My name is Dean Harris, and I am a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Department at Augsburg University. I am conducting this study as partial fulfillment of my doctoral degree, with Dr. Patricia Hopkins-Smith as my advisor.

You are being invited to participate in a research study on investigating influences of intrapersonal factors on the relationship between casual sex and mental health. Our study focuses on experiences of casual sex in individuals who identify as single or recently single (i.e., have not been in a relationship longer than one month). As such, if you indicated you were in a relationship for longer than one month, you do not meet our study eligibility criteria. We respect and appreciate individuals in various types of relationships, including open or ethically non-monogamous ones, but our current study’s scope is limited to investigating casual sex in those who identify as single (or recently single). If you agree to this study, I will ask you to complete a survey via Qualtrics. This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. After completing all the survey questions, you will be invited, if you wish, to provide contact information to enter in the raffle to win one of three $50 gift card prizes, and/or emailed the results at the end of the study’s conclusion.

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2024 (graduating by May ‘26)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Camp Nenookaasi – located at East 24th Street and 13th Avenue South, Minneapolis – is a community based healing camp rooted in native practices & inclusive of all unsheltered relatives.

Some ways to help:
Call your council person and ask the city to provide porta potties and daily trash pick-up.
Daily trash pick-up: Given the camp’s size, trash pick-up needs to happen daily at a minimum. Currently, dedicated volunteers are hauling away 90% of the trash.

Volunteer: Join a morning kitchen shift or security shift. If you are new, volunteers will greet you at the door and work with you to train you in. We also need volunteers in the afternoons, to help do whatever is needed on a given day. And, we could even use volunteers today to help organize the kitchen storage area!

Contribute food and supplies: Keeping 150 people fed, protected from the elements, and safe requires constant supply runs. It would be exceptionally helpful to have more people dropping off food and supplies on a regular basis, such as peanut butter, jelly, bread, sugar, disposable hot cups (no lids needed), disposable plates, bowls, and paper napkins. If you or your faith community or group of friends can commit to a daily delivery of these goods, even better.

Lot J – Future Auggie Parking – is reserved for guests of Admissions only. The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2024 (graduating by May ‘26)

Lot J – Future Auggie Parking – is reserved for guests of Admissions only. We have ran into multiple instances where the lot is full (and not due to our visit schedule) and our guests/prospective students can not find parking that is reserved for them, starting their visit to campus off on the wrong foot. The Augsburg Student Music Therapy Association (ASMTA) is looking for musicians to perform for our (hopefully) annual Riverside Jams concert! Hello Auggies! I am a student in the graduate department of clinical psychology and seeking students for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask about symptoms of depression or loneliness and how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home.

Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

Participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

Augsburg Writing Center Tutor

Writing Center tutors will work with fellow Augsburg students, individually or in small groups, to

provide guidance and assistance in writing for courses in any discipline, at all stages of the writing process. Tutors may also work with students on extra-curricular writing such as applications, personal statements, and creative work. The purpose of our Writing Center work is to help students build their skills, their confidence, and their comfort level as writers and as students. As a part of this center, tutors will learn about writing in both practical and theoretical terms—as a way of thinking, a means of communicating with others, and a practice that varies across disciplines and across social and cultural conditions, also reaching into the practical aspects of one’s career. Additionally, as members of the Writer Center team, tutors are required to attend regular meetings for continuing education and discussions about Center business.

Responsibilities

– Assist, individually or (occasionally) in small groups, students who seek help with their writing for a minimum of 5 hours a week
– Attend biweekly mandatory meetings prepared, having read or written any assigned material
– Attend two Staff workshops per academic year
– Assist in ongoing tasks (e.g., greeting students, collating data, keeping the space clean and orderly) to ensure the Center runs smoothly and efficiently
– As time allows during shifts, assist with creating Writing Center materials, conducting relevant research, marketing materials, and helping with projects such as designing the center space, assessment, and building connections across the campus community.
– Present Writing Center orientations (in the Center or in classes) on occasion
– Adhere to Writing Center policies and enforce Center rules
– Refer students to other campus resources when appropriate
– Meet with the Center Director as part of ongoing tutor evaluation and complete self-evaluations
– Maintain payroll and Center data records thoroughly and on time
– May also have opportunities to participate in specialty student and faculty development workshops
– Commit to ongoing education to improve tutoring techniques and enhance culturally responsive teaching practices

About The Confluence:

The Confluence (formally the Augsburg Youth Theology Institute) is an annual week-long summer program for high school students (9th-12th grades) focused on vocational discernment. The experience offers young people an intensive opportunity for vocational and theological reflection in a college setting. It is a collaborative effort between Augsburg University’s Christensen Center for Vocation and Campus Ministry.

The Christensen Center for Vocation at Augsburg University is looking to hire a 15-20 hour/ week Program Manager for The Confluence. The Program Manager works with the Executive Director of the Christensen Center for Vocation to provide vision and direction for The Confluence. In IT this week we are saying farewell to Matt Schornstein (’04) who has been in the department since 2004. Matt has led our infrastructure team since 2011. He and his team run the IT you use daily but don’t see — WiFi, wired networks, servers. Matt has led that team through over a decade of incredible growth and change in technologies. And with the shared services agreement in 2016, he added Luther Seminary’s network to what he oversaw.

We appreciate all that Matt has accomplished and he will be sorely missed. Matt’s last day is Friday the 27th. We wish him well on his next IT adventure.

In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 6. These events will be geared to students, but all of the Augsburg community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. This position is responsible for cleaning and servicing designated areas according to the established procedures, area of responsibility and other assignments necessary to perform as assigned by the supervisor or lead. Follow proper cleaning methods, utilizing equipment for each situation, based on training, to ensure the campus maintains a healthy, safe, and sanitary environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

– General cleaning of area(s) of responsibility including waste removal, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, detail cleaning of restrooms, entries, common areas, wall washing, Kivac as needed, spot cleaning walls, staircases, dust mop, and mop or auto scrub floors.
– Detailing area(s) which will include dusting, edge vacuuming, cleaning light fixtures, cleaning and polishing drinking fountains, and straightening furniture and accessories.
– Buffing floors, Cleaning Carpets, and deep cleaning restrooms as needed.
– Clean all glass entry doors, inside and out. throughout the shift, as needed.
– Assist in the coverage of open areas due to vacations, sick calls, and open positions.

Additional Examples of Work Performed:

– Completing work orders.
– Clean and maintain all custodial equipment and closets according to set standards.
– Clean outside entryways, up to 15 feet from the door, and keep them free of debris and snow.

During the semester you do research into an area you are passionate about and we partner with a number of organizations and communities in community-based learning. This type of learning provides students with the opportunity to connect their gifts, skills, and interests with an organization, group, or issue. Your work informs our classroom discussions and course work while also giving back to the community in valuable and reciprocal ways.
Course meets T-Th 12-1:40 and fulfills an Augsburg Experience.

IT this week we are saying farewell to Matt Schornstein (’04) who has been in the department since 2004. Matt has led our infrastructure team since 2011. He and his team run the IT you use daily but don’t see — WiFi, wired networks, servers. Matt has led that team through over a decade of incredible growth and change in technologies. And with the shared services agreement in 2016, he added Luther Seminary’s network to what he oversaw.

We appreciate all that Matt has accomplished and he will be sorely missed. Matt’s last day is Friday the 27th. We wish him well on his next IT adventure.

My name is Dean Harris, and I am a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Department at Augsburg University. I am conducting this study as partial fulfillment of my doctoral degree, with Dr. Patricia Hopkins-Smith as my advisor.

You are being invited to participate in a research study on investigating influences of intrapersonal factors on the relationship between casual sex and mental health. If you agree to this study, I will ask you to complete a survey via Qualtrics. This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2024 (graduating by May ‘26)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Tuesday, November 28th at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Wednesday, December 6th (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.
