Last week, the tower crane — which had been on the construction site since May 2016 — was removed from the Hagfors Center site, as it is not required for the remainder of the construction project. The Augsburg Department of Public Safety would like to remind our entire campus community that facility use in Kennedy Center and Si Melby Hall is for students, staff, faculty, alumni and authorized users. Members of these groups are not permitted to host guests in this space. Check-in procedures after regular business hours will be enforced and an appropriate picture ID will be required. Fob access will also be required after 5:00pm daily. Those found not in compliance will be asked to leave and may be legally prohibited from returning to Augsburg’s campus. Any student, staff, faculty, alumni or authorized user who intentionally violates or attempts to circumvent this policy may lose access privileges as well as face appropriate disciplinary actions.

The glass fritting currently being installed on the 3-story lobby curtainwall is the first of the more than two dozen sponsored art projects in the Hagfors Center. This week’s construction summary includes two photos of the glass fritting.

Facilities is doing an emergency steam repair Thursday, March 16, from 6:30AM – 12:00PM. This repair will affect the heat in Anderson Hall, Christensen Center, Urness Hall, Mortensen Tower, Lindell Library, Foss, Music and Melby. It will feel a little cool by mid morning in these buildings because of the steam being down. The heat will be coming back on by noon. The Augsburg College Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to a call on the evening of Sunday, March 12, about potential gunshots outside of Kennedy Center at approximately 9 p.m. DPS called 9-1-1 and Minneapolis Police Department officers were on the scene within three minutes. No students, faculty, staff, or visitors to campus were injured. Suspects had fled the scene by the time the MPD officers arrived. During the initial course of the investigation, officers found that one bullet had entered a fitness center window of Kennedy Center and lodged in a wall.

This is an ongoing investigation by the Minneapolis Police Department. Individuals with any information about the incident and/or individuals involved, are urged to call MPD at 612.348.2345 or Augsburg DPS at 612.330.1717.

A Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) report on ladder safety showed some startling statistics. More than 90,000 people receive emergency room treatment from ladder-related injuries every year.
Don’t be a part of the statistics. Here are some safety tips from the National Safety Institute:

It is unsafe to use a ladder that is too long or too short. When using a Step Ladder, standing on the top cap or the step below the top cap is not permitted due to the increased likelihood of losing your balance. When using an Extension Ladder, the top three rungs are not to be used for climbing. An Extension Ladder is too long if the ladder extends more than three (3) feet beyond the upper support point.
Factors contributing to falls from ladders include haste, sudden movement, lack of attention, the condition of the ladder (worn or damaged), the user’s age or physical condition, or both, and the user’s footwear.

Reduce your chances of falling during the climb by:

• cleaning the soles of shoes to maximize traction
• climbing slowly and deliberately while avoiding sudden movements;
• never attempting to move a ladder while standing on it;
• Do not overreach or lean while working so that you don’t fall off the ladder sideways or pull the ladder over sideways while standing on it.

When climbing a ladder, it is safest to utilize Three Points-of-Contact because it minimizes the chances of slipping and falling from the ladder. At all times during ascent, descent, and working, the climber must face the ladder and have two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand in contact with the ladder steps, rungs and/or side rails. It is important to note that the climber must not carry any objects in either hand that can interfere with a firm grip on the ladder.

We have reached the halfway point in terms of the number of days for the Hagfors Center construction project, and progress continues on time, under budget, and with a good safety record.

The Christensen Center Commons is expected to resume food service beginning with breakfast on Monday, March 6.

Crews have been working around-the-clock to clean, repair, and restore the Commons, and that work is nearing completion. The Minnesota Department of Health will inspect the food service areas on Wednesday, March 1. After inspection, A’viands will start moving operations back to Christensen Center Commons with the plan to resume service with breakfast on Monday, March 6.

An update will be provided after Wednesday, March 1.

Facilities will be sounding the alarms in Christensen Center for 2-3 minutes today, Monday, February 27, between 12-2 p.m. We have to sound the alarm because of the work being done on the upper floor of CC and it has to be sounded before the end of the day because of state code. The Minneapolis Fire Department issued a report that the fire in Christensen Center on January 28 was an “accidental fire” that started in a clothes dryer and affected an area of 20 x 20 in the kitchen.

To support the repair and subsequent cleaning required, Christensen Center third floor will be closed for repairs through Monday, February 27. The main and lower levels of Christensen Center will remain open during this time.

Environmental Assurance and other companies will monitor air quality on the third floor and elsewhere in the building; no hazardous air quality conditions will result from this recovery work. The recovery work will require heavy use of the elevators in Christensen Center, but any materials transported will not affect air quality.

Nabo will be open its usual hours of Monday-Thursday until 8 pm to ensure service for evening students.

As noted in earlier messages, resident students with meal plans will have dinner at Nabo from 4:30-7 pm, but grab-n-go and beverages are available for evening students during the mealtime and until closing at 8 pm.

A reminder that Einstein’s in Christensen Center has returned to service. Those hours are
Monday-Thursday: 7:30am until 9:00pm

As 2016 drew to a close, construction crews continued work on the Hagfors Center for Science, Business, and Religion.

Prior to last week, the final concrete pour for the floor of the skyway was completed, and 21st Avenue South was re-opened for through traffic.
