One individual who is inducted into the society will receive the Linda Schrempp Alberg Endowed Leadership Award, which has an award value of $500. Students will also be nominated for the Marina Christensen Justice Award, given out at Commencement. Registration for spring intramurals is now OPEN!! Registration will be open from now until next Wednesday, March 6th. Leagues will start the week of March.11th and run until April 18th. We will have volleyball, and basketball available this spring. Volleyball will be played on Monday nights, and basketball will be played on Thursday nights.

This will be your last chance to win an intramural championship for the year!

Nominations are now open for student commencement speaker. This year’s commencement ceremony focuses on the theme of Augsburg’s urban and global settings. Please nominate students who can represent the graduating students and speak on this theme at this year’s commencement ceremony at US Bank Stadium on Friday, May 10, 2019. Given that we will have one ceremony for all programs, nominations are welcome for graduates of any program, undergraduate or graduate.

During the month of March, shoppers at Seward Co-ops & Cafe may “round up” their grocery total as a donation to Soup for You Cafe at Bethany Lutheran (2511 Franklin Ave). These small donations help support the operations of Soup for You Cafe, serving the Seward/Cedar Riverside Community with free soup M-F, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. We strive to create a safe and welcoming space for all members of our communities. Prepare + Prosper’s free tax clinics opened on Saturday, January 26 and will run through April 15.

More than 550 volunteers will serve nearly 13,000 people with free tax preparation and financial services at nine locations in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Hopkins. Volunteers went through up to 20 hours of comprehensive education on the tax codes and new federal tax laws.

On Thursday, February 28th from 10:30-12:30 Homeward Bound representatives will be on campus in the lobby of the Christensen Center.

Homeward Bound serves children, adolescents and adults with a variety of disabilities, but we have the unique capacity of meeting the needs of those with the most severe and profound disabilities. Our direct support professionals, nurses, nurse care managers, supervisors and managers work together to provide respectful, dignified personal assistance and support to children and adults with disabilities.

Responsibilities include assisting people with daily living skills, meal preparation, medication administration, community activities and maintaining a clean, safe environment in an assigned group home. We do not require applicants to have experience. We have flexible scheduling so it is the perfect opportunity for students that are interested in healthcare.

Dear faculty and staff colleagues,

Finalists for the Dean of Arts & Sciences position will be on campus over the next two weeks, and I invite you to take advantage of the opportunities to meet each of these candidates. Your participation in the open sessions serves two important purposes: it ensures that we receive broad feedback from the community on each candidate and (just as importantly) a good showing at the open sessions helps build our candidates’ interest in joining our community. We want to send a positive message about who we are in order to recruit the best candidate as well as discern the best candidates for us. Your participation in the process is crucial to both aims.

Our three candidates will be on campus Mon., March 4, Wed., March 6, and Wed. March 13. All public presentations will be held from 2:00-3:00 pm in OGC 100 — faculty and staff are encouraged to attend as many presentations as possible.

Curriculum vitae will be shared one business day prior to each visit–please watch for a message from me, which will provide links to the candidate’s CV and to a feedback form. Those who meet the candidates are strongly encouraged to provide feedback on perceived strengths and weaknesses, using the feedback form provided. These forms will be available until noon of the day following the interview visit.

The search committee will review the feedback you share via the online forms prior to forwarding its final recommendations to me. I will review that feedback as well.

I wish to extend my gratitude and acknowledge the excellent work of the search committee in reviewing almost 100 applications, participating in zoom interviews with those from a very deep pool who were deemed most promising, and identifying the three finalists to bring to Augsburg for campus visits

Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.

In these programs you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Current students with sophomore or junior status who plan to study on campus all of the 2019-20 academic year are eligible to apply.

They are hiring faith-centered, college-aged young adults for all positions their 2019 Summer Camp in Annandale, MN (June 1-July 30). They offer overnight camps — 3 sessions for high school students, 3 sessions for middle-school students and 2 sessions for children in grades 3-6.

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 80 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on April 15. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) by March 5th (a mentor-approved abstract is required to register).

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2019 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2020 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2020. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2020.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

AYTI Mentors needed – apply this week for priority consideration! The Christensen Center for Vocation is looking for current students to serve as mentors for this summer’s Youth Theology Institute (AYTI).

The Augsburg Youth Theology Institute (AYTI) is a week-long experience for high school students to critically engage in theological inquiry and faith exploration on Augsburg’s campus. This year’s theme is Stewarding Creation in our Neighborhoods: Science and Theology in Action, so if you are passionate about how these work together, this year’s program is for you! Classroom learning, worship opportunities, urban exposure, and community building are all components of the program. An AYTI Mentor serves a vital role in the Youth Theology Institute by helping to implement programs and cultivate Christian community as faith leaders working with the high school youth participants. Underrepresented students in STEM can now apply for summer research under the NSF-funded MnDRIVE program.

To be eligible for the MnDRIVE program, students must:

-be a United States citizen or permanent resident
-be enrolled in an undergraduate STEM degree program
-self-identify as a minority or underrepresented group (Black, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific
Islander, Alaska Native)
-complete and submit all application materials by the deadline.

The MnDRIVE program represents a partnership between the Minnesota Discovery and Research Innovation Economy (MnDRIVE) initiative and the North Star STEM Alliance (NSSA) to provide summer research internship experiences to undergraduates. MnDRIVE has summer internship opportunities in four general research areas: Robotics, Global Food, Environment and Brain Conditions. Students should be available for research during Summer 2019 and have access to housing in the Twin Cities metro area. The NSSA provides $4,500 for the research opportunity.

The MnDRIVE application deadline is Monday, February 25th, 2019. Faculty reference letters are due Monday, March 4th.

SPACE MOUNTAIN: Astronomy in Hawaii (PHY 101)
May 13-27, 2019

During this 2-week program you will learn the physical and theoretical tools of astronomy, and the creative way these tools are employed to answer fundamental questions about the universe and our place in it. For decades, astronomers all over the globe have taken advantage of the superb atmospheric conditions afforded them on Hawai’i’s “Big Island” to gather the data to answer these profound questions. Now, it’s your turn.

+At Volcanoes National Park, you will see first-hand the energy source that keeps the Earth alive—our planet’s interior heat

Underrepresented students in STEM can now apply for summer research under the NSF-funded MnDRIVE program.

To be eligible for the MnDRIVE program, students must:

-be a United States citizen or permanent resident
-be enrolled in an undergraduate STEM degree program
-self-identify as a minority or underrepresented group (Black, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific
Islander, Alaska Native)
-complete and submit all application materials by the deadline.

The MnDRIVE program represents a partnership between the Minnesota Discovery and Research Innovation Economy (MnDRIVE) initiative and the North Star STEM Alliance (NSSA) to provide summer research internship experiences to undergraduates. MnDRIVE has summer internship opportunities in four general research areas: Robotics, Global Food, Environment and Brain Conditions. Students should be available for research during Summer 2019 and have access to housing in the Twin Cities metro area. The NSSA provides $4,500 for the research opportunity.

The MnDRIVE application deadline is Monday, February 25th, 2019. Faculty reference letters are due Monday, March 4th.

The Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC) is forming a new group focused on teaching and practicing skills for emotional wellbeing.

These will include:
Understanding and working with emotions (emotion regulation skills)
Mindfulness skills
Distress tolerance coping skills
Interpersonal effectiveness/assertiveness skills

The group will meet Wednesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 in the CWC office, starting February 13th.

The Christensen Center for Vocation is looking for current students to serve as mentors for this summer’s Youth Theology Institute (AYTI).

The Augsburg Youth Theology Institute (AYTI) is a week-long experience for high school students to critically engage in theological inquiry and faith exploration on Augsburg’s campus. This year’s theme is Stewarding Creation in our Neighborhoods: Science and Theology in Action, so if you are passionate about how these work together, this year’s program is for you! Classroom learning, worship opportunities, urban exposure, and community building are all components of the program. An AYTI Mentor serves a vital role in the Youth Theology Institute by helping to implement programs and cultivate Christian community as faith leaders working with the high school youth participants. Applications are now open for the 2018-2019 Augsburg Senior Leadership Society, which recognizes graduating seniors for their leadership contributions over the course of their tenure at Augsburg University. One individual who is inducted into the society will receive the Linda Schrempp Alberg Endowed Leadership Award, which has an award value of $500. Students will also be nominated for the Marina Christensen Justice Award, given out at Commencement.
