Augsburg University is accepting applications for Auggie Basics Housing for summer 2022 and the 2022-23 academic year.

DEADLINE:
Monday, April 4, 2022 at 5pm

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Auggie Basics Housing is designed to address the needs of students who are experiencing housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into Auggie Basics Housing will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student.

MEAL PLANS:
Students are not required to have a meal plan if they are selected for Auggie Basics Housing, including those placed into buildings that require one.

ELIGIBILITY FOR PROGRAM:
To be eligible for Auggie Basics Housing, students must be returning students and not receiving other housing aid from the University. Incoming first-year and transfer students are not eligible to apply.

Students may apply for housing either for the summer term and/or for the academic year. Students must reapply each academic year, and may be part of the program for up to two academic years. Being chosen for Auggie Basics Housing one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

Hi! My name is Bella and I am a second year student here at Augsburg studying graphic design. I am currently trying to find personal care assistants to help me in my day to day life here on campus. This would include getting me ready for the day, helping me get set up for class and assisting me around campus. I am currently looking for people who would want to work some hours during this Spring semester and Summer! If you are a pre-med or nursing student, this is a great opportunity to get experience with patient care. Plus, you get to be paid to have fun!

The Dodge Nature Center is a non-profit organization operating 460 acres of nature preserves within the cities of West Saint Paul, Mendota Heights, and Cottage Grove that provides exceptional experiences in nature through environmental education for thousands of people each year. Each summer they hire one Auggie to work with their team! Hourly pay: $14.25-$15.00/hour paid through the Reuel Harmon Fund at Augsburg.

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2022 (graduating by December ‘24)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Wednesday, May 18 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 27 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Congratulations to our Auggie Pride Award winner for the month of March- Karen Mulhausen, staff member in the Fine Arts department. Karen is considered a miracle worker among her coworkers. She works tirelessly behind the scenes (quite literally, in the scene shop!) creating and building sets from scratch. She would be an incredible asset in any professional theater, but then you add the educational element of doing this at Augsburg, training students properly and teaching them new skills — She’s simply a wonder! Our staff senate is excited to recognize her for all of her efforts!! Congratulations Karen!

In the current global climate we need to be extra alert to phishing attacks and scams. To help with phishing awareness we’ve made a cybersecurity training course available to students in moodle (it will be on the main course dashboard). I invite students to go through this short course and take the quiz at the end.

Everyone who has a login to the Augsburg network has a role to play to keep our digital campus secure. Phishers are not always interested in you or your information. They’re often interested in using your login and email account to phish other people at Augsburg who have access to valuable personal information.

The Budget Working Group (Haaland, Devers, Kaivola, Chamberlin, Aoki and Pike) will continue its efforts through the end of spring semester in addressing cost cutting for FY23. Faculty are encouraged to submit questions to the group as often as they arise. Each week Senate President Andy Aoki includes responses to these questions in the report sent directly to all faculty members. As difficult decisions are still ahead, faculty input and questions are valuable.

Earlier in the semester, during the Omicron spike, several rooms on campus were reserved for use by students needing to attend classes offered remotely. These rooms were the Augsburg Room, Cedar Room, and Nelson Room in the Christensen Center; Sverdrup 208; and Oren Gateway Center 103. As we have moved out of the heightened protocols surrounding COVID-19, these rooms are no longer reserved for students and will be available for staff and faculty to reserve. If students are looking for a place to study or meet, Lindell Library has study rooms available as well as spaces like the Christensen Center Student Lounge. All student group related reservations for conference/meeting space should be requested through Auggie Life.

As Provost Kaivola announced in a recent update, Sarah Griesse will be retiring this spring, her last day is Friday, May 13. The internal search for our next dean of students has begun and the position is now posted. We hope to name the new dean of students in mid-April so that we have a month to support a transition prior to Sarah’s retirement.

The position will be open until it’s filled, but the review of applications will begin on Wednesday, March 23. So applicants should submit their materials no later than Tuesday, March 22 for initial consideration. Elaine Eschenbacher will chair the search committee, please contact her with any questions.

Please congratulate Kate Gray who has accepted a new position of Career Services and Alumni Connections Manager in the Strommen Center for Meaningful Work. Kate joined Augsburg in December 2019 as a Career Specialist, and has worked systematically to increase the Strommen Center’s capacity to deliver career services programming to students. In this new role she will manage career services and will be the primary liaison for alumni, faculty, and departmental partners. She will also focus on connecting Augsburg alumni to current students for career exploration, networking, coaching and mentoring.

This new position aims to advance Augsburg’s strategic commitments to signature experiences and workforce readiness while creating foundations for stronger student outcomes and achieving new efficiencies while building new connections to other university departments, offices, and initiatives.

Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. Earlier in the semester, during the Omicron spike, several rooms on campus were reserved for use by students needing to attend classes offered remotely. These rooms were the Augsburg Room, Cedar Room, and Nelson Room in the Christensen Center; Sverdrup 208; and Oren Gateway Center 103. As we have moved out of the heightened protocols surrounding COVID-19, these rooms are no longer reserved for students and will be available for staff and faculty to reserve. If students are looking for a place to study or meet, Lindell Library has study rooms available as well as spaces like the Christensen Center Student Lounge. All student group related reservations for conference/meeting space should be requested through Auggie Life.

Mike Suter, the current Central Services Lead, will be leaving Augsburg after Friday March 11th. I have accepted a new position within Loffler at a site downtown. Until the interview process for the new site lead is complete Jeni Long, currently the Mail Room operator, will be the interim site lead. There will also be a Loffler CSR to help fill the gap until all Central Services positions are filled.

I have had a fantastic four years working at Augsburg, developing relationships, learning new skills and helping to support a great and inclusive community.

Augsburg University is accepting applications for Auggie Basics Housing for summer 2022 and the 2022-23 academic year.

DEADLINE:
Monday, April 4, 2022 at 5pm

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Auggie Basics Housing is designed to address the needs of students who are experiencing housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into Auggie Basics Housing will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student.

MEAL PLANS:
Students are not required to have a meal plan if they are selected for Auggie Basics Housing, including those placed into buildings that require one.

ELIGIBILITY FOR PROGRAM:
To be eligible for Auggie Basics Housing, students must be returning students and not receiving other housing aid from the University. Incoming first-year and transfer students are not eligible to apply.

Students may apply for housing either for the summer term and/or for the academic year. Students must reapply each academic year, and may be part of the program for up to two academic years. Being chosen for Auggie Basics Housing one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

Augsburg Student Activities Council (ASAC) is a robust student organization that seeks to build community on campus through intentional large-scale programming including but not limited to planning and executing Homecoming, Auggie Days events, Movie Nights, Seasonal Events, and much more. The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. Our programs, including the Spanish Debate League, help students succeed through academic and personal development!

The Spanish Debate League returns virtually this spring. In this program, students learn debate skills while competing and practicing entirely in Spanish. The community chose this year’s topic – the ethics of eating animal products.

We need judges to make it happen! Being a judge is easy and fun. Debate judges listen to students, share feedback, and choose the winner! No experience required! We are just looking for people who are fluent in Spanish and want to support students. Questions? Email us at udlvolunteers@augsburg.edu

Augsburg University welcomes undergraduate students from around Minnesota to the 4th Annual Intercollegiate Film Festival. The call for submissions is open now unitl March 20th!

The festival recognizes the work of student filmmakers and writers as part of an interconnected statewide film community. The festival provides networking opportunities and juried merit awards of distinction. The festival is juried by professors and industry professionals. Additional support is provided by the Department of Communication Studies, Film, and New Media at Augsburg University and Twin Cities Film Fest.

Auggies can submit to the festival for free using a top secret waiver code (just email me). The festival will be held on April 2nd.
