Voting 101: How to Vote in Minnesota from One Auggie to Another

submitted by johnso31@augsburg.edu

My name is Megan Johnson and I am a 2019 graduate from Augsburg! I know that this coming election is one of the biggest elections of our lifetimes, so I’ve been trying to think of a way to help make sure as many people vote as possible.

This made me think about the 2016 election when I was a sophomore. Everyone was telling me how important it was to vote, but no one told me how to vote! I remember being overwhelmed with the whole process because I was living on campus but I was registered to vote at my parents’ house. And, of course, with this year being 2020, voting is even more confusing with distance voting!

So, with all of that said, I put together a step-by-step instructional PDF on How to Vote in Minnesota this year! The PDF is interactive so you can click anything in green to go to the necessary websites. Specifically, this PDF walks you through how to vote via absentee (mail-in) ballot. However, you can of course follow the first two steps and then vote in person on November 3rd, but I’d recommend using an absentee (mail-in) ballot and then either mailing it in or dropping it off in person (both are explained in the PDF). You can vote via absentee ballot anytime between now and November!

To view the directions, click the link and download the attached PDF then open it with your preferred PDF viewing app. If you have any questions about the process of voting or using the PDF, please feel free to email me at themeganellen28@gmail.com.

I hope this helps make this voting process easier for you!

Just Report It: Auggies Act

submitted by poessnec@augsburg.edu

It’s with great excitement and energy to announce a brand new campus-wide initiative; Just Report It: Auggies Act.

Just Report It: Auggies Act is a new way the university provides students and employees with an easy, centralized, and confidential way of reporting concerns, violations of the Student Conduct Code, Title IX, Discrimination and Bias, and more.

Starting in October, this will be the new way the campus community can report concerns of Discrimination & Bias, Incident Reporting, Sexual Misconduct & Title IX, Students of Concern, and Student Grievances & General Concerns. Existing report forms will no longer be used.

Please visit the Report It landing page, to learn more.
https://www.augsburg.edu/report/

As this software rolls out, be on the lookout for more opportunities to learn more about this initiative and how it will benefit our campus community.

Cover Reveal for Howling Bird Press Book

submitted by cihlar@augsburg.edu

Howling Bird Press is pleased to reveal the cover design for our forthcoming memoir “Self, Divided,” by John Medeiros! Noted author Brian Malloy says “‘Self, Divided’ is an immersive journey to the self’s ‘true north’ against the backdrop of identical twinship, growing up working class, coming out, and living with HIV/AIDS. Captivating not only for Medeiros’s evocative lyricism, but also for his original and imaginative use of narrative space, his quest to create an identity all his own is a sad, funny, and memorable story of growth against the odds, written in the language of hard-won victory.”

High Holy Days Primer

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

“High Holy Day Primer”, created by Interfaith Fellow ‘17-’19 Wendy Goldberg, to help Augsburg know about this big season for Jews in our community.
1. The Jewish High Holy Day season runs from Fri. evening, Sept. 18 – Sun., Oct. 11. Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur are listed on secular calendars, but there is another 9-day holiday called Sukkot, right after Yom Kippur.
2. For college students, being away from home for these holidays can highlight the homesickness and the yearning to be in the nest, and for some, quite the opposite. If you celebrate Christmas, imagine staying on campus while most students return home for the holiday. If you celebrate Ramadan, this season is similar to that month of observance. All synagogues and the University of Minnesota Hillel will welcome students and we can help connect them, though everything is on Zoom this year.
3. How to be an ally: We encourage you to have conversations with your Jewish students and colleagues about their observances. They will likely welcome the questions or the greetings. And you could also move important meetings or events away from Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur. The 2020 dates for these holidays are:
Fri.– Sun., Sept.18-20: Rosh Hashannah begins at sundown on Sept. 18 and ends at nightfall on Sept. 20. Some American Jews celebrate for one day, others for two.
Sun., Sept. 27, Yom Kippur begins an hour before sundown and ends at nightfall on Monday, Sept. 28, and after a fully 25-hour fast and being in services most of those 25 hours, it’s unlikely that students would do any work on Monday, Sept. 28.
Sukkot begins at sundown on Fri., Oct. 2. The first two days are “Holy Days” where some Jews don’t work, use electricity, engage in commerce. Sukkot ends at sundown on either on Oct. 9 or 10.

COVID-19: Adhere to Health Guidelines in Social Media

submitted by alamilla@augsburg.edu

You already know that what you post on social media can impact your reputation, and you probably monitor what you do or say accordingly.

During the pandemic, there’s a new thing to watch out for: photos that don’t reflect physical distancing or the appropriate use of masks. Such photos can go viral, generating negative feedback.

This is especially important for social media posts that represent Augsburg. In order to support students, staff, faculty, and their families, we are following the Minnesota Department of Health’s guidelines for institutions of higher education, as well as Governor Walz’s executive order mandating face coverings in public spaces indoors as well as outdoors where physical distancing cannot be maintained. Photos posted to Augsburg social media accounts or photos that tag Augsburg should reflect these practices.

Please also keep in mind that photos from before the pandemic may be misinterpreted. For now please do not use old photos that show groups of people close together for Augsburg-related communications.

COVID-19 Testing at Augsburg TODAY: 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

submitted by sitarami@augsburg.edu

COVID-19 testing will be available to Augsburg students, staff, and faculty on Thursday (today) from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the quad at Augsburg. There is no preregistration and the testing will be walk-up only, first come-first served, so there may be a brief wait for services. Drive-up and walk-up testing are also available at the People’s Center, 425 20th Ave S, (one block west from Augsburg on Riverside Avenue) Monday through Friday, at the outdoor testing site on 20th Avenue.

The testing process consists of on-site registration with People’s Center, a brief medical appointment (about 10 minutes) for assessment of symptoms/exposure and discussion of risks, and a throat swab test. Results are usually available in 3-5 days and participants will get a call back for both negative or positive results. For this event, result calls will likely go out on Monday 9/14 or Tuesday 9/15.

Participants will need:
Insurance cards/information if they have health insurance. While insurance will be billed, participants are not responsible for any out of pocket expenses, such as copays or deductibles. No one will be turned away for lack of insurance.

A contact phone number to get test results.

A face covering, which must be worn at all times on the test site. Disposable face masks are available at the test site, but participants are encouraged to wear their own masks.

Participants should also be prepared to discuss symptoms or possible COVID-19 exposure and medical risk factors with the health care professional.

COVID-19 Database in Lindell Library

submitted by holleric@augsburg.edu

Lindell Library’s HeinOnline database added a new collection, “COVID-19 in America: Response, Issues, and Law”, which provides:

Factual information on the impact of COVID-19 on public health, economics, society, and the world;

Scholarly articles and external links to supplement their research; and

Hundreds of Congressional Research Service (CRS) and Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports.

“COVID-19 in America” provides insight into the federal response to the pandemic, covering widely reported topics such as vaccine development, as well as less publicized topics such as the pandemic’s effect on organ donation and transplantation, support for the homeless, and more.

For more information, contact your liaison librarian or Mary Hollerich, holleric@augsburg.edu or x1603.
