Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.
What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.
Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the projects or innovations and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,000. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) offers $1,000 Academic-Year Research Grants to fund 100 hours of student research. Students who are interested in conducting research during the year are encouraged to seek out ongoing faculty research projects that they may join.
URGO also offers Conference Travel Grants of up to $850 for students who have been accepted to present their research at a professional conference.
Both applications can be found on the URGO website. The funds may be used at any time during the academic year, however the grants are given out on a rolling basis, so we recommend interested students apply in the fall.

Take your winter break to a new level – study abroad!
The winter break program, From Harry Potter to #Brexit: Youth Culture and Social Change in the UK, will examine the connections among popular culture, politics, and youth activism in 20th and 21st century Britain. Travel to the UK from December 28 to January 7!
The course, WST 220, is 4-credits and can fulfill a Humanities credit, or a requirement for WST majors/minors or for Youth Studies minors. This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement.

This workshop is designed to introduce some of the newer features of the Assignment as well as highlight aspects (like advanced grading features) you may be unfamiliar with.

We will use the writings of Kierkegaard to discover whether there is such a thing and what it is. Spend your winter break in the UK and earn credit on the From Harry Potter to #Brexit: Youth Culture and Social Change in the UK program!
The program features the 4-credit class, WST 220, which will examine the connections among popular culture, politics, and youth activism in 20th and 21st century Britain. It can count as a Humanities course, or as an elective for GSWS major/minor, or Youth Studies minor.

MSP TechHire Scholars is a program funded by the City of Minneapolis which provides opportunities for underrepresented upperclassmen at Augsburg to pursue IT internships at Fairview Health Services and learn more about IT careers available in the healthcare industry.
This month, six Augsburg students will be selected to become MSP TechHire Scholars and receive a $2,310 scholarship as well as a paid fall semester internship ($20/hour) within IT at Fairview. Internships will run September-December and Scholars may choose to complete the internship for 0, 2, or 4 credits (Scholars may work a maximum of 170 hours at their internship placements.) In addition to completing their internship, Scholars will be expected to complete several unpaid professional development workshops on campus during the course of the semester.
As stipulated by the grant requirements, only students who meet the following criteria are eligible to be considered for this opportunity:
– Identify as a student of color, first generation in college (neither parent has a 4 year college degree) and/or Pell grant/MN Dream Act State Grant eligible
– Major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Business Management
– Rising Senior in good standing at Augsburg (anticipated graduation in Dec 2017 or May 2018)
– Interest in pursuing an IT career within healthcare
Unfortunately, international students are not eligible for this opportunity.

The Augsburg IT Department is sponsoring a future student panel to explore what technology future auggies expect. Come see a moderated panel where three incoming first year students will talk about what they expect from Augsburg’s technology.
Teenagers have grown up in a world where technology is everywhere and how they learn is infused with technology. Many K-12 systems have laptop programs, smartboards, and use tools like moodle. This sets an expectation and shapes how they learn — we need to understand this digital reality so we can help students succeed in the college environment. Come and hear from this panel and engage with them on questions you have about their digital reality.

Day One:
Tuesday, August 22 (from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.) features an introduction to STW’s core theory and hands-on experience with several resources in STW’s Whole People, Whole Leaders series.
During the evening of Day One, participants will be invited to serve as temporary trustees in a Seeing Things Whole Organization RoundTable where they will use STW’s approach to resource a leader around a real-time challenge facing their organization.
Day Two:
Wednesday, August 23 (from 9:00 am to 4:00 p.m.) will offer participants an entry-level training to the facilitation of STW RoundTables with attention to preparation, facilitation and follow-up phases of a roundtable session.

Spend your winter break abroad! The short-term program, From Harry Potter to Brexit: Youth Culture and Social Change, is accepting applications. This 11-day, 4-credit course (WST 220) –which primarily takes place in London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland—will enable students to experience the connection between place and politics and to examine techniques of visual storytelling. While traveling through and between these two cities, you will learn about the ways that mediums like film, television, music, and cartooning have been utilized to craft progressive political messages. We will converse with academic experts and youth activists about the effect of gender, race, and nationality on 20th and 21st century British politics, with a particular focus on the contemporary crisis brought on by Brexit.
We will analyze the Harry Potter series of books and films as a specific case study that illustrates the possibilities of using pop culture toward progressive ends, examining the ways that it engages with contemporary and historical patterns in British history, such as nativist sentiment, sexist politics, and labor rights. Our visits to both real-world sites used in the film and to the Warner Brothers studio will demonstrate the ways that filmmakers use place to ground fantastical stories and to embed politicized messages. In addition to more traditional methods like taking field notes, we will also utilize social media throughout our trip in order to put into practice one of the central claims of this course—that social media can be an effective and essential mechanism of distributing peer-reviewed information in an accessible manner.
