Students can now apply for the 2018-19 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship Program at Augsburg University. This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2019, in the following areas:

1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
2. Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
-are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
-can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.

Please note that students from traditionally underrepresented groups in science and mathematics fields are especially encouraged to apply. No applicant shall be denied consideration based on race, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, or ability.

The Phillips Scholars Program recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to make life better for those with unmet needs. Applicants are challenged to think creatively and become community-service leaders by developing a project to meet an unmet need in Minnesota communities. Phillips Scholars receive scholarships during their junior and senior years, and a stipend to complete a project during the summer between junior and senior year.

This preliminary application is used to select two finalists from Augsburg University who will then develop a full proposal to be submitted to the Minnesota Private College Council for the scholarship. This will include a 5-7 page project proposal, official transcript, and 3 letters of recommendation. Staff members of the Sabo Center will help finalist complete their applications.

You must be a sophomore during the 2018-2019 school year to apply.

The Augsburg Bookstore has spring semester Metro Passes available for sale.

The Metro Transit passes are good Jan. 1 – May 31, 2019.
Augsburg University is continuing the subsidy for passes – price is $115.00 (regular price is $165/semester).

Students can put the Spring semester pass on their bookstore account once it is open – please be sure to register your pass online with Metro Transit. If you lose your pass, the replacement cost is $5.00. Otherwise, you’d have to pass the full pass price for a replacement

Augsburg’s virtual gratitude jar will be open until the end of the day today, December 21st, for all Auggies to share what they are grateful for–big or small. Statements of gratitude made here will be shared at the start of 2019 through Augsburg Wellbeing (hint, hint: we’re re-branding!). This will give us a moment to reflect on the good, and feel grateful for what was, while looking forward to 2019. Gratitude statements will be shared anonymously unless otherwise requested by the statement writer.

Thanks to A’viands Food Service for Late Night Breakfast which included traditional favorites and delicacies – nearly 400 students enjoyed great food and great socializing (and some singing – thanks KAUG!).

The serving team included Augsburg President Pribbenow, Day Student Government President Brandon Williams, faculty and staff Marc Isaacson, Jennifer Simon, Diane Pike, Ruby Murillo, Ryan Hoye, Melissa Lee, Dianne Detloff, Ben Smethhurst, and Doug Rosenberg.

Beginning January 1st, vending machines will no longer offer bottled water. Please reach out to environmentalstewardship@augsburg.edu with questions, comments, and ideas moving forward.

Sparkling and other “enhanced” water will continue to be available around campus.

Minneapolis tap water, which consistently meets or exceeds safe drinking water standards, is available in drinking fountains for FREE! Students who need a refillable water bottle can pick one up at the Campus Cupboard (see hours: http://inside.augsburg.edu/foodshelf/), thanks the Environmental Action Committee’s Water Bottle Share program.

An article by Dr. Ann Lutterman-Aguilar titled “A Protestant Feminist Perspective in Response to Our Current Context of Violence” appears in the latest issue of the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion. Ann is the site director of the Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) program in Mexico.

This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2019, in the following areas:

1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
2. Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
-are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
-can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.

Apply to be a Phillips Scholar!

The Phillips Scholars Program recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to make life better for those with unmet needs. Applicants are challenged to think creatively and become community-service leaders by developing a project to meet an unmet need in Minnesota communities. Phillips Scholars receive scholarships during their junior and senior years, and a stipend to complete a project during the summer between junior and senior year.

This preliminary application is used to select two finalists from Augsburg University who will then develop a full proposal to be submitted to the Minnesota Private College Council for the scholarship. This will include a 5-7 page project proposal, official transcript, and 3 letters of recommendation. Staff members of the Sabo Center will help finalist complete their applications.

You must be a sophomore during the 2018-2019 school year to apply.

There are several unscrupulous businesses out there who attempt to sell you outrageously priced toner over the phone. We have already gotten a call from someone (mis)representing themselves as our printer vendor – Marco, and referencing our fleet of Sharp copiers.

They may start with asking you what is the model or ID# of the copier near your desk. They may say they have extra stock of the toner you need or the price is due to increase. They may offer to ship you a toner on trial. Regardless of what they say, DO NOT give them any information. All you need to know is that you get toner for your copier or printer by either calling the Copy Center at extension x1054 or emailing at copyctr@augsburg.edu.

You will NEVER need to purchase toner for machines in your area.

A quick way to ditch these “toner phoners” is to tell them you would like to transfer them to the person in the organization who purchases toner – they will hang up before you can transfer them!

Statements of gratitude made here will be shared at the start of 2019 through Augsburg Wellbeing (hint, hint: we’re re-branding!). This will give us a moment to reflect on the good, and feel grateful for what was, while looking forward to 2019. Based off of the information/opinions gathered by Augsburg Day Student Government (ADSG) representatives from a panel discussion, anonymous surveys, communication with student leaders, and information/opinions gathered by ADSG representatives, ADSG voted on December 12th to pass a resolution with the following points.

ADSG on behalf of the Day Student Body call on Augsburg University to:

1. Establish a full-time Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) with substantial administrative power, encourage collaboration between the Multicultural Student Services office (MSS) and the CDO, and increase MSS staff.
2. Include the CDO and/or MSS in all future disciplinary meetings or meetings involving restorative justice methods.
3. Review and then require cultural competency training for all staff and faculty with some form of continued learning education.
4. Restructure the Augsburg Seminar course to include cultural competency as a pillar of the program.
5. Develop a definitive, clear, and concise definition of “Academic Freedom” within the faculty handbook that includes a statement about ensuring the safety of students and doing no intentional harm.
6. Review the tenure process; Bias and Discrimination Reports need to have an impact on the tenure and promotion processes.
7. Student diversity should be reflected within the hiring process of faculty and administration; the candidates should reflect the diversity of the student body for which the candidates would serve.
8. Review the course evaluations; questions on whether a student’s cultures and identities were respected by the professor within the course should be added.

Students can now apply for the 2018-19 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship Program at Augsburg University. This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2019, in the following areas:
1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
2. Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

This action plan drafted by members of Augsburg Day Student Government (ADSG) summarizes the student feedback that was gathered during a panel-led discussion held on November 29th titled “What’s Next?” by ADSG.

The panel-led discussion consisted of the Student Body President facilitating discussion and six other representatives of ADSG responding to ideas and interests presented by students. Students who were in attendance voiced their expectations of ADSG and the university’s administration.

This document has four sections: what feedback has come from students, what is currently being addressed by non-ADSG parties, what changes ADSG wants to see occur, and ADSG actions/communications/timeline.

There is also a link to a survey that students may fill out with any further comments, feedback, ideas or concerns.

Take Documentary History and Theory and make Wednesday’s this Spring a movie night! This course studies the history of film’s nonfiction art form, as well as the theoretical methods of engaging the world through a lens. Through the study of selected documentaries, students will identify and analyze the filmmaker’s point of view and the methods used to deliver the message.

The course is offered in Communication Studies, Film, and New Media. It fulfills a Humanities LAF.

Sparkling and other “enhanced” water will continue to be available around campus.

Minneapolis tap water, which consistently meets or exceeds safe drinking water standards, is available in drinking fountains for FREE! Students who need a refillable water bottle can pick one up at the Campus Cupboard (see hours: http://inside.augsburg.edu/foodshelf/), thanks the Environmental Action Committee’s Water Bottle Share program.

In preparation for year-end 2018, we ask each employee to review the items below and contact us with any changes or updates to your personal information that we have on file.

1) Verify the Name and Social Security Number on your pay stub.

In order for the Social Security Administration to properly post your earnings, the name on your pay stub must match the name on your social security card. If your name has changed legally (marriage, divorce, etc.) and it does not match your pay stub, please submit a copy of a social security card displaying the correct name to Human Resources to update your employment record.

To help protect your identity, your social security number (SSN) is not normally printed on your pay stub. We are including it on the 12/07/18 and 12/21/18 pay stubs so the SSN may be verified. Please take a look at your pay stub and verify that the correct SSN is listed. If the Social Security Number on your pay stub is incorrect, please notify HR/Payroll immediately.

2) Verify the address on your pay stub

W-2 forms will be mailed and available online by January 31, 2019, however we do request that you review the address listed on your pay stub to ensure we have your correct address on file. If address corrections are needed please contact Human Resources. HR@augsburg.edu

3) Check your tax withholdings

The tax withholdings you are currently claiming are printed on the bottom left section of your pay stub. If you wish to change your tax withholdings, please complete a new federal W-4 form and submit to the Payroll office.

Join the Environmental Stewardship Committee for our first ever waste audit. A waste audit is (also called a waste sort or trash audit) is a way to assess what is in our campus garbage and what could be diverted from the waste stream through recycling, composting, or reduction. We will focus primarily on the organics recycling collected from Christensen Center. Student clubs can receive $10/hour for every individual who comes and volunteers.
