Augsburg Support for Uninsured Students – The People’s Center

Augsburg is now working with the People’s Center to provide certain clinic services to students (all academic programs) who don’t have insurance for a $5 co-pay.

The People’s Center is located at 425 20th Avenue South, one block west from Augsburg, off Riverside Avenue.

With a $5.00 co-pay, the following are available to Augsburg students who do not have insurance:

Office visits for acute or chronic medical problems
Annual physical exams – 1 per year
Sexually transmitted diseases screening and lab work done at The People’s Center (lab diagnostics done outside of The People’s Center are not covered)
X-rays performed at The People’s Center
Tetanus immunization
Lab tests performed at The People’s Center
Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux)
Casts, crutches, splints, slings and ace bandages
Allergy injections (prescription and supply must be provided by student)
Flu shots

If you have health insurance, your insurance provider may cover medical services through The People’s Center. The clinic will bill your insurance for medical services and you will be responsible for any co-pays or deductibles associated with your insurance. You should check with your insurance provider to see if services at The People’s Center will be covered.

Smiley’s Clinic remains available for students – they accept most forms of insurance.

DPS will provide an escort to The People’s Center and/or to Smiley’s Clinic.

Today, most of the world’s population lives in metropolitan areas, whether that means a traditional city, a suburb, an exurb or a slum – this is a very recent change in human history. Humans are fundamentally social beings, and urban areas provide the space where most people are born, grow up and interact with one another throughout their entire lifetimes.. We will explore the city as a social and political phenomenon and examine how the design of cities affects social interactions in perhaps surprising ways – the placement of buildings and the design of open space may make us want to be in an area or flee it.

Course Description:
Many U.S. citizens know little of Guatemala and the struggles its people face although it is a nation that continuously finds its fortunes bound to the interests and intent of the United States.

This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.
This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

Program cost $3,825

Over the past several months, Augsburg University and the Campus Ministry Office have undergone a search for a new campus pastor to join our team. It is with great joy we announce that Rev. Babette Chatman has accepted the call to serve among us! An ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Rev. Babette is no stranger to the Augsburg community. A 2006 graduate of Augsburg, Rev. Babette has been serving very part-time as a pastoral presence on Augsburg’s campus over the past 10 years as part of her call as Community Collaborative Partner with Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Minneapolis. On November 18th, Rev. Babette will be fully situated at Augsburg to help lead Campus Ministry’s student-centered mission to provide sabbath rest, to offer radical hospitality, and to shape community together for sake of neighborly justice. Rev. Babette brings remarkable gifts including her powerful Spirit-led preaching, a pastoral heart for young adults, a love for the greater Augsburg community, an unswerving commitment to racial justice and equity, her affable presence and sense of humor, and a heart for the gospel that seeks to be neighbor in the world. Please join the Campus Ministry team in welcoming Rev. Babette in the weeks ahead!

Auggie Pass still available for day students

The Auggie Pass is an all-you-can-ride pass for Augsburg day students. Supported by the green fee, Metro Transit and Augsburg, the Auggie Pass is good on any bus, any time, and any light rail, any time, as well as the NorthStar line to Anoka.

Over 1400 Augsburg day students have picked up their Auggie Pass.
Students can get their Auggie Pass at the Library Circulation Desk – please bring Augsburg ID.

The passes are good August 1, 2019 through May 30, 2020.

Model UN in New York City – study away on spring break

Take the spring semester POL 368 Model UN course, and travel to NYC for the Model UN conference at the end of March!

POL 368 is a regular course throughout the spring semester, with regular weekly classes. During the first half of the semester, students will prepare for the Model UN in NYC which takes place just after spring break, from March 29 to April 2.

Each year, the Augsburg delegation represents a different country with delegates assigned to particular UN committees or organizations, each with their own set of issues. Delegates have to understand the challenges of representing that country with its particular history, culture, and current foreign policy priorities and diplomatic objectives. At the same time, each delegate represents that country on a particular committee and will be researching issues such as climate change, human rights, trade, poverty, human trafficking, or arms control.

APPLICATIONS DUE NOVEMBER 1

Program cost $1,300
includes: round trip airfare to NYC, hotel accommodation, Model UN registration and delegate fees. There is no additional tuition fee for full-time undergrad students. Students are responsible for their own transportation in NYC, as well as all meals during the program.

Art of Resistance will immerse you in contemporary Palestinian culture and invite you to learn directly from a wide range of artists in the region. You will have the unique opportunity to experience art and performance first-hand in diverse Palestinian contexts, from a day-long excursion to cultural sites in Ramallah to a conference call with artists in Gaza. A major component of the course will be ongoing cultural exchange with students from Dar al-Kalima University in Bethlehem. Augsburg students will also learn about the complex political, historical, social, and religious context for Palestinian art and theater through guided tours, performances, gallery talks, museum visits, readings, and discussions. Throughout these experiences, students will interrogate what it means to create art under occupation, explore various definitions of the “art of resistance,” and learn tools to make creative work that defies and reimagines the status quo.

Student Share Shop Opening –Looking for donations

Hey all,

Augsburg’s Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are proud to announce a new student resource on campus: the student Share Shop. We are working towards opening this space in the sublevel of the old science building by Fall, 2019. To help us get started we are asking you—students, staff, and faculty at Augsburg—for some helpful donations.
Based off of a recent survey, here are some of the things we are looking for for the share shop:

– Household / dorm Repair (Spackle, Tool kits, poster putty)
– Recreational gear (sports equipment, out door games, hammocks, etc.)
– Office materials (calculators, sharpeners, staplers)
– First aid kits
– Twin XL sheets (new or washed)
– Weather related items (umbrellas, shovels, extra hats/scarves/mittens)
– Sewing/glasses repair kits
– Hot pots or rice cookers
– Cooking (Microwave, pots and pans, utensils, coffee makers)
– Board games, DVDs

We are pleased to announce Augsburg’s Interfaith Fellows for the 2019-20 academic year: Busshō Lahn and Chris Stedman ’08

The Augsburg Interfaith Fellows are charged with deepening and extending Augsburg’s calling to interreligious engagement, preparing students to live and serve in contexts of religious pluralism. Their work is coordinated by the newly created Interfaith at Augsburg: An Institute to Promote Inter-Religious Leadership and includes participating in classroom and campus discussions and events; working with students named as Interfaith, Christensen, and Sabo scholars; and engaging with Augsburg’s Interfaith Coordinating Committee and various religious groups on campus.

Busshō Lahn is a Senior Priest at the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center and is on the leadership team of Aslan Institute in Eagan, MN. This will be Bussho’s second year as an Interfaith Fellow. “I wish to keep offering myself as a resource on Zen, Buddhism, meditation, and mindfulness to classes & students in whatever capacity I can. I have a relatively flexible schedule, with normal class/working hours being especially available. I’d love to meet more Auggies!”

Chris Stedman is a humanist community organizer, interfaith activist, and writer living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “I’m thrilled to start my third year as an interfaith fellow at Augsburg and can’t wait to continue learning from and with this wonderful community. I especially love visiting classes and engaging in conversation with students about humanism, secular worldviews, interfaith work, and my own undergraduate experience at Augsburg. Please reach out if you have any ideas or questions about ways we might work together.”

71% of employers are hiring now for 2020 interns and employees. That is why Augsburg Works is launching this semester to help students understand recruiting timelines for 2020 jobs and internships as well as connect them to the career readiness programs they will need to be successful candidates.

Any student looking for an internship or employment in spring or summer of 2020 should be actively searching for opportunities and applying now. There are a number of opportunities this fall to help students be competitive in the job application process. Look for posters around campus and on Handshake for a full list of programs.

Two events coming up soon are:

Resume Round-Ups Sept 26 (3 pm- 7 pm): Have your resume reviewed by industry professionals during a 20 minute appointment. There are a number of appointment slots available, be sure to register through Handshake.

Augsburg’s LSAMP NSS program is designed to help STEM students succeed through peer mentoring, workshops, research opportunities, industry visits, and conference travel. The Auggie Pass is an all-you-can-ride pass for Augsburg day students. Supported by the green fee, Metro Transit and Augsburg, the Auggie Pass is good on any bus, any time, and any light rail, any time, as well as the NorthStar line to Anoka.

Students can get their Auggie Pass at the Library Circulation Desk – please bring Augsburg ID.

The passes are good August 1, 2019 through May 30, 2020.

The Center for Wellness and Counseling will host the MN Visiting Nurse Association for two flu shot clinics. The first clinic will be Monday 10/7 from 10:30 – 1:00 pm in the CWC office located on the first floor of the Anderson Residence Hall. Jeanne Boeh Named the Sundquist Endowed Professor of Business Administration

Augsburg Support for Uninsured Students – The People’s Center

Augsburg is now working with the People’s Center to provide certain clinic services to students (all academic programs) who don’t have insurance for a $5 co-pay.

The People’s Center is located at 425 20th Avenue South, one block west from Augsburg, off Riverside Avenue.

With a $5.00 co-pay, the following are available to Augsburg students who do not have insurance:

Office visits for acute or chronic medical problems
Annual physical exams – 1 per year
Sexually transmitted diseases screening and lab work done at The People’s Center (lab diagnostics done outside of The People’s Center are not covered)
X-rays performed at The People’s Center
Tetanus immunization
Lab tests performed at The People’s Center
Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux)
Casts, crutches, splints, slings and ace bandages
Allergy injections (prescription and supply must be provided by student)
Flu shots

If you have health insurance, your insurance provider may cover medical services through The People’s Center. The clinic will bill your insurance for medical services and you will be responsible for any co-pays or deductibles associated with your insurance. You should check with your insurance provider to see if services at The People’s Center will be covered.

Smiley’s Clinic remains available for students – they accept most forms of insurance.

DPS will provide an escort to The People’s Center and/or to Smiley’s Clinic.

Hey all,

Augsburg’s Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are proud to announce a new student resource on campus: the student Share Shop. We are working towards opening this space in the sublevel of the old science building by Fall, 2019. To help us get started we are asking you—students, staff, and faculty at Augsburg—for some helpful donations.
Based off of a recent survey, here are some of the things we are looking for for the share shop:

– Household / dorm Repair (Spackle, Tool kits, poster putty)
– Recreational gear (sports equipment, out door games, hammocks, etc.)
– Office materials (calculators, sharpeners, staplers)
– First aid kits
– Twin XL sheets (new or washed)
– Weather related items (umbrellas, shovels, extra hats/scarves/mittens)
– Sewing/glasses repair kits
– Hot pots or rice cookers
– Cooking (Microwave, pots and pans, utensils, coffee makers)

The Campus Cupboard (student food shelf) is moving to the Old Science building, room 8A!

It will be co-locating with the ShareShop, a new space on campus for students to share items/ resources (like cooking equipment, camping gear, etc.)

Open Hours: Fall 2019 Cupboard Hours will be posted ASAP on the Campus Cupboard website. The Cupboard will re-open at the end of September. If you need to access the Cupboard before it officially opens, feel free to email Natalie Jacobson or Nick Keener.

Free produce: Campus Kitchen distributes free, local produce to the Augsburg community on Mondays from 2-4pm in the Christensen Lobby. The first hour of produce distributions is for Augsburg students, the second hour is for anyone in the Augsburg community.

Course option: WST 220 – fulfills Humanities and Augsburg Experience

This program is limited to 15 students, accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A waitlist will be used as needed.

This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

Program cost $4,675
includes: international airfare, all meals, all lodging, all program activities, all transportation in the UK. There is no additional tuition fee for full-time undergrad students.

Hey all,

Augsburg’s Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are proud to announce a new student resource on campus: the student Share Shop. We are working towards opening this space in the sublevel of the old science building by Fall, 2019. To help us get started we are asking you—students, staff, and faculty at Augsburg—for some helpful donations.
Based off of a recent survey, here are some of the things we are looking for for the share shop:

– Household / dorm Repair (Spackle, Tool kits, poster putty)
– Recreational gear (sports equipment, out door games, hammocks, etc.)
– Office materials (calculators, sharpeners, staplers)
– First aid kits
– Twin XL sheets (new or washed)
– Weather related items (umbrellas, shovels, extra hats/scarves/mittens)
– Sewing/glasses repair kits
– Hot pots or rice cookers
– Cooking (Microwave, pots and pans, utensils, coffee makers)
– Board games, DVDs

Any donations are greatly appreciated and welcome, but please don’t feel obligated to donate. Donations can be brought to the Sabo Center located in the basement of Anderson Hall and placed in the designated bins. We appreciate your time and consideration thank you in advance.

Campus Cupboard moving to Old Science building, 8A

The Campus Cupboard (student food shelf) is moving to the Old Science building, room 8A!

It will be co-locating with the ShareShop, a new space on campus for students to share items/ resources (like cooking equipment, camping gear, etc.)

Open Hours: Fall 2019 Cupboard Hours will be posted ASAP on the Campus Cupboard website. The Cupboard will re-open at the end of September. If you need to access the Cupboard before it officially opens, feel free to email Natalie Jacobson or Nick Keener.

Travel Dates: March 13-23, 2020 (spring break)

Course Description:
Art of Resistance will immerse you in contemporary Palestinian culture and invite you to learn directly from a wide range of artists in the region. You will have the unique opportunity to experience art and performance first-hand in diverse Palestinian contexts, from a day-long excursion to cultural sites in Ramallah to a conference call with artists in Gaza. A major component of the course will be ongoing cultural exchange with students from Dar al-Kalima University in Bethlehem. Augsburg students will also learn about the complex political, historical, social, and religious context for Palestinian art and theater through guided tours, performances, gallery talks, museum visits, readings, and discussions. Throughout these experiences, students will interrogate what it means to create art under occupation, explore various definitions of the “art of resistance,” and learn tools to make creative work that defies and reimagines the status quo.

71% of employers are hiring now for 2020 interns and employees. That is why Augsburg Works is launching this semester to help students understand recruiting timelines for 2020 jobs and internships as well as connect them to the career readiness programs they will need to be successful candidates.

Any student looking for an internship or employment in spring or summer of 2020 should be actively searching for opportunities and applying now. There are a number of opportunities this fall to help students be competitive in the job application process. Look for posters around campus and on Handshake for a full list of programs.

Two events coming up soon are:

Resume Round-Ups Sept 23 (10 am – 3 pm) and 26 (3 pm- 7 pm): Have your resume reviewed by industry professionals during a 20 minute appointment. There are a number of appointment slots available, be sure to register through Handshake.

Augsburg Support for Uninsured Students – The People’s Center

Augsburg is now working with the People’s Center to provide certain clinic services to students (all academic programs) who don’t have insurance for a $5 co-pay.

The People’s Center is located at 425 20th Avenue South, one block west from Augsburg, off Riverside Avenue.

With a $5.00 co-pay, the following are available to Augsburg students who do not have insurance:

Office visits for acute or chronic medical problems
Annual physical exams – 1 per year
Sexually transmitted diseases screening and lab work done at The People’s Center (lab diagnostics done outside of The People’s Center are not covered)
X-rays performed at The People’s Center
Tetanus immunization
Lab tests performed at The People’s Center
Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux)
Casts, crutches, splints, slings and ace bandages
Allergy injections (prescription and supply must be provided by student)
Flu shots

If you have health insurance, your insurance provider may cover medical services through The People’s Center. The clinic will bill your insurance for medical services and you will be responsible for any co-pays or deductibles associated with your insurance. You should check with your insurance provider to see if services at The People’s Center will be covered.

Smiley’s Clinic remains available for students – they accept most forms of insurance.

DPS will provide an escort to The People’s Center and/or to Smiley’s Clinic.

If you have health insurance, your insurance provider may cover medical services through The People’s Center. The clinic will bill your insurance for medical services and you will be responsible for any co-pays or deductibles associated with your insurance. You should check with your insurance provider to see if services at The People’s Center will be covered.

Smiley’s Clinic remains available for students – they accept most forms of insurance.

DPS will provide an escort to The People’s Center and/or to Smiley’s Clinic.

On-Campus Career & Internship Fair – Registration Open

The Strommen Center would like to invite students to attend Augsburg’s annual Career and Internship Fair on Tuesday, October 1st from 3:00-5:00 pm in the Foss Center.

A lot of organizations do their recruiting for summer internships and entry-level positions (for spring graduates) in September and October. It might seem early but it’s a typical recruiting schedule for many organizations. We expect over 38 employers to attend so don’t miss this great opportunity!

Suicide Prevention Resources

In recognition of Suicide Prevention Week, here is a reminder of some resources on and off campus for anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts or with concerns for someone else.

Center for Wellness & Counseling (CWC) counselors are available to talk with any Augsburg student from 8-4:30 Monday through Friday- just stop by our office on first floor of Anderson or give us a call at 612-330-1707.

Anytime our office is closed, you can reach a licensed mental health counselor 24-7 by dialing 612-330-1707 and selecting option one.

STEM Peer Mentoring is a student-led mentoring program that focuses on providing support to First-years and Sophomores as they navigate their academic and professional careers in STEM.

Having a mentor in STEM Peer Mentoring can be a major benefit in establishing the success of your STEM career. If you’re a First-year or Sophomore in a STEM major, interested in having a mentor, and want to learn more about internships, scholarships, certain classes, etc. — this is for you!!

Students are matched according to their major and information they provide on the STEM Peer Mentoring Application (see link below!).

1) DROP-IN RESUME HOURS: Stop in for a 15 minute drop-in appointment (no need to schedule) at Strommen Career & Internship Services (located in Christensen across from Einstein’s) to have your resume reviewed by a Peer Adviser. Tuesday– Friday 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

2) RESUME REVIEW WITH EMPLOYERS: Get your resume critiqued by a hiring manager. Sign Up in Handshake and select your 20 minute slot for either Monday, September 23rd or Thursday, September 26th.

Student Share Shop Opening this Fall–Looking for donations

Hey all,

Augsburg’s Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are proud to announce a new student resource on campus: the student Share Shop. We are working towards opening this space in the sublevel of the old science building by Fall, 2019. To help us get started we are asking you—students, staff, and faculty at Augsburg—for some helpful donations.
Based off of a recent survey, here are some of the things we are looking for for the share shop:

– Household / dorm Repair (Spackle, Tool kits, poster putty)
– Recreational gear (sports equipment, out door games, hammocks, etc.)
– Office materials (calculators, sharpeners, staplers)
– First aid kits
– Twin XL sheets (new or washed)
– Weather related items (umbrellas, shovels, extra hats/scarves/mittens)
– Sewing/glasses repair kits
– Hot pots or rice cookers
– Cooking (Microwave, pots and pans, utensils, coffee makers)
– Board games, DVDs

Any donations are greatly appreciated and welcome, but please don’t feel obligated to donate. Donations can be brought to the Sabo Center located in the basement of Anderson Hall and placed in the designated bins. We appreciate your time and consideration thank you in advance.

Campus Cupboard is looking for some donations to help stock the cupboard shelves. We are currently looking for:

– Pasta
– Soup
– Dinner box mixes (hamburger helper, etc)
– Snack type item / crackers
– Ramen/Mac&cheese
– Protein: Bars/cans

Any donations you have are greatly appreciated and can be dropped of in the donation bin located next to Einstein’s cafe.
