Description: For five decades, research has demonstrated that student connections with faculty, peers, and staff are critical to learning, identity, persistence, and success during and after college. This is doubly true for first-generation students and students of color. But institutions have not always prioritized student relationships in their mission, reward structures, and strategic plans. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with students, faculty, and staff, we will illuminate how institutional leaders at all levels can 1) foster institutional cultures that prioritize relationship-building and 2) assist students in developing practical strategies to build the constellations of relationships that will help them learn, belong, and thrive.

Navigate is student success software that guides students through the Augsburg experience. It allows staff and faculty to fully support a student by creating a coordinated care network. This one hour workshop will provide an introduction to faculty and staff use of this tool prior to the spring mentoring campaigns and midterm progress reporting. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop to this workshop.

We are now accepting applications for the 2024-2025 Interfaith Scholar cohort.

Interfaith Scholars is a yearlong student cohort that engages students as partners in ongoing interreligious dialogue and action by exploring methods and best practices for talking about religion/spirituality/worldview in a diverse democracy. Students will engage in community service learning and interfaith events as well as learn from guest speakers from religious communities, business professionals, and other leaders from across sectors. Students accepted into the Interfaith Scholars program receive a $2,000 scholarship.

The cohort meets for the full academic year as a credit based course on Thursday nights from 6:00-9:00 pm. Professor Najeeba Syeed is the primary instructor.

Students from every religious tradition and students without a connection to a religious tradition are encouraged to apply.

This week in the CTL Workshop “AI in Higher Education”, there were several questions pertaining to academic honesty in the age of AI. As we pursue various avenues to encourage academic honesty, we would like to share with you a simple idea that could help in this area.

In this week’s eLearning update we will cover:

How to enable a setting in Moodle Assignments that requires students to accept a submission statement agreeing to submit their own work, except where they have acknowledged the use of the works of others, and adhere to : Augsburg University’s Academic Honesty Policy.

Enable “Submission Statement” in Assignment Settings

In “Assignment Settings, click on the “Submission settings” drop down and select “Yes”.

If you enable the “Submission statement” in Assignment Settings, the students will see this when they submit their work.

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 50 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register using the link below by February 15.

You must have approval from your faculty mentor before registering for Zyzzogeton. If you do not have a formal abstract at this point, please provide a brief description of your research instead. You will have the opportunity to submit a final abstract/make final edits prior to the event. Abstracts will be published on the URGO website.

IMPORTANT: If you’re planning to co-present with another student(s), only one of you needs to register. Be sure to list their names and emails and indicate that they will be co-presenters where specified on the form. All presenters will be included in event correspondence.

Interfaith Scholars is a yearlong student cohort that engages students as partners in ongoing interreligious dialogue and action by exploring methods and best practices for talking about religion/spirituality/worldview in a diverse democracy. Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 50 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register using the link below by February 15.

You must have approval from your faculty mentor before registering for Zyzzogeton. If you do not have a formal abstract at this point, please provide a brief description of your research instead. You will have the opportunity to submit a final abstract/make final edits prior to the event. Abstracts will be published on the URGO website.

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register using the link below by February 15.

You must have approval from your faculty mentor before registering for Zyzzogeton. If you do not have a formal abstract at this point, please provide a brief description of your research instead. You will have the opportunity to submit a final abstract/make final edits prior to the event. Abstracts will be published on the URGO website.

Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

This last fall the River Semester managed to make it out into the Gulf of Mexico, ending our trip at Cat Island off the coast of Mississippi. On these trips down the Mississippi River, we have actually visited three “Cat Islands,” each with their own story and lessons. Students will engage in community service learning and interfaith events as well as learn from guest speakers from religious communities, business professionals, and other leaders from across sectors. Students accepted into the Interfaith Scholars program receive a $2,000 scholarship.

The cohort meets for the full academic year as a credit based course on Thursday nights from 6:00-9:00 pm. Professor Najeeba Syeed is the primary instructor.

Students from every religious tradition and students without a connection to a religious tradition are encouraged to apply.

The Writing Center is Open!

The Augsburg Writing Center offers both online and in-person tutoring. Skilled students will work with you one-on-one at whatever stage of writing you are in – the idea-development stage, the drafting stage, and the revision stage – and can show you how to choose an appropriate essay topic, how to develop a thesis statement and paragraphs, how to revise your essay, or assist with any other writing needs you may have. URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome!

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 12th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

The URGO Summer Research/Creative Activity Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 13th – July 26th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH/CREATIVE ACTIVITY ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.
