This session will focus on helping faculty to identify students in distress by increasing awareness of signs of struggle. Further, because faculty see their students regularly, they are often the first to notice that a student is struggling. This session will focus on helping faculty to identify students in distress by increasing awareness of signs of struggle. We will then share strategies and resources for supporting students when you notice they are struggling.

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

The 2023 trip will take place on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Applications due February 7, 2023 and can be found at https://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. If you would like to learn more about the program or would like advising on the application, please contact the URGO office at urgo@augsburg.edu.

The Sabo Scholars are juniors and seniors who have an interest in and a commitment to engagement in the political process, public policy, and/or careers in public service. This application is open to students who will be juniors or seniors in the 2023-2024 academic year.

The scholarship for 2023/2024 is $3,500 and is renewable for one year. Applications are due by March 5.

Phillips Scholars create and test innovative ideas that address community problems — running their own summer programming. There’s support along the way, with the students coming together to develop their leadership skills and prepare for their projects. Scholars receive more than $9,000 in scholarships and stipends. Ten students from 15 eligible Minnesota private colleges and universities will be selected each year.

Applications are due February 24, 2023.

You’re eligible if you:
– Are enrolled full-time in the undergraduate program
– Demonstrate financial need
– Are a first-year, sophomore or junior in the spring of 2023
– Aspire to address a significant need within a particular community
– Demonstrate interest in civic engagement
– Can participate in all required program trainings and events
– Can complete a community service project in Minnesota during the summer of 2024

Enhancing Instructor Presence: Audio Feedback
The microphone tool in Moodle allows you to add comments when grading, in the announcement forum, and anywhere you see the content editor toolbar. This type of delivery conveys tone more effectively than text. It is possible to record audio comments from the Moodle app on a phone as well, allowing one to move around while grading.

VoiceThread
Presentation material is often delivered in a one-way communication method (instructor to student). Consider VoiceThread as an alternative that can engage students through collaborative and interactive multimedia slideshows that support images, documents, and videos. The Faculty Development Program at Augsburg is launching a new Faculty Mentoring program for new (and new-ish) faculty members, and we’re looking for tenured faculty who are knowledgeable about how Augsburg “works” to provide mentoring! We’re looking for at least 11 mentors to “match” with our mentees – mostly first and second year assistant professors.

The basic requirements to be considered as a mentor are (1) you must be a current, tenured member of the Augsburg Faculty and (2) have a general understanding of how the University “works” beyond your department. If you are interested, please complete the short “Application of Interest” posted below no later than Monday, January 23rd (the form also contains more information). All selected members are required to attend Mentor Orientation on the afternoon of Thursday, January 26th.

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially Space Physics & Engineering, Mathematics, and Science/Mathematics Education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2023 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

We’re looking for at least 11 mentors to “match” with our mentees – mostly first and second year assistant professors.

The basic requirements to be considered as a mentor are (1) you must be a current, tenured member of the Augsburg Faculty and (2) have a general understanding of how the University “works” beyond your department. Our students are struggling with increasingly complex needs and demands, many of which can create barriers and challenges to academic success. Further, because faculty see their students regularly, they are often the first to notice that a student is struggling. This session will focus on helping faculty to identify students in distress by increasing awareness of signs of struggle. The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

The scholarship for 2023/2024 is $3,500 and is renewable for one year. Applications are due by March 5.

Phillips Scholars create and test innovative ideas that address community problems — running their own summer programming. There’s support along the way, with the students coming together to develop their leadership skills and prepare for their projects. Scholars receive more than $9,000 in scholarships and stipends. Ten students from 15 eligible Minnesota private colleges and universities will be selected each year.

Applications are due February 24, 2023.

You’re eligible if you:
– Are enrolled full-time in the undergraduate program
– Demonstrate financial need
– Are a first-year, sophomore or junior in the spring of 2023
– Aspire to address a significant need within a particular community
– Demonstrate interest in civic engagement
– Can participate in all required program trainings and events

It is important that your syllabus is reflected accurately and completely in your gradebook so students have a clear understanding of expectations and grading. Your eLearning team is here to help you check that the two are synchronized at the onset of the semester. The following are some suggestions for syllabus-gradebook alignment.

1) Create a syllabus with grading in mind. Use the Augsburg University Syllabus Template, which you may download to use as a model. This template includes important university policies.

This workshop, inspired by faculty discussion at the December faculty meeting, has been specifically created for Augsburg teaching faculty who are experiencing frustration related to student attendance in their courses and would like to do something about it that meets both instructor and student needs. This workshop will ask you to think about why you have your current attendance policies, what isn’t working and what do you want to happen, followed by time to literally “workshop” your Spring course policies with others who have similar issues (as well as some solutions!). Faculty who have successful attendance policies in their course are also encouraged to attend to act as peer mentors!
