Student Government COVID-19 Resolution

submitted by adebanjm@augsburg.edu

Greetings Augsburg Community. I hope all is well with you at this time and you have had a lovely Palm Sunday. I also pray you have a reason to smile on this blessed Miracle Monday morning.

Below you will find an all-important document attached. This document has been composed by Augsburg Day Student Government, but is based off of the information/opinions gathered from a campus-wide petition, extensive communication with student leaders, and a pair of submitted polls from the Day Student Body. This document was then discussed among a panel of ADSG’s finest constituents and voted upon last Friday, April 3rd.

ADSG is an administration initially established to further the educational goals and general welfare of the Augsburg community. We operate in all areas on campus, including environmental action, university finances, and immigration efforts.
My role as The Student Advocate deems me as the elected official to address student concerns; the elected official to serve as liaison for all students in need of representation.

In the first resolution, we came forward to show our support for Augsburg University’s decisions in light of this pandemic. We also came forward to make requests such as: The continuation of housing and dining services; Guaranteed pay for student workers scheduled on the week of march 23rd; Prorated refunds from meal plans, parking passes and residential housing; and the request for a Guaranteed Commencement ceremony once MDH Policy permits.

This next resolution also presents a set of requests, but they pertain more to the individual struggles we students are facing during this stay-at-home order. They include: an alternative and alleviated grading system; guaranteed pay for student workers; and reimbursement for students who already purchased a cap and gown.

Please click the link below, take the time to read said document, and reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns.

With Love,
Miracle Adebanjo
The Executive Board

The Strommen Center is open for business (virtually)

submitted by lgeorge@augsburg.edu

Welcome back students! The Strommen Center is open for business & we have new & improved online career services for you.

The Strommen Center has built and is implementing a few new resources for students. I want to draw your attention to the following:

-Regular employment communications for positions that need to be filled immediately. We are aware that many students have lost employment and still need to generate income. We are working with employer partners, listservs, and staffing agencies to find opportunities for students.

-An updated Strommen Community Moodle site with resources for students, job boards, and employment information. Please take a look and let us know what else you might need. (https://moodle.augsburg.edu/moodlecommunity/course/view.php?id=1095)

-Increased virtual coaching sessions. We are working with some partnering organizations, like UpTurnships, and professional career coaches who are offering their services pro bono. We will be using Zoom and Google Hangouts for these sessions. You can make appointments on Handshake.

-Virtual Drop-In Appointments using Zoom with Peer Advisors begin on April 7, 10 am – 3:45 pm.

-Online workshops centered on connection to industry professionals, alumni, and career development curriculum. These events will be posted on Handshake.

We have also put together a specific task force to monitor employment and internship trends for this summer and to develop strategies for supporting students looking for positions and specifically graduating seniors looking to transition to their first post-academic opportunity. Our mission is to create a structure for coaching and advising students on post academic opportunities whether that is employment, graduate school, or volunteer service.

The Strommen team has been working on these items and a number of other things to be prepared to serve the student body. Please let us know what is on your mind and what else you might need.

Support the Brian Coyle Center Food Shelf

submitted by peacock@augsburg.edu

The Brian Coyle Center is continuing to operate its food shelf despite closing down all other programming. Unsurprisingly, they have seen a dramatic increase in the number of people coming to receive food and expect those numbers will continue to rise. They are struggling to meet the demand. Due to safety concerns, the Brian Coyle Center is no longer accepting food donations, which means they are only receiving food for distribution by purchasing it from partner food banks.

Please help meet the increasing need for food in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood by making a donation today. Each $1 donated allows the Brian Coyle Center to purchase $7 worth of food for distribution to neighbors. To donate, go to https://pillsburyunited.org/covid19/. Use the Comments section to designate your gift for the Brian Coyle Center Food Shelf. Thank you for supporting our community at this critical time.

Update on Internships and Augsburg Experience

submitted by tilton@augsburg.edu

The Strommen Center has been in communication with the Registrar, Academic Deans, and Chief Student Success Officer to create a plan to accommodate students during this unusual circumstance and to honor the work they have already put into their internships. An email has been sent to all Faculty Supervisors of students currently completing internships.

As you are aware, we recognize that students are likely to be nervous about their futures, including what is happening with internships that they are currently registered for.

On Friday, March 20th we emailed all students who are currently registered for an academic spring internship or a 0 – credit Augsburg Experience. The message in the email included the following text:

In this time of uncertainty, we want you to know that we are here to support you in completing your spring internship.

Since you are registered for a spring internship, the University wants you to know that if your internship site is closed or you are no longer able to meet your hours because of issues related to the coronavirus, Augsburg will honor the work you have already completed.

Please work with your faculty supervisor to determine what needs to happen for credit to be granted. Any student who was using their internship to meet the Augsburg Experience requirement will be granted Augsburg Experience.

For those students that are able to continue to work at their internship you should complete your commitment.

If you have questions, please contact Sandy Tilton, Employer Relations & Operations Associate at 612-330-1472 or email strommen.internships@augsburg.edu

Watch out for phishing and scams during this time

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

Hackers and cybercriminals often use current events as a basis for their attacks. Unfortunately, they are now leveraging the hype and fear around the Covid-19 pandemic to spread malware (malicious software), and steal passwords and data. Be on the lookout for Covid-19-related scams in emails, text messages, phone calls and on social media. The following tips can help protect you from these scams and attacks:

== When in doubt, throw it out. ==

o Avoid suspicious links and attachments in emails, tweets, posts, news stories and online advertising. Delete suspicious emails and/or click the spam button, as appropriate.

== Think before you act. ==

o Be wary of communications that implore you to act immediately, offer something that sounds too good to be true, or ask for personal information. “Special” offers claiming a coronavirus cure or offering free or low cost health insurance may be fraudulent.

o Only open files or attachments from trusted and expected sources. Malicious Covid-19 related documents and infection maps have already been used to compromise systems and spread malware.

o Verify a sender’s email address before clicking on email links or replying.

o Hover over links to see the real destination

== Use trusted sources. ==

o Stick to legitimate, trusted government websites or news sources for up-to-date, fact-based information about COVID-19.

https://inside.augsburg.edu/outbreak-planning/

https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/index.html

o Disinformation campaigns can spread discord, manipulate the public conversation, influence policy development, and/or disrupt markets.

o Covid-19 themed websites (website names that contain “corona,” “covid19”, or something similar) are 50% more likely to be malicious than other sites.

Status Update on Canceled Augsburg Events

submitted by cashdar@augsburg.edu

As the Minnesota Department of Health shared new measures to slow the spread of COVID-19—and as those guidelines remain in place—University Events has been working with our campus partners to address bringing Augsburg events into compliance.

As of Wednesday night, we’ve contacted all event hosts with events through May 1 and some—for which event hosts reached out to us proactively—for later in May. If you have an event scheduled prior to May 1 and haven’t heard from your planner please reach out to them. If you are hosting an event know you can independently cancel your event. If you decide to cancel your event please notify your planner as soon as possible so they can assist with navigating the cancellation.

There are three alternatives we are discussing with event hosts:

1. Live Stream / Video Conference (or other alternate modality) – Some events can be conducted online, via conference call, or in other ways that do not require face-to-face interaction.

2. Postpone – For events that will be postponed, we are asking event hosts to hold off on rescheduling for specific future dates at this time. Augsburg will be monitoring the situation and University Events will be in touch with updates about rescheduling.

3. Cancel – Many events won’t be able to be rescheduled for a number of reasons.

At this time we are not scheduling in-person events or rescheduling events that would take place March 26 – July 31, 2020. University Events is scheduling and planning virtual events. Fill out the event form for your virtual event and a planner will be assigned to you.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Packages on Campus

submitted by suter@augsburg.edu

STUDENTS
If you had a package delivered during spring break or have something that will be delivered to campus and you are either not planning on returning to campus due to COVID-19 we have a couple ways to resolve this.

1. We can return the package to the sender as unclaimed which should result in a refund of your purchase or a message from the sender.
2. If your package was shipped via the United States Postal Service (USPS) we ARE able to forward your package if you provide us an address to send it to.
3. If your package was shipped via UPS, FedEx, Amazon or other carrier there is no included forwarding so we would have to send it via UPS. Prices range from $4-$25 depending on how fast you would like to ship/weight/size. We can take card #’s over the phone if you would like to use this option.

STAFF/FACULTY
Please let us know when you or someone in your department will be in and we will deliver in that time. Otherwise feel free to pick up your package if you will be around. If neither of those options work refer to the student package guide above.

Thank You

Mental Health Tips During These Stressful Times

submitted by detloff@augsburg.edu

Here are a few good tips from the Center for Disease Control regarding things you can do to support yourself:

Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs
Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.
Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.

Call your healthcare provider if stress gets in the way of your daily activities for several days in a row. Check out the CWC webpage for additional resources.

Helpline: We Answer Your Questions

submitted by hermansb@augsburg.edu

We have launched a new Augsburg University Helpline to handle questions from students, faculty and staff. The intent is not to circumvent offices with responsibility for various campus functions but to help students (and others) navigate university systems in the complexity of our current situation.

The Helpline will be open from noon-4pm each day during this first week (March 23 -27).

To reach us, call 612-474-3100.

We will expand Helpline hours beginning March 30th and will provide updated information in A-mail and on Inside Augsburg.

Doug Rosenberg departure (Thanks for all your work, Doug)

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

Yesterday afternoon would have been Doug Rosenberg’s send-off celebration. Doug Rosenberg accepted a new role with Common Hope in Saint Paul, and is leaving his role as Manager of Purchasing and Central Services at Augsburg after today.

Instead of a party, Doug spent the hour on Zoom with me making sure Augsburg had all the information needed to continue our strong relationships with our service partners. During this time of transition, we are in the process of asking existing staff members from other parts of the division to take on various responsibilities in purchasing and central services. If you have a question about who is handling the various roles Doug has filled over the past two years, please let me know.

In the meantime, please join me in wishing Doug all the best in his new position at Common Hope!

Best regards,
Rebecca

Update on Internship and Augsburg Experience

submitted by tilton@augsburg.edu

Status Update on Canceled Augsburg Events

submitted by cashdar@augsburg.edu

On Monday, March 16 the Minnesota Department of Health shared new measures to slow the spread of COVID-19—and as those guidelines remain in place—University Events has been working with our campus partners to address bringing Augsburg events into compliance.

As of Tuesday night, we’ve contacted all event hosts with events through April 18 and some—for which event hosts reached out to us proactively—for later in April. If you have an event scheduled prior to April 18 and haven’t heard from your planner please reach out to them.

We know that many of these cancellations, postponements, and adjustments are and will be disappointing for our campus community, the event hosts, other participants, and our valued community partners. We share in that sorrow, but also know that all of us are doing what we must to promote good health and protect the most vulnerable within our community and among our neighbors.

Please reach out to your assigned event planner or me with questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Sarah Cash-Darvell
