On Monday, March 1, AAC approved the following proposals:
*BUS 362 and BUS 465 made changes to prerequisites.
*HIS 355 updated its title and description. The new course title is: “In the Aftermath of War: History, Memory and Transitional Justice in Central America”.
*A new Augsburg Experience was brought by CGEE and the Pan Afrikan Center.
*There were revisions made to the Chemistry Department Honors’ requirements.
*CSC 210 made changes to its prerequisites.
Two additional proposals were discussed, but the committee decided to await votes due to some remaining questions/concerns.
The committee was also updated on the TEL subcommittee’s intentions to pursue status as a standing committee.

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 80 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place VIRTUALLY on April 13th. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) by March 5th (a mentor-approved abstract is required to register).

Fellowship in the MINNE program this year offers a unique opportunity to engage fully in the course of study offered by the JCRC Holocaust education zoom webinars. We are offering a $200 stipend which will be awarded upon successful completion of all program requirements.
Because of the limited number of spaces available, we wish to ensure that those who are accepted into the program are able to make the most of the experience. The primary criteria for admission to the program are demonstration of interest in the offerings of the program and commitment to furthering your education about the Holocaust.
All fellows are expected to attend a minimum of 5 of the 15 1.25 hour classes that comprise the course. For a full list of course offerings, visit https://www.minndakjcrc.org/education_programs/lessons/

on Wednesday, April 7th, from 4-6pm. This co-sponsored panel event will feature David Stovall (Professor of Criminology, Law and Justice at the University of Illinois, Chicago) in addition to students and/or community members.

Challenge yourself, take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and gain valuable real-world skills for navigating the complexities of the 21st Century. This coming September, the next group of students, faculty, and staff will embark from Lake Itasca to begin their hundred-day expedition by canoe and van down the length of the Mississippi River. Students take courses in environmental justice, climate change, politics in the American heartland, outdoor leadership, and undertake individual research projects. In addition to spending time in St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans, the group paddles and camps in the “Wild Miles” on the Lower Mississippi, the heavily industrialized “Chemical Corridor,” and finishes by paddling to the Gulf of Mexico, 2,345 river miles from the headwaters. Students interested in joining the program are invited to apply through the Augsburg Study Away web portal. Deadline for applying is March 15.

All faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world. – we’ll trade ideas, advice, highs, lows, successes, and failures – or maybe we’ll just plain old vent. Most importantly, we will attempt to inoculate ourselves against one of the more insidious side effects of this pandemic – isolation. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, or pour a glass of wine, and Zoom in to support your fellow instructors and work through this challenging time together.

Interested in exploring firsthand the work of undoing the legacies of slavery and settler colonialism in the American heartland? Tired of Zoom classes and want to have some real-world adventures? This coming September, the next group of students, faculty, and staff will embark from Lake Itasca to begin their hundred-day expedition by canoe and van down the length of the Mississippi River. Students take courses in environmental justice, climate change, politics in the American heartland, with a focus on anti-racism work. In addition to spending time in St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans, the group paddles and camps portions of the river around the Line 3 pipeline construction, part of the “Wild Miles” on the Lower Mississippi, the heavily industrialized “Chemical Corridor,” and finishes by paddling to the Gulf of Mexico, site of powerful resistance being carried out by local Indigenous communities. Students interested in joining the program are invited to apply through the Augsburg Study Away web portal.

For this Teaching Tip, Tara Mader (Exercise Science) shares how she has incorporated a student-centered investigative learning technique (POGIL) into her Anatomy and Physiology classroom (both in-person and online) to facilitate student-student interaction and promote inquiry.

Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.
In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.
Who is Eligible?
Christensen and Interfaith Scholars – Current sophomores and juniors who plan to study on campus all of the 2021-22 academic year.
Sabo Scholars – Current students (any level) who plan to study on campus all of the 2021-22 academic year.

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 80 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place VIRTUALLY on April 13th. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) by March 5th (a mentor-approved abstract is required to register).

General Education Assessment: Where do we go from here? (11 am – 11:45 am)
The newly-minted set of General Education Learning Outcomes have now been mapped to every course in the general education curriculum, providing us with new information on where and how students achieve the core learning outcomes of Augsburg’s signature curriculum. During this session, we will review the learning outcomes, as well as our preliminary data on where students achieve these outcomes. As we pivot to next steps, we invite faculty/staff feedback about implementation plans, including what resources are needed to support an expanded assessment of student learning in our general education curriculum.
Institutional Student Surveys: Closing the Loop (12 pm – 1 pm)
After hearing from over a thousand students in our fall institutional surveys, faculty and staff workshopped ideas on how to better serve students in changing times. But how do we transform these ideas into action? In this session, we will review the ideas collected during the Fall student survey workshops and discuss straightforward ways to better meet student needs.
For those who want to take the work to the next level, staff and faculty will identify an area of interest and join in small group discussion and planning. Our objective is to conclude this session having created collaborative working groups built around key themes, with a call to action and supportive resources for those who want to pilot new approaches to improve student experience.

All faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world. – we’ll trade ideas, advice, highs, lows, successes, and failures – or maybe we’ll just plain old vent. Most importantly, we will attempt to inoculate ourselves against one of the more insidious side effects of this pandemic – isolation. At the Monday, February 15 AAC Meeting, the following proposals were discussed and approved:
-The Community Engagement concentration of the Theology and Public Leadership replaced the requirement of SWK 230 with SWK 406.
-MUS 221: Introduction to Music Technology removed all prerequisites from the course.
-The American Indian Studies department made revisions to their Major and Minor. They also added courses, as well as changed two course titles and added a Humanities LAF to two courses. Overall, they had 10 proposals approved at the February 15 meeting.
In addition to the above, the committee approved a policy that provides a general framework for course levels and the scaffolding of courses through a major/program. Implementation is on-hold while further details are refined.

The First Year Experience/AugSem program is seeking faculty to be a part of a pilot program for instructors teaching an AugSem during the fall 2021.
Goal: Create a cohort of instructors who will meet to discuss anti-racist pedagogy and student learning in relation to working with first year students.
Fellows will need to commit to attending all 1-hour FYE Teaching Fellows meetings in spring 2021 and fall 2021 semesters. Meetings will take place in: March, April, May, September, October and November.
FYE Teaching Fellow positions are open only to those planning to teach an AugSem course in the fall of 2021.
To apply, simply submit a brief statement of why you would like to be a FYE Teaching Fellow to Lyz Wendland, Director of First Year Experience: wendland@augsburg.edu by February 19th, 2021.

Incorporating intentionality, mindfulness, and gratitude in teaching and learning
Tara Mader (faculty in the department of Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science) and Dan Ibarra (faculty in the Department of Art and Design) will explore the benefits and techniques of employing gratitude, mindfulness, and intentionality in the classroom.
Premiering Wednesday, February 17 at 3:10 pm.
This year, EDTalks will be pre-recorded and have a community “premiere” on Zoom hosted by CTL at 3:10 pm on days when there is a faculty meeting. These premieres will end no later than 3:30pm to allow plenty of time to log into the Faculty Zoom meeting early. After the premier, the recording will be posted on the CTL website, along with any resources (if applicable).

By default, only non-empty grades in the Moodle Gradebook are aggregated; the others are ignored. This means that if instructors want students to have an accurate understanding of their progress in a course, a value must be inserted into the points window. If students have not submitted an assignment, instructors need to insert a 0 (rather than leaving the place blank) to affect the final grade. Below is a link to a quick way to add zeros for all students who haven’t already received a grade for an activity.

The URGO Phase 1 Summer Research Application deadline has been extended to February 16th at 11:59pm, it must be completed on time to be considered for Phase 2 Summer Research. Please have your faculty research mentor email it to urgo@augsburg.edu. The Phase 2 Application is now due March 1. This change is to give students more time to find a research mentor and to work with them to write a strong application.

General Education Assessment: Where do we go from here? (11 am – 11:45 am)
The newly-minted set of General Education Learning Outcomes have now been mapped to every course in the general education curriculum, providing us with new information on where and how students achieve the core learning outcomes of Augsburg’s signature curriculum. During this session, we will review the learning outcomes, as well as our preliminary data on where students achieve these outcomes. As we pivot to next steps, we invite faculty/staff feedback about implementation plans, including what resources are needed to support an expanded assessment of student learning in our general education curriculum.
Institutional Student Surveys: Closing the Loop (12 pm – 1 pm)
After hearing from over a thousand students in our fall institutional surveys, faculty and staff workshopped ideas on how to better serve students in changing times. But how do we transform these ideas into action? In this session, we will review the ideas collected during the Fall student survey workshops and discuss straightforward ways to better meet student needs.
For those who want to take the work to the next level, staff and faculty will identify an area of interest and join in small group discussion and planning. Our objective is to conclude this session having created collaborative working groups built around key themes, with a call to action and supportive resources for those who want to pilot new approaches to improve student experience.

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Faculty Development Committee invite your nominations for the annual Augsburg University Distinguished Contributions Awards. Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for teaching, scholarship, and service. All faculty or full-time staff who have been employed at the university for at least three years are eligible for the awards.
Nominations are due Monday, March 22.
Distinguished Contribution in Teaching – Up to two awards may be given in this category, one for full-time faculty and one for adjunct faculty (2 courses per term or less).

The URGO Phase 1 Summer Research Application deadline has been extended to February 16th, it must be completed on time to be considered for Phase Two Summer Research. The Phase 2 Application is now due March 1. This change is to give students more time to find a research mentor and to work with them to write a strong application.

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 80 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place VIRTUALLY on April 13th. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) by March 5th (a mentor-approved abstract is required to register).
