Knowing this, and in anticipation of the long winter break during which the CWC office is closed, we wanted to remind the campus community of an important source of support available when our office is closed (for long breaks as well as simply during weekends and evenings). Take an online course in playwriting with real-world playwrights from around the country! This unique opportunity is available to Augsburg students through our relationship with the prestigious Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis.

There are a few spots remaining on the spring 2022 semester courses:

*Playwriting: Exploring the Writer’s Theatrical Voice, PWC300; and

*Topics in Playwriting: Human Rights and Social Justice, PWC310

There is a short application to fill out to be enrolled in the course as seats are limited. Deadline has been extended to January 3rd, or until seats are full. Courses count as Augsburg courses and can be taken as part of an Auggie’s regular semester load.

We are also looking for editors for the 2021-2022 school year!

Editor Position Description: As an editor, you will look through the submissions in your designated editing categories (you will be able to choose which categories you would like to edit for) and give your opinion on whether or not each piece should be accepted into the magazine. You will be provided with training on how to evaluate and give feedback on the submissions prior to reading the submissions.

Here’s an update on our response to the log4j vulnerability that has been in the news this past week. As soon as it was announced last weekend our systems team started to identify which systems may be impacted by it. On Monday once vendors began releasing fixes or patches we started applying them to any of our affected systems. Because log4j is a Java component we had a relatively low exposure because we have relatively few Java systems.

A new semester is just around the corner, and luckily we are expecting new international students to join us this spring—representing countries like Egypt, Sweden, China, South Korea and Norway to name a few!

Our office, the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), is looking for faculty and staff members who are interested in hosting our new international students for a dinner off-campus in your home.

Here are the details:
Date: Thursday, Jan 6, 2021
Time: Pick up at 5 p.m. with a return to campus around 7 p.m.

We ask that our hosts pick up students from campus and return them once dinner is completed. The new incoming group will consist of 7-15 international students.

COVID status: All the new international students coming from abroad are required to follow the CDC and MDH guidelines, with a required 7-day quarantine (unvaccinated exempt students), and COVID testing on day 3-5 upon arrival.

All students will show proof of a negative COVID test prior to traveling to the United States (tested 24 hours before departure), proof of recovery and/or proof of vaccination.

Any students needing quarantine, will have ended this period on January 6. And will have received their first dose of the vaccine.

A new semester is just around the corner, and luckily we are expecting new international students to join us this spring—representing countries like Egypt, Sweden, China, South Korea & Norway to name a few!

Our office, the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), is looking for faculty and staff members who are interested in hosting our new international students for a dinner off-campus in your home.

Here are the details:
Date: Thursday, Jan 6, 2021
Time: Pick up at 5 p.m. with a return to campus around 7 p.m.

We ask that our hosts pick up students from campus and return them once dinner is completed. The new incoming group will consist of 5+ international students.

COVID status: All the new international students coming from abroad are required to follow the CDC and MDH guidelines, with a required 7-day quarantine (unvaccinated students), and COVID testing on day 3-5 upon arrival.

All students will show proof of a negative COVID test prior to traveling to the United States (tested 72 hours before departure), proof of recovery and/or proof of vaccination.

Any students needing quarantine, will have ended this period on January 6. And will have been offered to receive their first dose of the vaccine.

Congratulations to Joseph Connelly, Experiential Education Specialist with CGEE, for his published article in the most recent volume of “Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal (JHE)” (Volume 10, Number 2 (2021). This volume is focused on Solidarity and Global Citizenship.

His article titled, “A Long, Loving Look at the Real: An Experiential Ignatian Approach to Immersion” can be found online for free. You can find excerpts at the CGEE blog, as well as the link to download the full article.

Abstract:
International travel is a popular and widespread practice among higher education institutions, but the pedagogy and approach to these programs varies widely. The Center for Global Education and Experience at Augsburg University facilitates international immersion programs for U.S. students, faculty, and staff focused on social justice and solidarity; this approach is particularly attractive to Jesuit institutions and has led to fruitful collaborations. This article offers an experienced immersion facilitator’s personal reflections on designing and implementing immersion programs and applies key themes of Ignatian spirituality and pedagogy to the experience of international immersion travel.

It is said that all good things must come to an end and so, after 18 years of dedicated service to Augsburg students and faculty, Ron Kurpiers has decided to retire.
