What to do After a Negative COVID-19 test

submitted by sitarami@augsburg.edu

According to the CDC, if you receive a negative result from a COVID-19 test result, you should continue to take precautions against COVID-19, including washing your hands often, keeping 6 feet of distance between yourself and those you do not live with, and wearing a mask in public.

If you were in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, you need to stay home for 14 days after your last contact with that person, even if your test result is negative, the Minnesota Department of Health states. This is to avoid exposing others if your test result was a false negative. If you develop symptoms after your negative test result, you will need to get tested again.

About Negative COVID-19 Test Results:

According to the CDC, if you receive a negative result from a COVID-19 test result, that means that you probably were not infected at the time the sample was collected. You should continue to take precautions against COVID-19, including washing your hands often, keeping 6 feet of distance between yourself and those you do not live with, and wearing a mask in public.

Due to high COVID-19 Rates, Minnesota Health Officials Encourage Pre-Thanksgiving Testing

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

This past week, Augsburg’s on-campus transmission rate again moved up to the moderate transmission range, and we continue to receive reports of positive COVID-19 cases and exposures to people with COVID-19.

Augsburg already is largely operating according to Minnesota Department of Health recommendations for moderate transmission levels. We continue to monitor the on-campus case rates to determine whether additional action will be needed. (See the COVID-19 status blog for a link to the MDH transmission level guidance.)

Your best protection, as always, is to avoid close contact by wearing masks and maintaining 6 feet of distance when gathering with others.

In addition, over the next two weeks, Augsburg is offering free, on-campus saliva testing in coordination with the State of Minnesota. State health officials have expanded testing across Minnesota in an effort to help people (particularly 18-to-35 year olds, who often don’t have symptoms and don’t even know they are infectious) to determine whether they have the virus before traveling or visiting family and friends at Thanksgiving.

Additional information and links are available in this week’s COVID-19 Status Blog.

Social Gatherings Drive COVID-19 Cases to Record Levels in Minnesota

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

Recent Minnesota Department of Health data show record-high levels of COVID-19 cases in Minnesota, and a primary cause, according to the the State Health Commissioner, is social gatherings — not big events and large crowds, but small groups of people getting together without masks and physical distancing.

To protect yourself while community transmission is high, wear a mask, watch your distance, wash your hands frequently, and avoid group gatherings. As you make plans for the upcoming Thanksgiving break, review the safety guidelines provided by the Minnesota Department of Health — you can find the link in this week’s COVID-19 Status Blog (see link, below).

Plan for a Safe Halloween and Help Slow the Spread of COVID-19

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in the region and across the United States. Although Augsburg has been able to keep its 14-day on-campus case rate below 1%, reports of positive cases are increasing among students who live and study off campus.

Public health officials are urging people to make plans to keep themselves, their families, and friends safe for the upcoming holidays. For those planning to go home for the Thanksgiving break, it’s best to be smart and safe now so that you don’t risk taking COVID-19 home to your families at Thanksgiving.

Ongoing Monitoring of On-Campus COVID-19 Case Rate

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

Augsburg continues to see COVID-19 transmission and new confirmed cases connected with the on-campus cases identified over the past several weeks. A number of new cases have already been confirmed since the October 10 COVID-19 Dashboard was published, so Augsburg’s on-campus student case rate for last week is higher that the rate reported in the Dashboard. The transmission rate will be updated in the October 17 report, after pending tests are finalized.

To address rising on-campus transmission levels, Augsburg took a number of actions last week and continues to monitor reports of cases and exposures. For more information, see the October 12 COVID-19 Status Blog, which links to the dashboard published this past weekend.

Face Mask and Hand Sanitizer to be Provided Soon

submitted by sitarami@augsburg.edu

All students, faculty, and staff in Minneapolis and Rochester soon will receive one face mask. Those in Minneapolis also will receive one personal hand sanitizer in time for the beginning of the fall semester. Hand sanitizer refill stations will be located at Minneapolis campus building entrances. Classes start September 2. Effective July 25, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz mandated face coverings be worn in all public indoor spaces and indoor businesses, as well as outdoors when physical distancing is not possible to maintain. All students, staff, faculty, and visitors must wear face coverings in any common areas while on Augsburg property. Outdoors, this means anytime you are within 6’ of other people, you must be wearing a face covering. Indoors, this means the only places you may be without a face covering on campus is alone within your personal office (or students within their residential unit), or in dining spaces while eating or drinking. We recommend having multiple face coverings (3-5 or more cloth coverings is ideal) that you keep in convenient places—your car, office, and in your bag/backpack. Using cloth coverings enables you to wash them regularly so you always have a clean face covering available.

Augsburg Under Modified Operations Plan Until Further Notice

submitted by sitarami@augsburg.edu

Augsburg is complying with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s Stay Home executive order and is working under a modified operations plan until further notice.

Students have been asked to move out of the residence halls, unless granted exceptions, and their fob access has been turned off to all campus buildings except their residence hall.

Employees (including faculty, staff, and student workers) whose roles are deemed critical to university operations will retain access to campus buildings for work purposes.

No guests are permitted in campus buildings, including family and friends, except if involved in a prearranged move out of a residence hall.

All staff, faculty and students must wear cloth face masks while in any common areas while on Augsburg property, based on Minnesota Department of Health guidelines updated in April.

Building Access Issues and Facilities Updates

submitted by abounass@augsburg.edu

Some people with current access to campus buildings have had some difficulty getting in because of a problem with card access servers. DPS is working with IT and Augsburg’s vendor to resolve the issues. If you are a critical employee or resident student with access to a campus building and you can’t get in, contact DPS at 612-330-1717 for assistance.

Augsburg is currently functioning under a modified operations plan. Fob access has been turned off except those who have critical work on campus and resident students living on campus. Those who have access are asked to maintain social distancing. Go only where you need to go and only stay on campus to complete your critical tasks. Do not linger on campus. No guests are allowed. Augsburg is trying to minimize people gathering and help custodians focus on cleaning and disinfecting student residential spaces.
Critical employees who are entering a space that’s been marked cleaned and disinfected, please take the sign down and put in a work order to have it cleaned and disinfected. If you plan to work multiple days in a row, please wait until your last visit to make a work order.

Augsburg has cloth masks in stock for critical staff and faculty and resident students. Contact Bryan Massich to receive one. All staff, faculty and students MUST wear cloth face masks while in any common areas while on Augsburg property, based on Minnesota Department of Health guidelines for higher education. Oren Gateway Water

submitted by abounass@augsburg.edu

There were water issues in Oren Gateway on Wednesday caused by a clogged kitchen sink overflowing in a residence hall room located on the second floor. Water was turned off to the entire building for approximately one hour. Water damage was sustained in classroom OGC 114 and offices in OGC 115. The drain has been repaired and all water has been turned back on. A water cleanup vendor is onsite to complete water damage cleanup in all affected areas, this should be completed by Thursday. Any questions can be directed to Bryan Massich at 612-280-7447.

Oren Gateway Access

submitted by abounass@augsburg.edu

Access into Oren Gateway Center from street-level doors was not available Tuesday due to a power supply failure in the fob reader, which caused the doors to remain locked. Accessibility paddle access also was not functioning during this time. A new power supply unit was ordered and installed by early afternoon. All door functions are now back to normal operation.

Important: Door Paddles; Don’t need it, don’t touch it.

doorsubmitted by degollad@augsburg.edu

Greetings Augsburg Community,

Augsburg Day Student Government has received multiple complaints regarding the electric door paddles. Students with accessibility needs find themselves unable to use them for reasons such as: them being broken, dead batteries, or jammed because of overuse. We have realized that there are students and faculty that use these accessibility paddles simply for convenience, and without a real need. This is a compliance failure to our campus’ accessibility.

We are aware that some community members may not have a visible physical disability, so there is no need to confront anyone, but to kindly remind ourselves and others about the importance of this issue.

Augsburg must have all door paddles functioning to remain ADA compliant, so please help us to achieve this goal. We are working for a more inclusive campus where everyone does their part. If you have any questions or concerns, please email stugov@augsburg.edu

Sincerely,

Augsburg Day Student Government,
Student Concerns Committee
