You may submit a text description or an audio recording between 30 seconds and 90 seconds long answering any of these questions:
What brings you light?
What brings you meaning?
What brings you joy?

Please feel free to interpret the question in whatever way resonates with you. Be creative, be spontaneous, and be intentional. Please let us know if you have any questions on this art project or are unsure on how to complete the submission.

As we move forward in our Love Local Water initiative, you’ll notice that Aquafina bottled water has now been replaced with Bubly (flavored sparkling water) or Lifewater (“enhanced” vitamin water) in vending machines on the Minneapolis campus. One more step closer to honoring our readily available, clean, local tap water! We recognize this is a complex process, with lots of questions and grey area. You may be wondering:

Q: Is all the water coming out of our drinking fountains and sinks actually safe to drink?
A: The places that students have tested on campus so far meet federal standards for key pollutants. Minneapolis tap water consistently meets standards. What are those standards anyways? Who determines them? What if what feels “safe” to me is different than the standards?

Q: Aren’t these new options just bottled water with a marketing twist?
A: Perhaps. What do you think? What about people who might not drink plain water but could stay hydrated by drinking these?

Q: Aren’t we encouraging more sugary beverage consumption by removing plain water as an option?
A: We don’t know yet what people’s purchasing habits will be, but we have data on which beverages were previously purchased. Do you know someone who needs a water bottle so they can get free water at the drinking fountains? Send them to the Campus Cupboard to pick one up!

Q: Why are we even doing this? Why does it matter?

Did you know Augsburg is a Beez Kneez Urban Apiary Partner? We host honeybee hives on campus that are cared for by our neighbors, The Beez Kneez, over in Seward. Here’s the latest report we received about our bees:

“We experienced higher than usual colony loss last winter forcing us to replace many hives in the spring of 2018. There were several compounding factors that are to blame including a long, harsh and persistent winter (remember that foot of snow and super cold temps in mid-April), a new virus which set many of the new colonies back and weird weather in the middle of the summer. The bees seemed to use all the spring and early summer nectar to heal themselves from the virus and then when the summer flowers were supposed to provide, we experienced cold and rainy weather in the first week of July. A perfect storm of problems. I talked to many beekeepers in the state that experienced similar problems.

Your hives were alive and ready for winter in early November. Bees can endure this cold but temperature swings can be hard on them and that really warm weather we had in January can cause them to eat more than they should. We will be checking on them and their food stores as soon as it gets above freezing again. Hopefully, spring comes a little early this year. It is an el nino year which is more mild than usual. I am hopeful. We will give you an update on their status.”

The Multicultural Student Services Scholarships (including ASIA Scholarship, Bonnie Wallace American Indian Scholarship, HOLA Scholarship and M. The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, needs a few excellent folks to judge middle school debates this spring.

No experience? No problem. We train judges at the beginning of every tournament.
What Judges Do:
• Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
• Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
• Choose the winner of each debate!

Opportunities to Volunteer:

Volunteers will judge two rounds of debate from 3:30 PM – 7:30 PM.

Greetings from Campus Ministry (CM) and the Christensen Center for Vocation (CCV)!

We are writing to inform you of a wonderful service opportunity coming up!

During Spring Break this year, March 16th – 23rd, we will be traveling to Birmingham, Alabama with Habitat for Humanity for Alternative Spring Break. We’ll visit the Civil Rights Institute and learn from African-American activism both past and present. This trip is a great chance for students to travel during spring break while also making a positive difference with community. The cost is $250 and includes lodging, transportation, and most meals. A $100 deposit is due at registration to secure your spot. Registration is open now until February 4th.

Using Parker Palmer’s book, Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation, seminar participants will explore how they can use their gifts and talents in service to others, learn about the history of vocation at Augsburg, and hear from others who will share their vocational journeys. Our co-sponsors, The Christensen Center for Vocation, The Center for Teaching and Learning and Human Resources are delighted to be able to cover the cost of lunch and the book for this series.

As we move forward in our Love Local Water initiative, you’ll notice that Aquafina bottled water has now been replaced with Bubly (flavored sparkling water) or Lifewater (“enhanced” vitamin water) in vending machines. One more step closer to honoring our readily available, clean, local tap water! We recognize this is a complex process, with lots of questions and grey area. You may be wondering:

Q: Is all the water coming out of our drinking fountains and sinks actually safe to drink?
A: The places that students have tested on campus so far meet federal standards for key pollutants. Minneapolis tap water consistently meets standards. What are those standards anyways? Who determines them? What if what feels “safe” to me is different than the standards?

Q: Aren’t these new options just bottled water with a marketing twist?
A: Perhaps. What do you think? What about people who might not drink plain water but could stay hydrated by drinking these?

Q: Aren’t we encouraging more sugary beverage consumption by removing plain water as an option?
A: We don’t know yet what people’s purchasing habits will be, but we have data on which beverages were previously purchased. Do you know someone who needs a water bottle so they can get free water at the drinking fountains? Send them to the Campus Cupboard to pick one up!

Q: Why are we even doing this? Why does it matter?
A: Good question. Want to talk more about this? Contact environmentalstewardship@augsburg.edu.

Q: Why did you answer all these questions with more questions?
A: Because we are complex creatures living in a complex world in which environmental sustainability doesn’t usually fit nicely into “good” or “bad” actions and outcomes. And aren’t we all here to be critical thinkers amidst our thoughtful stewardship?

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2019 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2020 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2020. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2020.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).
