The Augsburg Writing Center offers both online and in-person tutoring. Skilled students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. We are looking for adults aged 55+ to participate in research on social interactions with others by engaging in a structured conversation with another person virtually using Zoom. The experiment takes about an hour, and as a benefit for participating you will receive a $5 Target gift card, or we will make a $5 donation in your name to Open Arms of MN which provides meals to terminally ill and homebound Minnesotans. Plus there will be one randomly selected grand prize winner on June 1st who will also receive a $100 Target Gift Card!

The basic technology skills required are:

* Participants must have access to a computer as this study can only be performed using a computer (desktop or laptop). We don’t recommend using a phone.
* Your computer must have camera and microphone abilities.
* Individuals need to be able to fill out an online survey. You will be asked to complete short online surveys before and after the online Zoom conversation session.
* Participants need the ability to use email, have reliable internet access, and be able to download and access the Zoom application on their computer. If needed, we can help you get connected with Zoom in advance of your participation.

Beyond the Cap and Gown: Conquering the Job Search Maze

The Strommen Center is proud to offer a job prep course for those planning to find work after graduation. Beyond the Cap and Gown will be an online, 4 week asynchronous course. You will be led through:
job search techniques
resume and cover letter writing
interviewing tips
self-care and dealing with rejection
The course is planned to begin after spring break and will involve videos and activities with roughly 1-2 hours of work a week.

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2024 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2025 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2025. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. The priority deadline to apply is March 28; however, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2025.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? Students will engage in community service learning and interfaith events as well as learn from guest speakers from religious communities, business professionals, and other leaders from across sectors. Students accepted into the Interfaith Scholars program receive a $2,000 scholarship.

This is doubly true for first-generation students and students of color. But institutions have not always prioritized student relationships in their mission, reward structures, and strategic plans. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with students, faculty, and staff, we will illuminate how institutional leaders at all levels can 1) foster institutional cultures that prioritize relationship-building and 2) assist students in developing practical strategies to build the constellations of relationships that will help them learn, belong, and thrive.

Description: For five decades, research has demonstrated that student connections with faculty, peers, and staff are critical to learning, identity, persistence, and success during and after college. This is doubly true for first-generation students and students of color. But institutions have not always prioritized student relationships in their mission, reward structures, and strategic plans. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with students, faculty, and staff, we will illuminate how institutional leaders at all levels can 1) foster institutional cultures that prioritize relationship-building and 2) assist students in developing practical strategies to build the constellations of relationships that will help them learn, belong, and thrive.

Interfaith Scholars is a yearlong student cohort that engages students as partners in ongoing interreligious dialogue and action by exploring methods and best practices for talking about religion/spirituality/worldview in a diverse democracy. Students will engage in community service learning and interfaith events as well as learn from guest speakers from religious communities, business professionals, and other leaders from across sectors. Students accepted into the Interfaith Scholars program receive a $2,000 scholarship.

The cohort meets for the full academic year as a credit based course on Thursday nights from 6:00-9:00 pm. Professor Najeeba Syeed is the primary instructor.

Students from every religious tradition and students without a connection to a religious tradition are encouraged to apply.

Navigate is student success software that guides students through the Augsburg experience. It allows staff and faculty to fully support a student by creating a coordinated care network. This week in the CTL Workshop “AI in Higher Education”, there were several questions pertaining to academic honesty in the age of AI. As we pursue various avenues to encourage academic honesty, we would like to share with you a simple idea that could help in this area.

In “Assignment Settings, click on the “Submission settings” drop down and select “Yes”.

If you enable the “Submission statement” in Assignment Settings, the students will see this when they submit their work.

Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 50 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register using the link below by February 15.

You must have approval from your faculty mentor before registering for Zyzzogeton. If you do not have a formal abstract at this point, please provide a brief description of your research instead. Students will engage in community service learning and interfaith events as well as learn from guest speakers from religious communities, business professionals, and other leaders from across sectors. Students accepted into the Interfaith Scholars program receive a $2,000 scholarship.

The cohort meets for the full academic year as a credit based course on Thursday nights from 6:00-9:00 pm. Professor Najeeba Syeed is the primary instructor.

The experience promises to be intellectual, communal, theological, dialogical, challenging, and practical.

All full-time faculty who have been employed at Augsburg for at least three years are eligible for the awards. Additionally adjunct faculty who have taught at Augsburg for at least three years are eligible for a Distinguished Contribution in Teaching Award.

Any member of the Augsburg Community (faculty student, staff, etc.) may nominate a person for these awards. For more information on the process and requirements of nominators, please see the individual nomination forms on the page linked below.

Beginning Monday, February 12, pre-health students can access quick and convenient pop-up health professions advising every Monday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-3 p.m. Career and Health Professions Specialist Bridget Lavish will be on hand in 101 Hagfors to help with planning prerequisites, obtaining and documenting experiences, writing application essays, and more.
