The editor of our “Opinions” section is responsible for curating, editing and writing articles centered on Augsburg student and community opinions and stories. Some examples of Opinions content topics include political comics, critiques of Augsburg administration and leadership, experiences of marginalized identities, political views and more. A bullet-point list of this position’s duties are below.

– Curate, edit and write articles centered on Augsburg student and community opinions.
– When editing, maintain writer’s intended meaning. Strive to collaborate with writers when possible.
– Commit to being open, fair and reasonable about Opinions submitted.
– Plan photos for section in coordination with Photo Editor.
– Be part of a welcoming and supporting team.

This position is paid $60 per newspaper issue (we release 10 issues every semester) and works 6 hours a week.

Frederick Douglass Scholarship to Study Social Justice Abroad Next Summer

Ready to change the world? Apply for the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship, a full scholarship to study in Ireland in late summer 2021 with a cohort of student leaders from around the country!

The Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship was founded to empower students of color with a transformative experience abroad, much like Frederick Douglass was inspired by his travels. This year’s cohort is co-sponsored by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Douglass’s four-month journey around Ireland.

You’ll be based in Dublin and visit other cities where Douglass campaigned, while meeting with government leaders and social justice activists. Special emphasis on leadership, social justice, agitation for positive change and cross-cultural understanding – so critical in 2020 of all years!

This opportunity is offered by CIEE, a study abroad organization that Augsburg partners with. All program fees are covered and airfare is COVERED – you only pay for your passport (if you need one) and a few meals.

All eligible students who submit an application also qualify for a $1,500 scholarship towards any CIEE summer program! You don’t have to win the fellowship to qualify for this funding!!

However this year, due to the pandemic, the decision has been made to gather all past Peace Scholars for an alumni event in the United States (not Oslo, Norway) to celebrate, network and build resources.

1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

The limit of students available in the food lab is three people (this is excluding the two Campus Kitchen Student Workers). Scholarship Opportunity-Spring 2021

Hi Augies, 
Augsburg’s Education Department is pleased to announce multiple funding opportunities for licensure-track students of Color and Indigenous students. We were fortunate to receive a generous grant from the Minnesota Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER). Only students who are juniors, seniors, or MAT status may apply. The grant will cover only courses that lead to licensure. Undergraduate and graduate students are required to apply each semester for a one or two credit tuition award. Student teaching grants are offered for students only one-time. 

Undergraduate students:  
The grant will cover 1 credit per semester at a cost of $1,228 for undergraduate students. 

Graduate students:
The grant will cover 2 credits per semester at a cost of $509 per credit for a total of $1018.Stipend for student teachers: The grant will cover a one-time living award up to $1,500.

Selection Process: Applications will be prioritized on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students who are interested must complete the grant application to receive spring 2021 tuition assistance. Students will receive a decision on their application on March 1st, 2021.

The Echo, Augsburg’s student-run newspaper, is looking for students interested in our position of Opinions Editor.

*Pro tip: you do not need to be an expert in writing or editing to do well as an Echo editor. The Echo provides ample training and a welcoming team of support. If you’re interested, go for it!*

The editor of our “Opinions” section is responsible for curating, editing and writing articles centered on Augsburg student and community opinions and stories. Some examples of Opinions content topics include political comics, critiques of Augsburg administration and leadership, experiences of marginalized identities, political views and more. A bullet-point list of this position’s duties are below.

– Curate, edit and write articles centered on Augsburg student and community opinions.
– When editing, maintain writer’s intended meaning. Strive to collaborate with writers when possible.
– Commit to being open, fair and reasonable about Opinions submitted.
– Plan photos for section in coordination with Photo Editor.
– Be part of a welcoming and supporting team

This position is paid $50 per newspaper issue (we release 10 issues every semester) and works 4-5 hours a week.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2021 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

After months of work and collaboration in the fall, Theater Department is proud to announce the release of At a Glance, a project devised by a four-person ensemble with direction from Atlese Robinson, Eshay Brantley, and Malick Ceesay of Ambiance Theatre Company. At a Glance provides varying perspectives on what it feels like to be a young woman of color in today’s world.

The second piece available to watch is the first cycle of Minneapolis Moment. Watch four very short plays exploring what it means to live in Minneapolis after the murder of George Floyd–Opening Moments, the Bullets, All Convenience, and Hooded Tears: An Elegy.

Admissions Staffing Update

I am excited to announce Paul Kienberger as the new Associate Director of Transfer Admission replacing Brian Turk. Paul has been working in admissions for over 13 years. He has worked with transfer students, adult students, and first year students during this time. Paul has been very successful with our international recruitment efforts, parent communications, the development of our guaranteed admission for our ACAP programs, and holds advanced standing for our Diversity and Inclusion Certificate. He graduated with his BA from Gustavus Adolphus, holds an MBA from the University of Phoenix, and an MAE from Augsburg University. Please help me in welcoming Paul to the transfer team. His duties will officially begin on February 8th. A search to replace Paul on the first year team will commence as soon as possible.

As a result of new federal COVID relief funding, we are able to review applications for students who are in need of financial assistance with spring semester tuition payments as a result of the current pandemic. Please review the following information prior to submitting an application:
*Applications will be accepted through January 31st, 2021.
*Students must be enrolled in the current spring semester to apply.
*Appeals will be reviewed based on financial need and current financial aid information for each student.
*Funding is not guaranteed and is non-renewable.
*Students whose total gift aid meets or exceeds standard tuition and fees will not qualify for additional funding.
*Any funding awarded to a student will be added to their financial aid package and applied to their Augsburg student account.

Applications will be reviewed during the first two weeks of February and students will be notified of the result through their Augsburg email.

Apply for a Boren Scholarship to Cover Language Learning Abroad

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicants in selecting a program, developing budgets and writing/editing application essays.

Scholarship amounts:

Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)

Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks

Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

Fifth House Ensemble taps the collaborative spirit of chamber music to create engaging performances and interactive educational programs, forging meaningful partnerships with unexpected venues, artists of other disciplines, educational institutions, and audiences of every type. Make A Difference for Middle Schoolers! Judge Virtual Criminal Justice Reform Debates This Spring

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to middle & high school students in the Twin Cities. We are still providing middle school debate tournaments during COVID-19 pandemic – virtually! We need volunteers to make it happen.

You can judge tournaments from home. No experience required. Sign up today!

This year, middle school debate tournaments will be split into separate dates for rookie & novice (for new debaters) and JV & varsity (experienced debaters) divisions. You are welcome to judge either division, but if you’ve never debated before, it may be helpful to try a Rookie & Novice tournament first. No experience is needed to judge! We will train you virtually.

Augsburg University’s students are invited to submit a Batalden student grant proposal to support student leadership in applied intersectional ethics on campus and/or in the local community. This student grant program defines applied ethics as work that focuses on, considers, and/or addresses public and/or private moral issues. The overarching objective of this grant is to support student work in intersectional applied ethics that promote social justice and social change. Grant funding for all student proposals is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.

Applied intersectional ethics: Intersectionality is a concept that emerged out of critical race and legal scholarship. This student grant supports work that explicitly addresses intersectionality and ethics. Student proposals should address how interdependent structures and systems of discrimination that perpetuate oppression are ethical issues.

Grant amount: Student proposals may request up to $3000 for the proposed work (including up to $1000 Augsburg student stipends — the proposal should include rationale for the stipend amount requested). Note: Proposals requesting more than $3000 must provide compelling rationale (along with a detailed budget) for the financial request. All funds must be used before May 31, 2021.

Funds for On-Campus Internship

Through generous contributions from alumni and donors during Give to the Max Day, the Strommen Center was able to create a fund to support internships for Augsburg students hosted by staff and faculty.

If you are interested in hosting an Augsburg student as an intern this spring please fill out the intern interest form. This form will be open until 5 pm on January 22nd.

•Positions should be at least 80 hours over the course of the semester
•The intern will be provided a stipend of $1,900 at the end of the internship
•Position can be remote or in-person depending on the operation of your department
•Departments who have not hosted an intern before will be prioritized
•Applicant must be a current student
•Strommen staff can support the department by helping to create the position description, develop the project or work, provide best practices in internships and supervision, and recruit a slate of candidates.

Frederick Douglass Scholarship to Study Social Justice Abroad Next Summer

Ready to change the world? Apply for the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship, a full scholarship to study in Ireland in late summer 2021 with a cohort of student leaders from around the country!

The Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship was founded to empower students of color with a transformative experience abroad, much like Frederick Douglass was inspired by his travels. This year’s cohort is co-sponsored by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Douglass’s four-month journey around Ireland.

You’ll be based in Dublin and visit other cities where Douglass campaigned, while meeting with government leaders and social justice activists. Special emphasis on leadership, social justice, agitation for positive change and cross-cultural understanding – so critical in 2020 of all years!

This opportunity is offered by CIEE, a study abroad organization that Augsburg partners with. All program fees are covered and airfare is COVERED – you only pay for your passport (if you need one) and a few meals.

All eligible students who submit an application also qualify for a $1,500 scholarship towards any CIEE summer program! You don’t have to win the fellowship to qualify for this funding!!

STEM Majors: Language Learning Scholarship for Summer Study Abroad

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicants in selecting a program, developing budgets and writing/editing application essays.

Scholarship amounts:

Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)

Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks

Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

Introducing Halal Meats in the Christensen Center Dining Commons

The Augsburg University Dining Committee and Food Services Director, Jeff Johnson, are pleased to announce a transition to the use of all halal meats (minus the pork, of course) in the Christensen Center dining Commons. The change began on January 11. Answers to the most frequently asked questions about the change are below.

What is halal meat? The word halal literally means “permissible.” Halal food refers to products that are prepared following Islamic dietary laws that determines what is permissible, lawful, and clean.

What makes food “halal?” According to Islamic guidelines, halal food is safe and it does not contain non-halal and najs (unclean) ingredients. It is processed and manufactured using clean equipment that is not contaminated.

In the future, when Nabo reopens, halal meats will be used there as well. We are unable to provide halal meats in Einstein’s given the mandated menu requirements from the company.
