The Auggie Pass is an all-you-can-ride pass for Augsburg day students. Supported by the green fee, Metro Transit and Augsburg, the Auggie Pass is good on any bus, any time, and any light rail, any time, as well as the NorthStar line to Anoka.

Students can get their Auggie Pass at the Library Circulation Desk – please bring Augsburg ID.

The passes are good August 1, 2019 through May 30, 2020.

For students who use Metro Mobility, please email Mike Fetting, fettingm@augsburg.edu. The Auggie Pass does not work on Metro Mobility, so we have Go To cards with pre-loaded $180 value – and will add more value as needed.

Augsburg is now working with the People’s Center to provide certain clinic services to students (all academic programs) who don’t have insurance for a $5 co-pay.
The People’s Center is located at 425 20th Avenue South, one block west from Augsburg, off Riverside Avenue.

With a $5.00 co-pay, the following are available to Augsburg students who do not have insurance:

• Office visits for acute or chronic medical problems
• Annual physical exams – 1 per year
• Sexually transmitted diseases screening and lab work done at The People’s Center (lab diagnostics done outside of The People’s Center are not covered)
• X-rays performed at The People’s Center
• Tetanus immunization
• Lab tests performed at The People’s Center
• Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux)
• Casts, crutches, splints, slings and ace bandages
• Allergy injections (prescription and supply must be provided by student)
• Flu shots

If you have health insurance, your insurance provider may cover medical services through The People’s Center. The clinic will bill your insurance for medical services and you will be responsible for any co-pays or deductibles associated with your insurance. You should check with your insurance provider to see if services at The People’s Center will be covered.

Smiley’s Clinic remains available for students – they accept most forms of insurance.

DPS will provide an escort to The People’s Center and/or to Smiley’s Clinic.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, equips Twin Cities students with all the basics needed to become debaters: curriculum, coaches, tournaments, and supplies. As our high school, middle school, Spanish, East African, and financial literacy debate programs grow each year, our need for supplies grows, too.

Our goal is to equip 100 more students with debate supplies in the 2019-20 school year.

Our most-needed item is expanding file folders/accordion folders!

REMINDER: Priority for federal and state work study eligibility

Beginning November 1, work study positions are open to all students.

As our annual kick-off to the school year, Augsburg Wellbeing is sponsoring a School Supply Drive to feel good, by doing good. All donations will be delivered to People Serving People. This non-profit organization is located in downtown Minneapolis. As the largest and most comprehensive, family-focused homeless shelter in Minnesota, your donations will have a huge impact in our community. The course is ML 599 Navigating Local and Global Conflict taught by Lori Brandt Hale of the Religion Department. This course can count toward a Master of Arts in Leadership, the Graduate Certificate in Leadership Studies, or can be used as an elective in another graduate program (must be pre-approved by that dept.) We have added a new member to our Admin LFC team! Tyler LeClear Vachta starts this week as the newest member of our IT team, and will be supporting both Augsburg and Luther Seminary in his new role. Tyler comes to us with a wealth of education experience as a former teacher in St. Paul Public schools, as well as some solid tech skills as Head of Marketing and Education for a manufacturing firm.

With Tyler’s addition to the team, we are back to full strength in our IT support for staff at Augsburg, and have expanded our support level for Luther Seminary! Erin, Jacob, Tyler, and Jim, along with our student support specialist, Emily, will be happy to assist you with any technology needs and questions you may have. On August 13, Sarah Swindall joins the Campus Ministry team to serve as the Pastoral Intern for the 2019-2020 academic year. A native of Naperville, Illinois, and graduate of Augustana University in Sioux Falls, Sarah is a Master of Divinity student at Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago (LSTC). Sarah is faithfully curious and passionate about building strong communities and engaging others in genuine dialogue. In her free time, Sarah loves to swing dance, write creatively, and crochet blankets. We give thanks to Sarah’s support team for this year of learning, ministry, and vocational engagement: Coach Keith Bateman, Prof. Doug Green, Prof. Phil Quanbeck, II, Allyson Green, and Lonna Field. Please join me in welcoming Caroline Wack (pronounced walk) to Lindell Library. In her role as Student Success Librarian, Caroline is responsible for leading the development of a multi-faceted library instruction program, assessing the effectiveness of our instructional offerings, and collaborating with faculty to integrate information literacy concepts into the curriculum.

Caroline just completed her graduate school studies at the University of Michigan School of Information where her coursework included Transformative Learning, Teaching with Technology, and Research Methods for Information Professionals. She holds a bachelor degree in American Studies from the University of Notre Dame and won her department’s award for best thesis that year, “Literary Environmentalism in the Desert Southwest”.

Members of the Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are coming together to create a Campus Share Shop for the students of Augsburg! Our purpose is to create a space where students can check out goods they need, rather than purchasing new items. By doing this, we hope to:

-Reduce the consumption of material goods
-Reduce students’ costs
-Create a community space where students can take part in informal learning around sustainable practices and skill-sharing.

This is a project created by students for students, so we are reaching out to you to find out what you would want to see in the share shop. Please take a few minutes to take a short survey that will aid in creating a share shop that will properly serve the students of Augsburg.

Hey all,

Augsburg’s Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are proud to announce a new student resource on campus: the student Share Shop. We are working towards opening this space in the sublevel of the old science building by Fall, 2019. To help us get started we are asking you—students, staff, and faculty at Augsburg—for some helpful donations.
Based off of a recent survey, here are some of the things we are looking for for the share shop:

– Household / dorm Repair (Spackle, Tool kits, poster putty)
– Recreational gear (sports equipment, out door games, hammocks, etc.)
– Office materials (calculators, sharpeners, staplers)
– First aid kits
– Twin XL sheets (new or washed)
– Weather related items (umbrellas, shovels, extra hats/scarves/mittens)
– Sewing/glasses repair kits
– Hot pots or rice cookers

Looking for a unique lunch experience? Join us as we walk to the Blue Line light rail from campus and take it downtown to the Nicollet Mall. From there we will walk to both Marquette and 2nd Ave where we will choose from a variety of food truck options. After lunch we will head back together. Throughout the trip we will offer transit tips and tricks while answering any questions participants have. Move Minnesota will provide free transit passes but participants will have to cover their lunch expenses. Travel time is about 20 minutes each way.

This non-profit organization is located in downtown Minneapolis. As the largest and most comprehensive, family-focused homeless shelter in Minnesota, your donations will have a huge impact in our community. Augsburg is now working with the People’s Center to provide certain clinic services to students (all academic programs) who don’t have insurance for a $5 co-pay.

The People’s Center is located at 425 20th Avenue South, one block west from Augsburg, off Riverside Avenue.

➢ With a $5.00 co-pay, the following are available to Augsburg students who do not have insurance:
● Office visits for acute or chronic medical problems
● Annual physical exams – 1 per year
● Sexually transmitted diseases screening and lab work done at The People’s Center (lab diagnostics done outside of The People’s Center are not covered).
● X-rays performed at The People’s Center
● Tetanus immunization
● Lab tests performed at The People’s Center
● Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux)
● Casts, crutches, splints, slings and ace bandages
● Allergy injections (prescription and supply must be provided by student)
● Flu shots

➢ If you have health insurance, your insurance provider may cover medical services through The People’s Center. The clinic will bill your insurance for medical services and you will be responsible for any co-pays or deductibles associated with your insurance. You should check with your insurance provider to see if services at The People’s Center will be covered.

Smiley’s Clinic remains available for students – they accept most forms of insurance.

In the coming weeks, you will begin to see the installation of two different projects to celebrate the beginning of the Sesquicentennial. On August 1st, we will begin installing Each, together, a group action of the INSIDE OUT project that will include over 1,200 portraits. This installation will cover ten campus building facades along Riverside from 25th Ave South to Hoversten Chapel. These buildings will include the Flower Shop, Maintenance Facilities, Ice Arena, Anderson Music Hall, and Foss Center. Installation will begin at Foss Center and move toward 25th Ave S and will take four weeks to complete.

Also being installed during this time will be On This Spot, a historical views of the campus. This installation will cover a portion of the outside of Christensen Center and Sverdrup Hall, and various interior windows throughout campus. Installation for both projects will be complete before the start of the Fall Semester.

We look forward to celebrating with you, and appreciate your patience in the installation of these two projects.

You will meet students at 5:30pm in the Oyate Commons (Christensen Center-Suite 2) on Thursday August 29th. We are asking for you to host 2-4 students and drive them to your home for a meal. We ask that you bring them back by around 8:30 pm or sooner. It helps to be hosting with someone, whether that is your partner, family or you can pair with another faculty or staff on campus.

Cheryl Leuning, PhD, RN, Professor, Augsburg University, was elected to Augustana University’s Board of Trustees in December, 2018. Cheryl is a graduate from the BA Nursing program at Augustana University. She received her M.S. Public Health Nursing from the U of MN and her PhD in Nursing from the University of Utah. Cheryl taught in both the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs at Augustana University prior to coming to Augsburg University. She officially joined Augsburg in 2002 and served as the Department Chair until 2014. Currently Cheryl is a full-time Professor teaching in the graduate programs in the Nursing Department. She leads student practica and teaches courses in a variety of cultural contexts and settings, including Pine Ridge Reservation in SD, as well as the Amish community in SE MN and to the rural African communities in Namibia.

Please congratulate Dr. Cheryl Leuning on her election to the Board of Trustees at Augustana University.

Dr. Erin Sugure, social work faculty, pursued an interesting angle in her recent research – moral injury experienced by teachers. Published in the American Educational Research Journal, it explores ideas around moral injury in our public school system. You can read a summary of the research in an article by Education Week. Dr. Sugure was a school social worker for 11 years before pursuing her PhD. Congratulations Erin!

Augsburg is now working with the People’s Center to provide certain clinic services to students (all academic programs) who don’t have insurance for a $5 co-pay.

The People’s Center is located at 425 20th Avenue South, one block west from Augsburg, off Riverside Avenue.

➢ With a $5.00 co-pay, the following are available to Augsburg students who do not have insurance:
● Office visits for acute or chronic medical problems
● Annual physical exams – 1 per year
● Sexually transmitted diseases screening and lab work done at The People’s Center (lab diagnostics done outside of The People’s Center are not covered).
● X-rays performed at The People’s Center
● Tetanus immunization
● Lab tests performed at The People’s Center
● Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux)
● Casts, crutches, splints, slings and ace bandages

We are working towards opening this space in the sublevel of the old science building by Fall, 2019. Hi, my name is Ntsaisnag or China Vang and I am Miss Hmong American 1st Runner Up of 2019. I am a second-year at Augsburg University and I am currently undecided for my major, but I am exploring the sociology and psychology field. Within my first year, I found that having a laptop is very convenient because a lot of colleges now require you to go online and do assignments. I think that laptops are beneficial because its portable and during late nights when libraries are closed I was able to complete my assignments from the comfort of my dorm. That’s why I am giving away two laptops to help others achieve their goals.

The Paideia Institute, co-directed by Dr. Anne Kaufman and Dr. Rachel Lloyd, will be conducting sessions on campus from July 22-26th. This annual summer institute brings educators together to develop ways to bring Paideia into their teaching practices.

The 9th annual Augsburg Volleyball Varsity Team Camp will begin their time on campus this Friday, July 26th and will stay through Sunday, July 28th. Twelve area high schools will be in attendance, spending their time here training on and off the court with Augsburg University Volleyball coaching staff, Jane Becker and Tija Rudzitis.

Next Monday, July 29, Augsburg’s Film and New Media department will host the University Film and Video Association’s (UFVA) national conference on campus. Approximately 450 registrants and visitors will be attending sessions held across campus for the duration of the week.
