Opening Convocation – the official kick-off event for the 2024-25 academic year – is scheduled for Tuesday, August 27 at 10:50am in Si Melby. Members of faculty and staff are invited to form a clapping tunnel to welcome students. If you plan to be in the clapping tunnel, you may wear regalia or Auggie gear. Line up is scheduled for 10:20am along 71/2 th Street between Murphy Square and Anderson Music Hall. Also, a gentle reminder to seasoned Augsburg faculty and staff, consider inviting those who are new or newer to our community to join you in attending. If you are new faculty or staff or have never attended this before, it can be intimidating to know where and how to attend.

University Events has been working hard to launch a new request form for all events and meeting reservations. So that all requests can be saved in the same place, it is essential that faculty and staff use this form to submit all requests regardless of whether your event is basic or more complicated. Please note that if your event requires any special set up, catering, AV requests, etc. we require at least 15 business days (but more time is strongly recommended to ensure your event is a success). The new form, as well as all resources for planning your event, can be found at https://sites.augsburg.edu/events/
If you have trouble submitting the form, please screenshot the issue and email it to events@augsburg.edu so that we can look into fixing the issue.

Smith Foundry will be closing its doors for good this Thursday, September 15th! This milestone is only possible thanks to the dedicated residents and allies of Little Earth and East Phillips who have fought tirelessly for generations against Smith Foundry and other industries that pollute our neighborhood.
Come celebrate this incredible feat at Cedar Field Park, Friday, August 16th from 5:30-8:30. We will have food, music, speakers, and art!

Save the date! Imagine Cedarfest, September 8 @ 11:00 am – 5:00 pm
Imagine Cedarfest is a big, family-friendly block party for neighborhood connection and community organization. This event is a fantastic way to experience artists, musicians, and local businesses from the neighborhood and imagine a better future together.
When the Minnesota Highway Commission (now the Minnesota Department of Transportation or MnDOT) routed and constructed I-94 through the urban core of the Twin Cities in the ’60s, it destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses and displaced thousands. Now, as MnDOT evaluates options for the highway’s future, we have the opportunity to influence one of the biggest policy decisions in decades.
BONUS! Got a Weinie Dog?! Start training now and register for the Weinie Dog Race!!!
This is the second annual Wienery Wiener and Wiener-Wannabe Dog Race. This will take place on Sunday September 8th in front of the Wienery during the Imagine Cedarfest event.
We will see how many registrants we get. If we have enough “pure” dachsunds, we will run a separate race just for wiener dogs. Otherwise, we will group dogs by size to try to keep things fair. We may also choose to run multiple heats.
Register for the race here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScvJUYs5TQ8SSH0wWs62wwxmS5FeJYjI4ASS6GHyQKTA_d1UA/viewform

July 16 marks the second anniversary of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline! Help us celebrate by taking action for 988!
Please contact your members of Congress in support of three key policy bills that will help ensure that anyone struggling with a mental health, substance use, or suicide crisis is connected to local support and services in a timely manner. Our key bills are:
Improving Mental Health Access for Students Act (S.1236/H.R.2802) to require colleges and universities to include contact information for the 988 Lifeline, Crisis Text Line, and a campus mental health center on student identification cards and on their websites. Making it easy for students to find and share the 988 Lifeline number will improve access to lifesaving crisis resources and destigmatize reaching out for help
Local 988 Response Act (S.3444/H.R.4974) to connect people contacting 988 to services in their own state as quickly and safely as possible, while protecting privacy. Connecting people to a crisis center near their physical location—a process known as georouting—improves access to local, life-saving services.
CONNECT Act (H.R.6928) to establish grant funding to support follow-up services for individuals who receive suicide prevention and crisis intervention services. Providing follow-up services, such as phone calls, mental health appointments, or information about mental health resources significantly reduces the likelihood of suicide.
Together, we can ensure a robust and reimagines 988 system

In 2019 a truck hit the pedestrian bridge over I-94 near the Augsburg campus, damaging it beyond repair. A temporary bridge was installed at that time. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) is now in the process of planning and designing a permanent bridge. MNDOT is hosting a “pop-up” engagement session near the bridge this Friday, July 12, from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM to gather input about the features that residents and workers in the area would like to see incorporated in the design for the new bridge. Look for the tables on the Augsburg side of the bridge, near Lot B. You can also share feedback about the bridge project by completing the online survey found on the MNDOT project page (see link below).

Our Streets will present the findings of the Reimagining I-94 report, which evaluated possibilities for restoring part of the interstate into a community boulevard with new affordable housing, local businesses and parks.

What if we told you that this year, you’re not just getting ONE assessment presentation, but THREE TIMES the excitement for the same low, low price of zero dollars? Well, hold on to your tams and tassels, fellow faculty members, because this Wednesday, May 8th from 1 – 2:45pm in Oren 200 we’re hosting a series of presentations and discussions revolving around the assessment and program review work that was accomplished by programs, departments, and institutionally:
1. QR Assessment Results (1pm – 1:35pm): This year, the Assessment Committee collected data on Quantitative Reasoning from hundreds of students across a wide range of courses. During this session, we’ll use a new interactive PowerBI dashboard to examine emerging themes in this dataset, including the amount of mathematical and quantitative foundational coursework students experience, math placement scores, self-reflective assessments of their own skills and supporting experiences, and their performance on a short measure of applied problem solving skills.
2. Departmental Assessment Showcase (1:35 – 2:10pm): Departments and programs annually assess student learning and experience within their own curricular offerings. Join us for a cross-disciplinary showcase of some of the most impressive and creative approaches to assessment. As in previous years, this showcase is a great opportunity to draw inspiration from methods and approaches used by others on campus, and to learn more about the skills and backgrounds of our students.
3. Program Review Showcase (2:10 – 2:45): Do you have an upcoming program review? In this “showcase” session we will cover the basics of the program review process and hear from program directors and department chairs who recently completed an external review or are currently preparing for a review.
RSVP to this or any of the amazing Days in May events at the link below!

Weaving the Past, Present, and Future of 2511 E. Franklin Avenue, Saturday, April 27
Augsburg University recently announced an agreement to sell the property to the Somali Museum of Minnesota to develop a permanent museum facility and cultural center on the former Bethany Lutheran Church site at 2511 E. Franklin Avenue.
Augsburg has worked with Redesign to identify a financially sustainable, community-serving use for the property that contributes to the vitality of the East Franklin corridor. During the 2023 legislative session, the Somali Museum was approved for state funding to advance the project.
Neighbors and community members are invited to attend a community gathering about the past, present, and future of 2511 East Franklin Avenue on Saturday, April 27, from 12:30 PM – 3:30 PM at Matthews Recreation Center (2318 29th Ave. S). Please join us to learn about the Somali Museum and its vision for the site. Participants will be invited to share stories about the site’s history and place in Seward.
For questions about the gathering, contact krista@redesigninc.org.

Mark your calendars for a “bon voyage” celebration that we will hold in the learning commons on the first floor on Friday, May 3 from 2pm to 5pm.
The library will see three retirements at the end of May: Mary Hollerich, Mike Bloomberg, and Karen Alexander. We want to celebrate their combined 38 years of service to Augsburg, as well as say a fond farewell to our upcoming student graduates.
This celebration will be potluck style with book-themed dishes where puns are welcome (for example, “Olives or Twix,” “Infinite Chex,” “Curious Gruyère,” etc.) You’re welcome to bring something to share with or without a pun–or just yourselves! Stop by whenever you like.
