Campus Share Shop at Augsburg, Check it Out

submitted by keenern@augsburg.edu

Members of the Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are coming together to create a Campus Share Shop for the students of Augsburg! Our purpose is to create a space where students can check out goods they need, rather than purchasing new items. By doing this, we hope to:
-Reduce the consumption of material goods
-Reduce students’ costs
-Create a community space where students can take part in informal learning around sustainable practices and skill-sharing.

This is a project created by students for students, so we are reaching out to you to find out what you would want to see in the share shop. Please take a few minutes to take a short survey that will aid in creating a share shop that will properly serve the students of Augsburg.

Gmail confidential mode coming

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

In late June Google will be releasing “confidential mode” in Gmail. Here’s a few key things to keep in mind

– this only prevents accidental sharing of an email, people can still take a picture or screen shot of the content or attachments
– this feature is meant to protect personal or sensitive information but not regulated or legally governed data
– any regulated data (SSNs, credit card numbers, bank information) should still never be sent via email. When in doubt consult the Data Classification Policy and the Regulated Data Storage Chart ( on IT Policies Page http://inside.augsburg.edu/it/policies/ ).

Welcome to 30 AP Coordinators

submitted by updike@augsburg.edu

Today is our last day of the APSI. The teachers have commented on how welcoming everyone has been and have really enjoyed the facilities and their experience at Augsburg. Thanks for making them feel so welcomed!

We are topping off the week with 30 AP Coordinators today. The Coordinators are often administrators or teachers who get release time to organize the very important logistics around AP curriculum and exams in their schools. There are some significant changes coming this year, so Augsburg is offering a free workshop to the Coordinators so they can be adequately prepared for the new changes this year. They will be in the Marshall Room for their workshop, and the registration will take place in Christensen Center.

Thank you all for making Augsburg an amazing place for these educators to visit during a week of their summer “vacation”!!

Overcoming Racism Conference, November 15 and 16

submitted by youngs@augsburg.edu

Save the dates of November 15 & 16 for the 2019 Overcoming Racism Conference at Metropolitan State University.

This is the 11th year that Facilitating Racial Equity Collaborative (FREC) has presented the Overcoming Racism Conference. Parking on campus this week

submitted by updike@augsburg.edu

Our teachers had a great first day on campus. To everyone who helped each of them find Sateren, a classroom, or where to eat lunch…thank you! You may have noticed parking got a little tight on Tuesday. We anticipate parking to be very similar for the rest of this week as our participants are parking in Lots A, D and L. On Friday, we will be welcoming an additional 30 people to campus for an AP Coordinator workshop. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this time of higher demand for parking, and thanks for everything you’re doing to make our teachers feel welcomed at Augsburg! Please email apsi@augsburg.edu with any concerns or questions.

As a reminder, these teachers are coming from 17 states and 3 countries. There are more than 150 school districts represented throughout the week with about 130 teachers residing in MN! This is a great opportunity to showcase Augsburg University and raise Augsburg’s profile with teachers who are working with exceptional students.

As is true during an in-person session, you and the tutor will have a collaborative conversation about your draft during the online meeting.

Appointments are available Tuesdays 6:00-7:30pm Wednesdays from 4:00-5:30pm. For more information about this service and instructions for making an appointment, please see our Online Writing Center FAQ or email Sarah Groeneveld Kenney (groeneve@augsburg.edu). The Sabo Center Needs Your Help

submitted by bouzardg@augsburg.edu

Dear Colleagues,

On July 10-12, the Sabo Center will be hosting a national conference on campus for the Place-Based Justice Network (read more about it by clicking on the link, below). As part of that conference, on Thursday, July 11, we will be having an evening reception hosted by the McKnight Foundation at their offices in downtown Minneapolis. We would like to be able to offer van shuttles (we have athletic vans reserved) between campus and the McKnight Foundation, and from the McKnight Foundation back to campus. Our Sabo Center staff is stretched thin staffing the conference, which is where we need YOUR help if you are a certified van driver!

We are looking for TWO certified athletic van drivers to drive conference attendees from campus to McKnight (downtown Minneapolis), running continuously from Foss Center to McKnight between 5:45-6:30p.m. and from McKnight back to Foss Center from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m.

You are welcome to attend the reception between the driving shifts, and we are offering a $25 gift card to each driver! You can also use community service hours if you choose.

Please respond to Green Bouzard (bouzardg@augsburg.edu) by June 21 if you are available and interested!

2003 Honda Accord For Sale

submitted by bouzardg@augsburg.edu

2003 Honda Accord EX-L for sale AS IS.

This 4-door sedan runs GREAT and has all-new brakes (October 2018) and a brand new steering column pump (March 2019). The interior is all leather, heated driver and passenger seats.

203,000 miles and going strong!

I am selling the car AS IS. The car has some body damage due to a recent run-in with a deer: the left headlight needs to be replaced, and the front hood is indented and needs to be fixed before a next oil change. The front bumper has some significant cracks from the cold winter, but could simply be more firmly re-attached where it was jostled by the deer. However, the car is running perfectly otherwise and I have been able to drive it without any problems.

Even with the recent front-end damage, this car is worth $3,500. I’m selling it for $2,000.

Please contact me (Green Bouzard, bouzardg@augsburg.edu) if you want more information. See the link below for photos.

Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Social Workers MN Chapter

submitted by madden@augsburg.edu

Lifetime Achievement Award – Nancy Rodenborg, MSW, LGSW, MIA, PhD

Dr. Rodenborg was a United Nations volunteer in Somalia in the early 1980’s, setting the stage for her life-long commitment to transcultural relationships and international development with a global perspective. Since then, she has dedicated her research to understand the interactions between cultures and to apply that understanding particularly for the well-being of those who are newcomers, immigrants, refugees, people with disabilities, and/or from historically oppressed groups. Her dissertation research focused on the influence of institutional racism and discrimination in child welfare cases, building on her prior work as a child protection social worker or supervisor in Brown, Dakota and Hennepin Counties in Minnesota and a child protection trainer in Oregon. Her work embodies the link between theory and practice in the field of social work.

In addition to her teaching and research on diversity and inequality, Dr. Rodenborg has been a leader in global education, helping develop the Social Work in Mexico semester and leading student educational groups to Norway and Namibia, and implementing diversity curriculum programs including the Intergroup Dialogue method. Her research on intergroup dialogue and aversive racism is pioneering in the field and has helped frame the multicultural foundations of Augsburg’s MSW program. Dr. Rodenborg is also a remarkable collaborator who has partnered on numerous projects with faculty colleagues in her department, University, and with community partners, and has served on boards and commissions in community, nonprofit and educational settings.

However, the car is running perfectly otherwise and I have been able to drive it without any problems.

Even with the recent front-end damage, this car is worth $3,500. I’m selling it for $2,000.

Thursday Screening and Discussion of Film about Surveillance

submitted by svanoe@augsburg.edu

The Feeling of Being Watched
Screening and Discussion with Filmmaker
Thursday, June 13th 6-9pm
Hagfors 150

Join the Justice Coalition, CAIR MN and the Sabo Center this Thursday for the screening of the award winning feature film “The Feeling of Being Watched”. We have the honor of being joined by the filmmaker and activist Assia Boundaoui who will give us an intimate understanding of her film and family’s struggle with surveillance. At a time where police entrapment runs rampant and individuals are persecuted for their faith, it is more important now than ever to firmly understand the police state, surveillance, and how fear & manipulation have trumped our civil liberties and privacy. There will also be space for community members to share their thoughts and feelings on the surveillance of our community.

Film Synopsis: In the Arab-American neighborhood outside of Chicago where director Assia Boundaoui grew up, most of her neighbors think they have been under surveillance for over a decade. While investigating their experiences, Assia uncovers tens of thousands of pages of FBI documents that prove her hometown was the subject of one of the largest counterterrorism investigations ever conducted in the U.S. before 9/11, code-named “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.” With unprecedented access, the film follows the filmmaker’s examination of why her community fell under blanket government surveillance. Assia struggles to disrupt the government secrecy shrouding what happened and takes the FBI to federal court to compel them to make the records they collected about her community public. In the process, she confronts long-hidden truths about the FBI’s relationship to her community. The Feeling of Being Watched follows Assia as she pieces together this secret FBI operation, while grappling with the effects of a lifetime of surveillance on herself and her family.

Pastor Jeni, her husband, Colin (also an ELCA pastor), and their two young children are looking forward to making their home in Minnesota once again after their time abroad. Pastor Jeni will start at Luther in the late summer.

Please join me in welcoming Pastor Jeni as she joins the integrated Augsburg and Luther Seminary campus ministry team.
