Fake Google Sharing Email

On Wednesday afternoon Augsburg, and much of the internet, saw a tricky phishing email attack that is fooling people into giving others access to their Google account.

We have a writeup of what happened and what you can do, if you clicked on the link, on the IT blog post linked to this article.

New Copiers and Copy Request System Over the Summer

The lease on the current fleet of Canon multi-function copiers is over this summer and it will be replaced by Sharp machines. If you are here in the summer, you will witness the transformation. If you are away in the summer, you will be welcomed back by a new machine with new features; I think you’ll especially like the pull-out keyboard for easier typing (a message to someone you’re scanning to, etc.) We will provide training to all. We’ll also be rolling out a new on-line copy request system; you’ll find it in the same place under Inside Augsburg>Administrative tasks.

Staff Senate Election–Submit Votes by May 2

Tuesday, May 2 the Staff Senate election closes. All Augsburg staff members received an email with a survey asking for their vote to elect the new Staff Senate representatives. Votes are anonymous and each staff member can vote once. If you are having any trouble with the survey or haven’t received it please contact staff senate at staffsenate@augsburg.edu.

AugSTEM Scholarship Deadline June 15

Applications are now open for the 2017-18 AugSTEM Program.

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF DUE-1565060), AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000 per student per year. (Differences in award amounts correspond to levels of financial need.) Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:

– Enrolled full-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, or physics)

– Within 5 semesters of graduating as of Fall 2017 (plan to graduate with STEM major from Augsburg by Fall 2019 or earlier).

– Major GPA of 3.0 or higher

– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident

– Demonstrate financial need via FAFSA

Summer Student Employment

Summer employment begins April 30th, 2017. If you are planning on having students working over the summer, please be sure to review the information below regarding student positions for summer employment.

Summer student rates will be as follows:

Student Rate: $9.50
Student Supervisory Rate: $10.50
Research Rates: $11.00 – $14.00

Steps to follow when hiring a student worker for summer 2017

1. Students returning into a position they held previously will only need a Student Employment Hire Form submitted through Hirezon/Interview Exchange.

2. Looking for a student worker to hire? Any new position will need to be posted through Human Resources to the internal student jobs board. Student Requisitions can be submitted though Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Once it’s submitted, we will post the position online. Hiring managers will be able to view applications in real time through the system.

3. When you’ve selected a student to hire, complete the Student Employment Hire Form through Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Students who have never worked on campus before will need to fill out additional HR forms, including a background check, before they will be authorized to work.

Order any personalized Augsburg College items you need to last through August by April 27. Please contact the Copy Center for critical business needs that arise after May 1. Audition for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir

Auditions for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir will be held in the Music Building (Choir Room – M3) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24, 25 and 26.

HISTORY: The choir, now in its 84th year, is one of Augsburg’s oldest ongoing organizations. For the past 37 years, it has been the anchor ensemble of the college’s Advent Vespers which is attended by some 8,000 people each year.

THIS NEXT YEAR: Mark Sedio (’76) will continue as conductor for this forthcoming academic year. In addition to his role at Augsburg, Sedio is Cantor (Director of Music) at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. He is a widely published composer, choral and organ clinician, stand-up comedian, teacher and a specialist in multi-cultural/world music. This forthcoming year, the choir will not only focus on choral repertoire from Europe (including Iceland, Slovakia, Germany, Estonia), the United States and Latin America – but will partner with the National Lutheran Choir and Palestinian ethnomusicologist Zafer Tawil for a program highlighting music of the Middle East and North Africa.

SCHEDULE: The Augsburg Choir meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. (usually 5:40 p.m. to accommodate evening classes).

WHO? YOU! Membership in the choir (by audition) is open to ANY and ALL Augsburg undergraduate students – regardless of discipline/major. Over the years we’ve worked out schedules to include those involved in athletics (football, soccer, lacrosse) and theater.

HOW? Sign-up sheets for auditions will be available at the CHOIR DESK in Christensen Hall (10:30 to 11:30 a.m.) and will then be posted outside the choir room in the music building. No preparation necessary.

Full Circle: 365 Days/Plays @Penumbra

Two Augsburg theater alums (Quinci Bachman ‘15 & Stephanie Lein Walseth ’00,) one soon-to-graduate theater major (Malick Ceesay,) & Augsburg Professor Emerita Martha Johnson are all part of the upcoming Full Circle Theater Company’s production of Suzan-Lori Parks’ 365 DAYS/PLAYS: A 2017 Remix at Penumbra Theater, St. Paul, from May 26 – June 11.

Martha Johnson directed an earlier version of this production with a student cast at Augsburg in 2012. Full Circle’s version will feature 6 directors (including Stephanie Lein Walseth, Harry Waters Jr., Rick Shiomi, Lara Trujillo, James Williams, and Martha Johnson) and a cast of 10 professional actors. Well-known African dancer Patricia Brown will choreograph. Quinci Bachman will serve as co-sound designer and stage manager. Malick Ceesay will be props designer and assistant stage manager.

Farewell to Aaron Salasek

It’s a busy week, but please stop by the admissions office this week to say goodbye to Aaron Salasek, who was named the Director of Outreach and Admissions at Inver Hills Community College. Aaron’s last day is Friday, and he his contributions to Augsburg has been a major reason for our success. We wish Aaron well, and he promises to work closely with Augsburg in his new leadership position!

As we gear up for the celebration and send off of our 2017 graduates for Commencement this Saturday, April 29, we are in strong need of more help at staffing the ceremonies.

Help is needed for the following:

-Adult Day/Graduate Studies Graduation: Saturday, April 29 from 2:00-5:30 p.m.
High Priority: NEED at least 6 more people as Usher/Ticket Taker

-Undergraduate Graduation: Saturday, April 29 from 8:00-11:30 a.m.
NEED at least 5 more people as Usher/Ticket Taker

*Ushers have the opportunity to see most of the ceremony.

Audition for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir

Auditions for the 2017-2018 Augsburg Choir will be held in the Music Building (Choir Room – M3) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24, 25 and 26.

HISTORY: The choir, now in its 84th year, is one of Augsburg’s oldest ongoing organizations. For the past 37 years it has been the anchor ensemble of the college’s Advent Vespers which is attended by some 8000 people each year.

THIS NEXT YEAR: Mark Sedio (’76) will continue as conductor for this forthcoming academic year. In addition to his role at Augsburg, Sedio is Cantor (Director of Music) at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. He is a widely published composer, choral and organ clinician, stand-up comedian, teacher and a specialist in multi-cultural/world music. This forthcoming year the choir will not only focus on choral repertoire from Europe (i.e. Iceland, Slovakia, Germany, Estonia), the United States and Latin America – but will partner with the National Lutheran Choir and Palestinian ethnomusicologist Zafer Tawil for a program highlighting music of the Middle East and North Africa.

SCHEDULE: The Augsburg Choir meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30 to 6:00 (usually 5:40 to accommodate evening classes).

WHO? YOU! Membership in the choir (by audition) is open to ANY and ALL Augsburg undergraduate students – regardless of discipline/major. Over the years we’ve worked out schedules to include those involved in athletics (football, soccer, lacrosse) and theater.

HOW? Sign-up sheets for auditions will be available at the CHOIR DESK in Christensen Hall (10:30 to 11:30) and will then be posted outside the choir room in the music building. No preparation necessary.

Augsburg CSA Drop Site

This summer the Augsburg community will have the wonderful opportunity to purchase fresh produce that will be delivered to Augsburg College in the form of a CSA share beginning mid-June. The share will contain a variety of seasonally appropriate produce. One can expect to find treats such as basil, carrots, cilantro, sweet corn, potatoes, peppers and tomatoes at some point over the summer. Delivery begins mid-June and lasts for 18 weeks or through mid-October. The food is grown on a 140 acre farm near Plato, MN. Purchasing local produce helps to support the local economy. The farmers who grow this produce are devoted to using only natural botanical and biological methods to control pests. They use other sustainable farming practices such as biodiversity, crop rotation, cover cropping and natural fertilizers to deliver healthy and nutritious produce to the table. Summer student rates will be as follows:

Student Rate: $9.50
Student Supervisory Rate: $10.50
Research Rates: $11.00 – $14.00

Steps to follow when hiring a student worker for summer 2017

1. Students returning into a position they held previously will only need a Student Employment Hire Form submitted through Hirezon/Interview Exchange.

2. Looking for a student worker to hire? Any new position will need to be posted through Human Resources to the internal student jobs board. Student Requisitions can be submitted though Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Once it’s submitted, we will post the position online. Hiring managers will be able to view applications in real time through the system.

3. When you’ve selected a student to hire, complete the Student Employment Hire Form through Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Students who have never worked on campus before will need to fill out additional HR forms, including a background check, before they will be authorized to work.

Academy of American Poets John R. Mitchell Award Announced

Senior English major Anne Dierberger has won the 2017 Academy of American Poets John R. Milton Award for her poem, “Them, again.” Marimar Bustos received Honorable Mention for her poem, “Recounting El Mozote.” The judge was Matt Rasmussen, National Book Award finalist and winner of the Walt Whitman Award and visiting poet at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Study Abroad/Away is hiring.

Calling all study abroad returnees and international students. The Center for Global Education & Experience is hiring a new Peer Advisor to start this summer.

This is a key office support position supporting students who want to study abroad or study away in the US. Responsibilities in this position include: Peer Advising, library upkeep, office management, Event Promotion, Maintenance of online application system, and study abroad/away promotion through peer-to-peer outreach, class visits, tabling, and social media.

We can offer 15-35 hours per week this summer (depending on your schedule/needs) and/or starting in August. During the semesters, we offer 10 hours per week.

WHO? YOU! Membership in the choir (by audition) is open to ANY and ALL Augsburg undergraduate students – regardless of discipline/major. Over the years we’ve worked out schedules to include those involved in athletics (football, soccer, lacrosse) and theater.

HOW? Sign-up sheets for auditions will be available at the CHOIR DESK in Christensen Hall (10:30 to 11:30) and will then be posted outside the choir room in the music building. No preparation necessary.

Study Abroad/Away Is Hiring Student Workers

Study Abroad/Away is hiring.

Calling all study abroad returnees and international students. The Center for Global Education & Experience is hiring a new Peer Advisor to start this summer.

This is a key office support position supporting students who want to study abroad or study away in the US. Responsibilities in this position include: Peer Advising, library upkeep, office management, Event Promotion, Maintenance of online application system, and study abroad/away promotion through peer-to-peer outreach, class visits, tabling, and social media.

We can offer 15-35 hours per week this summer (depending on your schedule/needs) and/or starting in August. During the semesters, we offer 10 hours per week.

Nabo and Einsteins will be closed from Friday 4/14- Sunday 4/16.

On Friday April 14th The Commons will only be open from 11am-1pm for Brunch, and 5-7pm for Dinner. On Saturday and Sunday The Commons will have normal Brunch and Dinner hours, 11:30am-1pm, and 5-7pm.

Staff – Good Idea for Community Service Time

The Homework Help Program at Trinity Congregation here in Cedar Riverside is looking for people to work with youth on their homework any afternoon of the week that fits your schedule. The program goes from 3:30pm-6:00pm. You can go for one hour or more. This is a good way to use your community service hours.

Jila Nikpay’s Upcoming Film Screenings

Jila Nikpay’s documentary, Dreaming With Lola (2016) will be premiered at the San Francisco Green Film Festival on Sunday April 23 at the Roxie Theater, San Francisco as well as Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF) at the St. Anthony Main Theatre 2 @ 7:10 pm.

Other screenings include Twin Cities Public Television (TPT) on May 14 & 15, and Walker Art Center on August 3 rd.

Call for Student Hosts

The Nobel Peace Prize Forum is seeking students who can act as hosts for visiting students in the Fall of 2017 during the important event days. Students are asked to step forward as hosts to other college and university students who will be visiting the Twin Cities for the Forum from the 14th-16th of September. Students will be coming from all over the country (as far as Hawaii) and we may also have a few international students on campus.
If you know you are living on campus next Fall, then you would make a perfect host! Anderson, Luther, and Mortensen would make great spaces for visiting students to stay, but any on campus living area would be fantastic. We are looking for students who would be willing to help out and provide space for 2-3 nights.
As a host you will have the opportunity to get to know a student outside of Augsburg. It is a great experience that allows you to meet some new faces and contribute to the college’s rich academic community. You will serve as another student’s introduction to the Twin Cities, and have the opportunity to connect with non-Augsburg students.

New Theology and Public Leadership Degree

The Religion department will be launching a new degree in Theology and Public Leadership in the fall of 2017. This degree program will be replacing the Youth and Family Ministry Degree. This new major will include concentrations in Youth Studies, Leadership and Management, Community Engagement, Worship and Music, Environmental Stewardship, Advocacy and Public Policy, Human Service, and Cross-Cultural Relations. Donate Used Athletic Shoes and Equipment to Cedar Riverside

The HPE Department is collecting gently used athletic shoes and equipment for the Cedar Riverside School and the Check it out program. Please drop off items at the collection boxes located in the 3rd floor of Kennedy Center and Sabo Center. We will collect items until April 21. Yard games would be greatly appreciated, but any donations would be great.
