Did you know that the Augsburg University Archives have thousands of searchable documents, photographs, and recordings available online? As spring semester begins, and sesquicentennial projects continue to take shape, visit https://archives.augsburg.edu/ to explore digitized resources that are available for viewing and downloading.

The Archives include: issues of the Echo since the 1890s; Alumni magazines dating back to the 1930s; yearbooks published between 1916 and 2010; photographs of campus buildings dating back to the 1870s; music; speeches; recordings of commencements dating from the late 1950s to the present; and more!

Upcoming additions will include every A-mail issued between 2005 and the start of this year, a collection of historic films dating from the late 1930s to the early 1970s, and thousands of athletics photographs dating from the early 1970s to the early 2000s.

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2019 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2020 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2020. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2020.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2019, in the following areas:
1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
2. Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
-are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
-can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.

The Music Department invites all staff to join them in creating a new Music-Theater piece about, for, and with people who have been or are currently a part of the Augsburg University Community (http://engage.augsburg.edu/sesquicentennialmusical/).

To gather material, the music department is hosting Story Circles, facilitated by theater professionals Leah Cooper of Wonderlust Productions and Aaron Gabriel of Interact Theater. A Story Circle is an opportunity to gather in groups to tell stories, write down thoughts, and share experiences about Augsburg. If you don’t feel like sharing, you can just listen. Nobody’s story or experiences will be used in the play directly (like a documentary); they’ll be blended together into a fictional story, protecting the privacy of those who share.

They are hosting a staff story circle on January 17th from 1-2:30pm in the Augsburg Room (you are not required to stay the entire time if you are unable to). Please attend if you are interested and able. RSVP to Sonja Thompson at thompso2@augsburg.edu.

No experience? No problem. We train judges at the beginning of every tournament.
What Judges Do:
• Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
• Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
• Choose the winner of each debate!

Coyotes in WY and other western states have no protection at all … everything goes. We also have anecdotal evidence that hunters in Montana enjoy chasing and running over coyotes with their recreational vehicles.

‘Yote Whackin’ includes coyote killing contests with snowmobiles.

Here’s a blurb for Amail:
Professor Emily Schilling and senior Biology major Holly Kundel just had an article published in the International Journal of Odonatology. The paper is a review of the reproductive habitat requirements of a rare and threatened North American dragonfly species, the spatterdock darner. Holly has been conducting research in Dr. Schilling’s lab since the summer after her first year at Augsburg, and she is currently applying to graduate programs in Ecology and Conservation Science. Dr. Schilling continues to pursue research questions related to dragonflies common to naturally fishless lakes and ponds in Minnesota. Earn Service Hours Using Your Skills as a Volunteer Debate Judge

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, needs a few excellent folks to judge middle school debates this spring.

No experience? No problem. We train judges at the beginning of every tournament.
What Judges Do:
• Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
• Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
• Choose the winner of each debate!

Opportunities to Volunteer:

Volunteers will judge two rounds of debate from 3:30 PM – 7:30 PM.

The Music Department invites all staff to join them in creating a new Music-Theater piece about, for, and with people who have been or are currently a part of the Augsburg University Community (http://engage.augsburg.edu/sesquicentennialmusical/).

To gather material, the music department is hosting Story Circles, facilitated by theater professionals Leah Cooper of Wonderlust Productions and Aaron Gabriel of Interact Theater. A Story Circle is an opportunity to gather in groups to tell stories, write down thoughts, and share experiences about Augsburg. If you don’t feel like sharing, you can just listen. Nobody’s story or experiences will be used in the play directly (like a documentary); they’ll be blended together into a fictional story, protecting the privacy of those who share.

They are hosting a staff story circle on January 17th from 1-2:30pm in the Augsburg Room (you are not required to stay the entire time if you are unable to). Please attend if you are interested and able. RSVP to Sonja Thompson at thompso2@augsburg.edu.

The Newcomer Award recognizes a staff person who has made a significant impact on campus life in a short amount time. Staff who have been at Augsburg for 2 years or less are eligible to receive this award.

This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2019, in the following areas:
1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
2. Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…

The Augsburg University and Luther Seminary Editorial Style Guide is a collection of best practices to keep communication clear and consistent. Because Augsburg and Luther marketing and communication staff work together through a shared services agreement, this style guide is designed for use at both institutions.

Bookmark the marketing webpage to refer to the style guide when you write on behalf of the university.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, needs a few excellent folks to judge middle school debates this spring.

No experience? No problem. We train judges at the beginning of every tournament.
What Judges Do:
• Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
• Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
• Choose the winner of each debate!

Opportunities to Volunteer:

Volunteers will judge two rounds of debate from 3:30 PM – 7:30 PM.

Students, staff and supervisors should ensure you are able access and approve time around the holiday break so everyone is paid appropriately and timely.
• The first pay date of 2019 is 01/04/2019, this is for hours worked 12/16 – 12/29.
• Hours worked should be logged daily.
• The time entry deadline is still 2pm Monday, December 31st. This is a holiday and all time cards will be submitted automatically by the system. Unless working the weekend, all hours should be logged and submitted Friday, December 28th.
• Supervisors will need to approve the time cards by 10am on Wednesday, January 2nd – extended due to the holiday on Tuesday, January 1st. This will create a shorter processing time, so it is appreciated if all time is approved by the deadline of 10am. Time can also be approved any time after 2pm on Monday prior to the deadline. Time not approved could result in your employee NOT being paid timely.
