High Holy Day Primer

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

Created by Interfaith Fellow ’17-’19 Wendy Goldberg, to help Augsburg know about this big season for Jews in our community.
We are entering the Jewish High Holy Day season, which runs for the month of Tishrei this year from Monday evening, Sept. 6 – Sept. 29, including Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot.
For college students, being away from home for these holidays can highlight the homesickness and the yearning to be in the nest, and for some, quite the opposite. If you celebrate Christmas, imagine staying on campus while most students return home. If you celebrate Ramadan, this season is similar to that month of observance.
How to be an ally: We encourage you to have conversations with your Jewish students and colleagues about their observances. If you are aware that students or colleagues are Jewish, it would likely be welcomed to ask them how they observe the holidays and what they mean to them. You could also move important meetings or events away from Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
2021 dates for these holidays:
Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Sept. 6 and ends at nightfall on Sept. 8. Some American Jews celebrate for one day, others for two.
Yom Kippur begins an hour before sundown on Sept. 15 and ends at nightfall on Sept. 16. After a 25-hour fast and being in synagogue services, the feast goes into the evening, like an Eid meal. This is the holiest of holy days and for those observing, they would not do work for these 25 hours.
Sukkot begins at sundown on Mon, Sept. 20, and the first two days are considered holy days where some Jews don’t work, use electricity, etc. Sukkot ends at sundown on Sept. 28 for some, and Sept. 29 for others.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Wendy Goldberg: wengold66@gmail.com or 612-386-1191. To connect students with Jewish events or community contact Rivka Buchbinder buchbinr@augsburg.edu of Minnesota Hillel-Augsburg or University of Minnesota Hillel, 612-379-4026 hillel@umn.edu.

The Impact of COVID on Faculty

submitted by greenj@augsburg.edu

Please join Ellie Olson, Director of Augsburg’s Center for Wellness and Counseling, for her session “Preparing to Be Back in the Classroom: the Impact of COVID on Faculty” this Tuesday, August 31st from 3-4pm on campus in the Marshall Room (Christensen Center). Despite our desire to return to campus with a sense of comfort and predictability, the semester ahead seems likely to be one of continuing challenge and transition. But we HAVE learned some things from the past eighteen months that we can use to our advantage as we approach the coming year. This session will create space for faculty to name and reflect on the emotional and cognitive impact COVID has had on them, with guidance on how to manage and respond to that impact as you enter the classroom again. The target audience for this session is teaching faculty and staff, but the session is open to all.

This session is part of the Faculty Development Committee’s “Promoting Faculty Balance” Series

Finally, during the repair work, a crew member will be stationed on the 22nd Avenue sidewalk near Memorial Hall. The sidewalk is expected to still be usable during that time.

Lindell Library Lower Level Flooded Early Thursday Morning; Cleanup in Process

submitted by sitarami@augsburg.edu

The lower level of Lindell Library flooded with an inch of water early Thursday morning. A plug snapped off from the fire sprinkler line of Lindell Library’s water system, causing clean water to run into the mechanical room and the rest of the lower level. The entire space was flooded and nearly two feet of water filled an elevator. Public Safety learned of the flooding at 4:30 a.m. Thursday. The fire department, which was alerted by sprinkler system sensors, and Augsburg’s Facilities employees were able to shut the water off about 6 a.m.

First thing Thursday morning, Augsburg’s custodial team, who have been prepping campus for the return of students, removed much of the water. A professional sanitization company is finishing removing the remaining moisture and reducing humidity in the space. Augsburg will be doing environmental testing. The librarians and archivists have been going through the collection and archives housed on the lower level. Items that were higher up on shelving weren’t damaged, but some items were impacted.

Augsburg is working with professional sanitization and environmental firms to assess when the space will be usable.

submitted by greenj@augsburg.edu

Please join Ellie Olson, Director of Augsburg’s Center for Wellness and Counseling, for her session “Preparing to Be Back in the Classroom: the Impact of COVID on Faculty” this Tuesday, August 31st from 3-4pm on campus in the Marshall Room (Christensen Center). But we HAVE learned some things from the past eighteen months that we can use to our advantage as we approach the coming year. The target audience for this session is teaching faculty and staff, but the session is open to all.

Move-In Parking Restrictions

submitted by erchula@augsburg.edu

Friday August 20 – 8th St S Restricted
To help provide space for students moving into Anderson and Luther we ask that people do not park on 8th St. For those moving in, we ask that you use 8th St to unload your vehicles then move them into a parking lot to continue to provide space for others who need to unload their vehicles.

Thursday August 26th and Friday August 27th – Lot D Reserved
For both Thursday August 26 and Friday August 27th Lot D will be reserved for First Year students and their families. All vehicles will need to be cleared out of Lot D by 6 a.m. on August 26th and August 27th – any vehicles remaining in Lot D after 6 a.m. each day may be relocated to Lot L at the owner’s expense.

Friday August 27th and Monday August 30th – Lot E Closed
Visitor and accessibility spaces in Lot E will be closed August 27 and August 30 for class pictures that are being taken on the steps of Old Main. Any visitors, vendors or contractors should be directed to park in Lot A on these days.

We will not be enforcing permits in our surface lots until September, with the exception of reserved parking spaces, so all other surface lots will be open to students, staff and faculty during the move-in days. Please email publicsafety@augsburg.edu with any questions about parking during move-in.

Indoor Mask Mandate in Effect at Augsburg

submitted by sitarami@augsburg.edu

All students, staff, and faculty are required to wear face coverings in indoor campus spaces, except when eating in dining areas or when in one’s own residential unit or individual office with the door closed. This applies to all U.S. Augsburg locations. (International Augsburg locations are following local protocols.) Masks or face coverings are not required outdoors.

Over the weekend of July 31-August 1, the regional case rates in both Hennepin and Ramsey counties moved to a “substantial” transmission rate (between 50 and 99.99 cases per 100,000 population over 7 days, as defined by the CDC). As a result, Augsburg reinstated the indoor face covering requirement, effective Tuesday, August 3.
