Students can now apply for the 2018-19 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship Program at Augsburg University. This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2019, in the following areas:
1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
2. Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
-are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
-can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.

Please note that students from traditionally underrepresented groups in science and mathematics fields are especially encouraged to apply. No applicant shall be denied consideration based on race, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, or ability.

Deadline for application: Friday, January 18, 2019.

This action plan drafted by members of Augsburg Day Student Government (ADSG) summarizes the student feedback that was gathered during a panel-led discussion held on November 29th titled “What’s Next?” by ADSG.

The panel-led discussion consisted of the Student Body President facilitating discussion and six other representatives of ADSG responding to ideas and interests presented by students. Students who were in attendance voiced their expectations of ADSG and the university’s administration.

This document has four sections: what feedback has come from students, what is currently being addressed by non-ADSG parties, what changes ADSG wants to see occur, and ADSG actions/communications/timeline.

There is also a link to a survey that students may fill out with any further comments, feedback, ideas or concerns.

Take Documentary History and Theory and make Wednesday’s this Spring a movie night! This course studies the history of film’s nonfiction art form, as well as the theoretical methods of engaging the world through a lens. Through the study of selected documentaries, students will identify and analyze the filmmaker’s point of view and the methods used to deliver the message.

The course is offered in Communication Studies, Film, and New Media. It fulfills a Humanities LAF.

In preparation for year-end 2018, we ask each employee to review the items below and contact us with any changes or updates to your personal information that we have on file.

1) Verify the Name and Social Security Number on your pay stub.

In order for the Social Security Administration to properly post your earnings, the name on your pay stub must match the name on your social security card. If your name has changed legally (marriage, divorce, etc.) and it does not match your pay stub, please submit a copy of a social security card displaying the correct name to Human Resources to update your employment record.

To help protect your identity, your social security number (SSN) is not normally printed on your pay stub. We are including it on the 12/07/18 and 12/21/18 pay stubs so the SSN may be verified. Please take a look at your pay stub and verify that the correct SSN is listed. If the Social Security Number on your pay stub is incorrect, please notify HR/Payroll immediately.

2) Verify the address on your pay stub

W-2 forms will be mailed and available online by January 31, 2019, however we do request that you review the address listed on your pay stub to ensure we have your correct address on file. If address corrections are needed please contact Human Resources. HR@augsburg.edu

3) Check your tax withholdings

The tax withholdings you are currently claiming are printed on the bottom left section of your pay stub. If you wish to change your tax withholdings, please complete a new federal W-4 form and submit to the Payroll office.

A waste audit is (also called a waste sort or trash audit) is a way to assess what is in our campus garbage and what could be diverted from the waste stream through recycling, composting, or reduction. We will focus primarily on the organics recycling collected from Christensen Center. Student clubs can receive $10/hour for every individual who comes and volunteers. We need approximately 10 volunteers each hour to come help. SIGN UP HERE!

Congratulations to Michael Wentzel, Associate Professor of Chemistry, on being selected as one of this year’s faculty participants in the 2019 seminar on Teaching Vocational Exploration. Augsburg Central Services is switching the way that outgoing mail is handled. We are retiring the mail meter machine and starting to use a presort mail service. This brings with it some small changes that we would ask you to observe if you are sending out mail.

– If your mail is not sealed please bring it to shipping/receiving or have it ready for pickup with the flaps down and not nested.
– All mail has to have a complete “To Address” in the center of the envelope and a complete “Return Address” in the upper left of the envelope. If it does not have both of these it may be returned to you to complete.
– Please include the cost center either on a post-it note attached to your mail or somewhere on the piece (top piece if multiple) that will not interfere with postage (upper right) or addresses.
– All mail must be in shipping/receiving before 3:30 to be processed the same day. This is a little later than it used to be.

The book addresses the social, economic and environmental costs of dams and experts call for a critical reassessment of the approach to these kinds of structures.

We are deeply saddened to share the news that Jeroy Carlson ’48 passed away yesterday. Jeroy spent more than 60 years at Augsburg. He was a student, parent, grandparent, volunteer, alumni director, and a senior development officer for Augsburg. Known as “Mr. Augsburg,” he spent much of his life inspiring, connecting, and mentoring Auggies.

We are now in the holiday season! This means that the Shipping & Receiving Department will be getting very busy until January.

If you order a package and have it sent to the University please observe the following guidelines as we have fairly limited storage space.

Faculty & Staff
-We will still try to deliver all staff packages the same day that they arrive although there may be some occurrences where we are unable to do this.
-You may have your personal package sent to the University if you would like but we would ask if you would attempt to pick up the packages as they arrive, we will still attempt to deliver all packages, as we don’t know what is personal or not, but picking up will ease our burden.

Students
-Try to make sure you pick up any packages the same day that you receive the email.
-You can have someone else pick up your package, if you are unable to make it within the open hours of shipping/receiving, if you email mailship@augsburg.edu with their name, they MUST bring their ID (one pick-up per email).

The Midco Scholars Program is a partnership between Midcontinent Communications (Midco) and Augsburg University which provides opportunities for underrepresented students to explore a career in business/IT and gain relevant work experience. This semester, up to 4 students will be selected to become Midco Scholars. Each Scholar will take part in monthly professional development workshops, receive a $2,500 scholarship, and will also have the opportunity to apply for a competitive full-time Summer 2019 internship with Midco, either in their Sioux Falls, SD or Edina, MN offices. (Internships will more likely take place in Sioux Falls, so applicants should be available to live in Sioux Falls for the summer – housing is available).

Ideal candidates for the Midco Scholars Program will:
-Be a Junior in good standing at Augsburg (strong applications from Sophomores will be considered)
-Have a major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Data Analytics or other business related fields
-Be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of a summer internship and provide documents to verify work authorization

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities.

We’re looking for debate judges and hospitality volunteers for its upcoming high school debate tournaments.

No debate experience? No problem. We train volunteers at every tournament.

What Judges Do:

● Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
● Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
● Choose the winner of each debate!

We are responding to the feedback gathered at the “We Are Listening” session on Monday.

Students, in response to being heard, to the value of circles, and to not having time to talk during the chapel time, we would like to invite you to a listening session from 2:00-3:30 in East Commons, today, Tuesday Nov. 13. We will be there to listen. We can decide together at the outset of that session whether or not those attending want a facilitated circle or an open mic time with agreed upon guidelines.

There are also steps being taken to organize “A Day of Action” that is collaboratively planned. Further communication about planning sessions will follow in the days ahead.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities.

We’re looking for debate judges for upcoming high school tournaments on 11/17 and 12/7.

No debate experience? No problem. We train volunteers at every tournament.

What Judges Do:

● Watch rounds and evaluate teams on logic, argumentation, and public speaking.
● Provide written feedback and assign points to each debater.
● Choose the winner of each debate!

Opportunities to Volunteer:

● November 17th: UMBrooks (U of M, West Bank)
● December 7th & 8th: UDL Championship (WTMS, St. Paul)

We have open evening shifts on Fridays and open morning or afternoon shifts on Saturdays.

The Midco Scholars Program is a partnership between Midcontinent Communications (Midco) and Augsburg University which provides opportunities for underrepresented students to explore a career in business/IT and gain relevant work experience. This semester, up to 4 students will be selected to become Midco Scholars. Each Scholar will take part in monthly professional development workshops, receive a $2,500 scholarship, and will also have the opportunity to apply for a competitive full-time Summer 2019 internship with Midco, either in their Sioux Falls, SD or Edina, MN offices. (Internships will more likely take place in Sioux Falls, so applicants should be available to live in Sioux Falls for the summer – housing is available).

Ideal candidates for the Midco Scholars Program will:
-Be a Junior in good standing at Augsburg (anticipated graduation in Dec 2019 or May 2020)
-Have a major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Data Analytics or other business related fields
-Be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of a summer internship and provide documents to verify work authorization

Underrepresented students, including students of color, low-income (Pell Grant eligible/Dream Grant eligible), and/or first generation college students are highly encouraged to apply.

June 2-5, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) will offer the second of two institutes focused on Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts. This Institute is intended to address major issues that drive unrest on today’s campus, including protests directed at public policy, social inequity, bias, and identity that sometimes become disruptive or even violent. The Provost’s Office is hoping to send a team from Augsburg and has been working with a few faculty and staff on the application. Applications must include a proposal that outlines how we intend to use the experience, if we are selected to participate, on our campus. While we can only send four people, we want the proposal to reflect the broader interests and commitments of the community. The Provost invites members of the community to join her for a conversation on how this institute might be used to advance our commitments to inclusion, equity, and cultural competence at Augsburg.

A meeting is scheduled for TODAY, Nov. 8, from 12:00-1:00 pm in LIN 301. All are welcome — please feel free to bring your lunch! If Augsburg is accepted to participate in the Institute, additional open meetings will be held throughout the Spring, as we want the team’s work to help advance our collective goals.

Environmental Stewardship Committee (ESC) is a body committed to helping the University reach its goals. Its mission is to assist the governance structure of the University including: the President, all officers, staff, faculty and students in implementing best practices regarding environmental stewardship in both campus operations and curricular development.
