This year as Opening Convocation is back and so are several traditions! What staff and faculty need to know to participate in opening convocation:

The Clapping Tunnel: Faculty and staff are invited to form two lines down 7 ½ Street by Murphy Square.
Arrive 10:30 a.m. or earlier.
Please wear your regalia or Auggie gear.
In case of rain please line up on both sides of the Si Melby lobby.
Cyndi Berg will be standing at 7 ½ Street in case faculty or staff have any questions.

10:05 a.m. Student line up – two lines down 22nd Ave in both directions
10:30 a.m. Faculty/Staff Line Up
10:40 a.m. Processional Begins
11:00 a.m. Convocation Begins in Si Melby Gym

Calling Artists: Donate Nature Art to Roberts Bird Sanctuary’s Upcoming Tiny Art Auction

Friends of Roberts Bird Sanctuary is partnering with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to add an observation deck to the Roberts visitor shelter. We are raising funds this summer with the goal to complete construction after fall migration.

This observation deck will help make Roberts Bird Sanctuary more accessible to people of all abilities.

Obituary and Funeral Arrangements for Emily Suhrhoff Onken

A celebration of the life of Emily Suhrhoff Onken will take place at 2 p.m. this Sunday, August 14, at Bradshaw Funeral Home at 3131 Minnehaha Ave S., Minneapolis, with visitation one hour beforehand. The service will also be livestreamed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to P.E.A.S.E. Academy, StepUP, Narcotics Anonymous, Eagle Brook Church, or other organizations helping those with mental illness or addiction.

About this event
Are you a former speech and debate competitor? Or perhaps you always wished you had the chance? Come hear about the MN Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University that provides academic competitive debate programming for over 1,000 students in the Twin Cities metro area and how you can get involved. There are lots of ways to be part of our community, even if you don’t have the time to coach or judge at tournaments!

Enjoy a drink and snacks at Sociable Cider Werks (on us!), and learn how you can get involved. This is our second event to get our Advocates for Debate Board initiative off the ground. This time, our focus is on celebrating the Minnesota speech and debate community while creating greater local connections.

Join us and connect with leaders and passionate community members from various fields like legal, business, education, non-profit, and public service. We all have the same goal; to empower and educate students through the transformative process of debate.

This venue is friendly to people of all ages (with adult supervision) and to well-trained dogs!

Global Perspectives at Your Table? Host New International Students

A new semester is just around the corner, and luckily we are expecting NEW international students to join us this Fall Semester—representing countries like South Korea, Ethiopia, China, Egypt, South Africa and Norway to name a few!

And guess what? We are almost back to normal numbers for international students: 18 new incoming degree seekers, 5 transfer students, and about 11 exchange students. AMAZING!

As we collaboratively welcome this group, we plan for different experiences including a dinner potentially hosted by you—our faculty and staff members—in your home.

These events create a space for our new students to connect directly with members of our community, AND the dinner provides a time for you to learn about the incoming international students and their goals at Augsburg. It’s really a win-win situation!

Date: Wednesday, August 24, 2022
Time: Pick up at 5 p.m. with a return to campus around 7 p.m.

We ask that our hosts pick up students from campus and return them once dinner is completed.

Catherina Kipper Open House – TOMORROW

Catherina Kipper, URGO’s Prehealth Professions Specialist, will be returning to the University of MN, having accepted a position as an Assistant Director of Advising in the College of Liberal Arts. In the seven plus years that Catherina worked at Augsburg she established a stellar prehealth science advising program and assisted countless students and alums with their applications and interviews to various prehealth science programs. She also served as the advisor to the newly created and active Pre-Dentistry and Pre-PA clubs.

Students sought Catherina out because she provided honest and thorough advice about how to be a competitive prehealth applicant. She is particularly gifted as a writing coach, painstakingly reading multiple drafts of statements and secondary applications, always helping students find their own voices. Because of her commitment and knowledge, more Augsburg students and alums gained admissions to prehealth programs and more of them had multiple offers.

All of her staff and faculty colleagues immediately noticed her professionalism, deep knowledge of the health professions, dedication to student advancement, cross cultural competency and generous nature. As the only other staff member in URGO, Catherina accepted multiple responsibilities to ensure that the office functioned with a high quality of service–always her standard.

We thank her for her dedicated service to Augsburg and wish her the best in her new position.

Ukrainian Plays – Fundraiser for Ukraine

Staged readings of Ukrainian plays written since the Russian invasion. A fundraiser for Ukraine.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, theaters across the globe have been providing staged readings of Ukrainian plays to show solidarity with the Ukrainian people and raise awareness of their plight. Augsburg University’s MFA Program joins this effort on July 22, when, with special assistance from Lisa Channer, the Artistic Director at Theater Novi Most, seven short plays — all written by Ukrainians since the Russian invasion — will be performed at Augsburg’s Tjornhom-Nelson Theater. With the MFA Program scheduled to be in attendance, only 35 tickets are available to the public.

The Greater Minnesota Council of Churches and the West Bank Athletic Club are excited to present international artist-in-residence, Sharma Boy, performing for the first time in North America. This one-of-a-kind project, which will include youth workshops and two live, ticketed performances, is a celebration of our community and part of the 2022 WBAC Summer Festival and soccer tournament.

The Christensen Center for Vocation is so excited to announce that the application to attend The Threshold Book Envisioning event is live!

The Threshold: Book Envisioning Event
When: November 4-6, 2022

What: A gathering of young adults to begin to identify our deepest held concerns, hopes, and dreams for God’s church and distill them down into key themes we want the church to know as it moves from the present moment, into the future.

Participants’ lodging and food expenses will be covered. Travel expenses, including airfare or mileage, will be reimbursed to the participant after the gathering in the form of a check.

Come join the Environmental Stewardship Team and Augsburg Community Gardeners today from 12-1PM to learn more about the fruit growing in the garden. Mike Slinkard will share his knowledge about growing fruit and student Environmental Stewardship Coordinators will point out the edible fruit in the garden from ripening strawberries, to raspberry and apple fall favorites, and the hidden secret of serviceberries by the Hagfors benches. Learn about the garden, meet gardeners and ESC student interns, and enjoy some time outside with the greater Augsburg Community! No garden expertise and experience necessary! Cost is free of course. We will meet by the Hagfors doors that exit to the garden.

Weather Advisory: This workshop is going to be held when there is an Excessive Heat Warning in effect. Portions of the workshop will be held outside, but we will do some parts inside to escape the heat. It is recommended that you dress appropriately and to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. Water and rest breaks will be taken.

Minnesota Private College Week is June 21-24: Guests Parking in Lot D

Admission will be hosting many prospective students on campus for Minnesota Private College Week, June 21-24. High school students will be coming to campus for a variety of sessions and tours each day. Please be mindful of guests on campus. The event will primarily take place in the Hagfors Center, with guest parking in Lot D.

If you typically park in lot D, expect there to be increased congestion from 8 am to 5 pm. Lot D permit holders may contact admissions1@augsburg.edu or stop by our office in the Christensen Center for a complimentary parking pass for the U of M lot or Metro bus pass to use for these four days.

While no single societal sector can disrupt the status quo on its own, innovative businesses and courageous leaders can lead the way. No matter your racial identity, no matter your role or level in your organization, you can do SOMETHING. We don’t profess to know what that “something” is for you but in this session, you will learn two actionable tools to uncover it.

Riverside Innovation Hub’s “Threshold Envisioning Event” Application Opens on June 15

The Riverside Innovation Hub is endeavoring on a book project that seeks to amplify the voices of young adults. We will be gathering to distill key themes and then select Young Adult authors, and scholar co-authors will write chapters about each theme, culminating in a book! Our first event will be a gathering of 50 young adults for an envisioning event.
Our application for the Threshold Envisioning Event will be live on June 15th.
