Augsburg University is again participating in GiveMN’s annual Give to the Max Day on Thursday, November 16th. Last year, 30+ projects raised $208,000 in funding thanks to donations made through the Give to the Max website.

If your academic department, athletic team, or student organization has a cause that needs funding, Give to the Max is an excellent way to raise support. Over the last four years Augsburg has raised $1.2 million and led the donation leaderboard for Colleges and Universities.

Flu Shots on Monday, September 25

The Minnesota Visiting Nurse Association will be on campus administering flu shots in the Center for Wellness and Counseling office (first floor Anderson Res Hall) on Monday 9/25/17 from 10:30 am – 1:00 pm. Most insurances are accepted or you can pay $38 with cash or check. Please be sure to bring your insurance card if you want your insurance to be billed. College Possible is accepting applications for new students until October 1!!

College Possible is a nonprofit organization for college access and success, serving low-income students. This year, we have a new program called Catalyze and students can join the program while in college. Coaches will mentor and support all students on their path to earn a degree. Since the coaches just graduated college, we can relate to students and connect them to resources on campus and in the greater community.

Apply for Mayo Innovation Scholars Program

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the projects or innovations and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,000. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Laura Swanson Lindahl Promoted to Asst. Director of Marketing Management

I’m pleased to announce that Laura Swanson Lindahl has accepted a promotion to fill the new assistant director of marketing management position in the Office of Marketing and Communication. This position was created as part of the shared services agreement for marketing between Augsburg and Luther Seminary. As assistant director, Laura will play a role similar in some ways to what an account executive would do at a marketing agency. She will meet with our partners on both campuses to strategize about their marketing needs, convey that information back to our designers and copywriter, and manage projects for marketing deliverables.

Laura brings a host of skills and experiences to this role, which is critical for the success of the shared services model. Her experience interacting with our campus partners and her ability to plan and execute complex projects with multiple contributors will serve both Luther and Augsburg exceedingly well. Her experience working on the news and media side of our division will help us to build a deeper integration between marketing and PR. Laura will continue to lead the Augsburg Now magazine in her new role, and will begin to take on Luther Story magazine going forward as well.

I hope you will join me in congratulating her on this accomplishment! A revised version of Laura’s previous position, focusing on social media, will be posted soon.

Community Service Opportunity: Judge Debates for MNUDL this Fall

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for 6 high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at tournaments!

The core debate tournaments will happen at these dates and locations:

October 6-7th: U of M (East Bank)
October 14th: Season Opener (St. Paul)
October 27th-28th: Rosebowl (Roseville)
November 10th-11th: UMBrooks (U of M, West Bank)

Feeling haunted by the Halloween spirit? Call your friends and make a short horror film this fall! Augsburg University students are invited to submit their short films with spooky/scary content to be screened at the Augsburg Student Spooky Film Festival, hosted by Augsburg Art Club. The free screening will be held in Sateren Auditorium on Wed. October 25th, with popcorn and candy available. You will be able to vote on your favorite films at the end of the screening, and the filmmaker with the highest voted film will receive a prize. The time limit for films is 10 minutes, and films can be submitted by uploading a high-quality version of your work to Google Drive and then sharing it with olsonl@augsburg.edu. More and more participants, schools, and providers are seeking to incorporate the importance of sustainability as a focus or at least an aspect of study for students on international programs in today’s world. Efforts to develop sustainable practices in the study abroad field will be discussed, as well as the development and implementation of sustainable practices at Augsburg’s CGEE Study Centers in Latin America and Namibia, and at the IES sustainability program in Freiburg.

The winter break program, From Harry Potter to #Brexit: Youth Culture and Social Change in the UK, will examine the connections among popular culture, politics, and youth activism in 20th and 21st century Britain. Travel to the UK from December 28 to January 7!

The course, WST 220, is 4-credits and can fulfill a Humanities credit, or a requirement for WST majors/minors or for Youth Studies minors. This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement.

Augsburg University is again participating in GiveMN’s annual Give to the Max Day on Thursday, November 16th. Last year, 30+ projects raised $208,000 in funding thanks to donations made through the Give to the Max website.

If your academic department, athletic team, or student organization has a cause that needs funding, Give to the Max is an excellent way to raise support. Over the last four years Augsburg has raised $1.2 million and lead the donation leaderboard for Colleges and Universities.

URGO Research and Travel Grants Available

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) offers $1,000 Academic-Year Research Grants to fund 100 hours of student research. Students who are interested in conducting research during the year are encouraged to seek out ongoing faculty research projects that they may join.

URGO also offers Conference Travel Grants of up to $850 for students who have been accepted to present their research at a professional conference.

Both applications can be found on the URGO website. The funds may be used at any time during the academic year, however the grants are given out on a rolling basis, so we recommend interested students apply in the fall.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the projects or innovations and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,000. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Former Auggie Appointed by Governor Mark Dayton to Young Women’s Cabinet

The Young Women’s Cabinet, comprised of up to 25 young women and youth leaders (ages 16-24) from the eight identified communities, will be charged with ensuring that the work of the Working Groups and the Council stays grounded in the lived experiences of the young women and youth from each community and the community-specific challenges and solutions they identified. The YWCA St. Paul will facilitate the Young Women’s Cabinet and will provide leadership development to the young women and youth who sit on the Cabinet and Community-Specific Working Groups.

On September 9th, 2017, Governor Mark Dayton appointed former Auggie, Eron Godi, Class of 2017, and 24 other young Minnesota women to the Young Women’s Cabinet, as part of the Young Women’s Initiative of Minnesota.

Giving life to inanimate objects made from cardboard, masking tape, newspapers and papier-mâché, we will create small and intimately-scaled puppet theater. Different forms introduced may include object theater, hand puppets, figure puppets, and doll/bunraku puppets and masks. We will explore creating an intimate theater from scratch inspired by poems, obituaries, or a love letter.

Violins and Violas Wanted

The orchestra’s off to a great start! We have immediate openings for violin and viola players. We want to grow in size so that we can tackle more complex works later in the year. We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 – 6:40 p.m. in the Orchestra Room M-3 in the Music Building. You don’t have to be a music major to join. All Augsburg community members and their friends in the greater Twin Cities area are invited to come and be a part of this great musical experience!

Augsburg McNair Scholars Program Award 5-Year Grant

The Augsburg University Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program was just notified the grant was approved for 2017-2022! This signifies the McNair Scholars, a federal TRIO program, will be funded $232,262 annually for the next five years by the U.S. Department of Education (slight fluctuations are dependent on congressional decisions). The goal of the McNair Scholars Program is to increase graduate degree awards for students from underrepresented segments of society; either first-generation college students with financial need, and/or members of a group underrepresented in graduate education. McNair participants have demonstrated strong academic potential and will prepare for graduate study through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. The McNair Scholars Program was created by the U.S. Congress in honor of Dr. Ronald E. McNair, the astronaut and physicist who was among the first African Americans in the U.S. space program. Pre-Health Advising Sessions for New Augsburg Students

This session for new first-year and transfer students interested in pre-health will provide information on how to explore health careers and how to plan for the courses and experiences required by professional/graduate schools such as medical, dental, PA, PT, public health, vet med, etc.
