Last month, Augsburg University hosted the 30th Nobel Peace Prize Forum Minneapolis (NPPF). Over the Forum’s three days, more than 1,200 individuals took part in workshops, plenaries, breakout sessions, and arts activities centered on the theme “The Paradox of Peace.”

This was the final Forum bearing the Nobel name, and building on our 30 years of experience, there is strong interest in continuing to convene an annual international forum at Augsburg to showcase our commitments to global perspectives, living faith, active citizenship, and meaningful work.

As we look toward the future, we want your ideas for what a redesigned Forum might look and feel like here at Augsburg. How will a “signature event” that expresses our institutional commitments be designed to align with students interests and curriculum across a range of departments?

Seminary & Divinity School Day is a great opportunity to explore the variety of options.

Join us for Seminary and Divinity School Day on Thursday, November 15. A group of Auggies will travel to St. Olaf College on November 15th. There we will gather with students from other area colleges to meet with representatives from at least 7 Seminary and Divinity Schools around the country for this special day of vocational reflection and conversation!

This event is free and includes lunch. Transportation to St. Olaf College will be provided to those who pre-register through the Christensen Center for Vocation. We will leave Augsburg at 8:30 am and return around 2:30 pm.

What do words like “founding” mean at a place like Augsburg? If, as a Lutheran institution, we believe in the concept of “semper reformanda” (always reforming), then shouldn’t we say that Augsburg has had multiple “foundings”—not only physically, but intellectually and theologically?

Augsburg history professor Phil Adamo will explore these questions in the 2018 Heritage Day Talk, offering examples from his new book, Hold Fast to What is Good: A History of Augsburg University in 10 Objects, written for the upcoming celebration of Augsburg’s 150th anniversary.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities.

We’re looking for debate judges and hospitality volunteers for its upcoming high school debate tournaments.

No debate experience? No problem. We train volunteers at every tournament.

What Hospitality Volunteers Do:

● Greet & guide kids, coaches, and judges as they arrive at tournaments
● Answer questions and assist with wayfinding at tournament sites
● Distribute goody bags to students and thank-you gifts to our judges

What Judges Do:

● Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
● Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
● Choose the winner of each debate!

Opportunities to Volunteer:

● October 26th & 27th: Rosebowl (Roseville HS, Roseville, MN)
● November 9th & 10th: Tamar Kaplan (Highland Park HS, St. Paul)
● November 17th: UMBrooks (U of M, West Bank)
● December 7th & 8th: UDL Championship (WTMS, St. Paul)

We have open evening shifts on Fridays and open morning or afternoon shifts on Saturdays.

There we will gather with students from other area colleges to meet with representatives from at least 7 Seminary and Divinity Schools around the country for this special day of vocational reflection and conversation!

What do words like “founding” mean at a place like Augsburg? If, as a Lutheran institution, we believe in the concept of “semper reformanda” (always reforming), then shouldn’t we say that Augsburg has had multiple “foundings”—not only physically, but intellectually and theologically?

Augsburg history professor Phil Adamo will explore these questions in the 2018 Heritage Day Talk, offering examples from his new book, Hold Fast to What is Good: A History of Augsburg University in 10 Objects, written for the upcoming celebration of Augsburg’s 150th anniversary.

Due to current construction in the Augsburg ice arena, open ice time is available for all students at the Highland Arena (800 Snelling Ave S, St Paul, MN 55116) from 4:20 to 5:20 p.m. The week of October 1st, the facility is reserved Monday and Wednesday for women’s open hockey, while Tuesday and Thursday will be for men’s open hockey. Until the completion of Augsburg Rink A, the M/W and T/Th schedule will alternate weekly between men’s open hockey and women’s open hockey. All students are welcome to participate and will need to provide their own gear (skates, helmet, pads, etc.).

Homecoming week Monday Night Event, Oct. 8
Please join us for the international opening of The Eagle and The Condor–From Standing Rock with Love. Our evening event will include a virtual introduction from the filmmaker (Kahstosera’a Paulette Moore), broadcast globally to supporters like the Augsburg Native American Film Series, and stories from our students and community members who participated in the fight against DAPL. We look forward to hearing your stories of Standing Rock as part of our conversation after the film. Bring your smart phones to participate in Facebook live conversations with the filmmaker and other participating groups around the world!

The film is based around prophecy of the Eagle and Condor that originates with nations from the South and features ceremony held at the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) site on Indigenous People’s Day, October 10th, 2016. The ancient prophecy predicted the epic Standing Rock water protection actions – and continues to challenge all to identify and unite our gifts and power.

Due to current construction in the Augsburg ice arena, open ice time is available for all students at the Highland Arena (800 Snelling Ave S, St Paul, MN 55116) from 4:20 to 5:20 p.m. The week of October 1st, the facility is reserved Monday and Wednesday for women’s open hockey, while Tuesday and Thursday will be for men’s open hockey. Until the completion of Augsburg Rink A, the M/W and T/Th schedule will alternate weekly between men’s open hockey and women’s open hockey. All students are welcome to participate and will need to provide their own gear (skates, helmet, pads, etc.).

Thank you to the 58 students, faculty and staff that got their annual flu shot on Monday. The MN Visiting Nurse Association will return on Thursday 10/25/18 for its second flu shot clinic. The clinic will be in the Center for Wellness and Counseling office from 11:00 – 12:30 pm. Please stay healthy this flu season and mark your calendar for the next clinic date on campus.

The MN Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for debate judges and hospitality volunteers for its upcoming high school debate tournaments.

No debate experience? No problem. We train volunteers at every tournament.

What Hospitality Volunteers Do:

● Greet & guide kids, coaches, and judges as they arrive at tournaments
● Answer questions and assist with wayfinding at tournament sites
● Distribute goody bags to students and thank-you gifts to our judges

What Judges Do:

● Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
● Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
● Choose the winner of each debate!

Representatives from Twin Cities PBS will be tabling in the lobby of the Christensen Center on Monday, October 1st from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm.

Donor Development Strategies is a national fundraising company that partners with public broadcasting stations all across the country, like PBS and NPR. Here locally in the St. Paul, we have partnered with Twin Cities Public Television and we run their door-to-door fundraising program. We are hiring individuals to go out into the Twin Cities and surrounding communities, go door-to-door, speak with people at their homes, and ask supporters of public media to make a donation to help ensure that their local public broadcasting station is around for the future.

In the past five years, we’ve raised over 2 million dollars for Twin Cities PBS. Our program has proven to be a critical tool in establishing a new base of support for PBS. Right now we’re looking to grow our team and do even more. We are hiring for both full- and part-time positions.

About the speaker

Rahuldeep Gill, Ph.D., is a sought-after Speaker, Author, and Igniter for social change, whose life goal is to develop effective and heartful leaders with broad perspectives to drive innovations. Through his lectures and workshops he works to build pluralism and cross-cultural relations to inspire connected communities on campus, in the workplace, and in the marketplace.

He recently published his first book, Drinking from Love’s Cup, with Oxford University Press, and he is currently writing two more books about leadership and pluralism. He is a tenured professor and Campus Interfaith Strategist at California Lutheran University, and is the visiting professor of Sikh Studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He has twice been voted Cal Lutheran’s Diversity Professor of the Year and lives in Los Angeles with his family.
