MN Urban Debate League Seeks Paid Judges in May and June

submitted by froehlic@augsburg.edu

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is seeking debate judges for our Spanish Debate League and East African Debate programs. These programs serve middle and high school students at Minneapolis Public Schools, Saint Paul Public Schools, and select suburban partners and charter schools. Both programs are led by community members, who have taken the policy debate format, and tweaked it to support their students’ growth and engagement.

Judges will earn $55 per virtual tournament. No speech & debate experience is needed to be a judge, though it can be helpful – we will fully train you. More things to know:

* Judges listen to debates, provide constructive feedback, and pick a winner. In the process, they help students build confidence and academic skills like critical thinking, deep listening, and argumentation.

* Judges for our Spanish Debate League must be fluent in Spanish.
East African Debate League tournaments are held in English. (You do not have to be East African to judge, but the topic of the debate pertains directly to the community- what are the pros and cons of attending an integrated public school vs. a culturally-specific charter school?).

* Both types of judges must pass a background check and have a supportive, educational mindset.

Tournaments on these dates will be all virtual! Tournaments are generally held from 4:00-7:00 PM on weeknights. We plan to announce any in-person tournaments at a later date, which will be held in the Twin Cities area.

SPANISH DEBATE LEAGUE:

May 12
May 19

EAST AFRICAN DEBATE:

Earn $55 and Help Students Build Skills: Judge the Spanish Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is searching for some last-minute Spanish-speaking judges for our Spanish Debate League.

In the Spanish Debate League, Twin Cities middle and high school students debate a community-chosen topic entirely in Spanish. This year’s topic involves the ethics of consuming animal products.

We need judges to make it happen. No debate experience is required. We are seeking folks who are fluent in Spanish and willing to be educators, who will listen to students speak, give constructive feedback, and choose a winner of our debates. You’ll help students build their academic skills and Spanish fluency.

You’ll earn $55 for 2 rounds held virtually on weeknights.

We need judges for the following dates:

Thursday, April 21
Friday, April 29
Thursday, May 5
Thursday, May 12

Girl Scout Cookie Shortages Got You Down?

submitted by hansonjl@augsburg.edu

It’s true. There is a cookie shortage right now. The cookie booth originally scheduled for Friday, March 11th, has been moved to March 25th. Problems with production and delays in trucking have the local inventory down to nothing! Lucky for you, Eleanor has several varieties available now: Thin Mints, Carmel DeLites, Shortbread, Lemonades, Toast-Yahs, Peanut Butter Sandwhiches, Peanut Butter Patties, and even a few bags of the Gluten Free Carmel Chocolate Chip! Her supply is limited though.

Email me, stop by my office (Foss 171), or use her cookie link to place and order – select girl delivery to pick up on campus. Cash, Cookie App, or Venmo accepted.

From Eleanor: “I’m sorry, but I don’t have enough cookies for Friday. We will have more in a few days. I will be on-campus on March 25th selling them again with all the flavors. I do have some now though, so you can email my mom or order using my cookie link. Bye. – Eleanor”

Personal Care Assistance Needed

submitted by barrienb@augsburg.edu

Hi! My name is Bella and I am a second year student here at Augsburg studying graphic design. I am currently trying to find personal care assistants to help me in my day to day life here on campus. This would include getting me ready for the day, helping me get set up for class and assisting me around campus. I am currently looking for people who would want to work some hours during this Spring semester! If you are a pre-med or nursing student, this is a great opportunity to get experience with patient care. Plus, you get to be paid to have fun!

I really enjoy getting coffee, watching Netflix, drawing, and painting. I consider all my assistants as my friends and if you work for me, you are guaranteed a good time! If you are interested, please text me at: 612-345-2855 or email me at barrienb@augsburg.edu. Hope you will join!

New Restaurant – Kenyan and African Food

submitted by wolfx@augsburg.edu

A new Kenyan/African restaurant has opened on Riverside Ave. and 19th Ave. S in the old Viking Bar building! Grab a “deal meal,” “deluxe meal,” or just a snack at Kilimanjaro Grill and give our new community members a warm Auggie welcome.

Chef Jojo “grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, where I was exposed to Kenyan, Indian, and Middle Eastern food. I learned to make West African food at a restaurant I previously worked, my spouse is from Southeast Asia, and I now call Minnesota home. So, while my primary influence is Kenyan cooking, I incorporate all these other cultures that I have been privileged to be part of to create dishes that are uniquely a Chef Jojo creation and truly cross-cultural.”
