Mental Health Tips During These Stressful Times

submitted by detloff@augsburg.edu

Here are a few good tips from the Center for Disease Control regarding things you can do to support yourself:

Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs
Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.
Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.

Call your healthcare provider if stress gets in the way of your daily activities for several days in a row. Check out the CWC webpage for additional resources.

Doug Rosenberg departure (Thanks for all your work, Doug)

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

Yesterday afternoon would have been Doug Rosenberg’s send-off celebration. Doug Rosenberg accepted a new role with Common Hope in Saint Paul, and is leaving his role as Manager of Purchasing and Central Services at Augsburg after today.

Instead of a party, Doug spent the hour on Zoom with me making sure Augsburg had all the information needed to continue our strong relationships with our service partners. During this time of transition, we are in the process of asking existing staff members from other parts of the division to take on various responsibilities in purchasing and central services. If you have a question about who is handling the various roles Doug has filled over the past two years, please let me know.

In the meantime, please join me in wishing Doug all the best in his new position at Common Hope!

Best regards,
Rebecca

Update on Internship and Augsburg Experience

submitted by tilton@augsburg.edu

The Strommen Center has been in communication with the Registrar, Academic Deans, and Chief Student Success Officer to create a plan to accommodate students during this unusual circumstance and to honor the work they have already put into their internships. An email has been sent to all Faculty Supervisors of students currently completing internships.

As you are aware, we recognize that students are likely to be nervous about their futures, including what is happening with internships that they are currently registered for.

On Friday, March 20th we emailed all students who are currently registered for an academic spring internship or a 0 – credit Augsburg Experience. The message in the email included the following text:

In this time of uncertainty, we want you to know that we are here to support you in completing your spring internship.

Since you are registered for a spring internship, the University wants you to know that if your internship site is closed or you are no longer able to meet your hours because of issues related to the coronavirus, Augsburg will honor the work you have already completed.

Please work with your faculty supervisor to determine what needs to happen for credit to be granted. Any student who was using their internship to meet the Augsburg Experience requirement will be granted Augsburg Experience.

For those students that are able to continue to work at their internship you should complete your commitment.

If you have questions, please contact Sandy Tilton, Employer Relations & Operations Associate at 612-330-1472 or email strommen.internships@augsburg.edu

Status Update on Canceled Augsburg Events

submitted by cashdar@augsburg.edu

On Monday, March 16 the Minnesota Department of Health shared new measures to slow the spread of COVID-19—and as those guidelines remain in place—University Events has been working with our campus partners to address bringing Augsburg events into compliance.

As of Tuesday night, we’ve contacted all event hosts with events through April 18 and some—for which event hosts reached out to us proactively—for later in April. If you have an event scheduled prior to April 18 and haven’t heard from your planner please reach out to them. If you are hosting an event know you can independently cancel your event. If you decide to cancel your event please notify your planner as soon as possible so they can assist with navigating the cancellation.

There are three alternatives we are discussing with event hosts:

1. Live Stream / Video Conference (or other alternate modality) – Some events can be conducted online, via conference call, or in other ways that do not require face-to-face interaction.

2. Postpone – For events that will be postponed, we are asking event hosts to hold off on rescheduling for specific future dates at this time. Augsburg will be monitoring the situation and University Events will be in touch with updates about rescheduling.

3. Cancel – Many events won’t be able to be rescheduled for a number of reasons.

We know that many of these cancellations, postponements, and adjustments are and will be disappointing for our campus community, the event hosts, other participants, and our valued community partners. We share in that sorrow, but also know that all of us are doing what we must to promote good health and protect the most vulnerable within our community and among our neighbors.

Please reach out to your assigned event planner or me with questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Sarah Cash-Darvell

Providing Care and Fostering Community amid COVID-19

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

RE: Providing Care & Fostering Community amid Covid-19, Augsburg University & Luther Seminary

In an effort to provide care and foster community on our campuses amid the COVID-19 health crisis, Augsburg University Campus Ministry and the Luther Seminary Pastor’s Office are partnering to offer opportunities to strengthen the body of Christ in these days. When anxiety is high in our culture, we recognize how critical it is for us to worship, to hear God’s word of promise in Christ Jesus, to articulate our fears and doubts in a supportive community of truth and grace, and to be inspired to live as God’s beloved for the sake of the other.

As the situation with COVID-19 continues to unfold and social distancing become a normative practice to prevent the spread of virus, we in Campus Ministry at Augsburg University and Luther Seminary are working to use technology and social media platforms to offer communal experiences of worship, prayer practices and moments for faith formation, and online gatherings centered on scripture, support, and the strengthening of the body of Christ. We will seek to do this in a variety of ways including live streaming, providing elements of worship available through social media platforms, on-line content, and pastoral care offered by telephone and one line. We will continue to receive prayer requests and will lift them up.

More details are available on the Campus Ministry website blog: https://www.augsburg.edu/campusministry/2020/03/16/providing-care-fostering-community-amid-covid-19/

Status Update on Cancelled Augsburg Events

submitted by cashdar@augsburg.edu

Since Friday afternoon, when Minnesota Gov. Walz and the Minnesota Department of Health announced new measures to slow the spread of COVID-19—and as those guidelines have been updated in the days since—University Events has been working with our campus partners to address bringing Augsburg events into compliance.

This work began immediately on Friday, canceling events for that very evening, including the Asian Celebration Show that had been set to take place in Hoversten Chapel. Event planners are reaching out to discuss events with our campus partners in chronological order. If you are the contact for an upcoming event and you’ve not yet heard from University Events, you will soon. So far, as of Monday night, we’ve addressed all events through Thursday and some—for which event hosts reached out to us proactively—for later in March. We expect to reach many more event hosts during the day today.

The MDH guidelines do not permit any gathering with more than 250 attendees or any event at which participants cannot maintain at least six feet of social distancing at all times. In our venues, that means that even much smaller events will not be able to take place.

When events are cancelled or postponed, we ask that the event hosts do not delete them from the Google Calendars for their office or area. Those calendars are synced to the University Calendar (https://calendar.augsburg.edu), but if events are deleted they will not be removed from it. Instead, please change the title to include CANCELLED or POSTPONED, as appropriate, and that change will be synced to the University Calendar.

We know that many of these cancellations, postponements, and adjustments are and will be disappointing and painful for our campus community, the event hosts, other participants, and our valued community partners. We share in that sorrow, but also know that all of us are doing what we must to promote good health and protect the most vulnerable within our community and among our neighbors.

Please reach out to me or your assigned event planner with questions or concerns.

Medical resources for Uninsured Augsburg Students

submitted by oliverc@augsburg.edu

For Augsburg students who do NOT have insurance, if you have symptoms that you think may be the coronavirus (such as a cough, fever, or shortness of breath), you can contact the People’s Center at 612-332-4973 to discuss next steps. If you are recommended to see a physician at the People’s Center, you can see a physician for a $5 co-pay under the Augsburg contract for uninsured students. Please note that some labwork is covered under the Augsburg contract, and some is not (ask your physician about this).

Further, if you are uninsured, you can contact Health Access MN at 651-645-0215 free for support in applying for state and federal health insurance programs (if you qualify for Medical Assistance, you can receive emergency care and the MA will typically backdate to cover the recent care received).

More information on medical care, as well as resources for coping and mental health support, can be found on the CWC “Coping with the Coronavirus” webpage.

Rumor Has It . . . .

submitted by detloff@augsburg.edu

Some of you may have heard that the CWC office is very busy and not able to see students — that is not true! We currently do have a wait list for ongoing regular counseling appointments, but that does not mean students cannot be seen at all. What it means is that when you contact our office we will find a 30 minute time for you to meet with one of our counselors to determine what help you may need immediately and provide support and resources for you. These 30 minute appointments (depending on your schedule) can usually be scheduled within 24 – 48 hours of contacting the CWC office 612-330-1707. Additionally, we have an after-hours service available whenever the CWC office is closed (evenings, weekends, breaks) where you can speak with a counselor by phone with ProtoCall Services. ProtoCall can be reached by calling the CWC office at 612-330-1707 and pressing option 1. Most important, if you are feeling unsafe and/or worried about the safety of someone else we will see you right away. So please do not listen to the rumors that we are not seeing students because we are too busy. We will do the best we can to see everyone as quickly as possible.

Coil Binding now available

submitted by suter@augsburg.edu

The Augsburg Copy Center now has the machinery and supplies to make plastic coil (spiral) bound books in addition to our comb bound books!

Coil Binding tends to be a little bit more sturdy and will last longer, as well coil bound books can be fully folded over where that cannot be done on comb bound books. Coil binding is a little bit more of a permanent solution, it cannot be re-opened to add/remove pages after the binding is complete without using a new coil like you could with comb bound.

Pricing will be the same as we charge for Comb Binding (all prices are always subject to change). A coil binding will be $1.00 or $1.25 with a clear plastic cover and black plastic back cover (printer/paper costs no included).

If you have any questions on what type of binding would work best the copy center is always available to help answer your questions.

Have Extra Bags You Don’t Want?

submitted by keenern@augsburg.edu

Any kind you have (plastic, paper, cloth/reusable) is greatly appreciated. You can drop them off at the cupboard during our open hours generally 10-4 mon-fri or at the donation bin located in Christiensen lobby near Einstein’s. Thank you!

Apply for LEAD Fellows Internship

submitted by tarisl@augsburg.edu

The application for LEAD Fellows Interns for the academic year 2020-2021 is now open!

The LEAD Fellows program is a great opportunity for students to develop their own leadership and civic agency through gaining meaningful work experience in community-focused organizations. LEAD Fellows have the support of a cohort of peers and Sabo Center staff as they discover what it means to be engaged citizens and critical thinkers. Fellows commit to bi-weekly meetings with the cohort as well as 2 (2 day) retreats annually, and can work up to 20 hours a week at their LEAD placement during the academic year.

Eligible students will be in their 1st or 2nd year with at least 2 years left in undergrad here at Augsburg, and interested in leadership development and social change work. The application will remain open through the week of April 6th.

Announcing the Winner of the Mitchell Prize for Poetry

submitted by green@augsburg.edu

The Augsburg English Department is pleased to announce that the winner of this year’s John R. Mitchell / Academy of American Poets Prize is Taiwana Shambley for the set of three poems entitled “The Market on Maryland Avenue,” “How to Love an Alcoholic in Two Parts, Ending with a Drunk Stumbling Down Maryland Avenue,” and “Identity Circle in Three Parts, Ending with a Trek Through the Antarctic Desert.” The prize honors the late English professor and poet, John Mitchell, and was established by his family.

Poet and Carleton Professor emerita of Theater and Dance Mary Moore Easter, who judged this year’s entries, “found original phrases, skillful observation, and vivid imagery throughout” Shambley’s poems. She also noted that she “enjoyed exploring the minds of this group of [Augsburg] poets,” who submitted their work for consideration.

Please join us in congratulating Taiwana Shambley on winning this notable honor, which carries with it a $100 award. Mary Moore Easter will read with Shambley on the evening of Wed, 25 March, at 7pm in Gundale Chapel, Hagfors. A reception will precede the event at 6:30. Easter will also sign copies of her book, The Body of the World. All are welcome.

The Christensen Professor Search

submitted by pribbeno@augsburg.edu

I am grateful for the many members of our community who participated in the campus visits by the three finalists for the Christensen Professor. I especially want to thank Pastor Sonja Hagander and the search committee – Professor Lori Hale, Professor Jeremy Myers, Dean Ryan Haaland, Chief Inclusion Officer Joanne Reeck, Chief HR Officer Dawn Miller, and student Ian Heseltine – for their good and thoughtful work throughout this important process.

After careful consideration of the many gifts and experiences our finalists offered, I have decided that we have not yet found the next incumbent for this singular role at Augsburg. We therefore will pause the search for now and return to an active process in the new academic year. I know that the right person is out there to build on the legacy of Dr. David Tiede and Dr. Martha Stortz, the first two Christensen Professors – and we will find that person when the time is right.
