Farewell to Catherina Kipper

submitted by tollina@augsburg.edu

Catherina Kipper, URGO’s Prehealth Professions Specialist, will be returning to the University of MN, having accepted a position as an Assistant Director of Advising in the College of Liberal Arts. In the seven plus years that Catherina worked at Augsburg she established a stellar prehealth science advising program and assisted countless students and alums with their applications and interviews to various prehealth science programs. She also served as the advisor to the newly created and active Pre-Dentistry and Pre-PA clubs.

Students sought Catherina out because she provided honest and thorough advice about how to be a competitive prehealth applicant. She is particularly gifted as a writing coach, painstakingly reading multiple drafts of statements and secondary applications, always helping students find their own voices. Because of her commitment and knowledge, more Augsburg students and alums gained admissions to prehealth programs and more of them had multiple offers.

All of her staff and faculty colleagues immediately noticed her professionalism, deep knowledge of the health professions, dedication to student advancement, cross cultural competency and generous nature. As the only other staff member in URGO, Catherina accepted multiple responsibilities to ensure that the office functioned with a high quality of service–always her standard.

We thank her for her dedicated service to Augsburg and wish her the best in her new position.

Please join us on Thursday, July 7th in Hagfors 101 for cake and well wishes from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

Faculty Applications for Travel September Through November Due Friday, July 1

submitted by reederm@augsburg.edu

Because of the temporary reduction in full-time faculty professional development funds allocated to Augsburg’s Faculty Development Program (aka CTL), the Program has created a grant review procedure and policy to ensure equitable funding for 2022-2023. (see link to full policy on the CTL website below)

The biggest change for faculty are the new application deadlines. To ensure
equitable distribution of grant funding, the FDC will be reviewing grants in bulk four times during the year. The deadline for your grant application depends primarily on WHEN you will be traveling/having expenses. Please note that you may submit a grant application at any time before your preferred deadline; however grants will not be reviewed until the deadline closes.

Round 2 Deadline: July 1, 2022 (for travel/expenses Sep – Nov 2022)
Round 3 Deadline: October 1, 2022 (for travel/expenses Dec 2022 – Feb 2023)
Round 4 Deadline: January 1, 2023 (for travel/expenses Mar – May 2023)

There is additional and more specific information on the CTL website (see link below) which should answer most of your questions! Please contact CTL (ctl@augsburg.edu) if you have any questions about this temporary policy or would like more information.

HR: Performance Review Information

submitted by vachta@augsburg.edu

Staff needing to complete a 90-Day or Annual performance review can initiate their review through the Employee Toolkit on the Human Resources website at https://sites.augsburg.edu/hr/employees/performance-reviews/

Performance reviews will no longer be facilitated by the Hirezon platform.

The performance review form automatically saves your work every 2 minutes. If you need to access a form you previously saved simply launch the performance review form and choose “Load a saved form”. Performance reviews are being conducted through Augsburg’s Webdocs Forms – emails generated by Webdocs forms will originate from “Augsburg Online Forms” (onlineforms@augsburg.edu).

Human Resources is refining and retooling the annual review process and looks forward to robust campus-wide staff annual reviews in the summer of 2023.

HR: Website Organization and Saved Forms

submitted by vachta@augsburg.edu

We’ve reorganized content on the HR website in an effort to improve clarity and make important tools easier to find.

Forms, policies, staff performance reviews, and payroll information can be found in the “Employee Toolkit”.

IT and HR are working closely together to build data-driven secure forms and approval workflows, reducing the risk of clerical errors, increasing data security, and improving the experience of employees and supervisors. In our ongoing efforts to streamline and go paperless many of our paper and electronic forms are being converted into Webdocs Forms which allows the forms to be saved directly to the employee’s electronic personnel records. If you receive emails from “Augsburg Online Forms” (onlineforms@augsburg.edu) they are being generated by these Webdocs Forms approval paths.

We are in the process of creating and posting new content, especially with the upcoming rollout of SmartRecruiters. The HR team looks forward to providing the most important information and tools for Augsburg employees in one central location!

If you have any questions or feedback please contact hr@augsburg.edu!

Center for Adult and Continuing Education (CACE) Hosts Largest APSI in Augsburg’s History

submitted by updike@augsburg.edu

The Center for Adult and Continuing Education (CACE) is very excited to be hosting both virtual and in-person week-long workshops for Advanced Placement (AP) teachers this summer. These Advanced Placement Summer Institutes (APSI) help teachers learn about the AP curriculum. The APSI at has taken many forms and has been run at Augsburg for more than 25 years!

We currently have more than 370 teachers participating in 18 different VIRTUAL workshops this week.

The week of June 27-30, we are excited to welcome 95 teachers to campus in 12 different AP subjects. While this is a smaller group than we had last time we were on campus (2019), it is exciting to be back in place with the teachers on campus! These 95 teachers will be coming from 21 different states and countries with the furthest people travelling from Kuwait and Nigeria.

We are also preparing for the second VIRTUAL APSI the week of July 11-15. This APSI currently has more than 300 teachers registered in 22 different workshops. We anticipate the size of this APSI to grow as we enter into July.

In total over the three APSIs, we will be welcoming close to 800 people to Augsburg this summer (both virtually and in-person). They are currently “visiting” us from 28 different countries and 47 states/territories. If you would like to learn more about the APSI, we invite you to check out our website or email us at apsi@augsburg.edu.

Faculty Applications for Travel September Through November Due Friday, July 1

submitted by reederm@augsburg.edu

Because of the temporary reduction in full-time faculty professional development
funds allocated to Augsburg’s Faculty Development Program (aka CTL), the Program
has created a grant review procedure and policy to ensure equitable funding for 2022-
2023. (see link to full policy on the CTL website below)

The biggest change for faculty are the new application deadlines. To ensure
equitable distribution of grant funding, the FDC will be reviewing grants in bulk four
times during the year. The deadline for your grant application depends primarily on
WHEN you will be traveling/having expenses. Please note that you may submit a grant
application at any time before your preferred deadline; however grants will not be
reviewed until the deadline closes.

Round 2 Deadline: July 1, 2022 (for travel/expenses Sep – Nov 2022)
Round 3 Deadline: October 1, 2022 (for travel/expenses Dec 2022 – Feb 2023)
Round 4 Deadline: January 1, 2023 (for travel/expenses Mar – May 2023)

There is additional and more specific information on the CTL website (see link below)
which should answer most of your questions! Please contact CTL (ctl@augsburg.edu)
if you have any questions about this temporary policy or would like more information.

Launching the V-Portfolio: Why Vocation is Important

submitted by weber3@augsburg.edu

The V-Portfolio Coordinator, Jon Bates, has been furthering the work of the V-Portfolio alongside the directors with the centers of commitment at Augsburg University; the Sabo Center, Strommen Center, Center for Global Education & Experience, and the Christensen Center for Vocation.

The V-Portfolio is essentially an online E-Portfolio but with a foundation of using vocation as the grounding for students, hence the title, Vocation Portfolio.

Within the updated V-Portfolio website students are introduced or reintroduced to the term vocation, as it is defined as, “the way you are equipped, empowered, called, and driven to make our world a better place for all living things.” Colloquially vocation has been coined as a term that means the type of career or lifestyle one aspires to have. Vocation is something that happens in the future and begins with the individual. The V-Portfolio offers a different definition of vocation. As through the V-Portfolio, vocation is framed to focus on the present and is in response to the world, the neighbor. This is important work as our vocation is compelled to move because of the neighbor and that we get to decide how to respond using our own gifts, knowledge, and talents. Check out the link below to learn more about the recent launch of the V-Portfolio.

Tomorrow: Why the Workplace is the Perfect Place to Discuss the Undiscussables, Race + Racism

submitted by gocmen@augsburg.edu

When: June 16, 2022 11:00 am – 12:00 pm CT
Level: Intermediate
Presenters: Margaret Greenberg, The Business of Race, LLC  |  Gina Greenlee, The Business of Race, LLC
Cost: Free
Registration: https://forumworkplaceinclusion.org/webinars/what-is-your-x-why-the-workplace-is-the-perfect-place-to-discuss-the-undiscussables-race-racism/

Talking about race and racism at work historically has been taboo. However, we can’t solve what we don’t talk about. It’s time for a new approach.
For nearly 60 years, workplaces have focused on diversity specific to gender and many historically underrepresented groups. Much of that focus has been on education, training, and awareness building at the individual level. What organizations haven’t devoted equal attention to is RACIAL diversity and how to change the SYSTEM of work—business policies and practices—to create and sustain a racially diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace.
While no single societal sector can disrupt the status quo on its own, innovative businesses and courageous leaders can lead the way. No matter your racial identity, no matter your role or level in your organization, you can do SOMETHING. We don’t profess to know what that “something” is for you but in this session, you will learn two actionable tools to uncover it.

Learning Outcomes
Explore racial diversity through both an asset and business lens
Create a business case for racial diversity that will engage your multiple stakeholder groups
Facilitate strategy sessions using the SOAR (strengths, opportunities, aspirations, + results) framework

Faculty Applications for Travel This Summer Due Wednesday, June 15

submitted by reederm@augsburg.edu

Because of the temporary reduction in full-time faculty professional development funds allocated to Augsburg’s Faculty Development Program (aka CTL), the Program has created a grant review procedure and policy to ensure equitable funding for 2022-2023. (see link to full policy on the CTL website below)

The biggest change for faculty are the new application deadlines. To ensure equitable distribution of grant funding, the FDC will be reviewing grants in bulk four times during the year. The deadline for your grant application depends primarily on WHEN you will be traveling/having expenses. Please note that you may submit a grant application at any time before your preferred deadline; however grants will not be reviewed until the deadline closes.

Round 1 Deadline: June 15, 2022 (for travel/expenses June – Aug 2022)
Round 2 Deadline: July 1, 2022 (for travel/expenses Sep – Nov 2022)
Round 3 Deadline: October 1, 2022 (for travel/expenses Dec 2022 – Feb 2023)
Round 4 Deadline: January 1, 2023 (for travel/expenses Mar – May 2023)

There is additional and more specific information on the CTL website (see link below) which should answer most of your questions! Please contact CTL (ctl@augsburg.edu) if you have any questions about this temporary policy or would like more information.

Today: Garden Workshop 12-1 p.m.

submitted by castilla@augsburg.edu

Come join the Environmental Stewardship Team and Augsburg Community Gardeners today from 12-1PM to learn more about the fruit growing in the garden. Mike Slinkard will share his knowledge about growing fruit and student Environmental Stewardship Coordinators will point out the edible fruit in the garden from ripening strawberries, to raspberry and apple fall favorites, and the hidden secret of serviceberries by the Hagfors benches. Learn about the garden, meet gardeners and ESC student interns, and enjoy some time outside with the greater Augsburg Community! No garden expertise and experience necessary! Cost is free of course. We will meet by the Hagfors doors that exit to the garden.

Weather Advisory: This workshop is going to be held when there is an Excessive Heat Warning in effect. Portions of the workshop will be held outside, but we will do some parts inside to escape the heat. It is recommended that you dress appropriately and to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. Water and rest breaks will be taken.
