Learn and Develop Skills with Coursera

submitted by grayk2@augsburg.edu

It is important to continue to learn and develop skills even if you are not able to get a job or internship over the summer. Wondering where to start? Enroll in a free online course or training module through Coursera. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has partnered with Coursera to provide free career-focused, online learning resources to Minnesotans.

Coursera offers 3,800 courses and training modules from over 200 top business and universities, including more than 60 courses from the University of Minnesota. These learning opportunities are aimed at preparing people for in-demand jobs.

For example, students can earn certificates from Google, IBM, and Cisco in such areas as architecture, IT support and SAS programming to prepare for entry-level technology jobs. There’s also room for personal interests, including languages, arts and humanities. Coursera’s most popular course, called the Science of Well-Being, is taught by a professor at Yale University.

The Coursera platform can be used on mobile phones and is available in multiple languages. For those without internet access at home, the courses can be downloaded and accessed offline.

If you are a Minnesota resident and have interest in using Coursera, you must register before September 30, 2020 and will have access to the platform through March 31,2021 and they will be available for a fee after that.

If you are interested in other job training or career exploration opportunities or want to learn more about what training or education pathways are right for you, schedule an appointment with a Career Coach in Handshake or email careers@augsburg.edu.

ICE Rescinds Decision on International Students

submitted by hermansb@augsburg.edu

Yesterday, ICE decided to rescind the rules put forward on July 6, 2020, and will abandoned the restrictions on international students holding F-1 visas. This is great news for our international community, not only on campus but for students attending universities all over the United States.

President Paul Pribbenow had signed an amicus brief with the President’s Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration supporting a lawsuit challenging the restrictions, and one of our international students, Jonas Bergmann Poulsen, was interviewed by MSNBC last week (follow link below) on the impact the guidelines would have on him personally and on the international community at large.
https://www.msnbc.com/hallie-jackson/watch/international-student-on-possible-deportation-why-now-87387717796?fbclid=IwAR13Jd8DGnP-NYmYrh4STNsRS4ZDsuzuoX8Ls6EMPjEFxBY6LQvYbiR2DU8

The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) team continues to work with our international students to create successful plans for the fall semester. The blend of course formats Augsburg plans to offer, will advance students toward degrees completions—for those currently in the country AND for those who struggle to return to campus due to border restrictions.

We thank the Augsburg community for all for the support given in the last 9 days!

New ICE Guidelines: Augsburg Supporting our International Students

submitted by hermansb@augsburg.edu

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is aware of the SEVP/ICE Announcement released Monday, July 6, regarding restrictions on online course delivery for international students on F-1 visas. We knew there was a real possibility that SEVP/ICE would revert to its standard online course delivery restrictions. And that is unfortunately what happened.

It’s important to note that Augsburg University does not plan to teach fully online/remote in the fall. We will have courses available in several hybrid models that include face-to-face instruction, as well as some fully in-person courses that should keep our international students in compliance.

Now that we have the official announcement—as well as the university’s course delivery plans—we, together with the Deans, Registrar, and Advising, will seek to develop course delivery options for all international students, undergraduate and graduate.

Individualized approaches will be sought as we look at each international student’s degree plan and course registration. These plans will look different for those who are currently in the U.S. versus those who are currently in their home countries.

All of our international students have been informed in more detail, but we want the broader campus community to be aware of these considerations as well.

President Pribbenow has joined the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration amicus brief in support of the Harvard/MIT lawsuit challenging the lCE SEVP guidance.

Two of our international students, Daniil Gerasimov (Russia) and Jonas Bergmann Poulsen (Denmark) have been approached by the media (Kare 11 News and MSNBC), and will share their voices on how these regulations will impact them as well as our international community. Links will be shared when available.

Bettine Hoff Hermanson and the ISSS team are available to support our students and answer questions ( hermansb@augsburg.edu).

Find Fellowship with Other Faculty

submitted by maherk@augsburg.edu

Tomorrow is the second “Fellowship Friday”!

CTL is joining Bridget Robinson-Riegler, Psychology Professor and member of Faculty Senate, to bring you Fellowship Fridays support sessions. Beginning Friday, June 19, all faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world. – we’ll trade ideas, advice, highs, lows, successes, and failures – or maybe we’ll just plain old vent. Most importantly, we will attempt to inoculate ourselves against one of the more insidious side effects of this pandemic – isolation. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, or pour a glass of wine, and Zoom in to support your fellow instructors and work through this challenging time together.
