Want to Volunteer Before the Semester Ends? Get Hours in at MNUDL’s Championship Tournament

submitted by froehlic@augsburg.edu

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities Metro.

Do you want an opportunity to complete service hours before the semester ends? We still have one opportunity. On December 8th and 9th, we will hold our championship tournament for the high school national topic season. The December 8th half of the tournament is virtual, and the December 9th half is in-person at Washington Technology Magnet School.

Judges watch students debate, listen to their arguments, choose a winner, and provide constructive feedback to the students so they can improve.

No debate experience? No problem. We will train you, and those without experience will be assigned to judge novice debates.

Join Us for Trans Day of Remembrance

submitted by crowellt@augsburg.edu

Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is on Monday, November 20. TDOR follows Transgender Awareness Week (Nov. 13-19) and is an annual observance and honoring of the trans community members whose lives we have lost.

This year, LGBTQIA+ Student Services would like to offer you an open invitation to join us for our TDOR services. We will be at Daily Chapel from 10:40 AM – 11:00 AM for a short presentation on the history of TDOR and a brief reflection from the LGBTQIA+ Student Services Program Manager. Later in the day, we will be hosting our annual TDOR Vigil from 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM in the Marshall Room.

The campus community is welcome to attend either Daily Chapel, the vigil, or both to share space and honor our trans community members. The presence and support of allies is appreciated in the space but we humbly ask that non-trans/non-queer folks be mindful of which bodies and voices are prioritized in these spaces.

As part of the TDOR vigil, trans students are welcome and encouraged to share their voices by offering words or reflections if they are comfortable and willing. For more information, please reach out to the LGBTQIA+ Student Services Program Manager at crowellt@augsburg.edu if you are interested in participating.

We hope to have you share these spaces with us on Monday, November 20.

Join us in Hoversten Chapel at 11:30 a.m. for the next installment in our Uncovering Vocation series. Dr. Jennifer Diaz, Associate Professor and Chair of Education, will share stories about how her vocational path was revealed for her life’s work to become an educator. The stories will explore how we may not always know what is coming next and sometimes in the midst of uncertainty, the world just might surprise us. Come and learn more about Jennifer, our community, and how we seek to live our lives for the sake of the neighbor.

Staff Breakfast on Tuesday, November 21 at 8:30 a.m. at Maria’s Cafe on Franklin Ave

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

Join your staff senators and colleagues for a meal and a chat at a real neighborhood favorite. Maria’s is a member of Augsburg Local and serves up wonderful Columbian staples like Arepas Rellenas, Pandequeso and Cachapas Venezolanas alongside U.S. American breakfast classics like french toast, oatmeal, eggs and bacon. The restaurant is just up Franklin in the Ancient Traders Market across the street from Pow Wow Grounds. Sadly, we don’t have the budget to buy you breakfast, but we are practiced in witty banter. Guffaws not guaranteed, but likely.

Please fill out this form to let us know if you would like to attend: https://forms.gle/srNh9VfG5FgQUmfN6

We will need to let María know in advance how many to expect, please submit your form no later than Friday, November 17th. We will send you a Google Calendar invitation with details. All guests will be responsible for their own purchases. Please email gilmerje@augsburg.edu with any questions.

Have you ever wanted to peek behind the scenes at the Cedar? Learn more about how to participate at our venue by attending our monthly Volunteer Orientation led by volunteer coordinator Jared Hemming! Beginning with our first show 30 years ago, all of the Cedar’s events have been staffed by volunteers in our program, which now includes more than 400 members. Volunteers earn credit to see future shows for free. Tasks include setting up the venue, selling tickets and concessions, and cleaning at the end of each performance. All are welcome to join our volunteer program.

VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION FAQS:
Do I need to bring anything? No, all materials will be provided.
How do I sign up? Reserve a spot via Eventbrite above, and/or email Jared at volunteer@thecedar.org with your first and last name and which orientation you’d like to sign up for.

What if I reserve a spot but can’t make it? No worries – we host monthly orientation meetings. Scroll down to next month’s calendar to see if our next orientation works for you.

Can my underage child volunteer? Volunteers must be 18+ to serve alcohol and to cleanup, with respect to alcohol sales and curfew laws. However, if you’d like to volunteer with your child, signup for the orientation and we can accommodate.

If I sign up for the orientation, can I bring a friend? The more the merrier here at The Cedar. Feel free to bring anyone who might be interested in volunteering to our orientation.
