Greetings Augsburg Community,
Augsburg Day Student Government has received multiple complaints regarding the electric door paddles. Students with accessibility needs find themselves unable to use them for reasons such as: them being broken, dead batteries, or jammed because of overuse. We have realized that there are students and faculty that use these accessibility paddles simply for convenience, and without a real need. This is a compliance failure to our campus’ accessibility.
We are aware that some community members may not have a visible physical disability, so there is no need to confront anyone, but to kindly remind ourselves and others about the importance of this issue.
Augsburg must have all door paddles functioning to remain ADA compliant, so please help us to achieve this goal. We are working for a more inclusive campus where everyone does their part. If you have any questions or concerns, please email stugov@augsburg.edu
Sincerely,
Augsburg Day Student Government,
Student Concerns Committee

Decisions to cancel classes are made by 6 a.m. for daytime classes and 2 p.m. for evening classes. The University uses the Augsburg Emergency Alerts system to communicate timely information on campus emergencies and class and facility changes due to severe weather. The Augsburg Emergency Alert sends subscribers a text, email, and phone call (subscribers determine which and how many alert types they wish). Only people signed up to these alerts receive them.
After the alert is sent out, information and updates about weather-related class cancellations and closures are posted on the “News” section of the Department of Public Safety website. This information is then shared with television and radio stations, and lastly on Augsburg’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The Admissions Department is thrilled to bring visitors to campus for Transfer Visit Day on Monday, November 11. Our visitors will have 35 spaces marked off for them; once the rest of the lot is filled, we ask that faculty and staff park in Lot L, Lot J, or in the 21st Ave Parking Ramp across Riverside (free day permits are available in the Admission Office this week). In addition, the Admission Office is also providing Metro passes for those who wish to park further away and commute onto campus.

Inspection work will start on Fairview’s property north of Riverside Avenue and end on the sidewalk of 22nd Avenue east of Memorial. Barricades will be put up that may briefly block sidewalk traffic on campus and a safety worker will route pedestrians around the barricades. The work will not impact street traffic on campus. Questions should be directed to Bryan Massich, Facilities Management at 612-280-7447.

Please check http://www.511mn.org for real-time updates. All closures are weather permitting and subject to change.

MnDOT is going to be doing to repair the bridges over Interstate 94 at 22nd Avenue and 25th Avenue in Minneapolis. MnDOT will start repairing the 25th Avenue bridge Oct. 23. It will require overnight closures at the bridge and the closure of 25th Avenue and Riverside Avenue to motorists and pedestrians.
Pedestrians will have to go to 20th Avenue to cross the highway or to the underpass at Franklin Terrace between 8th and 9th Streets to go under the highway. A signed detour will lead people to 20th Avenue.
MnDOT also is installing a temporary pedestrian bridge at 22nd Avenue. This will require closing I-94 during two weekends for about 18 hours to demolish the existing bridge and install the temporary bridge. You will see the details as they are now for the weekend closures below. MnDOT will update the web page as details become more precise.

Many students, faculty and staff saw and heard the individual on the public sidewalk between Christensen Center and Foss. That individual has been at Augsburg before, most typically in the public park; this time choosing to use public sidewalk.
Public Safety and student affairs staff monitored the situation, some students showed up with signs of their own to support a different message.
Free speech provides opportunities for voices we agree with and voices we disagree with. Thanks to the Augsburg community for challenging the message, choosing to ignore the message, and taking care of one another.

A steam leak was discovered on the first floor of Memorial Hall this morning at approximately 10:00am. We were able to respond quickly and isolate the issue. Beginning this evening thru Friday, October 4, the team will be working on the steam leak repair. In order to work on the leak, we have to shut off the steam line that serves Memorial Hall, Sverdrup Hall and Science Hall. With temperatures dropping as low as 38 degrees tonight, the building temperatures will be a little cooler than usual. We plan to have the heat back on by Friday
mid-day. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Bryan
Massich at massich@augsburg.edu. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

A dump truck traveling on Interstate 94 last month struck the pedestrian bridge that goes over I-94 near Augsburg. State officials hope to reopen the pedestrian bridge by early winter. As alternatives, pedestrians can take 20th and 25th avenues south and bicyclists are urged to take the Riverside Avenue Bridge. The truck also hit the 25th Avenue and Riverside Avenue bridges and the west side sidewalk on 25th will remain closed until that bridge is repaired, which is expected to be done by late fall. State officials should be implementing some traffic control changes soon that will allow pedestrians on the west side of the bridge.

First Year move in is on Friday Aug 30 which means there will be some added traffic and parking restrictions on campus. Lots A and D will be reserved for those moving in on Friday; any cars remaining in lots A or D after 2 am on Friday August 30th will be towed to lot L.
Roads on the east side of campus will also be difficult to navigate due to barricades in place to assist with move-in (Butler Pl, 23rd Ave, 22nd Ave, 7 1/2 St, and 7th St). Please plan accordingly when moving around campus and if you are able to, enter campus on the west side to avoid the barricades (8th St, 21st Ave and 6th St).
We encourage Staff and Faculty to utilize Lot L for parking, or to check with your supervisor if you are able to work from home if you are not participating in move-in festivities.
Please visit the Residence Life website for a map of the move-in route to help plan travel (link below).

Our crews responded immediately and determined the pedestrian bridge needs to close. In addition, the southbound right lane of the 25th Avenue bridge also is closed until Aug. 12. The sidewalk and bike lane on the southbound side are also closed. The sidewalk on the northbound side is open. The Riverside Avenue bridge will remain open.
We have crews out Tuesday afternoon working on the bridges.
We realize this is an inconvenience for those who use these bridges, but we need to make sure they are safe before anyone uses them.
For those who rely on the 22nd Avenue pedestrian bridge to cross I-94, we recommend you use the 25th Avenue or 20th Avenue bridges while we determine how long the bridge will be closed. We recommend Riverside Avenue bridge for bicyclists.

Permit Sales FAQs
– Are permits available by the semester?
Yes, permits can be purchased by the semester. Surface lots are split between Fall and Spring; each semester will be half the cost of a year permit. Underground lots are split between Fall, Spring and Summer and each semester costs one third of the year permit
– When can I buy Underground permits?
If you’re a student, underground permits are available on the day you are eligible to purchase surface lot permits. If you’re Staff/Faculty, underground permits are available on Friday, August 16th.
– What is a commuter permit? Is it available for Staff/Faculty?
A commuter permit is in reference to a day student who commutes to campus and does not have on campus housing. These permits are not available for Staff/Faculty
– Are carpool permits available this year?
Yes, a limited number of carpool permits are available this year to Students, Staff and Faculty. They will be available to purchase on the same day as you’re eligible to purchase other permits. Carpool permits cost the same as regular permits (Commuter Student or Staff/Faculty), but the cost is split between those participating. Only one permit is provided for a group of carpool participants.
– I’m a 4th year student and I’m a couple credits short of being listed as a senior, will I be able to buy a permit on the Senior sales date?
No. A student’s class determination (Sophomore, Junior, Senior) is set by the Registrar depending on the amount of credits you have completed, and that information determines what date you are eligible to purchase a permit. If you believe you have been designated as the wrong class, please contact the Registrar.

Permit Sales FAQs
– Am I able to get a discounted permit due to a special circumstance?
No, we do not discount permits.
– Can I get a prorated permit for Underground if I decide to purchase one later in the year?
No, we do not prorate underground permits. The reason for this is because when you purchase an underground permit you are paying for the value of the parking space, not the amount of time spent using the space. As stated in the FAQ post 1 of 2, if you decide to buy one halfway through the year, a limited number of Spring and Summer permits for Luther and Oren underground garages may be available.
– Are there City of Minneapolis permits available for purchase?
Yes. Augsburg is allotted a limited number of city permits for residential students, however, these are not purchased through Augsburg. If a residential student would like to apply for a City permit, they must get a letter verifying on campus residency from Public Safety, then fill out and submit an application to the City of Minneapolis. If you are interested in pursuing a City street permit, please email parking@augsburg.edu; residency letters are issued on a first come, first serve basis.

Our teachers had a great first day on campus. To everyone who helped each of them find Sateren, a classroom, or where to eat lunch…thank you! You may have noticed parking got a little tight on Tuesday. We anticipate parking to be very similar for the rest of this week as our participants are parking in Lots A, D and L. On Friday, we will be welcoming an additional 30 people to campus for an AP Coordinator workshop. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this time of higher demand for parking, and thanks for everything you’re doing to make our teachers feel welcomed at Augsburg! Please email apsi@augsburg.edu with any concerns or questions.
As a reminder, these teachers are coming from 17 states and 3 countries. There are more than 150 school districts represented throughout the week with about 130 teachers residing in MN! This is a great opportunity to showcase Augsburg University and raise Augsburg’s profile with teachers who are working with exceptional students.
